How To Make Your Own Personalized Rubber Door Mat

What you place on your front porch says quite a bit about you. It's always nice to see something with a personal touch that is both friendly and inviting. One easy way to accomplish this is by making your own personalized door mat. This is a fun, practical, and decorative way to express both your individuality and personality.

And the best part is that making custom door mats won't cost you a whole lot of money or take much skill. You only need a few things.

Obviously, you'll need to pick out a rubber door mat. You can easily find this at your local hardware or discount store. Just be aware that all rubber door mats have texture to them. The texture is meant to absorb dirt and keep if from entering your home. So, select a simple door mat with a consistent texture.

To decorate your mat, you'll also need some stencils. More than likely, you'll be able to buy these at the same store where you buy the mat. You may want your front door mat to feature your family's last name surrounded by a border of leaves or flowers. You can find stencils in a wide range of designs. But for the sake of simplicity, you may want to choose one without a great many details.

You'll also need some stencil paints in your favorite colors while you're still in the stencil department. Stencil paints don't run because they are thicker than ordinary paint. Also on your list of things to get are a few large sponges and a paintbrush for the smaller in the stencils. The last thing you'll need is a polyurethane spray or other similar protective spray.

If you have them at home, you may find that some rags, paper towels, or plates will also be useful. Once you have all the supplies ready to go, wash and thoroughly dry the mat. This is done to get rid of any dirt or residue from tags.

Then place some form of protective material underneath the rubber door mat, such as a drop cloth. Make sure the door mat is placed on a hard surface, like a table. The drop cloth will prevent the the table from being stenciled as well.

Then pour some of one of your paints onto a paper plate. Position the stencil where you want it and secure it with masking tape. Make sure it's taped down securely around the edges of the stencil. The goal is to not let the paint get outside the edges of the design.

Then take a sponge and dunk it into your first color. Lightly dab the paint into areas of the design, trying your best to get it inside the pockets of the texture of the rubber door mat. Before you move on to another color, you'll need to let this first area dry.

If you plan on doing multiple areas of the doormat in the same color, you'll need to lift the stencil carefully and reposition it at the new location. Allow the first color to fully dry before moving on to the next color. Should some of the paint bleed outside of the design area, carefully wipe it off with the corner of a paper towel or rag.

Finish applying all of the colors you have selected in this manner. Allow each color to dry before adding the next color.

Let your rubber door mat dry for at least 8 hours before moving on the the final step. When the mat is thoroughly dry, take it to an area that is well-ventilated. A back porch is an ideal location. At this point, spray the entire door mat with a coat of polyurethane. Let the rubber door mat dry for a few hours and spray it again.

Your design will then be protected against the outside elements and the inevitable wear and tear.
