Bike sharing in China - 2018

Bike sharing is a great concept. Hire a bike from point A and ride it to your destination point B - once at point B the bike is secured for the next rider who rides it to their chosen destination, and so on.

Certainly a great concept if it is managed well and used in accordance with bike sharing rules.

I'm sure that most Chinese municipal bodies could see the value in a well maintained and managed bike sharing service, and so encouraged businesses to become involved with the idea.

.....and sure, at times, things may get a little untidy, but all worth it for the benefit to the community, right!

Unfortunately many businesses in China jumped onto the bike sharing idea and produced many bicycles for use in a country where millions of people use bikes everyday. However management was poor and things started to get a little out of hand.

As there were so many bikes to chose from bike sharing systems became very cheap and so users abandoned bicycles on road verges after use with little or no respect to others. As the problem grew local authorities impounded the abandoned bicycles and have stored them until they can figure out how to resolve the problem.

1990's Colnago Super - Part 2

Part 1 covered the restoration and transformation of my 1990's steel Colnago Super frame which was posted in November 2017.

In short, I originally bought the early 1990's frame from a bike shop in Belgium last year and selected the frame because it was a steel Colnago frame that had a rear hub spacing of 130mm (which allowed for a modern group set to be fitted to the bike). I was a after a retro Italian frame that was compatible with a modern group set so this frame fitted the bill perfectly.

As seen from the 'Part 1' post the frame re-finish was superb and I totally recommend Cameron from Cyclecolor for any valued bicycle restoration project that you may have.

Anyway, the frame was refinished beautifully so I set about collecting a worthy group set for the project, but which gruppo should it be?

Being an Italian frame the group set definitely had to be Campagnolo, and the set needed to look right on the bike.....so was it a new silver Potenza gruppo, a new old stock (NOS) silver Athena 11 speed gruppo, or an older NOS Campy gruppo from the 90's?

After much deliberation and internet research I decided to go for a 2014 Campagnolo Chorus gruppo.

I chose this set because it was Chorus (minimal carbon and just beautiful!) and it was the last Chorus series to have a traditional 5 arm crankset. Campagnolo have now replaced the traditional 5 arm crankset with a modern looking 4 arm crank which really wouldn't suit the bike (as below - you can see what I mean!).

So I compiled a list of 2014 Campy Chorus components and purchased NOS parts from differing internet bike stores to make up the set. It's very surprising how different the prices are for differing components from various internet stores. It really pays to shop around, and depending on how much you spend the stores often include free shipping which sweetens the deal considerably.

So here are some images of the build. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I have had the pleasure of building the bike....

Since finishing the bike I've ridden it for a couple of hundred kilometres and I am very impressed with the bike. The ride is very balanced, accelerates instantly, and the group set is smooth and accurate. Probably my most satisfying vintage build so far.....

Colnago Arabesque - 30th Anniversary edition

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the famous Colnago brand in 1984, Ernest Colnago produced a limited number of steel framed bicycles called the 'Arabesque' model. These masterpieces are highly sought after by bicycle collectors and have often been considered the most desirable of all collectable bicycles.

Most of the Arabesque frames were originally sold separately except for a few that were adorned with a special edition Campagnolo Super Record group set that was pantographed with Colnago 30th anniversary markings.

Here is an advertising image from the day which promotes the sale of a limited number of models being sold with Colnago special edition 30th anniversary group sets made by Campagnolo.

Here are some images of an original 1984 Arabesque bike taken recently for an online auction:

The Arabesque lug work on these frames was considered to be exceptional at the time of production in 1984. The lug detail is quite beautiful and this attention to detail has never been replicated by any other bicycle manufacturer to date.

Beyond the beautiful lug work Ernest Colnago wanted to add something special to his design to further enhance the desirability and beauty of the frame. He decided to add a solid gold 3 leaf clover inlay at the top of each seat stay as pictured below.

As you can see on this particular build the group set fitted to this Arabesque frame is the Campagnolo 50th Anniversary Super Record set that was produced in 1983. This famous and also highly collectable group set was made to commemorate Campagnolo's 50th anniversary. Incidentally this was also the year that the founder of Campagnolo, Tullio Campagnolo, passed away at the age of 81.

Colnago commenced re-making Arabesque frames in 2015 after factory workers discovered some Arabesque lugs that were left over from the original production. Although the new issue is almost identical to the original issue collectors still regard the 1984 editions to be superior in quality to the newer models.

Wilier Triestina Ramato

Another well known and highly respected Italian cycling manufacturer is Wilier.

Wiler was founded in 1906 by Pietro Dal Molin. After World War II Wiler formed a professional cycling team led by Giordano Cottur of Trieste, Italy. In 1945 the name of the brand was changed to Wilier Triestina, and the distinctive copper coloured finish became a trademark of the brand.

At this time, of course, all frames were made from steel and the copper coloured finish was quite unique.

Here is a fine example of a Wilier Trieste steel framed bicycle from the early 1980's using Columbus tubing.

Due to the resurgence of retro steel frames Wilier have reintroduced the copper coloured 'Ramato' finish on modern steel, and the modern version is absolutely amazing.

There is certainly something special about fitting a modern Campy groupset to a modern steel framed bike....and a little bit of chrome rounds off the deal nicely!

Wilier are calling the most recent edition of this model the "Superleggera". Producing a copper finish on the frame is quite an expensive exercise, so the pricing of this model is not accessible to all cyclists.

Thankfully Wilier have produced the same frame in alternative finishes that allows the bike to be more affordable to us all. The frame also comes in black, red, and white.....same frame, with the same impressive detailing.

1990's Colnago Super - Part 1

I was keen to build up a vintage steel Colnago bike with a modern Campagnolo group set so I hunted about for an early 1990's Colnago. After hours and hours of trawling the regular bicycle internet haunts I found an early 1990's Colnago Super for sale at a bike shop in Belgium.

I was totally in luck! The price was good, and the frame looked excellent except for the fairly average paintwork. There were a few scrapes, nicks, and scratches on the frame but this was expected of a used steel frame of about 25 years old.

The blue frame had all the good bits: chromed forks, chromed lugs, forward facing dropouts with adjusters, a threaded headset, and Colnago pantographing on the areas you'd expect of a Colnago steel frame from the era.

The best part was that the rear wheel spacing was 130mm which was just perfect for a modern group set. So after a bit of negotiating with my new Belgian friend I bought the frame and had it shipped to Perth, Western Australia.

After a couple of weeks the frame arrived in a big box on my front doorstep...very exciting! After unwrapping the frame I looked closely at it and was very pleased as it looked better than I had expected.

The frame needed re-finishing so after a bit of research I chose a colour scheme, acquired some new Colnago Super decals, and got in contact with my friend Cameron at Cyclecolor. He has a small workshop near Fremantle and his re-finishing of bicycle frames is amazing.

Cameron treats all restoration jobs as if they were his own, he is very professional, and meticulous in the quality of his work.

The photos of the finished frame here are quite average in quality and don't do the frame justice. In the flesh the quality of the job is beautiful in every respect. Thanks Cameron for an excellent job with my Colnago frame.

Cameron has his own website at Cyclecolor which is well worth a look if you are in need of a bike frame re-finish, vintage or modern.

So my next decision for the built relates to group set choice. Campagnolo it will be, but I'm not sure whether to use a silver Potenza group, or an older Chorus group.

The new Potenza group set is very nice however it only comes with the new 4 arm crankset design which is a bit too modern for this frame. Perhaps I could even chase down a NOS Athena group set with a more traditional 5 arm crankset from a few of years back!

Well, it looks as though I'll be spending a fair bit of my time trawling the regular bike internet sites again!!

The Raleigh Golden Arrow

In 1934 the Raleigh bicycle company started mass producing their 'Model 41' bicycle. It was a sturdy but stylish bicycle that was designed to appeal to the sportier type of gentleman. When the 'Model 41' was released to the market it was labelled "The Super Sports".

This was a truly beautiful bicycle of its time. It consisted of an entirely brazed up steel frame with a parallel top tube and cut away lugs. It had tapered fork blades and rolled on 26 x 1 1/4 chromed rims. It had a chromed head clip stem fastener and racey drop handlebars that were covered in a plastic covering known as celluloid. It had front and rear caliper brakes, ivory coloured steel mudguards, a Brooks saddle, a leather saddlebag, and rat trap pedals.

Luckily for the lady folk, the bicycle also came in a step through version that was named the 'Model 42' bicycle.

This was a true 1930's racer and was available with two gearing options. The first option was a single speed, and for a little extra it came with a Sturmey Archer close ratio three speed hub.

This was a popular and sought after bicycle that soon became the envy of many cyclists. After a good year of sales in 1934 the bicycle continued to be produced at the Raleigh factories in Nottingham.

During production in 1935 the 'Model 41' changed its name to "The Golden Arrow". The 1935 model was almost identical to the previous years design although it came with a sportier type of handlebar that was more like a Lauterwasser style handlebar. These handlebars were also covered in celluloid.

Sales continued to soar as The Golden Arrow became a popular choice of bicycle.

The 1936 model was very similar to previous models although the celluloid covering on the handlebars was removed and replaced with shiny chrome. What a stunning machine!

The year of 1937 was Raleigh's Golden Jubilee that saw them tweek many models for this memorable occasion. The Golden Arrow saw a few minor changes, and this year included an option of a chrome plated front fork. The 1937 model also came in a 'golden' colour to mark the special event!

Production continued during 1938 and 1939 which saw The Golden Arrow bicycle readily available in many bicycle stores throughout the United Kingdom.

Late in 1939 the United Kingdom was drawn into World War II and production halted as industry focused their resources on the war effort. 1940 saw the last of all sales of The Golden Arrow which was not produced again.

Masi Gran Criterium Classico 2018

Masi Bicycles (USA) have just released their 2018 range of bikes at the 2017 Interbike Show that was held in Las Vegas. Amongst the various new Masi models is a definite standout for 2018 being the Gran Criterium Classico.

With the renewed interest of vintage cycling Masi have reissued an authentic vintage replica of its ever popular Gran Criterium model.

To show you how authentic this replica is I have posted an image of a 1972 Masi Gran Criterium directly below this text....and below that is an image on the new 2018 replica model.

Quite an astounding likeness that should resonate very well with vintage cycling fans.

Although the 1972 model was fitted with only Campagnolo and Cinelli components, the 2018 model carries a mixture of Campagnolo, Ene Ciclo (by Dia Compe) and Cinelli components......a well selected mix of what todays market offers in terms of 'new' vintage cycling componentry.

The frame of the 2018 model is a faithful reproduction of its original edition. Here are some images of the new model...

The champagne colour of the new model is a very traditional Masi colour which has been beautifully replicated.

For me the outstanding features of the frame are the long forward facing rear dropouts and the Masi "M" logo that has been cut into the underside of the bottom bracket.

The decals are fantastic replicas and I also love the front fork with a traditional chromed crown that is true to the original GC models.

Previous Masi Gran Criteriums have only carried A-head stems so it's great to see that this more traditional model has a threaded 1 inch headset for quilled stems.

The new model has only just been released in the US so it'll available for purchase from the Masi Bikes website fairly soon. I notice that it is sold as a complete bike on the Masi website for US$2720.00, but I'm hoping that they will eventually sell the GC Classico as a frameset as well.

The 2018 Masi Gran Criterium Classico is currently available at Adrenaline Bikes in both forms: The complete bike can be purchased for US$2499.00 and the frameset for US$1099.00.

1949 Bianchi Zaffiro

Here's an old Italian classic by Bianchi called the 'Zaffiro'. The word 'Zaffiro' can be translated to 'sapphire' in English which is the name given to a valuable blue gemstone that represents wisdom and royalty. The sapphire has often been considered as the gem of all gemstones.

A very popular town bicycle in Italy and throughout Europe during the 1940's and 1950's, the Bianchi Zaffiro model came only in black or Bianchi Celeste blue.

This 1949 model came with Bianchi's own branded hubs, crankset, handlebars and headset. The 28 x 1 5/8 chrome rims were made by Maccari (Torino) and the freewheel and chain were manufactured by Regina.

You can see by the photos below that the tyres are by Pirelli and the original leather saddle is by Aquila.....although it does appear that the leather saddle has been re-upholstered (new stitching).

The Westwood profiled chrome rims are slowed down with rod brakes that are fitted to the frame. Of course rod brakes force a rider to plan their journey wisely.

There's no stopping in an emergency here!!! Rod brakes aren't very effective and you'll need at least 10-15 metres of clear level roadway in front of you to brake safely on a dry day.

Riding this bike in the hills on a wet day would be lethal! Don't even bother throwing gravel into the equation as was usually the case in the 1940's.

Not many of these have made it to Australia so you'll need a lot of luck to acquire one from a garage sale.

Given its manufacture date of 1949 this all original example is in exceptionally good condition and would be a pleasure to ride along a coastal boulevard in the spring time.

Perth Retro Bicycle Show 2017 - The Event

Saturday 15 July 2017 will be remembered for two very memorable cycling events.

One of those important memorable events of course was the Perth Retro Bicycle Show that was held at the North Perth Town Hall. What a great day for retro cycling enthusiasts!

About 80 pre-2000 dated road bicycles, including a selection of vintage cycling memorabilia and clothing was on display for the general public to see. An enthusiastic crowd spilled through the doors of the historical circa 1930's suburban town hall and many were very impressed with the high quality of beautiful retro bicycles on display.

All the usual suspects were present - Colnago, Wilier, Raleigh, Eddy Merckx, and De Rosa, just to name a few.

Here are some images that capture the day....

There were four competition categories but the 'Best Bicycle on Display' as voted by the general public award was the most prestigious. The winner of the award was a magnificent 1990's Wilier Cromovelato that is owned by Greg, one of the show organisers.

The below images of the Wilier does not convey the beauty of the bike which is amazing to see in the flesh. A fantastic example well worth the accolade.

Congratulations to organisers John, Greg, and Cameron (Cyclecolor) for arranging the day that was greatly appreciated by all bike owners and those who attended the event.

The second memorable cycling event of the day was the amazing efforts of Michael Matthews who won Stage 14 of the Tour De France bicycle race. What a great stage won by a true Australian cycling champion - well done Bling - the green jersey beckons!!

Zeus 2000

We all know that bicycles manufactured in Italy, France, England and Belgium are special, however it's easy to overlook the fact that the Spanish also have a serious love affair with bikes.

The Spaniards are as passionate about cycling as the rest of us and their cycling history clearly shows this to be the case.

The 'Zeus' brand (pronounced Zoose i.e. Loose with a 'Z') was founded by Luis ARREGUI in Spain around 1926. This makes the brand about 10 years older than Campagnolo.

Zeus was a complete bicycle manufacturer and was the only bicycle manufacturer in Europe to make its own bicycle frames and bicycle components, thus manufacturing complete bicycles.

Zeus made many attractive and exotic components, and in the eyes of some were often accused of copying Campagnolo - perhaps the Italians were a little jealous! Zeus ceased manufacturing bicycles in the early 1980's due to the highly competitive bicycle market.

The brand had many outstanding features, the most obvious feature was that because they made their own components many of the components were pantographed with the Zeus branding.

Here is a well maintained example of a rare Zeus 2000 series bicycle from the early 1980's...it was one of their final magnificent creations!!

You'll notice The Zeus pantographing on the headset, brake calipers, derailleurs, fork crown, cranks, and even the crank bolts....if they made it, they had it pantographed!!

And for your ongoing pleasure there's also a bit of 'drillium' on the chainrings, rear derailleur and brake levers.....

...and this fine example supports a brown suede Zeus racing saddle and is presented to you in the famous colour of Molteni orange!

Perth Retro Bicycle Show 2017 - The Promo

Following on from the success of the Perth Retro Bicycle Show in April 2015, Perth Velocollective have announced a new and exciting show for 2017.

This years show will be held on Saturday 15 July 2017 at the North Perth Town Hall located at 26 View Street, North Perth. Exhibitors will be displaying their finest examples of pre-2000 steel framed bicycles.

The show will create a great atmosphere for current vintage cycling enthusiasts and introduce others to the world of vintage steel bicycles. Local supportive industries will be in attendance to provide advice for your next vintage build. A good dose of vintage cycling memorabilia and clothing will also be on display.

All of us had steel framed racing bicycles as kids, and for some of us the interest never left!

The 2015 show was fantastic. There was a great variety of road and track bicycles, some of European heritage and others of Australian Heritage. From Swanseas to Colnagos to Holdsworths.....all bases were well represented.

Gold Plated 1980's Colnago Master

Here is something special.

'Vintage Luxury Bicycles' have lovingly restored this Colnago Master frame from the early 1980's. This example has been 24 karat gold plated and freshly painted in a striking blue and would be a lovely centre piece of any retro bicycle collection.

The photos below show the extent of the professional craftsmanship with pantographed Colnago Master logos, a Campagnolo group set, and Cinelli accessories.

The group set is from the Campagnolo 'C Record' first generation that was produced between 1983 and 1984. Some of the Campagnolo components have also been gold plated which accentuates other gold plating on the frame.

It's easy to appreciate the detailed work of this build, and in particular the gold plated Colnago cable end on the front derailleur cable on image 6.

The pantographing on the stem and Delta brake covers is exceptional....indeed a thing of beauty.

So when do you actually ride a bike like this?

The Ernesto Colnago pantographed chainring is a real feature. A truly classic Italian steel bicycle that is beautifully maintained considering its age of 41 years.

Quill stem with 31.8mm clamp

The 31.8mm quill stem is an evolution in traditional quill stem design – simple yet clever. Cyclists have always wanted a classic looking quilled stem that could accommodate 31.8mm handlebars without having to use those ugly adapters. This is a very traditional looking stem that will compliment any vintage bike that needs a 1″ threaded headset.

It’s incredibly light at 270g and will finally allow you to choose from the wide world of handlebar possibilities that have a clamp diameter of 31.8mm. The stem is made from 7075 aluminium and has a removable faceplate that is held in place with two stainless steel screws.

The removable faceplate is a bonus as it enables you to remove the handlebars without disassembling your entire handlebar setup. It also allows you to fit the bars with ease as sometimes a traditional quilled stem is difficult to slide around the handlebar curves enroute to the clamping area.

The overall height of the stem is 150mm which allows for a height of 100mm above the minimum insertion line. This is a really good extension height considering that older cyclists prefer a more upright seating position and may require a higher set handlebar - this stem easily allows for extra height.

The stem is available in either a high silver polish or a deep black anodized finish. It is available in two extension lengths depending on the brand you by – extension lengths are 80 or 90mm only.

The stem is similar in styling to the Shimano 600 AX stem of old but as mentioned before it now provides you with a huge range of modern drop handlebar options with a 31.8 clamp area, especially modern road handlebars with short drops which are very comfortable and practical.

1989 Colnago Master Pui

Here is something very easy on the eye - a 1989 Colnago Master Pui.

The Master Pui is a variant of the Master series of Colnago steel framed bicycles. The Pui versions were introduced from 1988 onwards and are highly prized collectable bikes.

Ernest Colnago started making steel framed bikes in 1952 and was a bike mechanic for Faliero Masi in 1955. The Colnago brand continued on with great success and in 1963 was a big part of the Molteni Racing Team that developed the cycling legend Eddy Merckx.

The Colnago Master series of steel bicycle frames are still manufactured today, although they are a very rare sight on a Sunday morning ride.

Enjoy this one.....chromed lugs, chromed fork, built with Columbus nivachrome 'Gilco' shaped steel tubing, and dripping with a Campagnolo C Record groupset including Delta brakes. The pantographing on the frame also makes it a standout model.

De Rosa Nuovo Classico

Although it's not a real vintage bike, this De Rosa Nuovo Classico is of vintage heritage and well worth a look.

Fitted with a Campagnolo Record 11 speed drive train and a Campagnolo Eurus wheel set this example is sweet on the eye and very desirable for any cyclist with an interest in steel. The frame has chromed lugs on the head tube and a chromed chain stay - typically classic.

You can still have a vintage styled steel bike with the absolute convenience and reliability of a modern drive train.

I love steel.....but for me the drawcard to this frame is the De Rosa pantograph work on the fork crown (image #6). De Rosa have faithfully maintained this beautiful element in their steel frames - something that other manufacturers have simply forgotten.

Christmas has come and gone again as Santa rides off into the distance. Another year has almost passed us by with only a few more days of 2016 remaining.

Once the silly season has passed it will be nice to get out on the bike again. My plan is to ride more during 2017!

To minimise risk on the roads next year I'll probably spend more time on cycle paths and so I conducted a bit of online research to discover if there were any new cycle paths in my local area. During this research I came across a few examples of cycle paths that were not quite designed to be cycle friendly.

Here are a few images of some 'not so bike friendly' cycle paths......

The path below appears relatively safe but just doesn't make sense....

...and of course whilst on the road the usual cycle hazards will be ever present!!!

Brooks Swift - Vans Vault Edition

Brooks England have always been creative with their leather bicycle saddles and for some years now have been releasing limited edition carved saddles.

I have a Brooks Team Pro saddle with the Alpe Huez design (pictured below) that was released in limited numbers in 2010.

Its amazingly striking design is based on the topography of the famous Tour de France hillclimb. It's still in it's original box and is such a lovely piece of leather that I haven't fitted it to a bike as yet.

Brooks have only this week released a new saddle design in conjunction with Vans, the footwear company. The Brooks Swift Vans Vault Edition features laser etched artwork and intricate detailing from designer Taka Hayashi - the Vans shoe design guru.

As you can see it's a beautiful looking saddle that is only available in honey coloured leather. The saddles are exclusively numbered from 1 to 1866. The number 1866 is of great significance to the Brooks company as this was the year that the company was founded by John Boultbee Brooks - 2016 being their 150th anniversary.

The saddles are only available from the Brooks England website at 200 Euro a piece. Maybe a post Christmas present for ones self!

Sir Hubert Opperman's Malvern Star

During a recent trip to Melbourne, Victoria, I visited the National Sports Museum located at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

On display was an amazing representation of Australian sporting history that captures football, cricket, and Olympic history. It also includes other amazing Australian sporting achievements.

A trip to Melbourne is definitely not complete without a tour of the MCG and the National Sports Museum. It's a 'must do' whilst in Melbourne.

Of great interest to me was the display of Sir Hubert Opperman's Malvern Star 5 Star bicycle that he rode in 1940 to create a 24 hour world cycling record and other distance records. His original world record bike is on display and it's been beautifully maintained.

Google his name to learn of his significance to Australian cycling history.

There was definitely none of this going on during Hubert's world record attempt!!

The display represents an amazing piece of Australia cycling history. The bike is encased in a perspex cabinet so good photographs are very difficult to take.....but you get the idea.

This display is complimented by another display that represents a great Australian sporting achievement of equal greatness...

... the bicycle ridden by Cadel Evans during his 2011 Tour de France victory. No need to Google Cadel's name, you know he's a legend!!

Mottainai Cycles, Melbourne.

Tucked away at the end of a small Collingwood laneway awaits a unique bicycle store named Mottainai Cycles.

'Mottainai' (pronounced Mote-tie-nigh) is an old Buddhist word meaning "What a waste!" or "Don't waste."

An English equivalent is the saying "Waste not, want not." A more elaborate meaning conveys a sense of value and worthiness and may be translated as "do not destroy (or lay waste to) that which is worthy".

Mottainai Cycles excels in restoring vintage bicycles to their former glory and encourages the recycling philosophy that its name suggests. Waste not what can be restored! Focusing on the restoration of vintage and steel lugged bikes the shop is a treasure trove of valuable vintage and second hand bicycle parts from all over the world.

I recently visited the store and was very impressed with the lay back nature of a productive bicycle store that adds immense value to the local cycling community. Melbourne has a very busy cycling culture and Mottainai Cycles certainly adds to the cultures diversity.

The mural on the workshop wall adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the store.

On entry I was greeted by a Gazelle road bike on display, probably circa 1980's. A fine example of a Dutch vintage road bike that is worthy of any vintage collection.

I was blown away with the vast array of bicycle frames, forks, and vintage parts on hand. I could have spent hours looking at the large number of parts in the store but I was short of time.

There was a good selection of high-end restored European classic road bikes - and (surprisingly) they were well priced.

After each Mottainai restoration the proud owner is asked to accompany their valued bicycle in a photo shoot. A number of these photos are posted regularly on the Mottainai blog page, click on the link here to see more of their wonderful restorations.

If you're in Melbourne and restoring a vintage bike a visit to the shop is a must. Forget Ebay.....you'll find all you need at a reasonable price at Mottainai Cycles.

The store is located down the laneway at 23 Johnson Street, Collingwood. The shop is closed on Tuesdays but open every other day of the week. Check the blog page or the web for trading times.

De Rosa 35th Anniversary Special

In 1953 Ugo De Rosa established De Rosa Cycles in Milan, Italy. In 1988 to help celebrate 35 years of bicycle manufacturing De Rosa released a Signature Edition 35th Anniversary frame - the Model 35 Anniversario.

This edition became highly collectable as only about 350 frames were produced worldwide with only 55 frames making it to the US. The bike was made from Columbus SLX tubing and came in a 'pearl white' colour with a chrome rear chain stay and had a unique 'red rose' decal on the head tube.

The bike originally came as a complete bike with Campagnolo C-Record cranks that had Ugo's signature engraved on them.

This particular example is fitted with a Campagnolo 50th Anniversary groupset. This groupset was made in 1983 which was also the year that the founder of Campagnolo, Tullio Campagnolo, passed away.

It appears as though the owner of this bike swapped out the original C-Record set with the 50th anniversary Campagnolo set - a fitting tribute for such a fine frame.

This is a magnificent example of the impact that De Rosa has had on the cycling industry for many years. The 35 Anniversario model pictured here is still stunning to look at even though it is now some 28 years old.

De Rosa still make beautiful steel frames today. Their chrome lugged 'Nuovo Classico' model is made each year and is built to accomodate new 11 speed groupsets. With the rise in popularity of steel framed bicycles De Rosa have also introduced the 'Age' series of fillet brazed steel frames that are also very attractive and versatile.

Masi bicycles 90th anniversary

Originally a bicycle brand from Italy, Masi bicycles are now owned by the Haro brand in the US.

The brand has an interesting history that commenced in the 1950's in Italy. Faliero Masi, who was a professional bicycle racer and bicycle mechanic, turned his hand to building bicycles that were outstanding in their day. The Masi brand was later taken to the US by Faliero, whilst his son Alberto continued to build bicycles in Italy.

The year 2016 marks the 90th anniversary of the Masi brand so they held a celebratory screening of the movie 'Breaking Away' which is a cycling flick made in 1979.

The movie is significant to the Masi brand as it follows the life of a young cyclist named Dave Stoller (played by Dennis Christopher) who became obsessed with cycling after winning a Masi bicycle. The bicycle he won and raced was the Gran Criterium model which has long been the flagship model of the brand.

At the same event Masi released a book to commemorate the event called 'Ninety Years of Masi' by Dominic Phipps. The book is for sale on the Masi Bikes website - a must have for any Masi enthusiast!

On display during the event were some classic Masi bicycles pictured below that were well appreciated by die hard Masi fans.

An edition of the steel framed Masi Gran Criterium is still released each and every year. Masi have just announced that the 2017 Gran Criterium will come in a choice of two colours, silvery blue or classic red.

Adrenaline Bikes are based in Orange County, California, and are famous for specialising in new steel framed bicycles from a large number of Italian bicycle manufactures such as Bianchi, Cinelli, De Rosa, and Colnago. Their website is well worth a look.

The 2017 Gran Criterium

The Gran Criterium can be purchased as a complete bicycle or an individual frame. The complete bicycles are fitted with the new Campagnolo 11 speed Potenza groupset.

The new Campagnolo Potenza gruppo replaces the old Athena series. It's unusual four arm crank has not been particularly well received by those cyclists wanting a more traditional looking crank for a new steel frame. Oh well, thats progress!

1979 Ciocc San Cristobal

Cast your eyes over this magnificent example of a Ciocc San Cristobal built in 1979. The paintwork features gold plating to the head tube, front fork, seat stays and chain stays. The remainder of the lugged steel frame is painted metallic white.

The bike was displayed in a bike shop for almost 35 years and has only been lightly ridden. It's in an amazing condition apart from a small paint chip on the down tube near the right gear shifter. The Ciocc decals are in superb condition.

The bike is built with a Campagnolo Super Record groupset and has drilled gear shifters, a Cinelli 1R 'Ostini' pantographed stem, and a Campagnolo Record seat post.

The Ciocc brand was founded by Giovanni Pelizzoli in the late 1960's. At one stage Giovanni built De Rosa frames. Today he occasionally restores Ciocc bicycles and has signed this fine example of a Ciocc San Cristobal on the top tube as seen below.

Although the Ciocc brand was on sold in 1980, Giovanni Pelizzoli (pictured above) still produces modern steel frames today under the Pelizzoli brand. See his new frames at http://www.ciclipelizzoli.it/

Pashley Speed 3 Special Edition

The Pashley Bicycle company in the UK was founded in 1926 and to celebrate the companies 90th year it has released two special edition bicycles. One is a steel road bicycle (that is well worth looking at), and the other is a special edition version of the Pashley 3 speed Guv'nor they've called the Speed 3 SE (Special Edition).

The Speed 3 SE, as the name suggests, is geared by the ever reliable Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub. I have a 3 speed on my Guv'nor and it works beautifully - without fault every time.

It's a pity the same cannot be said about the Guv'nor Speed 5, a British Racing Green version of the Guv'nor that supports a not so reliable Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub.... so to celebrate the occasion Pashley have chosen wisely by using a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub for this edition.

I really like the way Pashley reintroduce old styling features on their special models. The Speed 3 SE has a frame mounted number plate (akin to the Speed 5) and proudly displays a stainless steel 1920's head badge that is unique to the 90th celebration models.

As you can see this edition also includes a special lug set that is unique to the model. The styling is reminiscent of the 1920's and the lugs are a typical example of decorative lugs used during this period of bicycle manufacturing.

The fork crown is quite different for this model. Again it's a feature that was more common on bicycles from the 1920's. It certainly adds to the unique styling of the bike.

Like the Speed 5 the Speed 3 rolls on black Schwalbe rubber as opposed to the white Schwalbe rubber on the traditional Guv'nor models. The finishing kit is from Brooks of course, so quality is never an issue.

The Speed 3 was first unveiled at the Eroica Britannia cycling event held at the Peak District National Park (UK) in June 2016. As you would expect the unveiling created a lot of interest for the Pashley brand.

You can buy the Speed 3 special edition in black, black, or black, so once you have made your colour choice the only thing left to do is to go to your local Pashley dealer and place an order.

1950's French Randonneur Bicycles

French randonneur (or touring) bicycles of the 1940's and 50's have some particularly interesting history. These custom made aluminium bicycles were a testament to boutique bicycle manufacturers across the French countryside.

Compared to other bicycles built around the world at the time, most custom made randonneur bicycles were well ahead of the rest in terms of design and style. Custom built randonneur bicycles were quite expensive and due to their cost were often playthings for the rich and famous. Many examples still exist and are often sold at auction for reasonably high prices.

Here are some examples that sold recently at auction with dorotheum.com

Here is an AVIAC bicycle that was made in Courbevoie, near Paris in the 1950's. This was quite an advanced bicycle for it's time as it was made from lightweight aluminium and had cable routing that ran through the frame. This particular cycle has Simplex gearing. The hammered aluminium fenders are beautiful.

Here is another from the same era made by MERCIER, this being the Mecadural Pelissier model. This was also very lightweight for its time. During this period aluminium could not be welded and so the lugs held the aluminium tubing together with expander bolts. Another breath taking example of the fine art of French bicycle manufacturing from the 1950's.

Most randonneur bicycles had built in lighting systems to enable the traveller to ride at night. The 650B tyres were quite forgiving which enabled the randonneur rider to travel on rough roads throughout the French countryside.
