Tataki Gyu ($15.90)

Tsunami is unbeatable with presentation, flavour and sole Japanese authenticity. Definitely one of the best Japanese fine dining in Perth. I have heard a lot of recommendations about this restaurant hence I thought it will be nice to celebrate my graduation dinner at Tsunami. We started with Beef Tataki, pieces of seared raw beef with seaweed and daikon-infused ponzu (citrus juice). I could not resist, it was delicious and refreshing. Not for the faint hearted, the raw beef was beautiful it blends religiously with the citrus zest and the seaweed on top.

Japanese Green Tea

Patagonian Toothfish $29.90

The restaurant offers an array of traditional Japanese dishes such as Sushi's, Sashimi, Tempura, Sukiyaki (Hot Pot) and Ishiyaki (Meat cooked in hot stones), name it they have it. I ordered the famous Patagonian Fish for main and my oh my, I was taken off to another world in a millisecond. It is the silkiest, smoothest piece of fish I have ever tried.. ever. It was so good I almost forgot my name!

Another highlight of this meal was the Wagyu Beef served in a Volcanic Rock. The Rock was heated to 400'C and allows you to cook the beef according to your preference.

Tsunami restaurant had a unique feel about it, it was cozy yet classy and the fairy lights in the back garden dining area was tantalising. Quite romantic I admit. Very relaxing surrounds, Good service, Commendable dishes!

Happy Star Noodle House

Sambal Kang Kong

We stumbled along Happy Noodle House after an hour of zumba (latin dance classes) so i have been good I can eat whatever I want. Or can I? This is first time I have tried Happy Noodle and it is surprisingly good. Funny though, we went to a Noodle house and did not order a noodle dish.

Sizzling Japanese Tofu

I ordered a few dishes and they turned out to be a healthy choice, ( must be my post-exercise mind working). Sambal Kang Kong ( Chinese veggies with chili) , Sizzling Japanese tofu and Peking Spare Ribs.

Peking Spare Ribs

The Sambal Kang Kong was hot the way i like it. The sizzling Japanese Tofu was served in a sizzling plate and the aromas was so beautiful you can almost taste the dish before it was served. The peking spare ribs were not too sour, but could be better.

Hong Kong BBQ

Roast Pork & Rice

The newly renovated Hong Kong BBQ in Northbridge is the place to for some pretty decent barbeque. I ordered roast pork and rice and man, was it good. It satisfied my craving for "fat", cholesterolically speaking it is bad for you but it tasted soo good. I would not break my diet if not for this roast pork.

They also have roast duck visible right infront of the window, and sweet roasted pork. There's so much to choose from and in you can also try their dimsum from 10 am until late lunch. Yum....

Yang Zhou Fried Rice

We also ordered fried rice, and this was religiously topped off with a mixture of roast pork, prawns, eggs and spring onion. Every bite was a play of flavour and it was very satisfying.

The restaurant also prides itself with the fresh crabs visible from their aquarium that you can order fresh if you feel like having a snow crab splurge. However not quite sure, if i felt like eating them as they stared right in my eyes.

Sliced Fish Meehoon Soup ($12.50)

Known for its world-famous Ipoh Ho Fun (Rice Noodle), Ipoh Garden Restaurant sure will not disappoint. Have dined at this eatery for years and it still has not changed. My all time favourites are Sliced Fish Meehoon Soup, Ipoh Ho Fun soup and I-swear-I-can-eat-forever, the Inchikabin ( Fried chicken with Tamarind dipping sauce).

The sliced fish Meehoon was just perfect, served boiling hot in a sour broth. The tomatoes balanced the sourness and the soup had generous amount of fish and veggies. Holy smokes! its a temptation to my tastebuds, I had to order and try more dishes.

Hainanese Chicken Rice ($9.90)

It is the first time I tried the Chicken rice at Ipoh and oh my God. It is wonderful. They serve big pieces of perfectly steamed chicken, soya sauce and drizzle of fried onions, I could not stop. The Hokkien Fried Mee was a classic sensation. Ipoh is a popular restaurant that serves knock out dishes that is uniquely Malaysian. Average service, but good value for money!

Sumptuous Sandwich selection: Ham, Brie and baby spinach

Smoked Salmon, Goats cheese, Basil and cherry tomato

Feeling slightly pekish as the waiter in his suit serves us the three-tiered indulgence, I could not wait any longer. Undecisive on where to start, I had a quick scan of the High Tea Menu. I quickly grabbed the smoked salmon on the bottom tier for the sandwich starter. My plan was to eat my way up and yes! I'm going for gold. After the first bite I thought Duxton hotel had lived up to its name. It sure is one of the best places for High Tea's in Perth. For $28 per person you get a selection of sweet and savoury delectables to share and a bottomless pot of tea. Indeed, I agree it is a "Luxury High Tea fit for a Queen".

Strawberry Tartlet with Custard

Tier two was the sweets, and this is where I lingered the longest. Not because I ate too slow, but the deserts were too good not to savour slowly. My favourites were the strawberry tartlet and the chocolate custard. It is definitely one of the best tartlets I have ever tried. The pastry was light and airy, and the custard was as smooth as silk. I was in heaven.

Savoury Scones and Banana-flavoured muffins

After minutes of chats, laughter and High Tea appreciation I was ready for the last stop. The scones were still warm and soft. It was definitely a good ending to a two hour food marathon. Love the High Tea in Duxton, the service is impeccable and the surrounds are very classy. Ladies this is a must-try if you would like to have afternoon of High Tea delight!

Combination Chow Mein ($9.50)

Do not underestimate the food available at food courts because Sun Sai Kai is one of the few good ones I have tried. I ordered a Combination Chow Mein, the mix stir fried vegetables and crispy noodles was a delight to the tongue. The presentation was appetizing and the taste was just immaculate. The beef was very tender and cooked the traditional way , not salty with just the right amount of sauce. I did not order the ready made food on the counter as I cannot guarantee its freshness. So although we had to wait for the food, it came out hot and steaming! Service was fast, and with the plethora of other options around the food court I was happy to have made this choice!

Sumo Salad

I have been eating out a lot lately and I wanted to cut out the guilt so I tried a healthier alternative.. a Sumo Salad! Not very sumo as I have expected as the serving is quite small. I ordered a Moroccan Lamb salad and I was only half full after the meal. On the contrary, the salad is quite rich with the Moroccan sauce and an intricate mix of non traditional ingredients in a salad such as chickpeas and pumpkin. I can savor the spices used such as coriander, turmeric, cinnamon and a hint of chili. It was very tasty and a unique reinvention of salads. The only thing was the lamb that was meant to be served hot was a bit cold and the salads were not crisply fresh. I have tried Sumo before but it was better on my first attempt. I believe that the salad was a bit too dear for its ingredients. They have a lot more options like Chicken Ceasar, Spicy Prawns and Thai Beef which may be worth trying.

Very refreshing watermelon juice.

What can I say? Vans Cafe is a product of the chef's culinary expertise for Mediterranean-Asian food. It was nice to sit at Vans for breakfast or afternoon tea along the high cultured corners of Cottesloe. I tried a spanish chorizo and goats cheese and freshly squeezed watermelon. The serving size is very small but taste is divine. This is where quality over quantity rings true. There are lots more specialties on Vans menu such as Duck spring rolls, Zucchini Fritter with Mint, Roasted Pork Belly and the house specialty, Paella with Rabbit.

I like the clocks with different shapes!

Vans is exquisitely designed and very relaxing, it has a warmth about it and quite a good place to chill out. They offer free internet so it will be handy for business people, students and pro-bloggers like me. Been here before for breakfast and the food is just magnificent, their award winning cuisines are but an understatement. However, the dishes are premiumly priced but worth it. Good service, great ambience and superb food.

Tea is an essential element of Chinese food. We ordered Chrysanthemum Puerh tea, a mix of dried flowers and post-fermented leaf tea that is important to wash away the oils.

South Ocean Chinese Restaurant is an old establishment but still a local favourite. We went there during Chinese New Year hence the restuarant was so full I could hardly breathe. South Ocean offers a variety of Chinese food and friends have recommended me to try this restaurant as the Singaporean Crab Noodles is good. However i did not feel too daring at this time I ordered a Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice as well as Minced Beef Fried Noodle instead. The Salted fish fried rice was as good as i remembered- one of the best fried rice I have had. The minced beef fried noodle was not the best though, the noodles needed a bit of love. It was quite hard and a bit oily. Overall this restaurant is perfect for a group gathering so you can sample a variety of Chinese delicacies. Will come back to try the Singapore Crab for sure.

Braised Duck Noodle Soup

Hidden behind a string of fast food restaurants in South street is the holy grail. Welcome Inn is a must try if you are craving for authentic Malaysian/Chinese/Hong Kong food. We ordered the Braised Duck Noodle soup (my mouth is watering while I type) and the Seafood Laksa. The serving size was just right and the dished were rich with ingredients. The braised duck was grilled to perfection and even the soup broth was divine. The Laksa was just as good, authentic coconut base with malaysian spices. Welcome Inn is very popular to locals, they provide good personalised service. Good value for money too and you will leave with satisfaction.

New Mexican Paella ($29.50)

Ola! Santa Fe offers authentic Mexican food at the heart of Subiaco. The restaurant has a good vibe although very congested, it made me sweat a river while eating the fiery buffalo wings . Very mexico! The pork ribs was a hit, the serving size was generous topped with tangy BBQ sauce. We also ordered the signature Spanish dish the Mexican Paella. The heady aromas bring back memories of my childhood. However, the chillies were tamed down, I was expecting more of a chili hot dish as it should be.

Buffalo Wings ($16.90), Santa Fe Famous Pork Ribs ($29.50)

Overall the experience was surreal, the infectious Spanish music helped me digest the food faster than expected. I will sure come back and bring my troops to try other dishes next time as they offer the traditional food like nachos, tacos, pepper poppers, enchiladas to name a few. It will be great to go there around 6-7 pm for their 2 for 1 cocktails. There is also a tequila lounge next door thats very handy if you want to keep drinking tequila shots until dawn. One thing that I remember at Santa Fe was me trying the hottest chili sauce on earth, the "Death Sauce" -the name says it all. Get more than a toothpick size dose and you may need to get an ambulance. Consequently,Santa fee offers flavoursome Mexican food and its always packed so make sure you book!

Satay Chicken (5 Sticks, $7,70)

We dined at Mak's place because the Satay Chicken was a mass favourite. Apparently being commented as one of the best Satays in Perth according to a writer from Sunday Times, I had to test it. The surrounds reminded me of a cafeteria in Singapore and the walls are deliciously decorated with Mak's dishes on canvas. We ordered Nasi ayam (Rice cooked in Chicken Broth and marinated fried chicken), Nasi Briyani (Curry chicken with fragrant rice cooked in ghee and spices) and ofcourse the Satay chicken ( chicken in peanut sauce). Did not realise all of our dishes were chicken-based but it does not matter,all three were uniquely appetizing!

The Satay Chicken was sumptuously beautiful , the satay sauce is made of real peanuts, not too oily and with just right thickness. I particularly loved the Nasi Briyani , the fusion of the fragrant rice and the curry was like wildfire in my mouth. However the Nasi Ayam failed to impress my partner,as it tasted like a plain home-made fried chicken. But overall, one can really savor the authentic Singaporean-Malay flavours at Mak's Place. The food is cheaper than average, less than $10 a dish and serving size was just right.

One of the reasons that attracted me to this Japanese eatery in Melville is
the Name. It’s so uniquely contradicting as this “Sundays Everyday” eatery is
open everyday except Sunday. Yes it’s hilarious but not quite when you rock
up on a Sunday looking forward for a nice Japanese food and its closed ( which
happened to me when I first went there ). What’s so enticing about eating at
this place is the value for money. Their main Japanese food ranges from $6.00
to less than $10 and they offer authentic Japanese food such as Teriyaki’s,
Sushi’s and Curries.

I went there last Saturday and we ordered Teriyaki Tofu, Chicken Katsu and
Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken). Oh and to tell you the unbelievable thing,
their serving size is humongous. One dish is big enough to fit for two people,
I should have shared but I was too greedy to eat one whole dish I did not end
up finishing it. The atmosphere is pleasingly attractive to younger crowds and
some business people looking for a good Japanese feed. The location is just
next to the Melville car dealerships, very casual and the staff are welcoming
and friendly. Sundays Everyday definitely makes you feel like it’s a Sunday
everyday of the week (well.. except Sunday of course) !

I am not a fussy eater so that's one thing I'm proud of. I am willing to try any type of food, well maybe not to the extent that dude from "Man vs Wild" will do, but I think im pretty game. You can take me to a 5 Star Restaurant or eat street food the next and still have a blast!

Just to tell you a bit about my preferred palate and to not take everything I say to heart, here are a few of my favourite foods.

1. Chili-- any kind of chili or anything on the chili family is something that drives me wild.
2. Sour--mangoes,lemons,oranges,apples, vinegar or anything with citrusy taste
3. Raw fish-- I can eat a whole fresh salmon in one seating
4. Honey-- Raw pure honey or anything with it (tea, yoghurt or cereal) is a blessing
5. Olives-- I have an obessesion with Olives i just love it
6. Cheese- Feta/Aged cheese/Camembert
7. Turkish Bread-- this is the best bread in the world I think
8. Any red fruit-- i love red and i love any red fruit, strawberries,cherries,watermelon,pomengranate
9. Chicken-- fried, steamed, grilled, bbq'd anything as long as its not dry.
10. Green veggies--steamed, blanched or stir fried is so yum...

My favourite restaurants

1. Jacksons-- best fine dining restaurant in Perth, it is a nine course meal and they provide small servings of each dish but the quality of every bite is just so beautiful.
2. Poppo-- best Japanese in Perth, it is in the Perth CBD and very small eatery but their sushi's are out of this world.
3. Little Ceasars--Best pizza place, its a drive up in Mundaring but worth it, now they opened a new branch in Mt lawley
4. Azure-- one of the best laidback Mediterranean food I have had , their 5 tasting plate of desert is classic

Hello! My name is Vercess. I live in Perth and I love food. Well, before
you even start reading my blog, let's talk a bit about me...

I graduated with a Bachelor of Communications Degree at Notre Dame
University and have recently earned my Masters of Commerce and Marketing
at University of Western Australia. I am engaged to full time work however
my ultimate love are food, photography and journalism. I am a born and
bred in the Philippines with Spanish and Chinese heritage now living
in Australia.

My name does not have a meaning except that it was invented by my dad.
People find it hard to pronounce so that just call me V. My surname
translates to (Kain na) meaning (Lets Eat!) in my language. Well, that
sure explains my love affair with food. I am writing Perthylicious in
an effort to help locals and tourists alike to know what Perth has to
offer. Perth being known as "dullsville" in comparison to the Eastern
States is but a misconception. After living in Perth for 7 years I have
discovered the ever changing multicultural city that embraces not only
its natural beauty but the quality of its produce and food.

I would like to take you with me to a journey of gastronomic delights
