Debt still seem to chase us until we take respite in a debt management plan but undoubtedly the debt relief process is not an enjoyable one to go through. Anyways we got to get out of this financial rut that was partially a result of federal financial failure and our individual lack of money management skill and more importantly, we ought to teach our children about how to avoid any kind of financial crisis. Firstly we have to make them realize that savings is important and can actually be fun if they want to enjoy the greater pleasures affordable by money. Even a pre-school child should be able to understand the concept of saving for a goal. If you make a game out of saving the concept will be more readily accepted by a child. A fun piggy-bank, a sticker chart for every saving goal met, or a parent matching the funds set aside are all great tricks to help the child warm up to the idea of saving instead of spending. Next your child needs to know that needs and wants are not the same thing. It’s difficult for a child to distinguish between what they want and what they need. If we’re being honest, it’s difficult for a lot of adults as well. Start from an early age talking through the difference with your children. When they ask for something it’s a good opportunity to rehearse the difference between what may be fun to have but isn’t necessary and what they really need.

Kids tend to think if you use a credit card or a debit card that the money is limitless. Explain to your children in detail how the credit cycle works. Make sure they understand the idea of borrowing money now and then having to pay back more than they borrowed later because of interest. You can teach these lessons in simplified ways to a young child and gradually add more detail as the child gets older and is better equipped to understand. Remember that children are not natural hard workers (at least not the ones I know) and will often go to great lengths to avoid work but still expect the rewards. It’s essential to instill the basic financial principle of a good work ethic in your kids to equip them with the skills they will need to earn sufficient income throughout their life. Chores and other household tasks are a natural way to instill that value in your children. The concept of earning related to working is also a great opportunity to reinforce the idea of education and its effect on their financial future. A 10 year old is more than capable of understanding the difference between your earning potential with a high-school diploma as opposed to a college degree. Research has shown that most adults do not use a budget. One of the primary reasons they give for not using one is that they either don’t know how or think it’s too complicated. But actually kids will make surprising choices when they are equipped with the information to participate in the budget process.

Keeping these points is mind one should precede with the good deed of teaching their children about money which can either make or mar their life.

Figures today revealed an unexpected fall in Japan’s unemployment rate.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said the unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in February – a two-year low and down from January’s rate of 4.9%.

Analysts had expected the rate to remain unchanged.

The number of jobless people currently stands at 3 million – down 240,000 from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, separate figures showed the country’s job availability improved in February for the 10th consecutive month.

The jobs-to-applicants ratio grew to 0.62 in February – meaning 62 jobs were available for every 100 jobseekers.

The figures suggest the jobs market is improving but the country is battling to restore calm after an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami on 11 March.

The twin disasters have caused billions of pounds worth of damage and will impact on the country’s economic growth.

The World Bank estimates approximately 0.5% will be reduced from growth this year, as a result, and reconstruction could take five years.

Discuss this in the Finance Markets forums

Rainworks Omnimedia, a producer of traveling exhibitions for science and natural history museums, announced Monday that it would launch an 8,000 square foot interactive, multimedia exhibit to highlight the need for better financial literacy.

“For most of us who are striving towards financial freedom but don’t have a formal education in finance and accounting, personal finance is an enigma,” Gail Vida Hamburg, CEO and founder of Rainworks told AdvisorOne by email. “While I was doing research for a museum exhibition on health a few years ago, I found a global study on money worries and disease. I felt as I delved deeper into this near universal worry and fear about money that affected individual health, marriages, and whole families and communities, that financial literacy could help people manage some of these worries.”

Hamburg noted that for many people, managing personal finances is a burden.

“Your eyes glaze over as you try to make sense of SEP, index funds, ETFs and penny stocks,” she joked. “I felt that what was lacking in financial literacy education was entertainment. I wanted to design a museum exhibition that would make personal finance and money matters engaging and entertaining. I also wanted it to be inspirational and so I decided to frame it as a journey towards financial self-actualization. That is really the genesis of Economia: Money Matters.”

Gail Hamburg, Founder/CEO, Rainworks Omnimedia The exhibit targets families and schoolchildren, Hamburg (left), wrote, but is designed to include adults of all ages, “the kind of visitors who go to science, industry and natural history museums.” It will feature lessons on the “foundations of personal finance and financial literacy,” including budgeting, spending, good and bad debt, credit card use, mortgages, predatory loans, credit unions, college loans and retirement, according to Hamburg.

The exhibit features several distinct displays to address those myriad issues. A gallery of interactive exhibits called “College Road” shows students and parents how to pay for college “without going broke,” Hamburg told AdvisorOne. “The Third Act” is a gallery that outlines how to prepare to a worry-free retirement. Other exhibits will show how compounding helps grow savings, and a “mega installation” covers how the stock market works.

“With the help of award winning and visionary designers, we are creating an exhibition that will be educational and entertaining and that we hope will change the way people think about money,” Hamburg wrote.

She notes that there are already exhibits on currency and money that attempt to educate people on broader economic subjects. “With Economia: Money Matters we want to focus on personal finance, which I define as everything one needs to do to achieve financial self-actualization,” she wrote. “We are working with thought leaders in the field of financial literacy and personal finance and interpreting their knowledge into the exhibition with the help of our design team.”

The exhibit is expected to cost $4 million. Displays will be designed by San Francisco-based Snibbe Interactive.

“For Economia, we are thrilled to infuse the sometimes scary topic of finance with highly engaging social interactivity that promotes healthy life-long habits for leveraging the power of compounding, spending, college planning, retirement, and even explain how our stock market works,” Snibbe founder and CEO Scott Snibbe said in a press release.

“We are particularly excited about working with [Snibbe],” Hamburg wrote, “who will create high-octane and engaging social interactives to illustrate abstract and difficult personal finance principles.”

The exhibit will debut in California, and begin touring in fall 2011.

Understanding how to implement Forex trading money management to grow your trading account is essential to the success of all traders. However, many beginning traders are largely unaware of some or most of the basic concepts of effective Forex money management, and this is a major reason why so many traders fail to make money over the long-term in the markets.

This article will cover five topics that every trader should be keenly aware of in order to grow their trading account as efficiently as possible. For more information on each of the five topics discussed below, check out the links contained within each topic. You should use this article as a starting point to understand Forex trading money management, and refer back to as needed to solidify your comprehension of each topic discussed.

•	How much should I risk on a trade?

I get a lot of emails from traders asking me how much they should risk per trade, or what percentage of their trading account they should risk per trade. Unfortunately, there is really no “concrete” answer to this question because there are a lot of variables that are different from one trader to the next. A good place to start when trying to determine how much to risk per trade is to honestly answering this question: how much money do you have as disposable income that you can realistically afford to lose?

I find that many beginning traders fund their trading accounts with money they really shouldn’t be risking in the markets, and if they don’t initially make this mistake, they make later down the road after blowing out their first account. So, first off, you should never risk any money in the markets that is not truly disposable, and by truly disposable I mean “fun money”, money you don’t need for any other purpose besides entertainment. I am not implying trading is entertainment, I am just trying to convey the point that you should only trade with money you truly do not need. Doing this will start you on an “even” emotional playing field, because you will have no emotional attachment to your trading money.

Next, when determining how much you should risk on a trade, always think in terms of dollars risked, not in pips. The notion that a trader should think in terms of pips instead of dollars is simply not conducive to effective Forex trading money management. Pips are basically irrelevant because one trader could risk the same amount of pips as another trader but they could have drastically different dollar amounts at risk, this is a result of position sizing and will be discussed below.

In my own personal approach I take a more discretionary approach to how much I will risk on any given trade, this is contrary to what the popular Forex web presence might say. I typically risk a set amount of dollars per trade, rather than a set risk percentage, this approach works for me because I have mastered my trading edge, which is price action, and so I know exactly what I am looking for in the markets. Also, because I trade with purely disposable income, I have no problem risking a set dollar amount on a price action trading setup that I feel 100% confident in. For more on this approach please click on the link in the previous paragraph.

•	Risk reward

Risk reward should be thought of as the “workhorse” of money management, the proper implementation of risk reward is how professional traders make money. Indeed, it is so powerful that you can even enter the market essentially randomly and not lose money over the long run, and perhaps even turn a small profit, through the proper execution of risk reward. For more on this idea see this article: A Case Study of Random Entry and Risk Reward in Forex Trading.

Unfortunately many traders take the wrong approach to risk reward by worrying first about the potential reward and last about the potential risk. You need to first calculate the risk involved on any potential trade setup AFTER you determine the most logical place to put your stop loss. Once you have done this, you then can determine what the potential reward is based on multiples of your dollar amount risked. So, if you risked $100 on a trade, you ideally want to aim for a reward of at least $200 or more; the R:R would be 1:2. The idea is that if you can make at least 2 times your risk on all your winning trades, you will, over a series of trades, offset your losers to the point of turning a decent profit. Obtaining a R:R of 1:2 or better even gives you the potential to lose on the majority of your trades and still make money. For more on the topic of risk reward see this article: Risk Reward: the Holy Grail of Forex Trading.

•	Position sizing

Many traders do not understand position sizing, but it is a very simple concept that you must understand if you want to effectively manage your money. Position sizing allows you to risk the same amount of money no matter what price action trading strategy you trade or how large or small your stop loss distance is. Some traders erroneously believe that by having a wider stop loss on a trade they are risking more money or that by having a smaller stop loss on a trade they are risking less money.

The truth of the matter is that you can adjust your position size up or down to meet the necessary stop loss distance. So, you first should determine the most logical place to put your stop on a trade setup, you never want to determine your position size first, this should always come AFTER you determine the best and safest place for your stop. After figuring out where to place your stop loss, you THEN calculate the number of lots you can trade to maintain your pre-determined risk amount. This is the correct way to maintain your risk on any trade; it is a basic but essential component to an effective Forex money management plan. For more on position sizing check out this article: Risk Reward & Position Sizing in Forex Trading.

•	How effective money management helps you manage your emotions

I often discuss the importance of managing your emotions while trading the Forex market. This is a very important factor of successful trading, but it is something that depends heavily on correct Forex trading money management. Put simply, if you don’t logically manage your money and risk on every single trade, it will be nearly impossible for you to manage your emotions effectively. There is a reinforcing loop between money management and emotion management, and it can go either way. For example, the better you manage your risk and money in the Forex market, the easier it becomes to manage your emotions, simply because if you are effectively managing your money you are unlikely to become emotional.

Conversely, if you do not take risk and money management seriously you are opening a can of “emotional” worms that will be very hard to contain. The temptations of over-trading and over-leveraging your trading account are very difficult to contain if you aren’t trading with truly disposable income or aren’t comfortable with the amount you are risking per trade. So, you see, you need to build your Forex trading money management plan on a solid foundation, and this starts with the concepts discussed previously of disposable income, risk / reward, and position sizing.

•	Master your Forex trading strategy

Finally, in order to truly exploit all of the above topics, you need to truly master your Forex trading strategy. As I discussed earlier under the “how much should I risk on a trade?” topic, the main reason that I am comfortable using a somewhat discretionary approach to risk amount is because I am 100% confident in my knowledge and awareness of my edge in the market; price action.

Experienced traders like myself know that trading less often than most amateurs is conducive to growing their trading account. Put simply, there is no reason to trade if there is no reason to trade. All of the above money management principals are best taken advantage of when you are confident in your trading strategy and have no doubts in your mind about what the market should look like before you risk your money in it. Essentially, domination of your chosen Forex trading strategy will tie all of the pieces of money management together and make them work in your favor. If you want to know more about how I trade the Forex market with simple price action trading strategies, check out my price action Forex trading course.

If you had bought the shares of Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) about 10-odd years ago (1.4.2000, when the price was Rs. 68) you would have made an incredible return of 2196% at the CMP of Rs. 1,647, not including regular dividends. In other words, your investment of Rs. 1 lakh 10 years ago would be worth Rs. 21.96 lakhs today!

The most important aspect that is not known yet is the price at which the IPO of L&T Finance Holdings Ltd will be priced. This will determine whether the IPO is a success or not. The chart shows that L&T Finance Holdings Ltd‘s RONW is much lower as compared to that of its peers. So, hopefully L&T Finance Holdings Ltd‘s IPO will also be priced correspondingly and not such as to take advantage of the hype that L&T‘s name will create.

February Sees Larger-Than-Expected Increase In Personal Spending – Image via Wikipedia

Personal income edged up in February but increases were below predicted amounts, according to Monday’s data from the Commerce Department. Also unexpected: a larger-than-anticipated climb in personal spending amounts.

Commerce Department statistics indicate a February rise of 0.3% from January’s revised 1.2%, corrected to reflect a larger increase than previously calculated. Economic experts had predicted personal income’s growth would be slightly speedier, more like 0.4%.

More grudging numbers for growth failed to inhibit spending, however. After January’s 0.3% improvement, February improved on the improvement with a 0.7% jump. Personal spending projections ran around 0.6%.

February’s healthier spending figures run parallel with improvements seen in October of last year, the most significant positive data since mid-year, 2009.

Total figures for personal savings ended up at $676.7 billion as of February, as opposed to January totals of $710.5 billion. The figure, calculated by subtracting personal necessities from one’s disposable income, is an indicator that Americans may be moving back to their old habits (more spending, less saving).

Personal savings amounts — when measured as a disposable income percentage — also represented a decline in February, down from January’s 6.1% to the current 5.8%.

“Bottom line, the key to the economy is still mostly spending,” commented equity strategist Peter Boockvar of Miller Tabak, “and what drives this are job gains and income growth above the rate of inflation.”

Whew! For the first time in three months, I’m not feeling stressed about work. I’m caught up on blog posts, my articles for other sites are written, and I don’t have any other pressing tasks. I love being able to take long vacations to other continents, but the preparation and clean-up for these trips is a bear!

And I can’t rest too long. My next column for Entrepreneur magazine is due soon. Plus, I need to prep for a budget workshop I’m giving at a local library. And the World Domination Summit is just around the corner! That’s going to take a lot of time, too. Plus — best of all — I’ve started the early work on my next site. (About which I’m very excited.)

Still, all the hard work was actually pretty productive. Though it took blood, sweat, and tears, Get Rich Slowly had some great articles last month. Here are a few of the best:

Yes, looking back, March was one of the best months at GRS in a long time. Two thumbs up from me!

The blog isn’t the only part of this site. If you have burning questions about personal finance, one of the best places to get answers is the Get Rich Slowly discussion forum. The forum is a great place to chat with your fellow readers. Have questions about emergency funds? Ask! Want to chat about cheap vacations? This is the place to do it. The forums have over 4750 registered users and nearly 54,000 posts.
