Bee activity in San Diego started heating up right on schedule in 2011. March brought some early bee removals in Valley Center, ordinarily a high traffic bee area.

In April, we performed one of the most extensive bee hive removals to date. Setting: Bonsal. Situation: large, two story, modern Spanish style home built with sofit-style eaves. This type of eave system, by nature, is absolutely perfect for hosting a bee hive. When all was said and done, we had removed 6 separate and distinct, very large bee hives from various locations around the eaves. In total, we estimated that we removed over 350 lbs. of honey/honeycomb from their eaves.

Chula Vista, especially Eastlake and Bonita, saw a lot of bee removal work throughout the season. We probably removed 10 different hives out of chimneys in Eastlake alone.

Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside had light to moderate bee removal activity, though one of our largest of the year was removed from a roof in the La Costa area.  Rancho Santa Fe, Escondido, and Valley Center had record breaking numbers of bee removals this year.

Poway bee activity was moderate this year, though we performed our most exciting bee removal of the year at the Poway Community Church in October. The grounds are home to the oldest still-in-use chapel in San Diego County and they were preparing the chapel to be re-roofed when they discovered a bee hive in the upper-most part of the steeple. The bee hive removal required the use of a 60 ft. boom lift to safely access the hive and perform all necessary repair work. It was a pleasure to work with the good people of the Poway Community Church.

1. 1) With ladder in one hand and caulking gun in the other, make your way around the house inspecting the eaves and stucco for holes or other access points where bees could get into your roof or walls.
2. 2) Be sure to keep your yard free of couches, luggage, and other debris that provides safe harborage for the bees to construct their hive.
3. 3) If you drain your Jacuzzi for the summer, make sure the seal around the lid is tight.
4. 4) Not-in-use chimneys should be topped with 1/8 in. mesh. Some of the biggest hives we have seen occur in chimneys.
5. 5) Be sure the rim around your exterior can lighting is tight and fits properly. If gaps occur between the can light rim and the ceiling, it become a very tempting target for bees to discover.
