Sometimes the simple things in life that we say or do can have the biggest impact, when it comes to promoting and sharing love, protection and kindness to animals, like St Francis pet medals.

Everyday I feel blessed when I'm engraving and gift wrapping each tag we sell because I know it is going to a pet that is very much loved and taken care of.

The words in the Prayer of St Francis are beautiful and personally I find strength and peace in saying this Prayer every morning. It reminds me of how important it is that I come from a place of love and hold every animals welfare in my heart.

St Francis Prayer:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

This daily practice led me to a place where I became vegan, starting in 2008. A couple of bumps along the way took me away from staying on this path. Sometimes, I was lazy about making the most compassionate choice at every meal and with every purchase I made and there was some social pressure and stigma that I encountered along the way too.

However, only when I made a solid commitment to the animals first and foremost did I find it so much easier to embrace this lifestyle fully. Something I didn't expect as a result, was how much I felt my heart opened up, like a dam that burst and a lightness came in because I was no longer making decisions that supported cruelty to animals.

Along the way I've learned so much about food and nutrition too and want to share this with others who are interested. As someone who was not always vegan and lives with a non vegan (who is very supportive of my choices) I hold no judgement of another. If you're interested, stay posted as I will be sharing articles, recipes, tips and more on my Pet Blessings blog page.

The people I've encountered in the Vegan community are loving and kind and put the animals welfare and treatment first as they make decisions in life. I love that and it's encouraged me to be speak up and be more of a voice for the animals, I believe this is my purpose in life.

As it happens, it also turns out that embracing this simpler lifestyle is much kinder to the Planet and my personal health. There is a gift in everything.

Our dogs love attention and we love giving it to them. With this in mind we listed below five simple ways to spend time and connect with your dog that they will adore and you will really enjoy too!

Treat Time:
Use a spoon to catapult treats or kibble across the yard and watch your dog have great fun chasing after them (and of course eating them too).

Sock Massage:
Put an old pair of socks on your hands and massage your dog the way you normally do. Doing this creates a different sensation for them because much more of their coat is covered with each stroke. They will love that you look kinda silly too!

Toy Fun:
Hide your dog's favorite toy in a paper grocery bag. Shake the bag to get their attention and then watch them have fun digging it out and reclaiming it.

Scratching Under Their Collar:
This sweet spot is often forgotten during petting sessions. So try it out, chances are your dog will totally dig it.

Nose Massage:
Using your index finger, slowly stroke the bridge of their nose in the direction their hair grows. Watch them become sleepy as you relax too. Sounds like a perfect way to end your day together, starting tonight...zzzz.

It turns out that 100% of all the dogs we surveyed agreed these fun exercises are easy ways to bond and a great way to spend time focusing solely on them. Simply perfect!

with love & pet blessings,
Bren, Noodle & Pebble xo

It seems many people are experiencing record temperatures all around the country, with that in mind it's very important to remember the easy and simple ways to keep your beloved pet safe and cool.

We live in Temecula, CA where temperatures are often in the high 90's and 100's and it's a very dry heat; my pooches, Noodle & Pebble want to share their Top 7 Tips for staying safe and cool:

1. Exercise Us Early In The Morning Or Later In The Evening
    These are the cooler times of the day and it's much more comfortable to exercise then.
    We never want to go out in the heat of the midday sun (and neither do you, most likely).
    Test the temperature of the ground with your bare feet, if it feels uncomfortably warm to you....our paws won't like it either!

2. Check For Signs Of Dehydration
    Mainly we cool down by panting, so if you see your dog drooling excessively please attend to him/her immediately.
    If the doggie has become lethargic or has blood shot eyes, these are signs the dog is dehydrated and needs water as a priority (and may also require veterinary care).
    Please remember that darker coated dogs and dogs that are overweight have a much greater chance of becoming dehydrated - pay attention.
3. Keeping Doggies Hydrated
Always keep a full water bowl close by when we're at home, adding ice can be great for keeping the water cooler longer.
    Remember to take a water bottle on all trips and walks, especially long walks or any car journey.
    You just never when the bottle of water might be needed, we've all known our pet parents get stuck in traffic on a hot day, at some point in their lives - what if we where with them! Water, please :)
4. Never Leave Any Dog In A Parked Car, Even In The Shade
    While this be obvious to many, unfortunately some people still take a risk.
    It is much hotter in the car than lots of people realize, and many dogs get excited because of the claustrophobia.
    We'd love to drive around town with our Pet Mom, Brenda, but she just won't risk it and we agree with her on this one...best we stay cool and calm at home.
5. Remember We Dogs Cool From The Bottom Up
    If you are spraying your dog with water, don't just gently spray the top of their coat - their stomach and paws will appreciate some soothing spraying too.
   Cooling from the bottom up means doggies enjoy lying on a wet towel in the shade...ahh, bliss...
6. When Air Conditioning Isn't Available...
You can set a fan in front of a bowl of ice, this works quite nicely and as a family can sit together and enjoy the cooler breeze.
7. Let Us Dig!
For some of us, digging keeps us cool, we like to dig up some dirt until the earth feels cooler and then just sit and enjoy the cooler earth in a shady spot.

    "Noodle loves digging, it's one of her very cute (& messy) qualities!" Pebble

We hope these tips have been a helpful reminder of some of the fun and simple ways to love, protect and keep your pooch cool in hot weather.

There will be many chocolate Easter eggs being shared this weekend with friends and family but did you know that 1.75 ounces of chocolate can be toxic and kill a dog!

It's natural to want to share treats with our pets, but please be warned this really can prove deadly.

One of the key ingredients in chocolate is theobromine which both dogs and cats systems cannot tolerate. High quality dark chocolate is most poisonous, with a small bar able to kill a Yorkie.

Theobromine can cause a range of problems in domestic animals because it triggers the release of adrenaline, which can lead to a greatly accelerated heart rate and an irregular heart beat. Beloved pets can vomit, suffer diarrhoea and excessive urination and become hyperactive. Unfortunately this can also be followed by depression, coma, seizures and death. It makes sense never to share chocolate with our pets, not just at Easter.

However, it's worth highlighting that chocolate is not the only potential health hazard shared at Easter often leading to pancreatitis in family pets.

For example, onions can be toxic, even a little amount! Cooked bones can also cause major problems because they are brittle and the sharp slivers can either lodge in the throat or pierce the stomach lining.

However, risks are not limited to chocolate, Easter lilies are a popular decoration and are deadly to cats who tend to nibble at their petals and leaves. If you suspect a cat has eaten lilies we strongly suggest the cat should be taken straight to the vet, as just a few pollen grains can lead to acute kidney failure.

Symptoms to watch out for include vomiting, frequent urination or ceasing urination altogether. Drooling, lethargy and a loss of appetite are also signs something is wrong.

For dogs, lilies are not generally deadly but can cause gastrointestinal distress.

Many of us spend Easter with friends, children and family who may not have pets or appreciate the hidden dangers of sharing a 'treat'. Please be extra vigilant and share the hidden dangers and respectfully request that no-one shares human foods.

A list of the most dangerous poisons to dogs and cats (per the RSPCA):

Every tag purchased from Pet Blessings generates an ID Tag donation on behalf of the pet and we match that donation. This means that two foster pets wear ID tags with their foster parents telephone numbers clearly visible.

Yes, many times these pets are both microchipped and licensed too, but studies have repeatedly proven that a Pet ID Tag is the best first line of defense, should the pet get lost. It makes a lot of sense, the first thing someone will do when they find a pet is call the phone number on the tag, it is easiest all around and the least stressful outcome for the lost pet. They find their way home so much more quickly.

However, sadly not all foster pets find forever homes and not every shelter is a No Kill facility. It matters greatly to us that any pet, that is going to be put to sleep, life does not go unnoticed and that they know someone cares and loves them.

At Pet Blessings we are passionate that these pets do not cross the Rainbow Bridge without acknowledging that their life mattered. We want to honor this is by donating tags, like the one photographed above. On each tag we write the heartfelt words "You Are Loved" and present each tag on a card with ribbon. The idea is that the tag and ribbon are tied onto the pets neck before they cross The Rainbow Bridge. I can't even write this without tearing up, and I invite you to consider if this is important to you too. If so, we would love you to join us in making this happen while we work towards having as many lives saved as possible.

If you are thinking about buying a gift for your beloved pet this holiday season please check us out, it is the gift that keeps on giving. The more tags we supply to loved pets the more fostered pets we can love and protect together. 'Tis a beautiful thing.

Today driving home from the Store I saw a beautiful black dog meandeirng up the hill near my home. I pulled over right away and was relieved to see he was wearing a tag with his details engraved on it. It was also obvious he is well taken care of and somehow managed to escape. His name is Bubba and he's adorable.

I called Bubba's number right away and left a voicemail saying that he was safe and I would take him home with me and to call me back ASAP. Interestingly, at this point, Bubba seemed to be enjoying his outing and he was the perfect gentleman and climbed in the car quite calmly.

When we arrived at my house, Noodle & Pebble weren't quite sure what to make of having an unexpected guest, but they did well and didn't get too jealous! Darcey Bussell didn't know about Bubba because I didnt know how he would react to kitties and didn't want to potentially stress Darcey out.

The good news...there is a very happy ending. Because Bubba was wearing an ID tag with his phone number, he made it back home safely within a couple of hours! He was a bit more excited by the time I drove him home, and I am sure he must have been wondering what on earth was happening in these strange surroundings.

It also struck me that whoever came home to discover Bubba gone probably had a very anxious moment or two to say the least especially before they heard the voicemail. Because Bubba's ID tag provided his home phone number, we gifted him a writeable ID tag so that his pet parent's can write their cell phone number for him to wear also. Heaven forbid he gets out again, but just in case, it is always better to include your cell number, I believe.

Tonight I'm cozied up and cuddling my three, counting my blessings that they are safe, happy and warm and Bubba is too.

It really is amazing how a little thing, like ensuring your pet his wearing a pet id tag 24/7, really can save a lot of heartache and get a pet home very quickly in the sad event they become lost.

Did you know that the number of dogs with Canine Pancreatitis spikes after Thanksgiving! Many vets anticipate seeing many more dogs a few days after this holiday because it takes a few days for the symptoms to show.

Lots of well intentioned pet parents and guests think feeding a little bit of this and that can't do too much harm...but please be warned it very possibly can! It really is kinder to share healthy dog treats vs Thanksgiving Day dinner treats.

Even if you don't allow anyone to feed them Thanksgiving food, please be vigiliant about emptying the trash can too. Lots of exciting smells will attract Fido and can cause havoc if he or she successfully raids the trash.

Symptoms: What to Watch Out For

Symptoms don't show up right away, it takes a few days and they can include, but are not limited to

- persistent vomiting (not necessarily connected to a meal). There may be no food at all in the vomit; it can be clear or colored (perhaps yellow). Your dog may throw up time after time in a period of several hours.

- abdominal sensitivy. Your dog may whimper or cry when held or picked up, especially if you hold him around the upper abdomen.

- diarrhea.

- standing with the back arched. The dog may look as if she is trying to imitate a Halloween cat, and she may hold this pose for several minutes.

- panting (a sign of physical stress).

Treatment

A dog with pancreatitis can die without treatment, so if you believe your dog is exhibiting signs of this illness, you should seek veterinary help immediately.

Your vet will perform blood tests. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, your dog will most likely need hospitalization, perhaps for several days.

Post-Recovery Diet

Fat is the enemy for a dog who has had pancreatitis, and all dogs who have had pancreatitis should be fed a high-quality, low-fat food. Unfortunately, once a dog has had pancreatitis, it may be at greater risk of a subsequent recurrence; a low-fat diet is a preventive measure.

Low-Fat Treats

If your pet his diagnosed with pancreatitis look for treats with 7% maximum crude fat content or less. Avoid rawhides or treats like pig ears. (Skin is full of fat - think of the skin on chicken!)

Life After Pancreatitis

Keeping your newly healthy pet on track requires a little more effort on your part, but that effort will pay off. Your dog can learn to love low-fat food and low-fat treats,and will even begin to look forward to them even as she used to beg for the old high-fat variety. Seeing her shiny eyes free of pain will be ample reward for the trouble you take to keep her diet nutritionally sound and her health off the path toward obesity-related illnesses like pancreatitis.

Sending you love & pet blessings this Thanksgiving,

It was a pleasure to tell Betty about Pet Blessings mission 'to reduce the number of lost pets ending up in shelters and sadly euthanized', because they were kept safe by wearing their engraved pet id tag 24/7 to love & protect them always. It really is the simplest first line of defense to quickly get them home if they were ever lost. She really liked that!

She loves and adores her Golden Retriever, Pontiac and I wanted to thank her for gifting her time at this event and presented her with a Pet Blessings engraved id tag for Pontiac and she loved it! It was a big silver star set with Aqua Blue Swarovski Crystals which will be beautiful against Ponty's golden coat. We hope he likes it too!

Betty gave a wonderful opening speech and talked about the great work that Dogs for the Deaf do and how positive their contribution is in the world. She very generously matched donations made that day up to $25,000! Way to go Betty. She's also on the Board of DFTD and I feel very blessed to be an Ambassador and part of this great group. I encourage you to check them out and get involved if your heart says 'yes', I volunteer for so many reasons, including:

Betty White supports it - which gives it huge kudos for me

EVERY dog is a rescue!

If a dog doesn't make it as a working dog they great care is taken to find them a Forever home

Robin Dickson (DFTD, CEO) her father started the organization, both her and her team are amazing and full of love

This organization creates changes in the lives of rescued dogs and people in such a positive way

Tiffany waited seven years to be matched with Rugby, because it was very important for her that she could take her dog to work. That's the longest time it has ever taken to find someone a match but they are perfect together...it reminds me that if it's worth having, it's worth waiting for!

There's lots more to share about this event and the kind hearted celebrities we had the pleasure of meeting, but Betty deserves to be front and center stage for her big warm heart and smile. Simply put, Betty is the best!

By sharing my love of animals & keeping them safe, connecting with others & expressing this passion freely & openly, I feel authentic, healthy, happy & joyful

Living by the mantra 'there is a gift in everything'; it shows up in many ways, one of which is me embracing my imperfections (no more asking does my b*m look big in this :))

Giving myself the freedom to be who I am meant to be (& not a people pleaser at home or in my career)

Not letting my age, ego or other people get in the way of trying something new (if not now, when?)

No attachment to being defined by others (it's ok if someone doesn't 'get' me)

Being blessed with a very supportive & loving husband (of just over one month). I waited a long time for the right 'rest of my life' partner, because if it's worth having it's worth waiting for.

There's a well known saying "I wish I was the person my dog thinks I am"; I'm also grateful for believing that each of us is that loving and lovable person already and our pets are smart enough to know it and we just need to let it in.

My invitation to you, is to take a few moments to reflect on and list the things in your life you are grateful for. Connecting with that space and sitting back and looking at what's on your list will probably show you that you are the person your pet thinks you are!

It’s a really big, scary world out there for cats and dogs who are lost and alone, far from home. And even though you may think your pet would never run away - never to be one of the lost ones cowering in an alley or running across a busy street - the sad fact is that it can happen to any pet.

For example, at Halloween many pets understandably become scared of all the noise, activity at the front door and in the house and there is a higher risk they may try and escape the noise and confusion.

Did you know that of the millions of dogs and cats are taken to animal shelters as 'strays' each year. Many of these animals are actually beloved pets and sadly only about 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats who end up in shelters without an engraved ID tag and microchip are ever reunited with their owners!

Why do so few pets get returned home?

- Because their pet parent failed to put easy to read identification on their pet. Sadly even the most responsible pet parent can be accidentally or unexpectedly separated from their pet.

Why is a microchip alone not enough?

- You want to make it really easy for someone to return your lost pet home; most people carry a cell phone and if your number is clearly engraved on the tag, the first thing they are likely to do is call YOU! You made it much easier for them to reunite you and your pet.

- If someone can't easily call you they have to take the pet somewhere, home or a shelter...that gives them a problem to deal with and involves more time. More time means less chance of being reunited. More variables now come into play in getting your pet home safely and quickly.

- Also, a little know fact is that a microchip can become embedded under a pet's shoulder (for example) and be very difficult to find in a scan. You are also relying on some busy person, probably multi tasking to keep scanning until they find it. Good luck with that.

-Your pet most likely has a microchip, embedded at the shelter you rescued them from or at your own vet's. Don't rely on the chip alone, that would be like relying on your air bags in a car accident but you'd forgotten to put on your seatbelt...not a good gamble!

That’s why every day at Pet Blessings we support and celebrate the American Humane Association's "Every Day Is Tag Day", we encourage all pet owners to always have an engraved id tag and microchip on their furry best friends.

Pet care is about more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes always tagging and microchipping your pet.

Don’t wait until it’s too late! Please get an engraved pet id tag for your beloved pet today and keep it on them 24/7!

Pet Blessings day will be celebrated by many this weekend and beautifully represents a gathering of love, protection and kindness towards animals.

For me, Pet Blessings are given and received, from us to our pets and them to us. My gateway to love is through my pets, and I believe this to be true for many people.

How kind and loving would the world be if we could share, witout hesitation, the same unconditional love, protection and kindness to each other as we readily share with our beloved pets.

I respect everyone's right to choose their path to love and God and lovingly share a prayer and pet blessings for stray and homeless pets.

To all the fur-beings who are lost,

Or homeless,

Or living as strays,

May they find a good meal to eat.

May they have shelter to keep them warm.

May they have comfort.

May they be shown kindness by strangers.

And may they return home, or find good homes.

May they rest in a place in which they can thrive.

Filled with love, with warmth, with tender caring,

with good food, with true companions

for all of their days.

However....next thing I see her start to move back and forth and heave... I panicked but tried to hide it (not very well) I darted across to remove her...but too late, a big ferocious hairball was now sitting in the man's briefcase. Oh brother...

Well to cut a long story short, he was very gracious and kindly tried to reassure me it was nothing!

Darcey....she sat looking at us, quite calm about the whole thing and refused to be in the least bit bothered.

Gotta love my pretty kitty.

Seems hard to believe it was 12 years ago, still get goose bumps when I think of that day. I was getting ready to leave my house in Scotland for the last time to fly out to start a new life in California. Just me and Darcey Bussell, my precious kitty.

The TV was on in the background and I saw the first plane hit the North Tower – I stopped in my tracks it was surreal and I stood there in disbelief! My first thought was there was a terrible accident, how could that happen. I called my friend immediately to ask if she knew about it and shortly thereafter the next plane crashed. This couldn’t be happening, could it?

The night before I was leaving my friends and I held a ‘last supper’ at my house, a final farewell, for a while anyway…my friends came back the next night and we all sat together crying and trying to understand what happened.

At this point I was now parted from Darcey. She was waiting for me at Heathrow, where she had to go through various vet checks etc. We were flying out on the same plane, which was very important to me. We were both starting a new life together, leaving Glasgow and everything we knew. It was exciting.

There was so much confusion because of what happened and fear too and I wanted some reassurance Darcey was ok and when would we be reunited? I’m only child, my parents died when I was relatively young and I have no children…my cat = my family, all of it. It was impossible to phone anywhere the lines were all busy. Also in those days it wasn’t easy to be put through to someone in the Animal Reception Center at Heathrow and in the circumstances, understandable too.

However, there was no consoling...me I was desperate to know that someone was caring for Darcey personally and she wasn’t being lost or forgotten with everything that was going on. Some very kind person eventually let me speak with Darcey’s animal handler – a lovely lady. She assured me that Darcey was doing great and not to worry…easier said than done, but somewhat a relief!

It took a week to get me on another flight to California, September 18th to be exact. My mom and dad’s wedding anniversary as it happens.

Darcey – she was sent back to Edinburgh, the main animal quarantine base for Scotland.

Alone, I flew to California and set about finding us an apartment. Darcey flew out the next Friday!

I picked up her up at San Diego Freight Terminal. When I walked in, I said to the person at the desk that I was here to pick up my kitty, Darcey Bussell and all I heard was a little ‘meow’ – she was just outside the reception area and heard me!

To say we were both ecstatic is an understatement…back together and heading off on our adventure.

Twelve years on and she is still with me. Our family is bigger, we have Noodle & Pebble and of course, Keith, my fiancé.

I’m getting married in less than a week on a very important day for me September 18, my mom and dad’s wedding anniversary, my 12th anniversary in California and it seemed the perfect date to start this next fantastic phase of my life.

It is so special that Darcey will be there, along with Noodle and Pebble…as we start this next phase of our journey together.

With love and blessings,

Do you ever go to work on a Monday and feel stressed, anxious and drained before the day starts?

Did you feel like that over the weekend, or when you have time off, when a new day dawned for you and your pets? Probably not!

So why is that and what can you do about it…

Be open to giving yourself to be permission to just be you, not worrying about what others think or how they will react. Yes, really!

For example, you’re in a meeting or dealing with a co-worker and some issue comes up, everyone is concerned about what the boss will think, say or do and they try to second-guess it. Politics are rife. Chances of getting it right are slim for the bad tempered boss, so why bother. Why not just do what needs done without resentment or frustration and listen more than talk.

Try approaching the situation the same loving and kind way you would with your pet; you just do what comes naturally, take care of the situation and continue to love them unconditionally. Problem gets solved and you didn’t waste time or energy worrying if your pet would still love you because of what you did or didn’t do or how you acted. Same goes in all situations in life, if we let it.

At some point we all get caught up in drama that we don’t need to and self-fuel the situation with our own thoughts. The good news…there's always a choice!

All I am asking is not to trust what I’m suggesting, but to try it, even just for today and see what happens.

You ‘re a very kind and loving person and if you let your diamond shine through the world will be a better place today just because you showed up as the real you!

How cool is that.

I really love this photograph; it makes me think of love, peace and being grateful for all the blessings in my life. One of the biggest blessings was having my own puppy aged 3, Whiskey. She was beautiful, a Collie mix, very smart and very loving.

Whiskey was in my life until I was 18 years old. She knew more about me than anyone in the World, because I told her everything! She was always there, constant and caring. Big puppy eyes staring into my soul. Funny how I trusted her and felt she completely understood me. When she passed, it was the first experience of loss in my life, and it hurt, oh how it hurt.

Through loving and losing her I eventually realized there is a gift in everything, even when it can be very hard to see it at the time. That is her legacy to me, and even to this day, many decades later, it is still how I live my life. From time to time we all struggle, life happens, but her gift to me really helps me remain at peace and know that all will be ok in the end. There is a wonderful old Indian saying, "It will all be ok in the end, and if it is not ok, then it is not the end".

People who love animals are blessed with an opportunity to step into a gateway of love and support every day, even when life seems challenging. Making connection with others through a kind word, a hug or a friendly smile all makes a positive difference.

I would love to read you comments on the legacy a pet has brought to your life and how that translates into connecting with others.

Love really is all around,

Cats are connoisseurs. Unlike dogs, they tend to be rather fussy and choosy...and not just about their food. Interestingly, many times, if their normal feeding routines are disturbed or their menu changes dramatically, they soon let us know they are displeased and will often reject their food.
