Unlike other animals, ferrets have a specific nutritional requirement that should be kept at all times. Naturally, their diet is mainly composed of the following: high meat based protein, high fats, and low fiber. As long as you maintain such a diet for your ferret, then you are sure that they are well taken care of in terms of their nutrition.

Aside from their usual meals, you can also provide them with snacks that can serve as additional treats for them. There are a lot of ferret snacks available in the market today so it may not be a difficult task for you to find one that will suit your pet ferret.

Just like their ordinary meals, it is also important that their snacks have the same nutritional value. This will help in their further development and also prevent them from acquiring diet related illnesses. Since ferrets are obligate carnivores, it is best not to feed them fruits, sugars or even cereals. Their anatomical make-up make them incapable of processing such materials and thus, when you feed them these, it may lead to digestive illnesses and even terminal ones.

For a healthy diet, you can provide your ferret with chicken or turkey baby food, at least a tablespoon a day. Since these foods are quite delicious for them, they can enjoy having it and even look forward of eating such foods for the following days. It may come as an advantage for you especially when he becomes sick since you can feed him this baby food and he will not resist it.

When an occasion comes that the food you are giving your pet is not already adequate for him, then it may be time for you to change snacks. However, in doing so, you must not change rapidly, rather slowly and gradually. Since ferrets have such delicate digestive systems, this means that any sudden change in their diet may generally be a bad thing. In changing snacks, what you can do is slowly introduce the new food in the old food as you decrease the amount of old food being given. This will mix the flavors of the two snacks which will make it easier for the ferret not to notice the difference.

Feeding your ferret snacks may be done together with his training. When he has done something good or has been neat in your house, then it will be your cue to give him his snacks. This will further let him realize that such actions will lead him to be fed and thus maintain such a habit.

Snacks are definitely fun to give to your pet ferrets. There are a lot of snacks available in the market today and they are quite affordable for purchase. Example of ferret snacks are chicken ferret treats, vitamin supplements, yogurt ferret treats, peanut butter treats and many more. Before availing such treats however, make sure that what you are getting have the right nutritional value for your ferret. As long as the ferret snacks are nutritious and you are giving your pet the much attention and care that he deserves, he will definitely be a happy ferret to be with.

About the Author

Jeff Ritter is the owner of Pet Ferret Center, and thrives on teaching others how to properly care for their pet Ferret. Unlike ticks, there are fortunately many more unfavorable conditions that can cause fleas to have a shortened life span. Fleas, because of their biological makeup do not favor dry areas. Since they cannot retain moisture when they breathe, they need humidity to survive.

Adults take a mere two weeks to form in their cocoon. This cocoon, or pupae when found cannot be killed by a spray. Not until the adults are emerging will a secondary spray or residual medicine kill the fleas. That's why having a good program of Flea and Tick Control is so important.

Peak conditions for fleas to live and develop are 65-70 F with a 70% relative humidity. Because of this, hot dry summers will severely inhibit the flea population. A rainy summer will help them increase in population.

With prevailing good conditions fleas can live up to 8 months as long as they have a decent meal during that time. Without that meal, an adult flea lifespan is shortened to one or two months.

With the right conditions, females can lay up to 800 eggs during their lifetime. They either lay them on the floor in a pets bedding material or on a host. The eggs will hatch in 2-12 days. Unfortunately, when good conditions do not exist one would think that the flea larvae would quickly die off. But they don't. They can develop at a much slower pace and can survive up to 200 or more days.

When these unfavorable conditions exist large populations of un-hatched flea pupae will gather. Once warmed or triggered by the presence of carbon dioxide, massive populations of fleas can hatch when a host is finally present. Once they do "hook on" to a host they are free to hitchhike wherever they like.

Take Control of the Fleas in Your Home and on Your Pet...

Unlike ticks, fleas have extremely strong hind legs. This allows them to jump up to 8" vertically and over 14" horizontally. Thinking they are confined to one area is absolutely incorrect. Keeping them confined to one area is nearly impossible.

In order to be able to rid your pet and home of fleas successfully, you have to treat the pet, indoor areas of the house and any outdoor areas most likely to contain the fleas at the same time. Treating only one area or just the pet will not break the life cycle of the fleas hatching.

Inside the house besides treating the infected areas, vacuuming is an effective approach to picking up eggs and adult stage fleas. Although successful at removing 50-60 % of the infestation, using a spray is absolutely a requirement.

There will be different life cycles of the Fleas taking place in different areas of the house, outside the house and on the pet all occurring at the same time. However, the areas around where the pet normally walks, sleeps or lays down will contain the highest concentrations of Fleas. This dictates how one should treat the overall process of Flea removal although prevention is still as important if not more than the Flea Control itself.

A residual spray that can control adult fleas should be used. Remember, flea larvae can last up to 200+ days when the conditions aren't right for them to hatch normally. A follow-up of the spray is recommended to kill the adults that do hatch at around 210 days.

Protecting your dog and cat with a proper Flea and Tick Control program is responsible pet care. Fleas and Ticks cause a lot of different problems for your pets including rashes, itching, allergic reactions and sometimes anemia.

Fleas can carry tapeworms and they in rare cases can cause death. Ticks carry infection and can cause paralysis. Making sure you have a proper Flea and Tick Control program in place to check your pets on a regular basis and the correct meds for prevention of infestation will keep them and their surroundings clear of these parasites.

Pets are great! Treat them with care, but don't wait until they already have the problem. Hi and thanks for reading my article!

About the Author

My site provides information on the nature of Flea and Tick Control issues with pets. Since you are looking at a baby ferret then you may want to know about the entire ferret birth process.

The female ferret is referred to as a "jill" and the male is a "hob." A jill's pregnancy cycle runs about 42 days. When she begins to build a nest and shows signs of restlessness then you can be pretty sure that she is pregnant. If you have a hob you will want to remove him during the pregnancy period since the jill will require more sleep and more food during the gestation period.

It is a good idea to transfer the jill to a dark secluded pen about two weeks before delivery. It is not unusual for the jill to pluck her hair during this time to help prepare the nest for the kits. Outside of providing plenty of water and food during this time it is best to keep her warm and leave her alone.

It is extremely important to leave the kits and the jill alone during the whelping period. Although it is a little gross the mother will usually eat the placenta. The hormones in the placenta help the mother in the production of milk.

It takes around 20 days for the kits to get their color and begins to open their eyes and about 6 weeks for them to be weaned.

Ferret food is relatively expensive at least compared to cat food. It also has a much higher level of protein and fat content that is needed for a healthy diet. The food that you choose should have at least 35% protein and 20% fat. Ferrets need a high quality and balanced fats in their diet such as eggs and poultry meal. They should not eat soy or corn gluten meal since it may cause urinary tract obstructions later in life. After they are weaned they will need to begin eating adult food. Since ferrets eat very little the food, even though more expensive, will last longer than that of a feline.

Fresh water should always be available and changed daily for any pet. Hold off on giving them treats until you are ready to begin housebreaking your ferret. Watch out for the dairy products as well. Young ferrets love milk and ice cream, however your ferret will more than likely get diarrhea.

Your baby ferret will need the essentials in life. A cage with a large door and plenty of room to grow, the cage for a young ferret will need solid bottomed cage. Bedding material must be disposed of or laundered weekly. Towels are always handy to use and easy to wash but be sure and keep their nails trimmed or they will get tangled up in them.

You'll also want to get a litter box and standard cat litter can be used.

One last thing or should I say things! TOYS, TOYS AND MORE TOYS! You can't have enough toys for these playful little creatures. They will begin to learn them by name and will get them for you. Oh yeah, they will also hide them in the strangest of places.

About the Author

Michael Weston is an expert on ferrets with over 20 years experience. However, it's also important to know WHAT things to ask the pet insurance provider. If you have never had pet insurance before, you might not know all the right questions to ask when looking for the perfect dog insurance or cat insurance provider. How can you ask the "right" questions if you have no idea what the right questions are?!? Here are a few questions you should find out about either by asking them or looking online for more information:

- Are you limited to a network of vets or do you pre-certify for vet care? How often do they update their network? How many are included? Can you have a guide book of available locations? Is there a vet located near you? I'll be honest, I had Ameriplan for a while for MY own health insurance and they said they had a network of Doctors. I thought okay cool that means I will always have someone to go to! And yet, every single time I was in search of a specialist, an eye care doctor or a dentist there either wasn't anyone in that category or they were 500 miles away! That doesn't exactly help me. So this is definitely an essential factor you want to find out about.

- How do they deal with pre-existing conditions? Do they offer insurance for a pet with a pre-complications? If so, what are the stipulations?

- Are you offered annual policies with clear renewal terms? Policies usually have a one term rate which means your pet will be guaranteed for one full year. Like most insurance for humans, the premiums will either increase or disease depending on age, number of files claimed and conditions.

- As with ANY insurance, you want and need to make sure that they have a stability and proven success with their insurance. How long have they been around? What kind of statistics can they offer to you when it comes to your pet? The longer a company is around, the longer they will be able to insure your pet!

- What types of packages do they have available? What are the prices? If they can't answer your questions, put you on hold for an exceedingly long time, or they are rude chances are this company won't be the best one for you. Questions are important, but so are manners and professionalism as well! While these are just companies and not vets that will actually be working ON your animals, but it's still important that they can answer all your questions and console all of your concerns.

You should also notice that there are insurance alternatives available on the market. I'm currently registered with a pet insurance company that provides with a 25% discount card for my vet, no questions asked, no annoying paperwork, no conditions or health check, and very low price.

About the Author

www.PetAssure.com is the preferred alternative to insurance coverage for your family pet. Unlike pet insurance, all pets are covered; regardless of age, medical condition or any pre-existing condition. There are no exclusions, no deductibles and no waiting for reimbursement.

By this I mean you always need to make sure that there is plenty of water around for them to drink. People have been studying Animal Behavior for years now. One thing they all seem to agree on is that cats prefer to drink water out of a tap or some sort of flowing system verses a static bowl.

So one of the product we took a serious look at was the Drinkwell Pet Fountain. Your cats health could be in jeapordy if they plenty of water available on demand. And the Drinkwell Pet Fountain provides a steady stream of 5 inches of falling water. Your Pet doesn't like the idea of sipping stagnant water. By sipping from a fountain like steady stream of water that the Drinkwell Pet Fountain provides, your cat will be happier and so will you since these fountains are easy to maintain.

This fountain has the capacity to hold over fifty ounces of water at once. You even have the option to purchase an extra water reservoir for it. This reservoir happens to be sold separately but if you do purchase it, you'll have the capacity to hold over one gallon of water at a time. Once your cat has the ability to access their water in this easy fashion, they are prone to stay away from the kitchen and bathroom faucets as well as steer clear of your restrooms and sinks. This particular product is officially endorsed by Veterinarians and has received other accolades.

A common reason your cat could end up getting a urinary tract infection or kidney disorder is because they don't have enough clean water in their system. It only takes a couple minutes to follow the manufacturers simple instructions and setup the Drinkwell Pet Fountain. It isn't rocket science, just a few pieces like the Carbon Filters and AC Adapter that you need to concern yourself with.

If you are the owner of a single pet household, this product could be the perfect solution for you. Also we wanted to mention that this product comes with a large charcoal filter that gets rid of nasty tasting water and odors. This will give your cat the best opportunity to continue to stay hydrated. With all the issues these days regarding saving water, it doesn't make sense to leave your hose tap running anymore for your cat. And cats do tend to hate water sitting in a bowl.

One reviewer of this product mentioned that they had a cat that was aging and that had to be reminded to drink as often as possible. They also mentioned that the motor was very quiet and that you could barely hear it. However they also mentioned that every few days they had to refill the internal reservoirs. They also mentioned that there were a couple areas within the reservoir that made it difficult for them to clean it. These of course were built into the product when it was manufactured.

About the Author

Let Brian Garvin and Jeff West teach you more about the Cat Water Fountain and the Drinkwell Pet Fountain on our website today.

Sometimes dogs may not get the care they deserve because their owners are too busy with their own day to day activities.

There are so many things that you can do to keep your dog healthy and in shape, it just takes a little time and effort on your part. I'd like to share with you a few quick and easy ways that I have found help to keep my dogs in shape and healthy.

Hopefully you'll be able to take my advice and build upon it to provide your pet a happy and healthy lifestyle. One of the most important ways, in my opinion, to keep your dog healthy and in shape is by having them get plenty of exercise. My wife and I love to take our dogs for walks not only because it's a great opportunity for them to get the exercise they need, but it gives my wife and I another great opportunity to chat about anything that may be on our minds. It's a great bonding time for us and for the dogs, plus the benefit of getting exercise at the same time. We usually try to take a couple 30 minute walks each day.

There are other ways that you can help your dog get the exercise he or she needs. Playing fetch with tennis balls and other dog toys, going to the lake for a swim, and my personal favorite, grouse hunting, are other great ways for getting exercise. The important thing to remember is that daily exercise helps promote good health.

Another way of keeping your dog healthy is a healthy diet. I've had great luck with our dog's health by maintaining consistency in what they are being fed. I've learned that sticking with a good brand of dry dog food is generally a good way to have a healthy diet and it's typically not advised to switch brands too often. Switching brands can sometimes upset your pet's digestive pattern and can be disruptive to their overall eating habits. We tend to stay away from excess treats and other rawhides because they too can sometimes be upsetting to a dog's overall digestive process. So in many cases, being consistent when it comes to your dog's diet can be a great way to keep your dog healthy.

The final tip for keeping your dog healthy is also related to your dog's diet, not what type of diet, but the portioning of your dog's diet. We recently switched our dogs to a two-a-day meal plan which means they're being fed once in the morning, and once in the late afternoon. They are still receiving the same portion size, but it's split up into two separate meals. This has proven to be very effective, and our dogs appear to be much more energetic and have also trimmed some excess weight off the edges. I am not claiming that this is the right type of diet for your dog, nor am I saying you should feed your dogs in this manner. Obviously, every dog is unique and it may or may not be suitable for your dog, so you should consult your veterinarian first before trying this type of feeding schedule.

These are just a few tips for keeping your dog in shape and require little, if any, time to carry out. Combine these with the day to day love and affection that you show your dogs, and they'll be well on their way to being a happy and healthy pet.

About the Author

Find dogs for sale and other animals for sale At FarmMedley.com

After all, they are a part of the family aren't they? And what is worse, is seeing them suffer knowing that they depend on us completely for their well being. I know because my wife and I have a spoiled little dog.

Our dog is a rambunctious little wire haired terrier, all of 12 pounds when she is soaking wet. Her name is Cassie and we love her dearly. So when she came down with a yeast infection in her ear we were really upset because she was scratching her ear until it bled. We had no idea that dogs could get yeast infections in their ears, so we took her to the vet to get her checked out.

The diagnosis was indeed a yeast infection of the ear. The vet wrote a prescription for some drops and after about 2 weeks they worked to clear up the infection, but the vet bill was a bit pricey. Wow, the total bill came to almost $200, just for a diagnosis and some ear drops!

Unfortunately, a year later little Cassie was showing signs of a yeast infection in her ear again. So I started to do some research about yeast infections in dogs. Maybe I could find an effective treatment for Cassie that was a little less expensive than $200 a pop.

What I immediately found out was that yeast infections are quite common in dogs, especially in the ears because they are warm and moist which is an ideal environment for yeast to grow. A lot of different things can lead to a yeast infection in your dog's ear, but it mainly boils down to an imbalance in your pet internally.

Yeast is naturally occurring in dogs and it will usually not bother the animal. But when there is an imbalance in your pet's internal system then yeast can overgrow and cause problems, i.e., a yeast infection of the ear.

Many different circumstances can lead to your dog's internal system being out of equilibrium, antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria that keep yeast in check, a weak immune system due to an illness can allow yeast to flourish, a scratch or wound in the ear could allow yeast to infect the wound.

It is important to examine your dog's ears periodically to check for anything irregular. Catching a yeast infection early before it gets out of control is key to being able to treat it quickly, effectively and save your doggie some suffering.

When checking your dog's ears for a yeast infection you will want to specifically look for cuts, abrasions, reddish rash, swelling, crusty scabs, oozing, and a bad smell. Also, your dog will probably be scratching the ear excessively, or possibly rubbing the ear against an object (the floor) or with its paw, shaking its head, and whining.

Very importantly, many bacterial infections have almost the same symptoms as yeast infections but require a completely different treatment. So if you are not absolutely sure, it is always best to have a vet check it out. But if your dog is prone to yeast infections and you know the signs then you could save yourself a reoccurring vet bill by using some home treatments that are very effective for clearing yeast infections. These home remedies are just as effective as some medications the vet would prescribe, but far less expensive. Here is one you can try:

Once you have a confirmed case of yeast infection the first course of action is to clean the ear with a mild ear cleansing solution that can be found at most any drug store. Or you can use a diluted solution of white vinegar and water. Gently squirt the solution into the ear canal massaging it as you do so. Use a cotton ball to wipe away excess fluid and debris. Allow the ear to dry or pat the ear dry as much as possible. Now use the herb pau d'arco which can be found in most natural herbal stores and is known to kill yeast. Mix the pau d'arco with mineral oil and again squirt the mixture into the ear canal and massage the ear as before. Do this twice daily for about a week. Keep your dog's ears clean and dry to avoid further yeast infections. Do not hesitate to take your pet to the vet if the infection worsens or gets out of control.

About the Author

For a comprehensive guide to holistic, natural, and home remedies for your dog or cat go to: "Home Remedies for Cats & Dogs - A Guide to Healing Your Pet The Natural Way"

There are a number of inspiring sources for fast doggie names including fast vehicles, fast weather, and synonyms for the word fast.

Some vehicles suggest excellent fast names. Clipper, which was a type of very speedy ship in the 1800s, is a great name. Fast names from flying vehicles include Jet, Missile, and Rocket.

Weather of different types, which are often fast moving, can be used as names. Lightening is extremely fast, and so a good fast name. Some types of storms make fantastic names, especially for a dog that is both quick and a bit destructive as well. These names include Cyclone, Hurricane, and Tornado.

Some things in outer space move very quickly, including Mercury - which is both the fast moving planet that orbits (Orbit is yet another good name) closest to the sun and was also the Roman God with winged shoes. Comets are fast moving objects that sail through our galaxy. Meteors become extremely fast when they enter the Earth's atmosphere.

Some words used in human running can be names for sprinty dogs. Both Dash and Sprint are names for fast paced races. Racer, Runner, and Track are also good names.

Things that are fast or even explosive can be used. Bullet, nitro, and rifle are good names for fast dogs, especially ones that are also a bit destructive.

Synonyms for the word fast are all good choice for zippy puppies including Rapid, Quick, Speedy, and Zippy.

Finally, words that just sound fast make some of the best names for an express canine. Consider Accelerate, Bolt, Express, Flash, Ricochet, Ripper, Sonic, Sparky, Streak, Turbo, Velocity, Zinger, Zip, Zoom.

Read more about Names for Fast Dogs at www.PetNum.com.

About the Author

I'm a freelance computer programmer living in San Diego California with my wife and our 3 cats. They are so cute and lovable when you bring them home that you shower them with so much love and pamper them. It is easy to spoil them but when they start to make a nuisance of themselves, you have only yourself to blame.

"Secrets to Dog Training" gives you a powerful insight into dealing with nearly 25 different species of dogs with different behavior patterns. You can learn all you wanted to know of how to stop you dog from chewing things, how to toilet-train a pup and the do's and don'ts you need to be aware of when bringing up a pup. The book is interesting and includes photographs of how a dog is trained to refrain from doing things he is not supposed to. You do not have to punish your dog by beating him black and blue or using words that can be easily misunderstood. A dog does not respond to the words so much as the tone of voice used.

How to stop your dog from chewing things is a question most woman ask when they find their puppy has chewed up a corner of their antique rug or a favorite slipper! Using tried and tested methods gives you the cutting edge over disciplining your pet the right way. No doubt, it takes a lot of patience and time, but once the pup has understood your stand on certain issues, they are unlikely to make the same mistakes again.

The advantage of learning to train a dog is that you are in command of the situation. You can keep your house clean with no dog poop around and not worry that it can overturn your most prized possessions. You can ask your dog to fetch, sit or accompany you on your walk by using the different methods given in the book. How to stop your dog from chewing things need not cause you more angst. In time, your pup understands your commands and begins to learn who is boss. You continue giving it the love it requires and have your pup "eating out of your hands"!

About the Author

CLICK HERE to get your dog to obey all over your house rules even when you're not around. They are cute, cuddly, warm and affectionate and known to be man's best friend. You may want to get a pup and enjoy watching it grow to be a full-grown beauty. You need to train a pup right from the time it begins to waddle around the house. If you can do this successfully, you will have a lovable pet and great watchdog to protect you, care for you and be your constant companion.

Training is not easy. One tends to spoil anything that is small and looks helpless. Your first instinct when you see a pup is to spoil it with so much love and pampering. Unfortunately, this does not work and soon you will have a little monster that goes around yelping, biting and disobeying every command. Discover how to stop your dog from biting, dirtying your carpet or yakking away for attention, by scouring the internet for ideas, buying books that teach you dog training or seeking advice from other dog owners. You should do this as early as possible as training a pup is easier than when a dog is well grown.

"Secrets to Dog Training" is an interesting book that can be downloaded almost immediately online. The book has systematic instructions, pictures, video-clips and innovative techniques that could help you learn how to stop your dog from biting and making a nuisance of himself. The author depicts live case studies and delves in detail on twenty-five dog problems that could occur when you keep a pet in your house.

Dogs can be trained to do what you want if you know how to handle them properly. You do not have to chain your dog when you are expecting company unless your guests have an aversion for pets. It would be most embarrassing if you had unexpected important guests and your dog, for some reason, took a dislike to them and snapped at them. It is necessary for you to set aside time and learn the different methods you can adopt on how to stop your dog from biting anyone. It is better to be safe than sorry.

About the Author

CLICK HERE to get your dog to obey all over your house rules even when you're not around. Another common behavioural problem that your Labrador can show is that of becoming destructive and this in turn is generally due to his becoming anxious about something. Because dogs have advanced hearing capabilities, they can become aware of things even before humans get wind of these things and thus your Labrador may behave in a manner that is incomprehensible to human beings and so, this is another common Labrador problem that pet owners will have to contend with. It is also always possible to condition your Labrador to not become skittish when he hears various kinds of sounds and a simple Labrador training step you can use is to play recordings of certain sounds at low volumes and then increasing the volume gradually to make your Labrador get accustomed to these sounds. In fact, this is an especially useful way to becalm your Labrador who could otherwise become so nervous that you may even be forced into giving him anti-anxiety medicines to overcome his fears. Socialising you Labrador from a very early age can help to prevent these anxieties in its later life. Labrador problems are generally not a major concern for pet owners and with timely Labrador training you can easily ensure that your pet behaves in an appropriate manner at all times.

About the Author

http://www.labradortraining.org

Belonging to this group are some of the most intelligent dog breeds which include the admired German Shepherd, most famous for its police work and the Border Collies, the most intelligent of all breeds. Very bright, trainable and rather determined breeds such as Rottweilers, Dobermans and Akitas have become extremely popular, even trendy. Reliable, brawny and harnessing first-rate stamina, they make great companions for adults and children alike. They range from the tall and lanky Irish Wolfhound to the short-legged Dachshund in size. They are the original hunting dogs, many pre-dating the gun-assisting hunters in their sporting group. Unfortunately, these are the dogs you're likely to find at the local shelter or dog pound, often the result of accidental breeding between two un-sterilized dogs. Terrier breeds are diverse, and some of them are listed here: Airedale Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Border Terrier, Bull Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Glen of Imaal Terrier, Irish Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Skye Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Welsh Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier. These Terriers are all great dogs and with the right effort can be trained easily. If you can't decide between a Shepherd, a Setter or a Poodle, get them all, adopt a mutt, a mixed breed. These dogs are often some of the smartest, gentlest and most easily trained of all dogs. Hound dog breeds, a catchall phrase for breeds that do not seem to fit in elsewhere, from the cuddly Bichon Frise, a little too big to be considered a toy, to the striking Dalmatian and the stunning but difficult Chow Chow. Some dog breeds under this group include American Eskimo Dog, Bichon Frise, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Finnish Spitz, French Bulldog, Keeshond, Lhasa Apso, Lowchen, Poodle, Schipperke, Shiba Inu, Tibetan Spaniel and Tibetan Terrier. In more modern times, the Poodle's intelligence and trainability saw it employed in show business, commonly in circuses. Kid-friendly dog breeds. While most breeds of dogs are great with young children some are even more gentle than others and can easily be trained so that you will never have to worry about your child being around them. This group includes the sheepdogs and cattle dogs, including the amiable Collie breeds, Golden Retrievers and that regal breed, the Corgis.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE The long hair of the Lhasa Apso is due to a naturally prolonged growth phase that was emphasized by selective breeding for thermal protection and aesthetic reasons. You probably would like to know why these canine chums want to always stick out their tongue, we'll tell you. Even the size of a canid's ears plays a part in temperature control. All dog paws are the same, although there are variations in shape depending on the breed's bone structure. The fur can be puffed up to trap warm air in cold weather or held closely against the skin to release heat on warm days. Most hound dogs feature hanging or pendant ears, while many terriers have semi-erect button ears in which the tips fold over and hang in a V-shape, partially covering the opening. Consider the most noticeable dog feature first- the hair. The wire-haired coat of the dachshund features a higher quantity and density of the harsh primary hairs in a dog's coat. Well, here's the information you need to know to get to know and love your dog better and make him or her a better trained pet.

WHY THE HELP? Now, if you have your carefully selected dog already, one question lies before you: How does this dog follow my commands? What if he or she doesn't follow what I say You're probably training your dog improperly, and you don't know it. With this guide you could stop spending money on carpet cleaners and stop replacing things your dog has destroyed. You won't need any dog training equipment. In minutes, you can convert your badly behaved pet into the best friend you bargained for and keep them that way for life.

Dog Training & Obedience Secrets
Cut your dog training in half. They are virtually everywhere. When talking about dog carriers for the purpose of this article, we are discussing carriers for small dogs that are usually soft sided and come in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. There are some for toting your pet around town, others that are back packs, some that are actually purses that hold your dog, and others for traveling long distances with your pet. Some even have wheels. A quality pet carrier is usually approved for airline travel and they have been gaining a lot of popularity on the airlines in the last little while. They allow your pet to travel up in the cabin of the aircraft with you as long as they fit under the seat in front of you. The manufacturers of most high quality dog carriers took that into consideration when designing them for that purpose. As always with the airlines, be sure to contact the specific airline you are traveling on to get the exact rules and requirements for pet travel on that particular airline. Some of the qualities to look for when choosing a dog carrier for your pet are comfort and quality. Look for one that is comfortable for you as well as your pet. You are the one that will be toting your pet around in his new portable carrier, so find one that suits your style and use. Make sure you get a high quality item. It will stand up to the wear and tear it goes through and will also be much more comfortable for you and your pet. You don't have to get the most expensive dog carrier on the market. In fact, there are many very nice items out there that don't cost an arm and a leg. Shopping for dog carriers should be a fun and rewarding experience for dog lovers. Like we said before when shopping for a dog carrier, you will find that they come in many shapes, sizes and forms. Making sure you pick the correct size is one of the most important aspects of choosing a carrier for your pet. Be sure to measure your pet before looking for a dog carrier. Then, when looking at dog carriers, choose one that will allow him to stand up turn around and lie down in it. Make sure the opening is big enough for your pet to stick her head out and pick one that has plenty of ventilation. Fashionable carriers for your pet are here to stay. You can have a lot of fun with them and also look out for your pet's safety.

About the Author

Robert Jones is the owner of Canine Crate Store home of the best dog crates and kennels. It's one thing to give a dog or cat food that will allow them to grow and stay alive. However, like with humans, it's quite another to find the perfect balance to improve immune function, cognition, behavior and prevent cancer. You want organic, you want natural, you want the best natural food for your pet, but how do you choose? Here are the answers to selecting among the best natural pet foods.

Freshness -- the fresher and less processed the better. The more processed the food, the greater loss of nutrients.

Meats -- For our dogs and cats, meat must be the main source of protein because they are carnivores by nature. Grains are an inferior protein source and cats tolerate them less well than dogs. Higher grain and carbohydrate diets can cause weight gain and possible health problems.

Vegetables and fruit -- These foods contain necessary and beneficial antioxidants and vitamins which need to be included in a well balanced diet. This is truer with dogs, because cats are more exclusively carnivores.

Variety -- You can survive by eating the same thing every meal, every day, but it would not be healthy in the long run and certainly not as enjoyable as having some variety. Different foods through combining, mixing and rotating are fine. Every meal does not have to be perfectly balanced, but a variety of healthy natural pet food for your dog will create balance over the course of the week.

Supplements -- It is a good idea to include some fish oil and a multivitamin. The multivitamin is very important since your dog's or cat's food is probably less varied and fresh than what you eat.

Here is your suggestion guide to choosing healthy natural pet food, and creating a healthy natural pet food plan. Not all natural pet foods are equal, and not all natural pet foods provide the same health benefits and nutritional value.

These natural pet foods are in keeping with a holistic approach to organic feeding and highest quality available.

Natural pet food types

Raw Food

Raw food comes frozen to keep in the freezer and thaw before feeding; mostly chicken, turkey necks, fresh ground meat and bones; along with fruits and vegetables. Raw turkey and chicken necks are a wonderful source of natural calcium, phosphorus and a great way to clean teeth. Raw bones are a healthful treat and help add variety to the dog's diet.

Premixes for home Prepared foods

Premixes are the best solution for people who want to feed a natural homemade pet food diet, but do not have the time for the additional preparation and planning. Natural pet food premixes take the guess work out of constructing a balanced meal. All you do is add the meat of your choice and water.

Dehydrated and Freeze Dried

For this group, just add water or boiled water to reconstitute a natural pet food meal. This adds freshness to a canned or dry kibble diet.

Canned

The canned type of natural pet food is a way of adding variety to a natural pet food diet, and much better than straight dry kibble. If you are only feeding dry kibble, try mixing in a can of the natural pet food variety. Another option would be to feed one in the morning, and the other in the evening.

Dry Kibble

This is the less expensive and easiest diet in natural pet food available options. It is not recommended that kibble be a large part of a cat's diet. The feeding of dry kibble to cats contributes to the possibility of many chronic health problems that include urinary tract and kidney disease along with obesity.

A natural pet food feeding plan recommended by one particular veterinarian is to feed a combination of raw food and dehydrated food, along with salmon oil and a supplement.

To supplement or not to supplement, that is the question.

No matter which of the natural pet food options you choose, a good nutritional supplement will assist in optimizing your feline's or canine's health by seeing they receive enough needed vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients along with a natural pet food diet.

Click here to see an informative video about what's really in dog food.

About the Author

We have existed as a company since 1985, but it was a love of dogs, the dogs that have been a part of our life, and the passing of one dog in particular, Rusty, that inspired the creation of http://www.CalloftheDog.com and http://www.CalloftheDogShop.com -- created to provide the things your dogs and pets need. He is a friendly and devoted companion.

These dogs have a dark beard and mustache, medium-length muzzle, small dark and deep-set eyes with long eyelashes, heavy feathered ears, black nose and a tail that curls over his back. He carries himself with dignity.

Their durable coat is long, straight and heavy which drapes to the floor covering their eyes. It's not a silky or soft coat. This coat serves as insulation barrier to cool in the summer and warm in winter. The most popular colors are: honey, cream and gold. It also comes in brown, slate, smoke and multicolored of brown and white and white and black.

Lhasa Apso dogs weight between 12 - 15 pounds, are 10 - 11 inches tall and live to be around 15 years.

The Lhasa Apso's breed goes back to 800 B.C. Their home is the land of Tibet. They are called the "Bark Lion Sentinel Dog" there. For two thousand years this breed was only bred in Tibet by holy men and nobles. They were used as watchdogs in temples and monasteries. They were finally spread to other parts of the world because Dalai Lama, Tibet's ruler presented them to foreign diplomats. They were introduced in the U.S. in the 1930's.

These dogs have acute hearing and can tell if a friend or stranger is coming. Therefore, they make great watchdogs and their bark makes one think he is a big dog!

CHARACTERTICS AND TEMPERAMENT

* Intelligent
* Spirited
* Lively
* Outgoing
* Assertive nature
* Affectionate
* Friendly

Lhasa Apso's can be very possessive, independent and a bossy little dog but has great affection for his master. He does not tolerate rough or badly behaved children. He can be good with children if socialized with them but better if just an adult home or one with older children.

These dogs need to be socialized and obedience trained early. If not they may become aggressive or overly shy toward strangers as they are naturally suspicious of strangers. They need to be taught properly with patience, consistency and kindness. Since they can be stubborn, training requires positive reinforcement and they respond well to praise and rewards. These dogs need a family willing to do these things and you will have a well-adjusted dog.>

These dogs need considerable grooming to maintain their luxuriant coats. They need to be brushed once a day a to prevent matting and knots from forming. They also need to have their eyes and ears cleaned. Use dry shampoo when needed. They are considered an average shedder.

Lhasa Apso's make excellent apartment dogs but do like daily walks and like to play indoor games.

When purchasing a dog it is best to buy from a responsible breeder to ensure you are getting a healthy dog. Ask for a referral from the American Kennel Club or your vet.

About the Author

Sandy has a web site on small dog breeds with information on different breeds including pages on dogs good with children and seniors, most popular dogs, choosing a dog and breeder, vet, dog houses and much more. http://www.small-dogbreeds.com

While you may take pictures sparingly, you will likely end up with far more dog photos than you need for a photo album or frame on your desk. If your pictures are digital, however, you may have other options for using your extra dog photos.

Take Them Public On websites such as Woofsites.com and photo sharing sites, you can make your photos available for the world to see. Rather than keeping your pictures to yourself, you can even assign them a creative commons license on some sites and allow others to take your photos for use on their websites and projects.

If you have a photographer's eye, feel free to take creative pictures of your pets. Go ahead - dress your dog up and snap his picture. Get dog photos of every pose, posture and position your pet enjoys throughout the day. Head outside and get a few action shots while you throw the Frisbee or teach him to chase a ball.

Then, come back inside and upload the pictures to your various web accounts. Put your favorites on your pet's personal Woofsite or website and then throw the rest out for the world to use at will. Not only is this a great excuse to take as many pictures as you want, you'll also be able to get publicity and visitors to other websites or profiles you may have. Then you can discuss being a pet owner or to share other photos with visitors - perhaps even share some photos you're selling instead of giving away.

Go Artistic You can offer your dog photos to the world to use for its artistic whims or you can get rather artistic yourself. Take your digital dog photos and work with them in a photo editing program to make unusual collages and collections of prints. Embed different colors and try different crops and effects to create a one-of-a-kind, highly personalized style of artwork to use in your home.

Over time, you may even develop a style that might be popular with other animal lovers. Start with your pet photos and modify them to become a piece of true artistic genius. Then, have the artwork printed professionally and take it to a local flea market or street fair. You never know who might be interested in what you have to offer. You may make enough to justify a new digital camera and upgraded software.

If you're web savvy, you can sell your dog photo art online though a website. Print and frame pictures for sale at local markets, and then include snapshots or watermarked images on your website to reach even more potential customers. If not for the tools that we use in dog training we may have gone nowhere and probably rats became man's best friend. As a dog lover, I actually shudder at the thought. And if that were the case, then there would never have been a domesticated dog and they would all be in the wilderness living like wolves. Thank God for the training tools.

One of these tools happens to be the Dog Training Treats, also known as doggie treats but for this purpose, are to be used as a training tool. Using dog training treats is also known as the reward method in dog training. Training treats are very effective in the learning phase of the training.

A pat on the head may be sufficient for some dogs who has shown good behavior, other dogs may need a little incentive to consistently respond to our commands. Treats thus become an excellent way to reinforce desired behavior if they are used properly.

Using dog training treats is one of the most positive and encouraging ways to train your dog to behave in an acceptable manner. This is a better alternative to other training methods that use violence and physical punishment. The dog training treats method is used together with a lot of praising for something the dog has learned and done well.

Using training treats also gives your dog something to look forward to during these training sessions. They are always happy to receive these treats from you and they don't even know it's a learning process.

It is important to note that in using training treats the reward must be given to the dog immediately. Otherwise the dog might believe that it is being rewarded for another thing that he has done rather than the behavior that we want rewarded.

Consistency should also be practiced by the owner and all members of the family that interact with the dog. The same commands should be used by all so as not to cause the dog some confusion. It also means that we should reward the desired behavior and not the unwanted ones.

For the dog training treats to be fully effective, always use treats that your dog really likes. Something enticing and irresistible to him. It should be small and soft, something that he could gulp down immediately. Something from your refrigerator can be used as treats like small pieces of hotdog, cheese, cooked chicken and beef have proven effective. While others prefer to purchase small soft commercial dog treats that are readily available.

Most dogs prefer the food treats but some of them respond to toy treats rather than the former. In the same way, give your dog their favorite toy every time he has done good in the training process.

There are two ways in using training treats. First as a reward for a desired behavior, and second as a motivator, in the class of the carrot and stick method, to induce a certain behavior.

Using training treats is an enjoyable learning experience for the dog and his owner/trainer. But full knowledge of using training treats is essential. If used in an improper way, the dog might develop some unwanted traits like always expecting treats before doing something desirable or even begging.

Dog Training Treats is an important tool in training. It also strengthens the bond between the owner and pet more than any other training method because it is not based on fear. Trust and respect grows between them and the experience is something that cannot be forgotten easily. Training treats make the training process fun for both dog and owner simply because the dog gets a reward and the owner gets so much satisfaction in getting the desired behavior from the pet.

As pet lovers, we all know that, that feeling is priceless.

About the Author

Scott Williams is a freelance copywriter with a special interest in pets and an expert in dog training . You need to commit to doing everything you can to keep it healthy and provide a quality life for it. However choosing a healthy Yorkie puppy is also important and this article should give you some helpful information on choosing one.

If you have ever been on a pet forum online, you have probably read about breeder horror stories. Buying from a reputable breeder is one of the most important steps in your purchase. Ask the breeder for credentials, such as how long they have been in business, and even go one step further by looking them up online to see if anyone has any negative experiences with them.

When you are looking for puppies, always ask to see the brothers, sisters, and most importantly the parents. This will give you a good idea of how the puppies will turn out.

Pay close attention to the behavior of the puppies. If a puppy is looking confused or drowsy, it could be a bad sign which could lead to further health problems. You should want a puppy which has a lively personality, and looks generally happy.

Take notice of the Yorkie puppies coats. A healthy coat should look clean and shiney. Unhealthy coats can be caused by health problems.

You should check the Yorkie puppies ears for ear mites. That can be a sign of a neglecting breeder.

After you make your decision on a Yorkie puppy, you should take your puppy to the Veternarian to get a professional checkout.

About the Author

For a more in depth look at Yorkies and Yorkie clothes, visit http://yorkiedogclothes.net

You can expect support, detailed care instructions and a food sample from a good Shar Pei breeder. Ask your Shar Pei breeder if they have a policy of taking dogs back to avoid abandonment or shelters.

When you are ready to choose a Shar Pei breeder you are going to need to ask a lot of the right questions because your breeder is someone you will be in contact with for many years to come. You need to trust your breeder and be able to communicate with them. And one of the ways you can determine that is by asking the right questions during the breeder search process. This is a little primer on what some of those questions could be and what answers you should be looking for.

Any reputable breeder is going to be listed with a national breeder registry, using the registry's breeding standards as his or her own. You are going to need to question a breeder that is not listed with a registry and find out what they use for breeding standards and also why they choose not to be part of a national organization that lends credibility to their business.

With a good Shar Pei breeder the relationship between owner and breeder does not end when the transaction is finished. A reputable breeder will be there for the owner for many years to come to make sure that the owner knows how to give quality care to their new dog and offer any advice that the owner may need on how to care for their new pet. It is important to have this open communication with your breeder and if your breeder is not into communication after the sale then it is time for a new breeder.

When a new owner leaves the property of a reputable Shar Pei breeder they do so with detailed care and feeding instructions and a sample of the dog's food so that the owner knows what to feed their new dog. If your breeder does not indicate they offer this kind of assistance to owners then you may want to move on to a different breeder.

You want to know that your Shar Pei breeder is prepared to be there for the good times and the bad and that is why one question you should ask is if they have a policy of taking back dogs they have sold. You won't get a refund but if you find yourself in a situation where you cannot care for your dog anymore at least you know that your breeder cares enough to not want to see the dog abandoned or wind up in a shelter. Gestures like that is a wonderful thing for a breeder to offer.

Always ask a lot of questions of your prospective Shar Pei breeders. Sometimes a breeder will offer pet insurance for free so be sure to ask about that too. You can never ask a breeder too many questions and the more reputable breeders will insist that you ask a lot of questions so that you are totally comfortable with them before you buy your dog.

About the Author

Melissa Coleman is a much sought after speaker, holding lectures about a number of canine subjects. There is good information on what to ask a potential Shar Pei breeder in this article. You can expect advice and care instructions from a good Siberian Husky breeder. A reputable Siberian Husky breeder will offer free pet insurance.

The relationship between breeder and owner is very important so when you decide it is time to get a Siberian Husky for a pet you want to be sure to choose a reputable Siberian Husky breeder. There are ways to check and see if you are getting a reputable Siberian Husky breeder and those ways are simple to follow. It is really important when you consider that if you do not check out your breeder you could be asking for years of problems with your pet and you do not want to put your family through that.

All good breeders are listed with a national breeder registry and subscribe to the breeding standards of that registry. Breeding standards are developed through years of experience and research and if you are talking to a breeder that does not subscribe to a standard then you may be talking to a fake Siberian Husky breeder and that is not what you want to be doing.

One of the more important relationships in the life of your dog is the relationship between you and the breeder.

Talk to your prospective Siberian Husky breeders and see what their feelings are about offering you support and advice after the sale is over. If the breeder you are talking to does not like to offer post sale advice or does not seem to keen on the concept of being involved in your dog's life after the sale is over then deal with a different breeder.

Any reputable breeder wants to give your dog the best chance at good health and the way they help with that is to make sure all new owners leave with care and feeding instructions with their new dog. They will also make sure that you get a sample of your dog's food so that you know what to feed it. If you are talking to a breeder that does not offer those services then you are not talking to a very good breeder.

It is not unusual for insurance companies to offer new owners free pet insurance for six weeks after the sale is complete. This is usually offered only through a very reputable Siberian Husky breeder. The insurance company hopes you like the insurance enough to keep it and pay for it after the trial period. If your breeder does not offer free pet insurance then that may be a sign that you want to move on to a new breeder.

Choosing a Siberian Husky breeder is extremely important and a decision you will be living with for many years to come. So take your time and do your research and make sure you weed out the fake breeders so that you do not make the mistake of getting your new pet from someone who has no idea how to properly breed and raise these beautiful animals. A good breeder can make all the difference so take your time and make the absolute right choice.

About the Author

Andrew Preston not only donates to many animal rights groups but also raises money by organizing charity events.
