Pet Rescues

One of the great things about the Orange County Pet Expo are all the pet rescues that participate at the event.  If you’re looking to rescue a cat or dog you’ll get a chance to see hundreds of adoptable animals at the OC Pet Expo.

Entertainment and Attractions

We try to catch most of the events out there, but there’s a lot going on and we can only do so much in one day.  As I mentioned there are the animal adoptions.  We also enjoy many of the other days events including:

• Splash Dogs – dogs jump for distance into a pool of water.
• K9 Demo – watch the police dog demo
• Agility Course – watch the dogs run through the agility course.
• Product Expo – check out the latest and greatest pet products and get some great deals.
• Other Animals – from dogs to cats to alpaca, birds, and reptiles.  Most animals you can have as pets are here at the OC Pet Expo

I even read that reknowned dog training expert Victoria Stillwell will be at this years Orange County Pet Expo.  I’m sure she’d have a lot of great hints on dog and puppy training.  However, I have yet to confirm this on the Pet Expo website.

The last couple years we’ve helped out at the Guide Dogs of America booth.  I’m not sure if we’ll be at their booth this year, but even if we’re not we’ll definitely join in at the fun and excitement of the Orange County Pet Expo.

MMdogtraining101 presents Walking Your Dog the Proper Way posted at Free Dog Training Tutorials and How To Train Your Dog.  Some great information on walking your dog.  I agree that many people are not in control of their dog on walks.  One reason I don’t like the flexi-leash for walks is exactly for this reason…it’s difficult to control your dog

Kittie Austin presents How To Stop Dog From Barking posted at The Dog Training Manual, saying, “Information that you need to know to minimize your dog barking.”  This is a very short post, but one that I agree with: “You need to identify why your dog is barking”  Take a look at this blog for more on Puppies Barking.

Positively Present presents positively present: it’s a bella life posted at positively present.  I agree with the author on this one…if your not a dog person you might think she’s crazy.  However, I am a dog person and I love Bella’s lessons on life.

Jake presents How to Use a Leash for Dog Training posted at Dog Training Pet.  I agree that a leash is important in dog training.  However, one point mentioned in this article I do not agree with.  Maybe I just misread, but it reads: “…you should try to keep the leash tight…”  I’ve always been taught to keep a loose leash when walking your dog.  However, perhaps the writer means that you should keep a tight grip on the leash.

Cheryl Shine presents I Want A Dog, Now What? posted at TheDoggieBlog.  Yes!  Some great questions you should ask yourself before getting a dog.  One of those questions “Can You Afford A Dog” leads us directly to our next article:

Darwin presents how much is that puppy? The most detailed dog cost analysis you’ve ever seen posted at Darwin’s Finance, saying, “Would you be surprised if I told you that puppy will cost you close to $100,000 over its lifetime? Well, don’t be. This detailed analysis evaluates both the lifetime cost and Net Present Cost of that puppy – too many people naively buy a puppy without truly understanding the costs involved.”  Yikes a puppy can definitely cost you a pretty penny and this is a detailed analysis of expenses you might incur.  Keep in mind these costs before you decide to get a puppy.

Surviving Dog Ownership posted at Be A Survivor.  This month sure seems like it’s all about whether or not one should get a dog and Surviving Dog ownership starts off with questioning if you should even get a dog.

Jorge Guzman presents How to not feel bad about once being a bad dog owner posted at packs and paws.  It sounds like the dog owner in this article has learned a lot since getting his first dog.  It’s definitely a good idea to learn as much about dogs and training before you pick up your first dog.  The blogs in this article are a great place to start.

Dog Grooming

ynohtna presents How to Groom a Dog | eHow.com posted at How to Groom a Dog.  Learning to groom your own dog will definitely save you money in this slow economy.  If you have two large dogs like me it can definitely take you some time to give them a bath.

How to Express Your Dog’s Anal Gland from the Outside | eHow.com posted at FaithAllen, saying, “This sounds like a weird topic, but it is so important for dog owners to understand this for the health of their pet. Just how how to express your dog’s anal gland from outside.”  This one was very interesting.  I always wanted to know how to express the anal gland.  However, lucky for me I haven’t had any issues with my dogs and their anal glands.

Dog Products

Condo Blues presents Condo Blues: Stylish DIY Dog Toy Storage posted at Condo Blues, saying, “A dog needs easy access to their toys and mine is no exception. But strewing them all over the living room was not a good solution for me so I came up with something both of us can live with.”  Yep, it’s always a good idea to have something to corral those toys and Goodwill is just as a good place as any to find the perfect, inexpensive dog toy storage bin.

John presents Dog Glucosamine – FREE Trial posted at Dog Glucosamine – FREE Trial.  My brother and sister and law use dog glucosamine for their dog.  However, I’m not so sure about this free offer.  If someone tries it please let me know if it’s legit.

Eco Dog

John Phillips presents Uno, Westminster Kennel Club, and Animal Employment Protection Act posted at The Word, saying, “Are you aware of the Animal Employment Protection Act?”

Marina presents Loving Standard Poodles posted at Dogs Info Planet.  I’ve seen some standard poodles as guide dogs.  They are very intelligent.

J.W. presents White House Pets: a Cow For Every President and Some Cake For Every Dog posted at The Collective Picture, saying, “Photographs of various White House pets.”  These are some great images of animals in the white house.

Katelyn Thomas presents Lyme Disease in Maryland posted at Baltimore Dogs Examiner.  I use frontline to keep fleas and ticks at bay and lucky for us we don’t much of a tick problem in our area.

Jeffrey F presents Pet Insurance – Do I need it? | Who Moved My Bone? posted at Who Moved My Bone.com.  I’m on the verge of getting pet insurance for my dogs and I’m contemplating downloading the e-book on this site for $9.95.

Miscellaneous Dog

Joe Tichio presents Inspirational Dog Quotes posted at Inspirational Quotes Blog, saying, “A collection of inspirational quotes about dogs.”  These are some great dog quotes and I’ve already bookmarked the page for future reference.

Reba Haas presents The 1st Off-leash Dog Park in Renton is Ready! posted at Team Reba Real Estate, saying, “A great new 5-acre offleash dog park is now located in Renton, WA!”  If you live in Renton, WA go to this page for a detailed map to the dog park.

Patti Lecron presents ONOMATOPOEIA FOR DOGGIE by P.B. Lecron posted at A French Education.  Hmmm…I didn’t know dogs commonly entered restaurants in France.  I thought that priveledge was reserved for assistance/service/guide dogs.

I was browsing my RSS reader the other day and came across an article about the Ten Ways To Have A Happy Healthy Pet.  As I was going through the list I was making mental check marks to be sure that I followed all ten ways discussed in the article and how I was making sure my two dogs were happy and healthy.

As I made my mental checklist I decided this would be a great article to first of all share with my readers and second let my readers know how I go about following the ways to a happy healthy pet.

3 out of 10 Ways To A Happy Healthy Pet

1. Give Your Pet Love And Attention For It’s Lifetime – check off point number 1.  While I haven’t had my dogs for their lifetime this is something I have no problem giving.  There may come times in my life when I can’t give my pets as much attention as I’d like because of a little thing called work and making money.  However, I make sure during long work days my mother, brother, sister, or girlfriend help out by giving my two dogs extra attention.  We are just now getting our Lab involved in Therapy work and my Aussie mix may have a future in agility.
2. Take Your Pet For Regular Checkups – First of all I’m constantly checking my dogs ears, paws, skin, etc. to make sure there are no irritations or infections.  I’ve been getting regular vaccinations and yearly checkups I recently read that it might be a good idea to take your dog in every 6 months.  The reason being that dogs each much faster than humans (approximately 7 years for every 1 human year).  So that means if you take Fido in for a yearly checkup in dog years your taking him in every 7 years.
3. Exercise Your Pet and Watch It’s Weight – I like to take my dogs out for a run.  However, one likes to run while the other likes to slowly walk while smelling the roses.  You can probably guess which one has a weight problem and which does not.  My Labrador Retriever loves to eat, but hates to run.  I usually just take him on longer walks.  I control the amount of food and treats he takes him and keep a close eye on his weight.  After all an overweight dog can lead to other health problems.

Unlike the Stairway to Cat Heaven the one you can buy at Target was purchased in pieces.  Each square was sold separately and each square could have a different play thing like a scratch post, a dangling toy, a hammock, or a little cubby hole.

I’ll take some pictures when I purchase and build my mom’s cat playground.

So, not too long ago we went to a cat comedy acrobat show at the University of California, Irvine campus called the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater.  The show was pretty cool and didn’t just star cats, but other animals as well.  However, after the show it got me wondering can you train a cat?  In particular I was thinking can you train a cat to do tricks?

Can You Train A Cat To Do Tricks?

If you’ve been to this show then you’ll realize that apparently you can teach a cat to do tricks.  However, I don’t think it’s an easy task.  My mother was quite inspired after the show and even went as far as to purchase the cat training DVD as we were walking out of the theater.

My mother has three cats and I bet you’re thinking she mus have a regular circus in her house now.  Quite the contrary…I think after watching the DVD and working with her favorite cat “Ninja” she found it much more difficult then she initially realized.

Unfortunately I have not had the chance to watch this Cat Training DVD, but during the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater I remember the star, Greg Popovich mention that you can train a cat to do something they already enjoy doing.  Once you find what your cat enjoys you reinforce the behavior and teach them to do it on command.  So, basically you can’t teach a cat something new, but instead just teach the cat to do something he already knows. I’m not an animal behaviorist or a cat trainer so I don’t really know the truth behind any of this.

After hearing this I realized that my mother actually was successful in training her cat.  She taught him to high five with his head…something the cat already enjoyed doing.  Other things I’ve seen cats enjoy that are unusual are sitting on top of a dog,  jumping into someone arms, and rolling onto their back.  If you could teach your cat to do these things on command I would consider it a trick.

Therefore I can conclude that you can train a cat?  and furthermore you can train a cat to do tricks!
