Photographer Theron Humphrey, together with Purina One, spent a year documenting happily adopted dogs and cats with their new families across the United States. The ‘Why We Rescue’ project aims at changing people’s perception of shelter pets, which the mainstream media usually portrays as having significant health and behaviour problems. “It might surprise you to learn that roughly three out of four people acquiring a new pet aren’t considering adoption from a shelter,” points out the photographer.

The series of story-telling photographs were set to shake off these stereotypes and highlight what it really means to rescue a dog or a cat from their unfortunate destiny in a shelter. The introduction of a shelter pet to a loving family, where the pet often becomes the faithful companion and heart of the home, can beautifully transform the lives of all involved.

Need a Best Friend? It’s National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month

Have you been thinking about adopting a dog? October is the ideal time because it’s Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month.

Shelters nationwide are hosting events to support Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month. The ASPCA’s website lists adoption events taking place at local shelters

More than 2.7 million healthy, adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized every year in shelters across the U.S., according to the Humane Society. This is one animal every 11 seconds. Saving a dog from death creates a lifelong bond between the pet and owner. The benefits to both are tremendous. However, it takes careful consideration to know which dog to adopt, and if you are meant to be a pet owner. It’s not a decision to make lightly.

“One of the biggest benefits to adopting a shelter dog is to help reduce the unwanted pet population and prevent more dogs from being euthanized. Of course there are other advantages, but it is really heartwarming to know you have saved life and taken a dog from a probably poor shelter environment and given it a life in a home,” said Jonathan P. Klein, dog trainer and behavior consultant who is designing a training program for Pets for Vets, a national charity pairing rescue dogs with returning veterans for aid with re-entry and recovery from PTSD and other emotional issues.

Lori Morton-Feazell, director of animal care, education and compliance at Petco Animal Supplies, Inc., said, “When an animal is adopted from a shelter, that opens a space for another animal and helps to reduce euthanasia in your community. Shelter dogs need you to begin their second chance.”

It’s important to know that shelter dogs are not flawed or second-hand choices. “Not all animals are turned into shelters for behavior issues. Sometimes people move, or can no longer care for their pet and must give it up for adoption,” Morton-Feazell said.

Figuring out which dog to adopt is a big step. There are evaluations procedures to figure out which dog is best for an individual or a family. These test the dog’s temperament, such as whether they get along well with other pets and children, Klein said.

Older dogs in particular make excellent pets because they often have fewer emotional issues than younger dogs and it’s easier to integrate the pet into a new home. Whether a dog is considered older or younger depends on the breed. Smaller dogs mature faster than larger dogs, so a toy breed is often considered mature at 20 months, while a giant breed such as a Great Dane isn’t considered mature until it is 2-1/2 years old, Klein said.

“Many people don't want to deal with all the young puppy issues so the big benefits of an older dog is that it doesn’t usually need to be housebroken, and typically doesn’t chew, and is less rambunctious than a puppy. So for a family or person that wants a typically less active dog, an older dog might be just the fit they are looking for,” Klein said.

Morton-Feazell said, “I would suggest researching the breeds that you are interested in adopting. Some of the best dogs are mixed breed dogs as they often have benefits of both breeds. Make sure to ask yourself certain questions like: Is your family active, do you have a large backyard, and do you want an active dog or a lap dog? Each breed has certain traits. For example, an Australian Shepherd is a herding dog, a Jack Russell Terrier has high energy and needs to take long walks, etc. Make sure to research specific breeds by searching for articles on the Internet or reading books.”

Before someone adopts a dog, there are several things to consider, according to Morton-Feazell:

• Make sure you have the time to spend with a dog and to provide walks.
• Determine what type of household you have, active, quiet, with or without kids.
• Find out as much as possible about a dog, including medical records and, if the dog was owned, what the last owner said about the dog.
• Does the dog walk on a leash and is it housebroken. If not, are you prepared to train it.
• Make sure you can afford to care for a dog including food, veterinarian care, toys, bed, etc. Choose a dog that is right for you and your family.
• If you go on vacation will you have a plan in place for your dog.
• Take your time to find the dog that is right for you and your family.

It’s important to pick a good shelter when adopting a dog. Talking to local vets and trainers and rescue groups is a good place to start. There are also many websites, such as Petfinder, that offer directories of adoptable shelter dogs.
Morton-Feazell said, “Adopting is the greatest gift that you can give to a shelter animal. As communities we need to support our shelters and adoption animals so they can have forever homes.”

They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. Just like best friends, people tend to do daily activities together with their dogs, such as jogging, strolling in the park, and even eating the same meal with them. Little do pet owners know, the some foods that they eat can actually be harmful to the health of their canine companion. Likewise, some of the foods people eat can be harmful to cats as well. Here is a list of the most common “people foods” that should not be fed to pet dogs or cats.

Chocolate and Cocoa. Chocolate, while delicious to people, can be deadly to cats and dogs. The culprit in chocolate is the compound theobromine. Dark chocolate generally has higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate, and unsweetened chocolate is higher still. An alternative to chocolate that is safe for cats and dogs is carob. Some pet food companies have created treats that contain carob, which has a flavor similar to chocolate.

Caffeine. Coffee, tea, colas and other beverages that contain caffeine can increase a cat or dog’s breathing and heart rate and can even be fatal.

Xylitol. Pet owners may be unwittingly giving their dogs this ingredient when they feed them candy, gum, toothpaste or baked goods. Such foods may be sweetened with xylitol, which can cause an increase in the dog’s insulin, leading to a drastic drop in the dog’s blood sugar. Vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination are initial symptoms but eventually, the dog may have seizures and within just a few days, liver failure may occur.

Milk and other dairy. In the hot weather of the Philippines, people may be tempted to share their ice cream with their dogs or cats. However most adult pets are lactose intolerants, so milk and other dairy-based products can cause digestive upset and diarrhea.

Alcohol. Irresponsible dog owners think it is funny to see a dog intoxicated. But alcohol affects dogs and cats in the same way it affects their owners, except with more severity and at much smaller doses. It only takes 2 teaspoons of whisky to cause a coma in a 5 pound cat. One more teaspoon could be fatal. Be a responsible, humane pet owner and keep your pets away from alcohol.

Fatty and Raw or Undercooked Meat. Like humans, dogs and cats can become obese with a steady diet of fatty food. Moreover, dogs and cats can suffer pancreatitis, a painful swelling of the pancreas. Plus raw meat can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to people and pets. Feeding your pet bones might cause choking or injury to a pet’s digestive tract should the bone splinter.

Garlic and Onions. While these add flavor to every dish, garlic and onions in any form can cause various problems for a dog. Onions if eaten in sufficient quantities – regardless of whether it is fresh, dried, powdered or cooked –can result in anemia by causing blood cells to break down. Even in smaller quantities, garlic and onions cause gastrointestinal irritation. Since most Filipinos cook their food with these ingredients, it is important to avoid feeding table scraps and leftovers to dogs and cats.

Grapes and Raisins. Even though cats and dogs may enjoy them, grapes and raisins should not be fed to pets. It is not understood exactly how, but grapes and raisins cause potentially life threatening illness in cats and dogs, kidney failure.

There are many other foods that are safe for humans but that may not be ideal for a pet’s consumption. The Pet Food Institute (PFI), the U.S. trade association for the makers of cat and dog food, strongly advises Filipino dog lovers against feeding table scraps and other foods that people eat to dogs and cats.

“By feeding table scraps and leftovers, pet owners take a chance on their pet’s health and quality of life,” says Kurt Gallagher, Director, Communications and Export Development, Pet Food Institute. “Table scraps and leftovers deprive pets of a nutritionally-balanced diet and may endanger a pet’s health.”

Complete and balanced commercial pet food is widely available in the Philippine market, and most veterinarians agree that this is the safer option to homemade pet food or table scraps. Pet owners may think they are saving money by feeding their dog or cat leftovers, but the risk of losing a beloved pet from disease or poisoning from feeding inappropriate food is much too high a price to pay.

Pet owners today have a tremendous choice of products, including canned, dry and semi-moist to meet a wide variety of nutritional needs at competitive price points. With decades of scientific research behind every commercially produced pet food product made in the United States, pet owners can be assured of providing the proper nutrition for their pets.

There are a growing number of pet owners in the Philippines as indicated by a rising trend in pet events and pet-friendly establishments. Recent market indicators from Euromonitor also show a steady increase in consumption of pet food in the country from 2005 to 2010, demonstrating that pet owners are now opting for commercial pet food brands rather than home-made food or table scraps for their pets.

With a growing consciousness on responsible pet ownership, due in part to various campaigns by the government and pet welfare advocacy groups, Filipino pet owners are paying greater attention to the proper care of their furry household companions, most importantly, pet nutrition.

Feeding pets the right food is a key component in ensuring pet health and wellness. The Pet Food Institute (PFI), the U.S. trade association for the makers of cat and dog food, encourages Filipino pet owners to supervise their pets’ diet carefully and seek professional advice from veterinarians regarding the overall care of their cats and dogs.

“Veterinarians and animal nutritionists have determined that table scraps are not balanced meals for household pets,” said Duane Ekedahl, president of the Pet Food Institute.“When pet owners mix leftovers into a balanced diet, they can inadvertently add extra calories, throw off the nutritional balance of the diet, and can even introduce foods that are detrimental to the pet's health.”

Ekedahl explained that many of the foods people eat are harmful to pets and can even be deadly, such as chocolate, onion, caffeine and alcohol. Even if a type of human food does not contain a harmful ingredient, it may contain too much fat, salt or spices that can upset a pet’s stomach. While people enjoy variety in their diet, cats and dogs actually do better on a consistent diet. Switching foods quickly can cause messy, digestive issues for pets.

Pet nutritional needs are different from the needs of people, so pets should be fed the appropriate amount and type of food, not leftovers of food for people. It is also important to feed products to the type of pet they were designed for (i.e. cat food only to cats and dog food only to dogs) because cats and dogs have different nutritional needs as well.

When buying their pet's basic diet, pet owners should look for products marked “complete and balanced” or similarly labeled, as they are designed to provide all the nutrition a pet needs. It is important to use products as they are intended or instructed on the label such as food for special use or

- more - supplemental feeding. Make certain that the pet has plenty of water to drink and do not overfeed. If for any reason a pet owner feels that their pet is not doing well on a particular diet, he or she may want to seek help from a veterinarian or change to another product.

“Good nourishment is important, and with today's wide assortment of commercial pet foods fully formulated for all stages of pet growth, it is easy to find well-balanced meals for pets,” adds Ekedahl.

Plot Summary:

Marley & Me is an adaptation of John Grogan's bestselling memoir about an incorrigible Labrador retriever. Marley is the yellow lab adopted by Grogan, a columnist, and his wife. Their idea was to give them a taste of parenthood, but the dog proved to be a hyperactive handful. He wreaks havoc, gets kicked out of obedience school and gets even worse when the children begin to arrive, yet becomes an indispensable part of the family.

Film Review

I must admit I enjoy going into movies not knowing a whole lot about them, although it rarely happens that way. However, I was in for quite a surprise when I attended a showing of Marley & Me. I knew the story was based on a book (and I assumed -- OK, cute dog, PG-rating, light-hearted title... must be a kids' book), and that it had to do with an unruly dog, but I didn't really know what the grand story was about. So, I had assumed it was a light, family film all about life with a dog; I had no idea it wasn't really about that.

Marley & Me is fashioned perfectly for the dog lover. If you've ever owned a dog -- past or present -- this movie was made for you. But it, surprisingly, is also just as much about married life and adult life. The movie opens with a shot of Owen Wilson's John Grogan (who incidentally is also the author of the successful book the movie is based after, "Marley & Me"), running after a grown up Marley with his voice over stating that the story began when he and his wife, Jennifer, got married. It's an appropriate way to bridge the two themes in about 15 seconds, as the meat of the story is about a married couple who start a family by adopting a dog, before starting a family raising children. While chunks of the film are about John and his relationship with Marley, probably more of it centers on the reality checks of growing up -- not reaching the goals you imagined your life to achieve, and finding that life seldom goes the way we planned. As Marley, who the two often refer to as the World's Worst Dog, ages and grows, so do John and Jennifer, and it's not always pretty. Once the couple start having children (which gets off to a surprisingly dramatic start), we see their relationship realistically change, and their reactions to how most things change, and some things don't -- and the pain of watching others find success in areas they had dreamed to as well.

Because Marley & Me stresses so much on the married couple's personal life, the subject matter glides towards more adult content than many would expect in a PG-rated film about life with an unruly dog. They openly discuss the sexual part of having children, and three encounters between the couple (well, at least they're married in this story), are seen in part. Between these moments and some of the film's dialog, I couldn't help but feel awkward for the parents that might take their children to see this film. Not only is it not a light-hearted family romp with a misbehaving but lovable dog, but it's a thematically heavy "dramedy" that may be heavier on the drama than the comedy. As a married guy myself, I can appreciate the themes that this movie [mostly] tastefully handles, but what makes me uncomfortable about said subject matter is that it's liable to surprise parents (and their children) who were thinking this would be a pretty safe one to take them to.

So what kind of content do [some of] you think I'm being a little uptight about? First of all, there is some language in the film -- not the worst I've heard in PG films (the 80's got away with considerably worse), but John and Jennifer also talk about having a child while John and his boss and also his longtime friend talk pretty openly about him and his wife having sex while trying to start a family (there are more details in the content summaries after this review). Along with that, we see Marley vigorously humping someone's leg or, in one instance, a couch. We see John and Jennifer passionately making out on the bed (with intentions to have sex) before they're interrupted by Marley (to which they shove a pillow in his face and the scene ends there). Later, the pair find themselves away from home in a bed & breakfast and cuddle under the covers on a squeaky bed. They talk about the possibility of trying for a baby and as the camera pans away, we hear the rhythmic squeaking of the bed. And finally, on John's birthday, Jennifer takes all of her clothes off in front of him and jumps into their pool (we see a very brief glance of part of the side of her breasts as we see her disrobe from behind) and then John disrobes and joins her in the pool. They start passionately kissing but the scene ends there. There's also a brief scene implying violence as the story shows how bad the neighborhood they live in is. We find that their neighbor has been stabbed and we quickly see some blood on her shirt on her side (it's implied that she ends up being okay, however). While none of the sexual content is meant to be vulgar, it still seemed like quite a bit for a film that's being marketed for families (my wife was also surprised).

When it comes to the acting side of Marley & Me, Owen Wilson turns in possibly his strongest performance to date. I've often enjoyed him in comedies (especially Shanghai Noon and his small role in Night At The Museum), so this was the first time I've really gotten a chance to see him stretch his acting abilities (he was more dramatic in Behind Enemy Lines, but Marley & Me is taken much more seriously). Jennifer Aniston does a pretty good job as Jennifer Grogan as well. She offers a well-rounded performance through the maturation of their relationship. Alan Arkin is ultra comfortable in the shoes of John's boss, and Eric Dane does well as John's more successful traveling reporter colleague.

It's kind of unfortunate that Marley & Me isn't the family film that the studios want you to think it will be, however, it's a great look into married life and the surprises that come with growing up and starting a family. The movie encourages working through problems in marriage and staying true to your spouse and family, which is a nice moral theme to see coming out of Hollywood. And as the film likens the chaos of raising a dog to the chaos of life, Marley & Me works better as an adult drama - with a little humor thrown in - than a family comedy. If you do decide to see this one, you better bring the tissues.

Andi and Bruce go outside the rules to try and keep their dog, Friday. In the process they add more pets and make some good friendships. Although the group gets into trouble, they want what is best for everyone.

Some children do not get the best of parents whether they are birth parents, adoptive parents or foster parents. This movie does not show the best side of the foster system. But, Andi and Bruce try to overcome their situation so they can stay together. They may not always follow the rules but in their hearts they are trying to do something good not only for themselves but for the dogs that have become family to them.

"Hotel for Dogs" is a heartwarming comedy that will have you laughing out loud at times. Then at other times you may want to get the Kleenex. This is a cute lovable movie for the pet lover and the entire family.

Last week of February 25, I've got the chance to attend the most exciting events for our loving and adorable bestfriends. It was held at SMX Convention Center in Mall of Asia, which was attended different Asian dog-lovers, dog owners and breeders, from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and also our proud breeders and owners from Philippines.

Joining this kind of prestigious event needs extensive preparation - for the dog owners per se and also for the generous host of the event, The Philippine Canine Club, Inc. (PCCI). The event has showcase the different adorable breeds of dogs, their talents, agility, disciplines, very well-trained.. no wonder they are considered as our most-prized possession.

Dog Food Recipes: Auggie’s Wolfdown

Dog Food Recipe Ingredients:

16-qt stew pot with cover enough olive oil to coat bottom of pot
5-6 lbs. ground beef
2 50-oz cans chicken broth
4 cups water
1 3-lb bag frozen corn
1 3-lb bag brown rice
Dog Food Recipe Directions:

Brown ground beef in olive oil. When beef is cooked, add broth, water, and
corn. (Note that broth and water amount to just over a gallon of liquid; you can
also just dump in a gallon jug of water and add a bunch of bouillon cubes.)
Bring to a boil. Add brown rice, stir well, cover, and bring to a boil again.
Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Remove from heat and let
cool overnight. Makes approximately 40-45 cups of food. Divide the yield into
generous 2-cup portions and freeze most of it (it freezes well). Always have
some thawed in the fridge and microwave it for a minute or so to get it to room
temperature. Suggested serving is as follows:

Breakfast

1 portion (2 cups) Auggie’s Wolfdown
1 cup high-quality all-natural kibble

Dinner

1 portion (2 cups) Auggie’s Wolfdown
1 cup fresh shredded veggies
2-3 times a week: a little nonfat plain yogurt and an egg yolk

Dog Food Recipe Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered dry milk
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. brown sugar or honey
6 tbs. meat or bacon drippings, cold right from refrigerator, not melted
or soft!
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 cup Ice water
Dog Food Recipe Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour, dry milk,
garlic powder and sugar. Cut in meat drippings until mixture resembles corn
meal. Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Using your
fingers, pat out dough onto cook sheet to 1/2" thick. Cut dough into squares
appropriate for your dog size. Prick each cookie with fork. Bake 25-30 minutes.
Remove from tray and cool on rack. Store in airtight container.
