everyone who enters my apt just ooohs and aaah over this aquarium. It comes with everything--except the fish of course :) But it will arrive with gem like glass pieces for gravel and an artifical plant.
It holds 3.7 liters of water so its plenty room for my beta to swim around. I hate when people put betas in small containers ---very cruel.

Comet
Family: Cyprinidae

The Comet is an omnivourus goldfish species.It is very docile and is often fed vegetable/growth/coulor mixtures.Comets can grow to be up to 30 inches long!The Comet is very daring and active, so it must be at least be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium.Comets can live up to 37 years!It's colors are orange, sarasa(red on white), black on orange, and red cap.Comets have a slim, long body and an exeptionally long, forked tail fin.
The Comet Goldfish, also called the Comet-tail Goldfish, are a 'reddish orange' colored goldfish that are inexpensive and readily available. This fish was the first variety of the single-tail goldfish to be developed with a long caudal (tail) fin. It was developed in the United States from the Common Goldfish in the early 19th century, presumably by Hugo Mullert of Philadelphia who then introduced them in quantity into the market. Though they are a bit smaller goldfish than the Common Goldfish, they are every bit as durable and can be kept in either an aquarium or in an outdoor pond.

These fish can be quite personable and are delightful to watch. One of the hardiest of the gold fish varieties, the Comet Goldfish are recommended for beginners. They are an easy fish to keep as they are not picky and will readily eat what is offered. These are some of the most graceful of the elongated goldfish, emphasized by their long tail. They are active, rapid swimmers and will sometimes tend to leap out of the water, so having a lid on an aquarium is good idea. They are also very social and thrive well in a community.

The Comet Goldfish is very similar to, and sometimes confused with, the Common Goldfish. The Comet Goldfish is a further development of the Common Goldfish. Both these fish have an almost identical body shape but the fins on the Comet are much longer, especially the caudal (tail) fin, and it is more deeply forked. Also, the Comet is generally a more reddish orange while the Common Goldfish is more orangish. The adult size of the Comet Goldfish is smaller too. On both these fish the caudal (tail) fin is held fully erect.

Comet Goldfish, often called the Pond Comet, are primarily a reddish orange color, but they are also available in yellow, orange, white, and red. There is also a bi-color red/white combination and occasionally they are available with nacreous (pearly) scales, giving them a variegated color.

Other types of Comet include the Sarasa Comet. This variety has long flowing fins and is characterized by a red-and-white coloration that holds a resemblance to a koi color pattern called 'Kohaku'. The Tancho Single-tail Comet is a silver colored variety with a red patch on its head.

Black Moor

Rather than having the long slender body of the Common Goldfish or the Shubunkins, The Black Moor Goldfish is one of the more rounded or egg-shaped fancy gold fish. The rounded body shape of this beautiful goldfish is enhanced by large bulbous eyes protruding out on the sides of its head, metallic scales that give it a deep velvety black color, and long flowing finnage. Their hardiness and ability to live in cold temperatures makes them ideal pets.They are very popular gold fish and are found in collectors tanks throughout the world.

The Black Moor is basically a black version of the Telescope Goldfish though its eyes don't protrude quite as far. These eyes have given rise to some descriptive names for this fish, such as the Dragon Eye Goldfish and Black Peony Goldfish. Juveniles are a dark bronze and without the protruding eyes, but as they mature they become black and their eyes begin to telescope. Most Black Moors stay black but their color can change with age, ranging from gray to black, or they can revert to a metallic orange when kept in warmer water. Though they once were available with a beautiful veil-tail, the specimens available today will have either a broad tail, ribbon tail, or butterfly tail.

Black Moor Goldfish along with two other egg-shaped goldfish, the Fantail Goldfish and the Ryukin Goldfish, are recommended for the beginner, but unlike the Fantail and the Ryukin, the Black Moor must not be kept with highly competitive tank mates. These three varieties of goldfish along with the Common Goldfish, Comet Goldfish, the Shubunkin, are all considered good beginner goldfish. This is because they are hardy and can tolerate temperatures a few degrees above freezing, as long as the cooling drops only a few degrees a day.

For most of these goldfish, their hardiness and ability to live at colder temperatures makes them ideal for outdoor ponds as well. The Black Moor is the only possible exception to this, not because it lacks hardiness but because of its telescopic eyes. Its eyes cause it to have poor vision so it is not a good competitor for food, and they are subject to injury and infection. None of these hardy fish are really good companions for the Black Moor because they are all too competitive during feeding time.

Ryukin
Carassius auratus auratus

The Ryukin Goldfish are considered a Japanese version of the Fantail Goldfish. They were developed in from the common Fantail Goldfish and like their Fantail counterpart, they are one of the more rounded or egg-shaped fancy gold fish. The Ryukin Goldfish differs from the Fantail in that they have an extremely high back, often described as a dorsal hump, that starts in the neck region giving them a more pointed appearance to the head, and they have a wider caudal fin than the Fantail. Like all the goldfish with this rounded body they can be susceptible to swim bladder problems.

The beautiful Ryukin goldfish is available in red, red and white, tri-color, calico, white, and chocolate. The distinguishing feature common to both the Ryukin Goldfish and the Fantail Goldfish are their split or double caudal (tail) fin. A long-tailed version of this fish has also been developed and is called the Fringe-tail or Ribbon-tail Ryukin.

Fantail

The Fantail is an omnivourus goldfish species.It is very docile and is often fed vegetable/growth/coulor/protein mixtures.Fantails can grow to be up to 8 inches long, and 2 inches deep!Fantails have large tails, so some care is required to prevent them from ripping or tearing, but other than that, the Fantail is a great beginners level fish.Fantails can live up to be 20 years old!It's colors are orange, black on orange, and white and orange.Fantails have a round body with a split tail fin 1/2 as long as it's body.

Rather than having the long slender body of the Common Goldfish or the Shubunkins, the Fantail Goldfish is one of the more rounded or egg-shaped fancy gold fish. These fish are bred for showing and its main feature, the split tail fin is medium in length and slightly forked. To be a good show specimen, the tail fin needs to be completely split with the two lobes being much closer together on top than on the bottom, making it look triangular when viewed from the back. Good show specimens also have a double anal fin with complete separation. Those whose tail fins are not completely split won't win any prizes, but still make great pets.

Fantail Goldfish are available in several scale types or color. The hardiest and most competitive show type is metallic, a solid reddish orange. Other scale types include nacreous which is speckled, and matt which is a whitish color. The Ryukin Goldfish is a Japanese version of the Fantail, with a highly curved back and a wider caudal fin than the Fantail Goldfish.

Lionhead
Family: Cyprinidae

The Lionhead Goldfish is by far the most popular and well known of the dorsal less goldfish. Rather than having the long slender body of the Common Goldfish or the Shubunkins, the Lionhead Goldfish is one of the more rounded or egg-shaped fancy gold fish. They have a double caudal (tail) fin and a double anal fin. This goldfish variety is very similar to the Ranchu Goldfish that was highly developed Japan.The Lionhead can be distinguished by a less curved countour shape to its back. Also, its caudal fin is quite similar to that of the Fantail Goldfish, while the Ranchu has a tail fin that splays out to the sides, often being almost horizontal.

The distinctive raspberry or lion's mane appearance of this fish have led to its common name 'Lionhead' Goldfish. The amount of head growth differs for each fish. For some the broad head, except for its eyes, mouth and nostrils, can become completely covered with fleshy growth (sometimes impeding their vision) while others will develop hardly any head growth at all.

These goldfish are available in a variety of colors. The solid metallic types include red, orange, chocolate, blue, and black. The nacreous types can be calico, bi-colored combinations of red and white or red and black, or tri-colored combinations in red, white, and black. There is also a red-capped variety with a bright red head and white body. Though pretty rare, there is also a long finned variety.

The Lionhead Goldfish is considered a rather delicate fish and is not recommended for beginners. Its swimming ability is cumbersome because of its rounded body which is further diminished by the lack of a stabilizing dorsal fin, a trait that is also seen in the Water-Bubble Eye Goldfish and the Celestial Eye Goldfish. Many of the elongated goldfish varieties like the Common Goldfish, Comet Goldfish, the Shubunkin, are not really good companions for the Lionhead Goldfish because they are fast swimmers and too competitive during feeding time. Better tank mates would be the similarly handicapped but less hardy Water-Bubble Eye Goldfish, Telescope Goldfish, and Celestial Goldfish. It won't win any races, but if kept with other slow-moving varieties the Lionhead Goldfish should get plenty to eat and do well.

Goldfish Care Basics

Common and fancy goldfish are Asian Carp, Carassius auratus. They Telescope Goldfish have been bred in the Orient for over a thousand years, and in Europe for over a hundred years to provide all of the colors and shapes available to hobbyists today.

Goldfish are a temperate fish found in cool streams, lakes, and ponds throughout Asia and part of eastern Europe, though all the Veil Tail Goldfish specimens found in the hobby today are captive bred. Goldfish can be easy to care for, however, they do require some care. Given proper care and a good, healthy environment, goldfish can sometimes live nearly 50 years!
Goldfish Equipment & Maintenance:

To keep a goldfish healthy, remember to provide them with plenty of clean, cool water.

Your goldfish's temperature should never rise above 74° Fahrenheit (about 23.5° Celsius), and ideally should remain between 65° and 68° F (18° and 20° C) so you will need a thermometer. Keeping a goldfish above 72° F (about 22.5° C) for Bubble Eye Goldfish long periods of time will result in Oxygen deprivation, which can cause nerve damage, heart damage, and can seriously hamper the immune system, making them more susceptible to many diseases, from easily treatable Ick to nearly untreatable swim bladder infections.

Keep your goldfish in a fish tank no smaller than a 10 gallon (about 38 liter), and make sure that a minimum of 6 gallons (23 liters) of the space in that fish tank is dedicated to each goldfish (each goldfish should have 6-8 gallons or more (roughly 23-30 liters or more) space in the goldfish aquarium). A 10 gallon fish tank is really only suitable for one goldfish.

This will provide sufficient space for your goldfish, so he can remain healthy, and this will allow the aquarium to help you keep healthy goldfish.

Goldfish should never be kept in a fish bowl.

Perform your weekly 10-15% water changes, so that your goldfish always has clean water and so that any waste that is not processed by the aquarium filter is removed.

Your goldfish will need a filter to keep the water from becoming toxic, and you will need to keep the filter in Ryukin Goldfish good condition. When selecting a filter, if you have fancy goldfish, make sure that the filter will not produce excessive current in your fish tank, and this will make it difficult for the fancy goldfish to swim.
Goldfish Food & Care:

Remember that your goldfish is an omnivorous (eats anything) scavenger, so provide him with a varied and high carbohydrate diet. Many goldfish foods are available on the market today, and most frozen fish foods are also appropriate, provided you do not feed meaty foods too often.

Goldfish have large appetites, but they also graze for food constantly. Don't let their 'mock hunger' and grousing around for food fool you into over feeding them. Your fish should be able to consume all the food you offer within two minutes of feeding. If there is food in the aquarium after this time has elapsed, this will contribute to poor water quality and make your goldfish more susceptible to disease.

You will only need to feed your goldfish once a day. If you feed more than once a day you will increase the waste your fish is producing and will also increase the risk of over feeding, so it becomes more important that you are performing your weekly 10-15% water changes and all necessary filter maintenance. Providing a proper diet will increase your goldfish's life expectancy and bolster their immune system.
Oranda Goldfish

Goldfish, like almost any fish, are aware that they are prey animals. In order to feel comfortable, they need to have lots of hiding places. Goldfish do not seem to be too particular about their cover, however, you do want to make sure that you do not use any sharp or rough decorations that your goldfish may get hurt on, especially if you are keeping any fancy goldfish that have impaired vision.

Like most other fish, they are more comfortable and will come out more and be more active if you can provide them with 50-75% cover - this means you should make half to three fourths of your tank space hiding places. Providing sufficient cover will reduce stress and therefore improve your goldfish's immune system, reducing chance of disease.
Goldfish Companionship:

Goldfish can, like most fish, be kept with fish with similar care requirements and temperament. However, this very quickly limits you Fantail Goldfish to other goldfish - fortunately, there are many different and interesting fancy goldfish to choose from.

When looking for a companion for your goldfish, remember to select goldfish with similar handicaps. If their disabilities are too different, it is very likely that some will out compete the others for food, and you can have a goldfish starve to death while another gets fat right before your eyes in your fish tank.
Finally:

Remember, goldfish are beautiful living creatures. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to care for their pet and provide a healthy environment. So give your goldfish space, clean, cool water, plenty of hiding places, and high-quality, high-carbohydrate foods and he should be a good companion for a long time.

Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on.

The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us.

We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time.

If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ½-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, it’s a tail-wagger.

Many an exhausted "pet parent" has experienced a young puppy barking in his crate. This is very common... your sweet little pup is in new surroundings, with new people, and may not be accustomed to being alone. "Puppy barking in crate" is often quoted as one reason why a pet owner looks so darned tired!

Puppy training takes time. Your squiggly, wiggly, bundle of canine energy needs to be taught what you expect of him. Here a few tips and suggestions to help you conquer the barking:

a. First of all, make sure puppy isn't causing a ruckus because he needs to go out for a potty break.

b. Place a clock on top of the crate. The ticking sound may remind your puppy of a heartbeat and he'll feel less lonely.

c. Place a stuffed animal in the crate - but be careful, since puppies like to chew and you wouldn't want him to ingest anything inappropriate! Better yet, place a recently worn clothing item in his crate... your smell may help to comfort him so that he'll settle down and sleep.

d. Move the crate into your bedroom. If puppy can see and smell you, he just might fall fast asleep (and let you do the same).

e. Loosely cover the crate with a blanket (make sure your pup can still get air!). This helps some puppies feel "protected" so that they calm down and sleep.

f. Exercise! Take puppy out into the backyard for some playtime before bed. Try to tire him out! It may help him sleep... if not through the entire night, then at least a little longer so that you can snooze too.

g. Take the opportunity to teach your pup the "quiet" command. Don't try this if you're feeling tired or cranky - training should be a positive experience for both of you.

Your puppy's crate is supposed to be a "safe" place for him, a quiet place he can go -- it should not be used as punishment or as his regular living space.

Dogs learn when they are rewarded for their behavior. Resist the temptation to coo, pet, or attempt to sooth a noisily yapping pup in his crate, as this can reinforce the behavior. Any type of canine can experience dog eye problems, ranging from mild conditions that generally do not affect the quality of the dog's life, to severe conditions that are medical emergencies. Brachycephalic breeds - that's dogs with "snub" noses, like the Pekingese, Pug, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, or Boxer - tend to be prone to dog eye problems because their eyes are more prominent, protruding slightly.

Below is a brief summary of several eye conditions. However, do not attempt to diagnose your dog yourself - please bring him to the vet for consultation if you notice an eye problem.

1. Glaucoma is an increase in eye pressure, and is a medical emergency because it can result in blindness and the loss of the eye. Some symptoms can include pain (the dog may rub his eye against objects, or rub it with his paw); one eye may protrude more than the other; dilated pupil (either the pupil reacts very slowly to changes in light, or one pupil is larger than the other); squinting or excessive blinking; or a bad case of "bloodshot eyes".

Consult a vet immediately if you notice any of these warning signs. Do not wait even a day - go immediately! Your dog's vision depends on immediate action.

2. Cherry eyes is a condition in which the gland located in the dog's third eyelid (normally not visible) falls out of its normal position and swells. Cherry eyes are noticeable as a red swelling in the corner of the eye. Consult with your vet to see whether surgical correction is required.

3. Inward-growing eyelashes is when small eyelashes grow on the very edge of the eyelids, irritating the cornea. You may notice your dog's eye become inflamed or even develop a discharge. Your dog may also rub or paw at it, or squint. This condition should be treated to prevent it from worsening and to improve the pet's quality of life. Untreated, it can lead to infections and possibly even blindness.

4. Tear stains are very common and do not bother the dog. This cosmetic issue is characterized by brown stains on the fur underneath the corners of each eye. Regularly wipe this area clean to prevent it from getting matted or irritated.

5. Cataracts are the "cloudiness" inside your dog's eye, which results in reduced vision. Cataracts can be inherited or they may develop over a period of time. They can't be "cured", but can be surgically removed.

On the other hand, Nuclear Sclerosis is an eye condition often mistaken for cataracts. Older dogs develop a hardening of the eye lens that results in a greyish-looking appearance. This does not affect the dog's vision.

Your vet may refer you to a veterinary ophthalmologist in more severe cases that require a specialist's opinion. Don't be afraid to questions about treatments or surgeries.

How Do You Know if Your Pet is Sick?

Prevention is the medicine. Have your pet fully vaccinated every year; supervise your pet; and provide your pet with a proper diet and adequate exercise.

Even with all of the above, your pet may still get sick. While it can be difficult to know when to call the vet, here are a few guidelines in recognizing a sick pet:

1. Diarrhea.
2. Unexplained or sudden weight loss.
3. Significant loss of appetite or increased appetite.
4. Vomiting.
5. Pawing at ears or shaking head.
6. Lumps on body.
7. Significant fur loss (not just shedding, which is normal); dull, patchy coat.
8. Persistent sneezing or coughing.
9. Abnormal discharge from the eyes or nose.
10. Stiffness or weakness in any joints; pet moves with difficulty.
11. Straining to urinate or defecate. Inability to urinate is an emergency - get your cat to the vet immediately.

Useful Pet Care Tips

1. Using metal water dishes outside in winter may be a risk, because your pet's tongue could stick to the frozen metal. In the summer medal bowls can get very hot, and burn your dog.

2. If you have a puppy that pees on your carpet. After soaking up most of the mess with paper towel, sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbontae of soda (baking soda) over the area and leave it to absorb both the traces of urine and the odor.

3. If your dog runs away from you and you finally catch up to it, no matter how angry you are at the dog, do not yell or smack it or your dog will never come to you when called for fear of being punished.

4. Do not leave your dog unattended on a choke chain. The chain could get caught and strangle the dog.

5. Do not leave your dog in the car unattended on hot days. Even with the windows open, temperatures in cars WILL reach deadly levels. It only takes 5 minutes!

6. To keep your dog busy, buy toys with little holes in them (such as a Kong), put both big and small pieces of kibble in the toy and give it to your dog. This will keep him busy for quite awhile presuming he has a few small ones that he gets out quickly. You can also wedge dog biscuits in the holes with a smear of peanut butter.

7. When your dog is teething, instead of have him chewing on couches, walls etc. Buy a few (cheap) wash clothes. Soak the wash cloth and put it ion the freezer. When fully frozen give it to the dog to chew, it will thaw out so have another one ready in the freezer. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. I have heard of small dogs getting too cold too quickly when chewing on ice.)

8. For teething puppies mix chicken or beef broth (look for low fat, low sodium brands) with 1 ½ cup of water. Pour them into ice cube trays to made broth ice cubes. They are tasty treats on hot days. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill. I have heard of small dogs getting too cold too quickly when chewing on ice.)

9. Do not leave your pet in an area with dangling phone cords, drape cords or other items that they may strangle on. Be aware of electric cords that may be chewed by the pet.

10. I have a dog who loved to dig. When I'd fill the hole and re-seed, he'd just dig it up again. One day I was watching him wander around the yard, and I noticed he took extra care not to step in his droppings. So, the next time I filled up a hole, I buried a little dung under, and left some dung on top. He avoided the freshly-seeded grass, and his droppings made excellent fertilizer. This won't work for all dogs... I also have another dog who loves to dig. This trick does not work on her, as she does not care where she steps.

Please Note: the feces of dogs or any other meat-eating animal are NOT SAFE to use as fertilizer on plants that will be eaten by people, such as veggies, fruits, or herbs. The feces can spread disease, even if it comes from a healthy dog.

11. Is your dog digging? Try putting cayenne pepper in the holes - they don't like the sensation when they go back to dig again.

12. Dog urination burns your lawn? Try giving them some tomato juice every day (either in a bowl or on their food) and it should solve the problem.

13. After soaking up the majority of urine or picking up the poop baby wipes do a great job and pick up all smells with no stains left behind.

.Summertime can be as much fun for your pet as it is for you. But pet owners need to take some precautions to keep their animal companions happy, cool and safe during the dog days of summer. Pet expert Andrea Arden offers these important hot-weather tips.

Sun protection
Many of the safety concerns we have for ourselves during the hottest months of the year also apply to our pets. Consistent use of sunscreen in order to avoid sun damage is as important for our pets as it is for us. This is especially important if your pet has short hair, white fur or pink skin. Talk to your veterinarian about choosing a sunscreen (most important to apply on ears and nose) and be sure to limit your pet's sun exposure.

Avoiding heatstroke
Limiting and supervising time outdoors during the hottest hours of the day is also important for your pets because when it's hot for you, it's probably even hotter for them. Dogs aren't as efficient at cooling down as we are, since they release most of their body heat only through the pads of their feet and by panting. Be especially careful with dogs that have short, pushed-in faces (e.g., bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers), puppies and elderly pets. Early-morning and evening hours are best for outdoor playtime, and be sure to provide plenty of water and even ice cubes. As an added precaution, you can soak a bandanna in water and let it cool in the refrigerator before putting it around your dog's neck. Avoiding toxins
If you use fertilizers or other chemicals on your lawn or garden, make sure your pet doesn't have access to these potentially toxic substances.
