HOLLAND, Mich., August 4, 2009 — U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, today announced that he will be opting into Michigan’s gubernatorial public funding program.

“Michigan’s public financing system is designed to provide matching funds to grassroots campaigns that have proven their ability to raise $100 donations from a large number of citizens across the state,” said Hoekstra. “Over these past few months, I have been honored by the broad base of support we have built for our campaign, and we are going to continue to discuss with the public their ideas on how to improve the state.”

The last successful Republican candidate for governor, John Engler, participated in the public funding program, and the decision to opt into the system is a good first indication of the strength of a candidacy.

To qualify for public funds, a candidate must raise at least $75,000 in “qualifying contributions” during the primary election. “Qualifying contributions” are defined as “a contribution of $100 or less from a Michigan resident in a calendar year.” Once a gubernatorial campaign has qualified, they will receive $2 in public funds for each $1 qualifying contribution, up to a total of $990,000 in public funds for the primary election. Public financing allows grassroots-based campaigns to level the playing field with self-funded candidates.

“Only campaigns with a broad base of support will have the ability to opt into the public funding program,” said Hoekstra for Governor Director of Operations Dave Mroz. “We are honored by the amount of grassroots support we have been receiving throughout the state that has enabled us to take this important step.”

DETROIT, July 24, 2009 — When he announced his bid for Michigan Governor in March, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, promised that during his campaign he would perform 100 different Michigan jobs in all industries. On Monday, July 27, 2009, at 10 a.m., Hoekstra will be in Detroit to launch his “100 Jobs Campaign.” His first stop will be working in the City of Detroit with Inland Pipe Rehabilitation (Inland), a national, Detroit-headquartered, leading provider of underground rehabilitation solutions.

While on the job, Hoekstra will work with an Inland crew on an underground rehabilitation project in which decaying city infrastructure pipes will be repaired with an updated pipe product that will enable water and sewage to better flow to its final destination. This rehabilitation process assists municipalities and engineering firms nationwide in building and maintaining healthier communities.

Hoekstra committed to experiencing 100 jobs to stress the importance of economic development and job creation. Additionally, it allows Hoekstra the opportunity to personally engage with Michigan residents in all different employment areas throughout the state while also hearing from a broader group of citizens.

“Right now, one of the State of Michigan’s greatest exports is our college graduates. In order to keep these important resources here, I am committed to making Michigan one of the top spots for businesses to invest, expand and create more jobs, even in economically challenging times,” Hoekstra said. “Working side-by-side with the hardworking men and women of Michigan will allow me the opportunity to hear the issues and needs of our workers and business owners. I am looking forward to listening to their views and discussing the challenges they face every day.”

Hoekstra is encouraging the public to submit jobs ideas for him to perform on his website, www.HoekstraForGovernor.com. Individuals can go online and submit a suggestion in any industry anywhere in Michigan for Hoekstra to try throughout the campaign. The public can also follow Hoekstra’s journey on his website where he will post blogs, video diary entries and photos of each job he performs.

Prior to being elected as a U.S. Congressman, Hoekstra was the Vice President of Marketing at Herman Miller, a Fortune 500 Company. He also earned his MBA from the University of Michigan.

He has represented Michigan’s Second Congressional District since 1993 and launched his gubernatorial campaign in March. He currently serves as the top Republican and former Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and is a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Labor.

Holland, Mich., May 28, 2009 — U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, today welcomed veteran political fund-raiser Shelly Carson to serve as his Senior Finance Advisor as he continues to build momentum for the Republican nomination for Governor of Michigan.

“Shelly’s outstanding reputation, proven track record, and more importantly, her true understanding about the State of Michigan, will be a tremendous asset to my campaign to be Michigan’s next governor,” Hoekstra said. “Shelly has raised the most money in recent years for a Republican campaign in Michigan and we are fortunate to have her on our team. Her skills at building and maximizing grassroots fundraising networks will be a key part of raising the resources necessary to wage our campaign to create jobs and restore Michigan’s economy.”

Ms. Carson served as Finance Director for the record-breaking fundraising efforts of the DeVos for Governor campaign in 2006. In that race, the DeVos campaign raised well over twice as much money (not including the candidate’s contributions) as the previous Republican Governors campaign, and the contributions came from over 25,000 donors (more than three times as many as had previously contributed to a Republican campaign for Governor in Michigan). More recently, Ms. Carson served as the Deputy National Finance Director for the Romney for President campaign, which included an extremely distributed, many-branched fundraising network. She has also served as National Events Coordinator for the Republican National Committee’s Team 100 program, as well as Finance Director for the successful DeMint for U.S. Senate (SC) campaign.

“Pete Hoekstra understands the greatness Michigan is capable of with the right policies and the right leadership,” Carson said. “Having worked on the DeVos and Romney campaigns, I’m excited to return to Michigan and look forward to working with the state-wide grassroots supporters to ensure the Hoekstra campaign has the resources necessary to wage a successful campaign to bring Michigan back.”

HOLLAND, Mich., May 19, 2009 — U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, today welcomed political veteran Charlie Spies as General Counsel for his campaign to become the next Governor of Michigan.

“Charlie brings a wealth of legal and strategic experience and knowledge that will serve as a tremendous asset to my campaign,” Hoekstra said. “He is a great fit for my team as we build our grassroots campaign and develop our plan to create jobs and revitalize Michigan’s economy.”

Spies, a Grand Rapids native and graduate of the University of Michigan, is Of Counsel to the national political law practice at McKenna Long & Aldridge, LLP in Washington, D.C. He has experience working with Republican Governors and Governors’ campaigns around the country, having served as General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer for the Republican Governors Association during the 2006 election cycle. Prior to that, he was Election Law Counsel for the Republican National Committee for the successful 2004 election cycle, including President George W. Bush’s re-election. Most recently, he served as Chief Financial Officer and Counsel to Gov. Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, where he developed and managed the campaign’s $105 million budget as well as systems for the campaign’s legal compliance.

“Having been born and raised in West Michigan and with my family still living in Grand Rapids, it is painful for me to watch what has happened to our state,” Spies said. “Michigan needs new leadership and I am confident Pete Hoekstra is the right man, at the right time, to lead Michigan back.”

HOLLAND, Mich., May 11, 2009 — U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra announced today the appointment of David G. Mroz, II as the Director of Operations for the Hoekstra for Governor campaign.

“I am extremely pleased to welcome David to our team,” said Rep. Hoekstra, candidate for Michigan Governor. “David brings years of national, state and local campaign experience and will be invaluable as we wage an aggressive grassroots campaign to rebuild and reinvigorate Michigan.”

Most recently, Mroz was Political Affairs Coordinator for the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) where he organized statewide political fundraising efforts and worked to enhance grassroots efforts across the state and develop a relationship with Michigan lawmakers.

Prior to that, Mroz was the Director of Field and Political Operations in Michigan for the Romney Presidential Campaign. In that position, he developed, implemented and oversaw the field and office staff working to develop a grassroots and grasstops organization in all 83 Michigan counties. His role included developing and managing relationships with elected Michigan officials as well as handling all voter contact programs throughout the state. These efforts helped deliver an almost 10 point primary victory for Romney.

In 2006, he served as the West Michigan Field Director for the Michigan Republican Party where he implemented and led grassroots efforts and was responsible for overseeing field staff and victory centers for the Republican Party throughout West Michigan.

Mroz earned a B.S. in Political Science/Pre-Law and History from Northern Michigan University. He resides in White Lake.

DETROIT, March 30, 2009 — U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra announced today that he will seek the Republican nomination for Governor of Michigan. Hoekstra announced his candidacy at Inland Pipe Rehabilitation in Detroit, a company to which he referred as “a Michigan success story and national leader in its industry.” In his opening remarks, Hoekstra stated, “Our revitalized Michigan begins with us thinking differently and acting differently.”

“We need to begin the process of rebuilding a strong Michigan: creating good jobs, promoting strong businesses and driving meaningful and measurable results,” said Hoekstra, who has represented Michigan’s Second Congressional District since 1993. He currently serves as the top Republican and former Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and is a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Labor.

“We will rebuild and reinvigorate this state, creating an environment for investment and job creation,” said Hoekstra. “We will deliver results with a transparent, effective and accountable state government. And, we will create new opportunities to not only keep our family members, friends, neighbors and our great businesses here at home in Michigan, but attract new companies and residents to our great state.”

An experienced business leader who understands the importance of innovation and job creation, Hoekstra served as vice president of marketing at Zeeland, Mich.-based Fortune 500 office furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, Inc. for 15 years prior to his election to Congress. With the recent news that Michigan’s unemployment rate increased to 12 percent in February, Hoekstra notes that the greatest challenge before him is creating job opportunities in the state.

In addition to visiting Wayne County for the announcement at Inland Pipe Rehabilitation, Hoekstra will also stop in Macomb County, speaking with students at Fraser High School; Oakland County; Ingham County, where he will officially file his paperwork at the Secretary of State’s office in Lansing; ending with an event at Herman Miller, Inc. in Ottawa County (Holland). He will be touring the state in the weeks ahead.

Hoekstra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Hope College in Holland and holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. Hoekstra has received numerous awards for his work in Congress, including repeatedly earning the U.S. Chamber of Commerce “Spirit of Enterprise” award, the “Hero of the Taxpayer” award from Americans for Tax Reform, the “Taxpayer Superhero” Award from the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, “Public Official of the Year” Award from Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, and the “Faith, Family and Freedom” and “True Blue” awards from the Family Research Council. He has also been recognized by the National Association of Manufacturers.

Hoekstra lives in Holland, Mich., with his wife, Diane, and has three children, Erin, Allison and son-in-law Mike, and Bryan.
