In 1839, James Brooke(the first white Rajah of Sarawak) referred the town as Kuching which might suggest to an old word Cochin or port, as in India or Indochina.&lt;br /&gt;In 1870s there was a river running through it known as 'Sungai Kuching' as it passed through a hill where there was a large growth of fruit trees locally known as 'Mata Kuching' /lsau/Green Longan(Dimacarpus Longan). The race are bidayuh, above 60% of the populations are farmer, another 40% are move to the cities for career call in government or private sector. They plant uphill padi, peppers, rubber, cocoa, tapioca and cash crop. In a 18 century, the choice for setting higher ground for longhouse was mean for security reason, because on those days head hunting was active practice in Sarawak. It is believe that our ancestors from uphill moved to downward hill.
