2011 has been a year of transformation. My vacations to Brazil have taught me how to be energy efficient and I have applied those lessons to my business. As of today we have reduced our energy usage by 50% from 1 year ago. With the help of my contractor, I have redesigned the salon. To awaken your body and senses one needs proper nutrition, exercise and less stress. In March 2010 I reached a low point in health and strength and decided to make changes. I had a herniated disk, sciatica, pain shooting down my leg. It hurt to stand sit and lay down, I was in bed for at least a week. I started to go to two chiropractors and listened to friends and read as much info on sciatica as possible. I learned you need blood flow and collagen to heal this. So I continued to go to the chiropractors and do stretching exercises everyday. I recalled what a good friend once told me, her mothers arthritis pain was eliminated with eidon liquid silica. Silica builds collagen in the body! I started to take 3 tablespoons per day. In May I began to feel better I started hiking and started doing the P90X workout. I could barely do any pushups. In August I started taking a new protein powder from www.sunwarrior.com; I completed this three month workout by October and began going to the gym. In October, I learned of some new anti aging vitamins called Vitality. I have been taking these vitamins everyday for 3 months now. In November I spent ten days in Brazil working out everyday drinking fresh coconut water and organic grape juice. I now am almost as strong as I was in my 20's. I have never been able to increase my strength so fast! I am benching 200lbs and curling 40 . I am a vegetarian and I am awake and ready for 2011.

The Assistant Program, how to tip and things that confuse me.

When an assistant helps me with a Japanese Straightening, I always give my assistant 30% of the total amount tipped, if there is a second assistant shampooing she/he gets 10%
The assistants also get paid by the hour between $8 to $10 per hour.
Peter Louis Salon Assistants earn better total daily tips now than 11 years ago when I only cut hair. When I cut hair I would get a 20% tip and my assistant would get $3 to $5 for the shampoo.

As my assistant is trained she/he is allowed to help with more aspects of the straightening process until she/he becomes a full stylist. This takes about 3 years or less.

If an assistant ever tells you a far fetched story please tell me. I recently fired an assistant who failed her cosmetology license test 3 times. I like to give people a chance to succeed. But this assistant also began to lie to clients about her compensation to solicit a greater tip. Please speak to me, don't believe everything you hear.

When I go to a doctors office I never ask the receptionist or assistant for Medical Advice I ask the Dr. At the salon I notice clients asking the receptionist and the assistants for hair advice. If the receptionist or assistant could properly answer these questions they would be your Colorist or Stylist not the assistant or receptionist. Please direct your hair questions to the Stylist or Colorist that you came to see.

Benita was one of my favorite characters on that 90's tv show "In Living Color"

Benita would sit in her rocking chair and say nice things to the people who would pass by and once they were gone spill all the angry gossip about that person.

Everyone has a Benita in there lives. If you know one avoid their calls you don't need the negativity. If you work with one, well that is a problem like a disease it can infect everyone at work.

How do you diagnose the symptoms of having a Benita:

Benita is really nice to you.
Benita asks you many personal questions like a friend would.
Benita tells you some gossip, if you take the bait she embellishes and tells you more.
Benita will make up gossip to make herself look good.
Benita will make up gossip to make others around her look bad.
Benita will tell gossip about you to your fellow employees.
Benita will try to turn the employees against each other.
If you don't help Benita steal she will try to get you fired. How?
If your job is to clean she will tell you not to, then complain to the Boss about uncleanliness.
Benita will even complain to her clients about the uncleanliness of her space.
Benita will take things without asking or paying the actual cost of the item.
Benita will do her whole family in your salon without offering to pay the cost of color.

If you have a Benita growing in your salon or workspace. You will have to decide if you want to remove the cancer with surgery or heal it using a holistic approach.

Remember the bigger your Benita gets the more painful it will be to remove, but you and your staff will feel much better and happier. You could even make Benita's clients happy too by giving them 50% off all services.

I have been asleep for about two years. I dreamed I sold my business moved to South America with my girlfriend and became a stock and commodities trader. Today I suddenly awoke and went to the gym at 5am. I am weak, but I will be strong again. While on the elliptical machine, I repeated to myself "I am a creative businessman and hairstylist; I do this one thing well; I can't do anything else." I realize it is important in life to find the thing you do best and focus.
I am lucky to have built a strong business to withstand my Rip Van Winkle years and the financial collapse.

How my Client broke up her Kidney Stones!

I love hearing about natural cures and today a client told me her story.
She had Kidney Stones so the Doctor prescribed pain medication and set her up with an appointment to have the Lithotriptor procedure. While you are lying down, a machine called a lithotriptor sends targeted shock waves to break up the kidney stones into crystals small enough to be passed. She decided to try an alternative solution recommended by her friends Which can be found in "The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health" authored by Michio Kushi and Alex Jack. This method worked for her and she cancelled her appointment for the the Lithotriptor procedure.

She used the ginger compress technique which is a very useful for drawing toxins out of the kidney area, increase the blood circulation in that area, and helping to dissolve hardened masses such as stones.
a. Purchase one pound of organically grown ginger root. The ginger root should not be shriveled. Ideally, there should be blue-tinted veins barely visable on the outside of the ginger root. This means that it is juicier and more potent.
b. You will need:
i. a large pot with a heavy lid
ii. two large cotton towels
iii. two medium cotton hand-towels
iv. a piece of cheesecloth or cotton handkerchief
v. a grater
vi. lots of ginger root
vii. a partner to give you the compress
viii. spring water or filtered water
ix. comfortable location to lie down
c. Gather all items listed in step "b." above.
d. Begin heating spring (or filtered) water in large pot. The goal is to get the water very hot _without_ boiling it.
e. Grate a ping-pong ball-sized "glob" of ginger and put in a bowl temporarily. Do not use a "cheese" grater because the ginger needs to be grated into tiny pieces. It takes time to grate this much ginger.
f. Put the grated ginger into the cheesecloth (or handkerchief) and tie the close with some string.
g. Squeeze the juice from the grated ginger (wrapped in cloth) into the heated (but not boiling) water. Then throw the grated ginger (wrapped in cloth) into the pot. Heat for five minutes, but do NOT boil.
h. Remove shirt and lie down on stomach.
i. Set the covered pot of heated water with ginger next to you.
j. Dip hand towel into pot until it is submerged except for the ends of the towel. Remove towel from water and wring-out by holding the towel over the post and twisting the dry ends. k. When towel is thoroughly wrung-out, place it across the lower back, covering both kidneys. It should feel very hot. If it is too hot to stand, let towel cool off in the air before trying to place it again. Cover hand-towel with larger towel to keep the heat in.
l. Let towel sit on kidney area until it cools off. Then repeat with the other hand towel. Keep repeating until you have placed the hand towel five or six times or until your back is too sensitive to even a mildly hot hand towel.
Notes: a. It is much easier to have a partner perform the ginger compress.
b. Have the partner lightly massage the back during the ginger compress.
c. Try to keep the pot of water covered to keep it hot.

I am back in Brazil this time to visit Buzios, the "Hamptons" of Brazil. This is a great town with 24 beaches and I found one vegetarian restaurant, with delicious food :) It was also fun listening to a live rock band play American songs, they integrated F&$K into every song like it was a term of endearment. The americans in the audience were cracknig up laughing.

Icelandic Glacier ice is approximately 1200 years old, very dense, crystal clear and melts much slower than regular ice which is great for drinks . This Icelandic Ice miner and his girlfriend are picking up some ice for their whiskey. FYI its 57 degrees here at the base of the Glacier.

I am growing my own hair back!

I am currently growing my own hair back, I have about an 1/8 of an inch regrowth all over my head after 5 treatments about 2 1/2 weeks. The Full course of treatment is 30 twenty minute sessions over one year. It's a great time to be alive, we can still save the world from pollution, genetic engineering and global warming and I am going to have a full head of hair again!
