In June we made a welcome return to Haslemere, and we had a treat in store! It felt like a proper summer's evening; people were sitting at tables in the sunshine outside the White Hart. We enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks inside, before going next door to the restaurant.

As usual, we asked the restaurant to choose our menu. Here's what we had:

papari chat - served in a peacock dish, a one bite appetiser

palack chat

Momo chha

pani pura (served on a shot glass, described as mini Yorkshire puddings with mint juice)

raspberry and mint sphere (molecular gastronomy!)

then...

three main dishes served together:

garlic chilli chicken massala - medium heat

a lamb vindaloo that was absolutely gorgeous - my favourite

makhani chicken -mild

served with black dhal, bindi and a selection of rice and naans.

Finally, a beautiful mango kulfi with fresh fruits. Sorry, no photo of that, but it looked and tasted beautiful!

Wed 10th July - Fewa Inn, Whitehill

The table is booked! Wednesday 10th July. We decided at June's meeting that we'll go back to the Fewa Inn in Whitehill, which opened last year and we visited last July. This is a Gurkha restaurant in what used to be a pub under various names - it's been The Roadmaker, The Outback, and the Prince of Wales at various points in its history.

We enjoyed ourselves last year. The menu has lots of Nepali and Indian choices. It's a large comfortable room with Nepali decorations and it has plenty of room for us. There's a decent sized car park at the back and plenty of on-street parking if that's full.

Whitehill and the surrounding area are still a bit of a desert for pubs - although its population is bigger than both Alton and Petersfield, there's only one pub in town. So aperitifs will be at the Woodlark from about 7 pm and then we drive the short distance (0.3 miles or 2 minutes away) to the Fewa Inn for dinner at 8.

This sounds like a new restaurant but it's not. Also despite the blurb, it really is in the middle of Grayshott, exactly where the Manzil, Gurkha Durbar and Himalayan Garden were. The history doesn't mention its recent predecessors but we understand that the leading characters - apart from the owner - are exactly the same. So we'll see some familiar faces when we visit!

We've done a trial run and can confirm that the decor is tasteful, the food is very tasty, and we'll see some familiar faces when we visit. Just three of us tried it out but all nine dishes that we ordered were excellent.

Spice Lounge in September!

The table is booked! We had a great time at Dilli in Haslemere in August, and we thought we'd head back to Petersfield in September. Although we went to the Spice Lounge in January, we're looking forward to another visit. So please note: Tuesday 12th

We won't ask for the kulchi lamb this time - that's something that I just couldn't sort out over the phone without knowing numbers, but maybe we can plan ahead next time.

I'm going to ask for feedback whether we should do more Wednesdays - at the moment the majority of our meetings are Tuesdays, like this one.

Wed 9th August - The Dilli, Haslemere

The table is booked! The Dilli in Haslemere opened on Sunday 16th July, to great reviews. I celebrated my birthday there and thought it tremendous. The cooking is wonderful and the restaurant looks fantastic. It’s more expensive than BayLeaf or Madhuban, but this is justified by the cooking.

We have a table for 10 on the evening of Wednesday 9th August and Bishnu has agreed to do a fixed price menu for us - a bit more than our usual cost but it'll be great.

We’ll meet for aperitifs from 7 pm at the White Horse which is next door on Haslemere High Street. Dinner is booked for 8 pm.

The table is booked! We had a great time at the Bay Leaf in June, and we're looking forward to the opening of Dili in Haslemere in the near future. We decided at June's meeting that we'll go somewhere else that's new in July, the Fewa Inn in Whitehill. This is a Gurkha restaurant in what used to be a pub under various names - it's been The Roadmaker, The Outback, and the Prince of Wales at various points in its history.

I went there last night for a recce and the waiter recognised me as he'd worked at the Gurkha Durbar at some point. The menu isn't as extensive as the Gurkha Durbar but I enjoyed my food and can report that non-alcoholic beer (Bavaria 0.0) was available. It's a large comfortable room with Nepali decorations and it has plenty of room for us. There's a decent sized car park at the back and plenty of on-street parking if that's full.

The table is booked for our May meeting which will take place on Tuesday 9th. That’s the day after the Coronation weekend including the bank holiday Monday. We last visited this restaurant in July, and had a great evening.

Aperitifs will be at the Mill Tavern from 7-ish. It's about ten minutes' walk to the restaurant or three minutes by car. Dinner is booked for 8 pm.

April - Madhuban

The table is booked! We return to the Madhuban in Liss on Wednesday 12th April. It's one of the top Indian/Bengali restaurants in the area and it's renowned for its fine cooking. We last went there in May and enjoyed some great food. You can see some pictures of the evening on Instagram.

Spice Lounge in January!

We're looking forward to our first visit since the pandemic to the Spice Lounge, Petersfield.

When we go there, we often have a special, kulchi lamb, a slow-cooked whole leg, but we need really good numbers to order it (and eat it!).

I suggest this time we go for a variety of standard dishes - let's see what else the restaurant has to offer - but if at least eight members reply by Friday night asking for lamb, I'll see what we can do.

November meeting - Shah Manzil, Liss

The table is booked! Our November meeting will be on Tuesday 8th November at the Shah Manzil restaurant, 73 Station Road, Liss, close to the level crossing. Aperitifs will be at the Whistlestop from about 7 pm and then dinner will be at 8 pm.

We haven't eaten at this restaurant under its current ownership. After a particularly rubbish evening in 2007 we scrubbed it from the list. At the time it was called Saaki, and we had no idea how it could class itself as a restaurant.

I took a solo trip to try it out last week. It's family run, brightly lit, fairly busy even midweek, and I was very pleased with my choices:

	Mixed starter including samosa, onion bhaji, seekh kebab,chicken tikka and a piece of fried paneer
	Lamb Anari Bakra (lamb cooked with hot spice and crushed red chillis), Hydrabadi Palak Dal (yellow lentils, cumin, garlic, spinach), pilau rice and a naan

October meeting - Gurkha Durbar, Grayshott

The table is booked! Our October meeting takes place in Grayshott on Tuesday 11th at the Gurkha Durbar. Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican from about 7 pm, and then dinner is booked for 8 pm just up the road.

We had a great visit there in June and had planned to go back in November. We’ve had to switch. Our plan was Shah Manzil in Liss in October but it’s closed on Tuesdays. We’ll figure out a date later.

We need to give the restaurant as good an estimate of numbers as possible by Monday at the latest but an early reply is very helpful. There's lots of parking in Grayshott including at the F&P, and three public car parks, as well as on the street.

Sad news

We heard through Petersfield Rugby Club that Malcolm Godden died last week. He was one of the Curry Club originals - he rarely missed a meeting until he suffered a stroke at home about ten years ago. After that, he and Jo still made huge efforts to attend. We soon learnt which venues were wheelchair-friendly - sadly many weren't. We'll raise a glass to his memory at our September meeting.

Slightly late - I was away - but the table is booked! We'll return to Dhanmondi in Whitehill for our next meeting, on Wednesday 10th. This was actually the last place we met before the pandemic, in February 2020, when we had a pretty strong turnout. It will be good to return.

Aperitifs will be at the Woodlark, the pub/restaurant just 150 yards away on the other side of the A325 from about 19:00. It's a Marstons pub and I'm interested to see what beers they'll have from their excellent range.

The table is booked for our July meeting which will take place on Wednesday 13th. We last visited this restaurant in October 2019, before the pandemic put a stop to our meetings, so it's great to return there and we're sure of a warm welcome.

The table is booked! Our June meeting takes place in Grayshott on Tuesday 14th at the Gurkha Durbar. The Gurkha Durbar focuses on Nepalese food and has some delicacies that you don't find so often elsewhere.

AMENDED! Change of date

The table is booked! A trip to Madhuban in Liss is long overdue. It's one of the top Indian/Bengali restaurants in the area and it's renowned for its fine cooking.

We last went there in April 2019, and our 2020 visit was cancelled due to the pandemic. So at last - we return on Tuesday 17th May! Aperitifs will be at the Whistlestop (GU33 7DS for your SatNav) from about 18:30 and then dinner is at 19:30.

We're back! After a gap of two years, we had a great evening on 16th February at Bay Leaf in Grayshott. Although several people couldn't make it due to a case of COVID, it was a good turnout and everyone enjoyed the delicious food including some specials.

The table is booked! Our next meeting will be at Malabon in Petersfield, on Tuesday 15th March. Aperitifs will be at the Red Lion from about 6.30, and then dinner is at 7.30. Please note the start time - early than we used to do.

The restaurant have limited space and it may be difficult or impossible to accommodate extra people at the last moment. We need to let them know numbers on Monday evening so please let me know somehow ideally by 6 pm Monday. The table is booked! We'll return to Dhanmondi in Whitehill for our next meeting,on Tuesday 11th. It's often been our February choice since we first discovered it in 2006. .

Aperitifs will be at the Woodlark, the pub/restaurant just 150 yards away on the other side of the A325 from about 19:30. I'm interested to see what beers are available. It's a Marstons pub and I'm hoping they'll have a range of their excellent bottled beers available.
