Delvine Estate - Lovely area

In reply to Wild camping in Scotland: The right to roam:

Delvine Estate - Lovely area just outside the village of Spittalfield in Perthshire on the road between Spittalfield and Meikleour. Contains Inchuthill - a large Roman Camp and is in a lovely curve of the River Tay.
Visited today - first time in about 40 years - I used to live on the estate. Unfortunatly met an individual - dont know his name - so I will call him Flunkey - who was deligerant and indicated that the Estate owner - David likes his privacy and that I was in his garden - at this time I was more than a mile from the house - Big garden. Anyway Flunkey also believed that the Estate had the right to make the law and he had what I can only explain as a strange interpretation of right to roam.
Flunkey clearly wants to keep this area private for David and the salmon fishermen on the Tay.
The area can be accessed by the Aird Farm Road near Lethendy or by the main drive just half a mile outside of Spittalfield. If you go enjoy but watch out for Flunkey!

Thanks for the links. It seems that the local copy of Firefox does indeed maintain a list of blocked sites, which is updated from Google every 30 minutes! So, I guess that allows them to track when your're running Firefox or not.

Also, Firefox will send information (including cookies) to Google every time you find a "bad" site.

Luckily it can be disabled in Edit -> Preferences -> Security.

I use the clock throughout the day as I can see it from my desk and it's seemed reliable to me.They are working inside it though at the moment so I guess they needed to stop it temporarily. Here's a gratuitous link to a timelapse I took of it from my desk the other morning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIpbE0zqiRs

Absolutely. I heard that people used to be able to go up there 15 years ago or so, but there were problems with suicides. I'd like it to be opened up again, or as Si says, at least given a webcam!

And Si, Joe Chamberlain wasn't Prime Minister, but arguably was more politically successful than his son, Neville, as he held a great deal of influence in the government around the turn of the 20th century - perhaps a bit of a Peter Mandelson figure! There's actually quite a good Wikipedia page about him.

You're completely right Pete. Thoughout my university life I didn't wear a watch and this has continued into my professional life here - there's no need when I work close to the old master! It really does completely throw my day when its out though.
It would be fantastic to see Birmingham from the top wouldn't it. Like you Si I'd pay to go up there!

Maybe they are fixing the lift to allow trips to the top? I'd pay good moolah to survey Edgbaston from up there. A panoramic webcam would be a cheap and easy marketing device meanwhile.

Hi and thanks Anon for letting us know!
I have to admit that like Pete Ashton, I hardly ever wear a watch any more, and every time I pull my phone out of my pocket to check the time - then realise that Old Joe is smiling down on me - I feel rather daft.
Let's hope it's all back to normal very soon.

Hello all,
As an employee of the Univeristy I would like to say to all that the temporary stopping of the clock is due to ongoing repair works. They are, I believe, forced stoppages in order to continue repairs to the internal lift mechanism.
It did however make me panic this morning when I thought I was nearly an hour late for work! I didn't realise how much I relied on the clock until workmen stopped the bells from chiming at the end of the summer but am delighted they are now singing away (literally as I type).
Hopefully the work will be over soon and the city of Birmingham will once again have it's lovely Old Joe back in perfect working order.
Best wishes.

ive lived in stirchley all of my life (and so have my parents, grand parents and great grand parents!!). ive recently started university studying social work and its got me interested in my community. one thing about stirchley is that nobody knows where it is!! probably due to the lack of activity or shopping facilities compared to surrounding areas. i end up telling people that im from kingsheath just because people know of that area! bournville has cadburys, sellyoak has the university and kingsheath is great for shopping - what stirchley needs is something to stand out and bring in some community cohesion. i live on the pinneapple estate and find it sad that i dont know my neighbours - especially some of the more isolated individuals like the elderly or young mothers. we need a new project to bring the community together and get people (especially the young as they are the future of stirchley) to come together and plan how we can make our community thrive!

Hi Vivek,

Yeah this is now an option too. I originally wrote this post before exchange added these features. It's worth noting though, that you need to add a rule to "redirect" rather than just "forward" your mail, since otherwise, IIRC, it wraps them in another message for forwarding.

Another alternative is to set up a mail filter (such as it is) on Exchange. Use IE to log on to the uni's web-based email and add a 'Rule' which matches all email and simply forwards it to your preferred email account. Since this rule works on your inbox, ALL your mail will actually get forwarded including the ones sent by internal Exchange users. I was bitten by this some months ago.

There's an obvious accessibility issue with using javascript to convey information. Where it's not available I'd have an image or 'si@guess the rest'.

Routinely using 'mail AT domain dot com' seems dumb. It's no harder to harvest than 'mail@domain.com'. I keep meaning to add spam poison to my site to screw up harvesters, like http://www.spampoison.com but since the effect is very indirect so I don't bother.

If I remember correctly, I've seen this scheme before. Around the year '99-00, to be precise. Instead of using javascript to write it out, folks used to use html elements, which uses the same character codes. For some reason, it didn't become very popular. I'm not sure if that's because it was immediately 'grokked' by the bots or because folks just can't be bothered to use character codes.

Thanks for the reassuring reply, let's hope the weather is clear because I want the boys to remember the amazing views when we get to the top! - Obviously the dog won't care about the views, just her lunch.

Hi Sam,

When my grandmother still had her dog, we'd take him up all sorts around Snowdonia, and he loved it. There was never a problem I don't think. There's nothing on this route that requires the use of hands, though yeah some of the scree areas are a little steep.

Good luck!

I have come across these pictures and it takes me back to jan 1967 when as a schoolgirl and staying with mountain rescue instructors at Ogwen Cottage. we climbed the glyders and tryfan, I never forgot my experiance it was breathtakingly beautiful. and with my husband we have been going to snowdonia for a couple of years he loves it there and has just walked snowdon and now when I go on to him about this fantastic experiance I had he now understands my passion for that area of Wales.
