The above local animal rescue groups have serious needs in order to continue their charitable functions. Each group has applied for the Art Paws 2015 Underdog Pet Rescue Grant. These pet rescuers and community foundations all deserve some financial help, but the Underdog Grant will had to narrow it down to two worthy organizations.

Reno’s Art Paws is Artown’s only ‘bring your dog’ event boasts the annual canine carnival that brings thousands of dog lovers and their pets to McKinley Arts & Culture Center Park. Over the past 15 years, the private organizers have donated more than $100,000 back to the pet rescue non-profit community. This year, we will be presenting two separate grants to two well-deserving local (within 75 miles of Reno) groups, from the list above.

In keeping with tradition, one charity/non-profit also will be picked by the popular People’s Choice vote at this year’s July Art Paws event. But for the second year running, two other pet-centric organizations will take home proceeds, as well.

Art Paws Executive Director Landess Witmer is very excited to announce this year's winners: The US Wolf Refuge and Palomino Valley Pet Rescue. "Now, we just need your help in ‘raising the woof' for more money for the animals!"

Landess invites everyone to "Attend Artown’s 15^th Annual Art Paws on Sunday, July 12. You can directly participate in the fundraising that helps animals in our community through the Art Paw silent auctions, hourly raffles, beer garden, and much more. Help us generate funds for these grants!"

All applications were given careful consideration by a special Underdog Committee. Grant beneficiaries for 2016 will be chosen and announced next year. The period for submitting applications is now CLOSED for 2015.

Past awards have been very helpful to our local non-profit pet organizations. These hardworking pet rescue groups strive to provide pets (dogs, cats, ferrets, wolves, horse, bunnies, etc) the happy, healthy lives they deserve. The 2014 recipients were Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows and Canine Rehabilitation Center and Sanctuary (CRCS). In 2015, seven nonprofits who help animals applied locally for the Art Paws Underdog Grants.

THE DOG EVENT THAT MAKES PEOPLE BEG!

Artown's 15th Annual Art Paws is doggedly working to raise money for the animals in our community. Our two Underdog Grants online as well as our People's Choice Award at Art Paws fetch awareness and support for local animal-aid organizations.

We are the infamous "bloodhounds of raising money for the animals!" admits executive director of Art Paws, Landess Witmer. "Honestly, I will sit up and beg, if it means a donation or sponsorship for Art Paws."

And Art Paws is successful; more than 5,000 people and pets convene at this annual canine carnival of fun. Dogs of every imaginable breed parade through the shaded park at McKinley Arts and Cultural Center at what is now known as Artown's "only bring your dog day."

The University of Nevada’s Pre-Veterinary Club will be hosting a fundraiser for Animal Rescue Group of Northern Nevada (ARGONN) with a community dog wash called Pre-Vet Club’s Pup Wash. The event is from 12 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. The location will be at Manzanita Bowl at the University of Nevada, Reno.

ARGONN is a 501c3 charitable organization that helps out local communities such as Fernley, Lovelock, Silver Springs, and Wadsworth Nevada. The shining point of this wonderful group is the huge impact they have had on controlling feral cat colonies in the aforementioned towns. In conjunction with the local Animal Care Center veterinarian, Dr. Remsen, ARGONN does Trap Neuter Return (TNR) clinics to get local feral cats safely fixed to keep the population stable.

The UNR Pre-Vet Club decided to pair with ARGONN because both organizations share the common goal of helping animals that can’t help themselves. Many of these animals are abandoned, abused, or both. As future veterinarians, these students always hope to see animals happy and healthy. The overall goal for the Pup Wash is to raise $500 that would go towards vaccinations and food for their animals.

Local celebrities and community leaders are coming together to raise money and awareness for homeless pets! Heels & Hounds, a premier fashion show and champagne brunch, will take place on Sunday, April 19 at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa from 10am until 2pm. Illustrious personalities, including Billie Adams, Sheriff Chuck Allen, Krys Bart, Fritz Battcher, Marsha Berkbigler, Tierra Bonaldi, Tim Broadway, Sean Cary, Mark Estee, Sean Gamble, Ellie Lopez-Bowlan and Debbie McCarthy, will strut their stuff down the runway along with fashionably dressed dogs. Clothing is generously provided by Dillard’s, while emcees are local style icons Isha Casagrande and Connie Wray-Gaudard.

The event will aim to raise $50,000 for Nevada Humane Society’s lifesaving efforts.

Local WHC Foundation Issues Matching Grant Challenge to Pets of the Homeless

The WHC Foundation of Reno has pledged $10,000 to the nonprofit Feeding Pets of the Homeless if they can raise an additional $10,000 from donors in northern Nevada by the end of September.

Funding from the Foundation will be used to purchase pet food and provide emergency veterinary care for pets of the homeless in northern Nevada.

Jasmine, a one and half year old Labrador was limping. She and her owner live in a car in Reno. She is a therapy dog. The pet owner called Pets of the Homeless for help. The case manager coordinated an appointment for Jasmine at Fairgrounds Animal Hospital. The dog had a laceration. It was infected. It required surgical closure. Jasmine left the hospital with an antibiotic, pain and anti-inflammatory medications and an e-collar to prevent her from chewing the injury. Even with a discount, the bill was over $300. In another case, Natty, a German Shepherd living in a car with her homeless owner was in pain. The dog was treated at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital in Carson City for an ear infection. With the discount the invoice was over $120.

These cases illustrate the need and costs for veterinary care for pets that are owned by the homeless. Without the help of Pets of the Homeless, Jasmine‘s pain would have increased, the infection would have spread and she would have eventually died from the lack of treatment. Natty unless treated would have lost her hearing or worse.

In 2014, the agency served 1,510 pets through its emergency care and wellness clinics programs in 84 cities across 18 states. Pets of the Homeless partnered with 92 veterinary hospitals to provide quality veterinary treatment to pets who would otherwise go untreated.

Matching funds and the pledge from WHC Foundation will go a long way to help those pets who cannot get the help they need. Reduce the needless suffering of pets owned by the homeless by donating now. For information visit petsofthehomeless.org or call our national headquarters at 775-841-7463.

America's TOP DOGS, AKC listing shows who barks highest!

AKC Just Let the Dogs OUT...

The most popular dog breeds list for 2014 was released today from the AKC. The Labrador retriever is number one again on the list this year, people just love their labs!

Americans love their dogs but some dog breeds are more popular than others among the folks in this nation. The latest list for the most popular dog breeds was just revealed and while Labrador retrievers hold fast at number one for another year, there has been some movement on this list with the other breeds, according to MSN News on Feb. 26.

The American Kennel Club rankings for the most popular dog breed in 2014 were released Thursday and the Labrador retriever, German shepherd and the Golden retriever hold the top three spots, as they did on last year’s list. The number four spot for the most popular dog went to the bulldog, which has moved up one spot from the 2013 American Kennel Club list to take over the number four spot for 2014.

The bulldog pushed the beagle down to the number five spot, even though that breed won the Westminster Dog Show this year. The poodle moved up a spot and is now at number seven, up from number eight spot in 2013.

The Rottweiler is down to number ten, from its number nine spot last year. Gone from the top 10 list is the Dachshund, which was the number 10 dog in 2013. The French bulldog is new to the list this year and it is already at the number nine spot.

According to the AKC press release, the bulldog holds its highest ranking on this list than ever before. The French bulldog breaks into this list at number nine and it is the first time it has hit the top ten in nearly 100 years, according to the AKC.org.

3. Yearly Budget (all expected income for this year & anticipated expenses including a breakdown and explanation of overhead expenses)

4. Wish List (up to a half-page of desired and feasible items, continuing education, or organization “expansions”)

5. Volunteer Involvement (up to a half-page detailing numbers and hours of last year’s volunteers, emphasis on increasing volunteer involvement this year)

6. Biggest Success Story (up to a half-page explanation)

7. Plan for Growth (up to a half-page explanation defining how our grant would help)

8. Non-profit designation

The Art Paws Underdog Grant will be awarded on the basis of need to two local animal aid organizations, emphasis given to groups that quantify their animal aid. The organization must have been in operation for a minimum of three years.

For the purposes of this grant, LOCAL is defined as a Nevada organization within 75 miles of Reno. Furthermore, for the purposes of this grant, ANIMAL AID is defined as “animal welfare” as the primary organizational focus.

However, there are still many wonderful pets in need of loving homes and as a new year has begun, now is the time to give a deserving pet a new life—in your home!

“The hype of the holiday season of giving and love opened up doors for so many pets to find homes. Now, with a new year underway, our goal is to place some of our pets that have been here longer than others into the homes they deserve,” said Kimberly Wade, Senior Manager of Communications and Events for Nevada Humane Society. “While our average length of stay for both cats and dogs is less than 18 days, there are some animals that reside here longer and to give them a new year and a new life would be the best gift all of us could ask for. The New Year is not just about us as people. It’s about the animals too and there isn’t a better way to start off the New Year than by helping someone less fortunate—a homeless pet!”

Adoption fees during this special animal adoption promotion:

· Adult Cat Over the Age of Three: FREE
· Adult Cat Under the Age of Three: $25
· Specially Selected Adult Dogs: $20
· Other Adult Dogs: $50 (not including puppies and specialty breeds)

Every dog and cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, services normally costing over $240. Senior citizens, age 55 and up, may adopt senior pets, age 6 year and up, for free through the Seniors for Seniors program.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Corrections are hosting the third of four annual saddle-trained horse adoption events in Carson City on Saturday, October 18, at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) located at 1721 Snyder Avenue.

Fifteen wild horses from ranges on BLM-administered public lands in Nevada and California will be offered for adoption at the NNCC corrals. One burro born at a facility in Utah will also be offered. Public viewing begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a competitive bid adoption conducted by an auctioneer beginning at 10 a.m. The beginning bid on all horses is $150.

The horses range in age from four to seven years and vary in weight and color. The horses are saddle-trained at the NNCC by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program and receive at least 120 days of training.

Directions to NNCC:
Traveling south on Interstate 580, take exit 38 and turn left on Fairview Drive, make a right on South Edmonds Drive and then another right on Snyder Avenue, then left into the NNCC. Traveling north on 395, turn right onto Snyder Avenue and right into the NNCC.

Potential adopters are asked to enter the NNCC from the north side and watch for signs and event personnel at the extreme south end of the facility directing event participants to the horse corrals and parking.

NNCC rules prohibit the public from wearing any blue clothing, blue jeans, tank tops or shorts at the auction. Also, please no cell phones, cameras or recording devices.

Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows Inc (CRTM) is a Nevada corporation and non-profit organization. CRTM is dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals for the Number Two Euthanized Breed in the United States. 




By way of our committed officers, volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, and professional trainers, we seek to match dogs with carefully screened forever homes. CRTM provides education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, adoptions, positive behavior training, socialization and a good nutritional program.



Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows, Inc. (CRTM) is blessed with committed officers and volunteers.  Everyone helps with fostering the dogs, transportation, works at adoption events, and provides in-kind (mileage and gas expenses) for home-checks.  Additionally, all of our web page and other social media, fundraising is done in-kind.






CRTM will utilize the funds from the Underdog Grant to potentially increase foster homes through social media, word-of-mouth, PSA’s and adoption event opportunities .  We will continue to seek other fundraising endeavors with various raffles upcoming so we will have a "small bank" for any emergencies that may arise.  Additionally, we will make improvements to the small Chi Haven "foster area" by improving the insulation and  increasing the yard size for them to play.  We will also repair the cooler and repair the leak in roof before winter.

Artown’s 14^th Annual Art Paws hosted a Wine Pet Party, Fri, June 13, 4:30 to 7pm, at Ben’s Fine Wine & Spirits, 3480 Lakeside Drive, Reno. The gala was well attended by pet lovers, wine lovers, and bargain hunters!

One of the biggest wine, beer, and spirit tastings of the year, this party benefited the animals. A ten dollar donation at the door got unlimited premium tastings, tasty appetizers, from La Cucina Italian Restaurant, and live music.

The Bow Wow Silent Auction touted five tables of goodies from casinos, local restaurants, pet businesses, and jewels from Michael & Sons!

Many, many thanks goes to our tireless volunteers who helped with set up, ticket sales, and auction items. Thank you to everyone!

THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PET CEMETERIES & CREMATORIES (IAOPCC) NAMES FIRST ACCREDITED PET CREMATORY FACILITY IN THE NATION

A Beloved Friends Pet Crematory of Northern Nevada -

First in the Nation to Pass Pet Crematory Accreditation

Atlanta, Georgia – April 15, 2014 – The International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories (IAOPCC) has announced the first Pet Crematory facility in the nation to pass its Accreditation Program. A Beloved Friends Pet Crematory of Northern Nevada received its Accreditation award on April 1, 2014.

Pet Parents can now feel reassured about the care their deceased animal receives now that the new worldwide Accreditation Standards have been announced for pet cemeteries and crematories by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories (IAOPCC).

Founded in 1971, the IAOPCC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the standards, ethics and professionalism of pet cemeteries and crematories worldwide.

In an unprecedented and historical first, the IAOPCC is the only organization with published recommended procedures for every step of the pet cremation process, including, transportation, each type of pet cremation, readily retrievable records, facility standards and continuing education for pet crematorium staff members. Following five years of study and research, these Accreditation standards, processes, and program of inspections were rolled out in January of 2014 across the United States, Canada, and worldwide to its Members. Since 2009 the IAOPCC Standards Committee, a group of eight pet crematory owners and operators located throughout the US and Canada, have met monthly to develop these intense and rigorous standards.

A Beloved Friends Pet Crematory of Northern Nevada, in Reno, was the first pet crematory in the country to complete this inspection process. Before applying in March 2014 to become accredited, owners, Steve and Elaine Woods, had spent several months prior examining its systems, processes, and procedures to be sure every aspect met the IAOPCC’s standards of quality. After a thorough review and inspection, they were awarded Accreditation status on April 1, 2014.

Through the IAOPCC’s Accreditation Program, pet crematories are evaluated against a pool of more than 240 standards representing the best practices in pet cremation care and management. An international task force of crematory operators created and continually update the standards to reflect the latest developments and improvements in pet aftercare care, pet cremation techniques, records, cleanliness, staff and client safety, and areas essential to excellent pet and client care.

In an industry requiring very little oversight, other than environmental regulations and business licensing, pet aftercare has been largely a self-regulated profession. Currently there are only 2 states, Illinois and New York, in the United States that have any legal standards for pet cremation. With the introduction of the IAOPCC Accreditation Program, the IAOPCC has given the industry and the pet owner a measure of protection regarding the integrity of the pet aftercare processes from those pet crematories who seek out Accreditation and inspection.

Help Raise $100,000 for Homeless Pets at

Nevada Humane Society’s

Walk for Animals

Don’t miss the 7^th annual Walk for Animals, this Saturday, May 24 at Sparks Marina—an exciting, fun event to benefit homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society. The goal of the event is to raise $100,000 to help provide care and find homes for the more than 15,000 pets expected to pass through the shelter this year.

Sponsored by Petco Foundation, the Walk for Animals kicks off at 9am. Registration opens at 8am and festivities continue until 1pm. The public is welcome to bring their dogs on leashes (or cats) and spend a fun day in the park.

“We’re expecting over 1,000 walkers, many with their canine companions,” said Kevin Ryan, Chief Executive Officer for Nevada Humane Society. “This event is so important because the funds help homeless pets who arrive at our shelter daily. In 2013, over 12,000 animals were treated through Nevada Humane Society, and we expect to care for even more this year. You can feel good knowing that your support made a difference, as we consistently have one of the highest save rates in the nation.”

Festivities at the Walk for Animals include a variety of exhibitors, pet adoptions, pet contests, entertainment, refreshments and more. In addition, Nevada Humane Society will be providing low-cost vaccines and microchips for all pets on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration for the Walk for Animals may be done online or by using a printed brochure. Walkers who raise $35 or more receive a t-shirt and those who raise more receive additional prizes. More information, including the downloadable brochure, is available at NevadaHumaneSociety.org.
