MOM'S ... TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF!

With Mother’s Day just a few days away, we thought we’d encourage moms to renew and relax. With all that there is to do, it’s tricky for Moms to make time for themselves. Here are some tips to do so:

Change Your Expectations
Remember, it’s OK to cut corners — let the laundry pile up, don’t over schedule your family, clean the kitchen the next day. Sometimes its more fun to just ease up, let go and just enjoy the moment with your family.

Get a Pedicure!
Who doesn’t love having their feet rubbed! If you are on a budget, think about making a spa day with girlfriends at a beauty school.

Ladies Lunch or Dinner
Set aside time to spend with friends — schedule an evening with girlfriends in advance so you can take some time to enjoy the company of good friends. You’re sure to go to bed full of good memories, love and laughs.

Say No
Every time you say “yes” to someone else, you may be saying “no” to your family and priorities. Start small by listing out things you would like to say “no” to — a group, a volunteer commitment, a project. Be honest and gracious, “I apologize but I’m unable to make that commitment.” Before you know it you may find yourself with more time to focus on what matters in your life and with a bit more time for yourself.

Hire a Sitter for the Day
Have a baby sitter or neighboring teen come over during the day so that you can grocery shop, catch up on house projects or just enjoy doing nothing for a day.

No Cook Night
Get take out from your favorite place and eat on disposable plates — you don’t have to cook OR do the dishes!

Make time for yourself — happy, healthy Moms have happy, healthy kids!

Whether you are married with no kids or married with two names, here are some charming ways to list your family names:

As the years seem to fly by, add in a year when you list your family name to make it easier to identify each special card or announcement you create.

Consider adding in your little one's or pet's age. It's a great reminder for friends or family and it's also fun to look back at cards and see little ones at various ages.

And lastly, PROOFREAD! You'd think this was a no brainer by name misspellings often happen, especially for multitasking moms and dads.

HOW TO - MAKE A BURP CLOTH

Do you remember seeing these cute burp cloths on this blog post? Today's we're sharing a tutorial on how to make them yourself. Burp cloths make a perfect baby gift or are just to make for yourself. They are made out of cloth diapers so they will soak everything up!

Supplies:

cloth diapers (make sure and get the pre-fold kind. You can get 3 ply or 4 ply…just depends on how thick you want them)
fabric pieces (I use fat quarters. I used cotton, but you could use flannel if you like too.)
scissors
sewing machine
pins

Optional Supplies

ribbon
hem gauge

Step 1: Wash all your fabrics, ribbon (if you are using it) and diapers in hot water and dry them. Your fabric will fray on the edges, but that is okay, we won’t notice this in the finished burp cloth. You want to pre-shrink everything because each fabric shrinks a little differently. So it’s good to shrink them all first before sewing them together.

Step 2: After everything is dry, iron them to make them easier to work with.

Step 3: You are going to cut your fabric. For the length, you are going to measure the length of your diaper and add 1 inch. (Each diaper is a little different, so it’s best to measure what you have.) Then the width will be 6”. My diaper was 17” long, so I cut my rectangle to 18” x 6”. This allows for a ½” hem on each side.

Step 4: Lay the fabric strip on your ironing board and using a hem gauge (if you have one), press a ½” hem down each side. If you do not have a hem gauge, you can just eyeball it.

Step 5: Lay the fabric strip down centered in the middle of the diaper with pressed hems facing down. Pin the fabric into place.

Step 6: Now you are ready to sew. Sew through all layers….you want to make your seam as close the edge of the fabric as you can.

If you want to add ribbon, you can now sew strips of ribbon to each side of the fabric.

That’s it…you have now finished your first burp cloth. Now sew a couple more, stack them together and admire them!

FREE DOWNLOAD - Go Make a Kite!

Spring is right around the corner! And what better way to celebrate than by flying a kite! Whether flying outside or even in your living room, our kid’s kite is sure to be a hit.

(The finished product — ready to fly!)

You’ll Need:

White card stock
Scissors
Hole punch
String or yarn
2 straws
Glue
Ribbon

Making our kite is easy!

1. Print out kite shape on card stock (choose our Play or Run kite!)
2. Make a cross using 2 straws and cut to size
3. Glue straws, with the vertical straw over the horizontal straw
4. Punch a hole over the 2 white circles
5. Tie string from one hole to the next, making a loop
6. Tie a long string to the middle of the loop, as the flying line
7. Attach ribbons to the bottom of the kite as a tail
8. Go fly your kite!

NESTING

My husband and I are selling our house, so I haven't been able to put a baby room together yet. In order for me to fulfill my nesting urges, I have been sewing, sewing, sewing. It has been so much fun making things for this new little one we have coming. Here are some pictures of what I have been making ...

All clothes except Kimono dress are from Anna Maria Horner's "Handmade Beginnings" book. Kimono dress is from Amy Butler's "Little Stitches for Little One's" book.

My mom has been oh so busy sewing too. She has made a stack of blankets for baby. Our dog Bear even got a couple blankets made from the leftover scraps. He's a lucky puppy — and he loves blankets.

Making things for the baby has been so much fun for me and I can't wait to see her in all of the cute things I have made. I just know that the homemade blankets from Grandma will be her favorite!

BAKE SOME FUN - MAKE A WHOOPIE PIE

Instead of making a cupcakes or brownies for your next celebration, make a Whoopie Pie! If you have never eaten or heard of a Whoopie Pie, it's basically a giant Oreo. You're kids and guests are sure to enjoy this fun and tasty cookie.

I followed the Emeril Lagasse recipe, found here on FoodNetwork.com

You will need:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 3/4 cups shortening
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 large egg whites
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup whole milk
3 cups confectioners sugar

First, you're going to make the cookie part. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix your sugar, 1/2 cup shortening and 2 eggs together. In another bowl sift your flower, cocoa, baking soda and salt together. Add your dry mix + buttermilk to your sugar, shortening, eggs mix, alternating back and forth - the flour and the buttermilk. Mix in the vanilla. You now have this fabulous chocolate dough.

Does that look like heaven or what?!

Drop dolloped size balls on to your greased cookie sheet. Pop those into the oven and cook for about 10 - 12 min.

When the cookies are done, let them cool on a wire rack. I waited to make the filling the next day. If you do this, place them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet, cover them with plastic wrap and pop them in the freezer. Pro-tip: frosting is easier when your cake, cupcake or in our case, whoopie pie cookies have been thoroughly cooled, frozen and slightly thawed.

Here are my finished cookies — I prefer to use parchment paper, than greasing a cookie sheet.

To make the filling, whisk your egg whites together until they are stiff. Add in the rest of the shortening and vanilla and mix well. Now add in the whole milk and confectioners' sugar. DO NOT ADD GRANULATED SUGAR!!! If you are not paying attention, like me the first time, the filling will be gross and grainy and then you'll have to re-make it. If you'd like to make these for St. Patrick's, you can add in some green food coloring to make green filling!

Match your cookies up in size - tops and bottoms. Use a big spoon and plop some filling on the bottom cookie and then add the top cookie. And there you have it - a Whoopie Pie.

Eat them right away - and if you are not going to, be sure to store them in the fridge.

Side note: this recipe calls for egg whites, so be sure to use fresh, grade A or AA eggs because you'll be consuming raw egg whites. But I promise, they are delicious.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

A lot of girls dream of having a baby and think about how much fun it will be and what to name baby...

I was one of those girls, but I think the only name I had on my list was Becky. I loved the name Becky. All of my dolls were named Becky, and I wanted to have my name legally changed to Becky.

Well, now that we are having a baby, I am rethinking my name list. My little girl will probably not be named Becky (though it is a very nice name, and I have known many really great Becky's). Every time I think about names…I feel a huge weight on my shoulders. One of the many questions you are asked when you are pregnant is, “Have you thought of any names?” When you tell them your list of names, they begin to tell you every reason why you shouldn’t name your child any of those names. Awww….so much pressure!! What if your child’s name rhymes with something unfortunate, what if it doesn’t sound good with your last name, what if, what if, what if...

After much consideration, I have decided not to worry about everyone else and simply come up with a list of names that my husband and I love ... now I only need to worry about what baby announcement I'm going to choose!

Fun Ways We Celebrate Love

We hope you all had as much fun over Valentines as we did …

Paula celebrated with her husband and the minis! Nothing beats snuggling and playing hide and seek hearts with the little ones.

Hillary and her husband enjoyed these decedent and delicious Red Velvet Cupcakes … yummy. Cupcakes are such a cute and simple way to make an event special, and even better, these festive cupcakes came from Costco. Affordable decadence.

Jessica and her hub celebrated with a do-it yourself fondue party with some of their dear friends. The menu began with a cheese fondue which was a mix of milk, garlic, Worchester sauce, dry mustard, and shredded cheddar cheese. Dippings were an assortment of homemade bread, raw cauliflower and broccoli. Next up was the meat (pro-tip: it's best to cook with peanut oil) which consisted of chicken, beef and shrimp and some fun dipping sauces like BBQ and an Anchovy Aioli. Last but not least, the CHOCOLATE!! It's so easy, just make sure you use melting or dipping chocolate. Traditional chocolate chips have a very low burning point — so they can burn really fast and easily. So go with melting chocolate because it has a more manageable heat tolerance. And of course, dip whatever goes with chocolate — fruit, marshmallows, graham crackers ... fondue is fun to do!

MINI HEART PIZZAS

I made these little pizzas last night for some of my favorite kiddos, while their parents were out celebrating the love holiday. They turned out so cute and we were able to make them from scratch, even while entertaining a 6 and 1 year old. So that means if I can make cute little pizzas, you can too!

You'll need:

- 1 or 2 boxes of Jiffy Pizza Dough mix (yes, that same brand that makes the cornbread mix :)
- Mozerella Cheese (they make it so easy, with the pre-shredded and pizza variety)
- Pizza Sauce (I love Trader Joe's)
- Pepperoni (we found these cute teeny tiny ones at the store)&
- other toppings of your choice, but we just used cheese and pepperoni because that's what these kids liked
- a big heart shaped cookie cutter

How to:

1) Heat the oven to 425
2) Follow the directions on the dough box — you just combine water and dough mix together and let sit for 5 min.
3) Knead the dough for a few seconds on a cutting board, but be sure to use lots of flour because the dough can get sticky
4) Flatten the dough out so it's about 1/4" thick or less (anymore than 1/4" and it's too thick to cook through)
5) Using your cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes
6) Place your dough hearts on a cookie sheet that's been sprayed with non-stick spray (or use a silpat — that's what I used)
7) Pre-cook dough for 2-3 min.
8) Take dough out and add toppings — sauce, cheese, pepperoni, etc
9) Pop mini pizzas back in the oven for about 12 more min. or until dough is golden brown and cheese is melted
