A warm afternoon light touched the skin on my arm as I listened to the homily of the last Sunday of 2025. The old lady on the left pew tilted her head as if trying to feel the warmth of the sunlight as well. The airconditioning of the church was running well, it was comfortable even though the afternoon sunshine was warming our backs.

I lifted my left hand to see how that light touched my skin. It felt warm, kind, joyous, and ethereal.

It was peace. Clarity. Love. It was Knowing.

And right at that moment, a silent but strong epiphany happened. I decided to shut down my more than a decade-year-old Facebook page.

The Birth of Petite Momma

Out of boredom as a corporate-woman-turned-stay-at-home-mom in 2013, I scavenged my talent box for a skill I could use to keep me sane while caring for a toddler. I reckoned it doesn't have to be grand, just something to keep me afloat while navigating my first few months as a former slave of the workforce. When you are accustomed to working at least 9 hours a day, five days a week, and even working on holidays, you may experience some "withdrawal symptoms" from being a workaholic. Some say it's probably because of the income you missed, but I would like to point out that that's beside the point. Routines and habits from a decade of working can be deeply ingrained and programmed in your brain, so that an abrupt cessation of the work (not applicable to vacations, I should say) can be debilitating to some. It felt like I was slowly losing my knowledge and skills. And in my case, I lost myself and questioned who I was aside from being a wife and a mother.

In the last quarter of that year, the first skill that came into my mind was baking. I have been sporadically baking for my loved ones since I graduated from college. I thought, maybe baking is the best skill that can keep me preoccupied in between diapers, milk, and house cleaning. To launch my baked goods business, I commissioned my brother to create a logo for me. Hence, the lady flying in a cupcake lining paper, holding a rolling pin ready to smack anyone on the way, was born. Just kidding, I am in no way violent. Well, if not provoked, though. LOL! Along with the logo, the Facebook Page of Petite Momma was born.

Shifting Worlds of Petite Momma

When I scrapped my baking goods business and transitioned to a mom blog in 2014, I retained my brand name and logo - primarily because that was a sound financial decision. This website came to fruition, and my more-than-a-decade-long journey of mom blogging opened up a lot of experiences. Throughout the years, the blog had a plethora of topics - from sharing brands that we love, our travels, recipes, and homeschooling, to self-development and transformation.

As the FB page grew, so did I. But behind the camera and social media accounts, I have always struggled with being public and private. Unbeknownst to many, I started writing on the internet anonymously. I have been blogging since 2006, but was an enigma to the internet. I liked to share, but not too much. And being a mom blog has always kept me between sharing our lives with the world and keeping things private. I have always been private, but I still need to share my stories, my values, my learnings. And when social media became a thing for most blogger moms, it became even more apparent that I am caught between my desire to be anonymous and being an influencer.

After the pandemic, I slowly retreated into my shell. I did not have the energy to share stories on social media, including our YouTube homeschool channel, but still kept my FB page because "sayang naman." My numbers are small compared to others, but it was built organically by true people throughout the years, so simply letting it go would be unimaginable.

For years, my statistics have significantly dropped, my followers plateaued, and my reach became irrelevant to the algorithm. Many new mom sharers on FB and TikTok rose and became household names in a matter of months from launching. While mine, stuck in its shell, is still contemplating whether I should leave or stay. I was a speck in a universe of mom influencers.

But the very few quiet readers made me stay. Though my numbers are insignificant to the usual crowd, my messages were heard by listening hearts. These messages echoed through the lives of others, giving a little spark in their mundane lives.

To a few, I mattered. To the rest of the internet, I was a number.

I Outgrew Who I Was

I liked this saying I heard from an inspirational speaker,

"You are under no obligation to be who you were 5 minutes ago."

And it is so true. We can change. We can evolve and be something we were not five minutes ago. And we are under no obligation to explain to others who we have become and who we want to be in the future. And I think what's holding me back from letting go of this identity as Petite Momma is nostalgia and being afraid that I am turning back to who I was.

But, no.

I am not turning back to who I was. I just outgrew it.

Staying and maintaining the social media accounts just drains me. It no longer gives me joy.

And I just have to stop.

I need to acknowledge that I have evolved. And that shutting down the FB page is my first step to accepting who I want to be in the future.

Petite Momma was there during the time I needed it. It has served its purpose for me. And now I need to let it go to serve another meaning and purposeful life that is waiting for me.

It is not about stepping away from something. It is about stepping up to another level on a ladder. Petite Momma was me, and it would always be me. But I will show up to how I want to be.

So, I have said goodbye to my FB page.

But I am keeping this website. Why?

Because here I can be fully who I am.

Here, there are no vanity metrics for me to look at and question my value.

Here, I can write the way I want, and no brand tells me otherwise.

Here, my messages can reach the ends of the earth.

Here, I can focus on myself and no longer look at how others are doing.

Here, I can filter my privacy but still be able to share my lessons.

Here, I am happy.

And so, here I am. Waiting for my life to unfold one day at a time. I am at peace. And I am ready for the next steps.

20 years ago, I avoided coffee because of it’s effect on my tummy.

10 years ago, I only drank coffee if I had to because I was with friends.

5 years ago, I didn’t think I would enjoy drinking coffee.

Now, it’s part of my daily rhythm—bittersweet, grounding, warm, just me.

The lipstick stain on the rim isn’t just a trace of color. It’s a mark of presence.

Of showing up.
Of becoming.
Ever evolving.
Expanding.
Growing.

I am no longer who I was, and there’s a new version of me in the future.

But in this moment, with pastry crumbs and caffeine warmth, I’m exactly who I need to be.

A woman who takes time for herself.

The Kids are Always Watching

Stop Trying to Calm the Storm. Calm Yourself.

𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙢. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙢 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨.

This week I experienced my first super kaba moment as a mom of a student who is in a face-to-face modality.
(If you are new here, I’m a homeschool mom)

Our eldest, who only started commuting on his own last week, got lost.

He missed his stop and traveled 7 kilometers away.

I was monitoring his location through the app. His avatar stopped near his stop and did not update, so I just thought na baka mahina ang data at baka naglalakad na sya pauwi.

When it finally moved, I was so surprised that his next location was already 4 kilometers away from his supposed stop!!!

I tried to call him, but he didn’t answer since his phone was in his bag.

By the time I was able to get a hold of him, he was so far away na.

My heart stopped. And then began beating so fast. Panic na ang nanay.

Hindi niya alam ang lugar na yun. And that place is already “delikado” for him.

But because it was loud inside the jeep, he couldn’t hear me. I was supposed to instruct him to alight at Alimall, where it’s safer than where he currently was. Pero nalaman ko, bumaba na sya ng jeep! Patay na

He is nowhere near a jeepney or bus going back to his route since one-way yung kalsada. I texted him and told him to enter a fast-food or resto where it’s safer. Buti may 7-11.

Ano, susunduin ko na ba? Mag book na ba ako ng Grab for him?

My husband assured me that it would be a great learning experience for him to figure things out. And that I should trust him.

I took a long, deep breath. Calmed my nerves and then looked at his location again.

From there, I came up with a plan.

I gave him instructions on how to get home using a different route. That would mean he has to ride 2 different jeeps and a tricycle, needs to navigate roads unfamiliar to him, tumawid sa major roads, and gather the strength to move forward.

My 14yo child was calm.

He was using technology to navigate his way back.

And after 2 hours of stress for this momma, he was home safe. He did it.

Whew.

I knew the easiest way out was for us to pick him up where he was. We could drive there in less than an hour (matrapik na din kasi) or i-book ko sya ng Grab car, but it was a learning opportunity. An opportunity to learn not only for him, but most especially for me.

If I learned to let go last week, this week I learned to trust more.

Trust more in my son’s capabilities.

Trust more in God that he is protected at all times.

Trust that my heart is capable of handling stressful situations like this.

The only way for us to calm the storm is to calm our hearts first.

Last Monday, something shifted.

Our son stepped into a whole new world-his first time in face-to-face school after years of homeschooling and online distance learning. It was also my first time to bring a child to school. When we got there, I gave him final reminders before he went inside his school building. I left the school with prayers in my heart. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

The weather had other plans.

Rain flooded the metro, traffic was horrible, and getting a ride in public transportation was a nightmare.

When the classes were suspended, he went home on his own. It was his first time to commute solo.

Thank goodness for the location sharing thru messenger, I knew exactly where he was. It took him almost 3 hours to get home. 😱

He came home drenched, tired, hungry, and with soaked shoes.

It could’ve been called a bad day.

But what I saw was growth.

His, and mine.

It was a day of firsts wrapped in soggy socks and answered prayers.

A day that tested independence, resilience, and trust.

A day that whispered, “He’s ready,” and gently reminded me that letting go is both the hardest and holiest thing we do as mothers.

We teach, we nurture, we prepare. But then comes the letting go—the part they don’t write about in parenting books. And sometimes, growth looks like flooded streets and brave little feet moving forward anyway.

In a meaningful step toward strengthening local enterprises, the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and SM Supermalls formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on July 1, 2025, at the SM Supermalls Headquarters in Pasay City.

Running at 43 in my heaviest weight ever.
UPAA Freedom Run 2025

Now that I am 43, I have started to actually like running. Walking is therapeutic for me, while running is a good dose of dopamine after pushing yourself. As of writing, I have been to two fun runs this 2025, and currently deciding which distance to take for the August or October runs.

I have not been athletic.

Not at all.

Growing up, the sports I knew were the ones I saw on the tube. The games of Ginebra vs Purefoods, Chicago Bulls, and gymnastics during the Olympics.

I did not pursue any sports. I did not enroll in any, nor did I have any interest in them. However, for some reason, I have come to realize that I need to be healthy. Thankfully, I have parents who have ensured that we were healthy, just minus the sports aspect.

As a child, I saw my father exercise every day. And now, in his 70s, he still has a flat stomach thanks to his active lifestyle. He casually reminds me to walk and exercise when we visit him. I know, I know, my waistline is not ideal for my height. Haha! And I want to impart to my kids the value of a sound mind and body.

But it has been a challenge the past few years. Since hitting the 40s, I have experienced hormonal imbalance and, yup, weight gain.

Just in the past 3 months, I actually gained 5 kilos!

Have I been eating too much? Not at all!

As much as I can, I walk at least 30 minutes a day. Plus intermittent fasting, I should be losing and not gaining weight, right?

Wrong!

Our stress levels also affect our weight. And food choices.

So I cut down some hours of my fasting (fasting is a stress din kasi sa katawan) and make sure to work around it based on my cycle. However, since I have been experiencing new perimenopausal symptoms such as missed period, it's actually harder to check if I should fast longer or not.

From Walking to Running

In 2023, I started to make time walking around. My weight at that time was still in the 46-48 kilos. I walked after lunch and after dinner. There will be days that I can only walk for 30 minutes, and there are some that I clock in an hour and a half.

In 2024, I decided to challenge myself a little bit by doing easy runs. From running in just a few seconds, I worked slowly and steadily until I could run for 5 minutes straight.

Interval pa din tayo dahil di naman tayo after masyado sa pangmalakasan, lumakas lang masaya na ako dun.

I told myself, "Maybe I could join runs, just for fun."

And I did. I registered for The Great UP Run 2024 for a 3KM distance.

There was a typhoon, and the run was cancelled by UP and the organizers. I couldn't make it to the rescheduled run, but thankfully, they offered a virtual run for those who registered. I honestly thought I could not make it to the 30-minute cutoff for the 3K distance. But lo and behold, my Strava clocked in less than 30 minutes! Yay!

A few weeks after submitting my virtual run, the organizers sent me my medal.

Milo Marathon

In March, an opportunity came for me to join the Manila leg of the Milo Marathon 2025 through a brand x-deal. I initially registered for the 5K but later on re-registered for the 3K. I felt that I was not strong enough to push with a 5K distance. The PR team told me that my registration for the 5K was already processed and could not push back for a 3K but they said they would try. When my race kit was delivered, it was for a 5K.

Even if I felt that I wasn't strong enough, I pushed with the 5K. With just over a week left, I laced my shoes and ran as much as I could. On days when I felt too tired, I continued with my wall pilates to strengthen my core and legs.

Whew! It all helped!

I was able to finish the Milo 5K run in 48:38 minutes with a pace of 9:41/km. Thank you, God!

Then, summer came, and it was exhausting to run in the heat, even at early evening. And yes, tinamad ako.

And when my run in June was closing in, I had to go back to training.

UPAA Freedom Run

The UPAA Freedom Run 2025 was held last June 29, a Sunday. When I checked the weather app, it showed cloudy during the time of the run. However, when my husband dropped me off in UP that morning, it was raining so hard, I was already wet when I got to the Start Line.

At the starting line, waiting for the gun to start. Basa na ako dito.

Daming bagets.

This run was sponsored by the UP Alumni Association, and I was hoping to see some batchmates, but I didn't. I was glad that a lot of young students and graduates joined the community for this charity run.

The rain stopped for a few minutes before the gun started. The 5K route we had was not the usual one I see on fun runs inside UP. It was refreshing to see new scenery, but... one uphill was savage! My knees were not trained for this. Haha!

While we ran, the rain started again, and by the middle of the 5K distance, it poured. POURED DOWN.

Some took shelter while people like me, who actually enjoyed the rain, continued amidst the pouring rain. I was soaked, even my undies were wet. I didn't mind getting wet, I was just worried about my phone inside my belt bag.

And when I crossed the finish line, the rain clouds slowly moved away and the sun shone. By the time I received my medal, wala nang ambon.

Total moving time was 47:41 with a pace of 9:08/km. I improved from my last 5K fun run.

Soaked at the UPAA Freedom Run

I am grateful that in my two 5K runs, I did not experience any pain during or after the race. In fact, I was able to run again within 2 days.

2025 Onwards

Anyway, it has been raining lately. I usually run in the afternoon, but I guess that would have to change now that the rainy season has arrived. It's not that I don't want to run in the rain - I actually want to, it's so much fun! - but, because I might slip or ruin my shoes and phone (I don't have a smartwatch yet).

Mabagal talaga tayo pero at least nagiimprove. Madapa man at malimot mag exercise, bumabangon naman ulet.

Sumasali naman tayo ng fun run para sumaya. Gastos nga siya eh, pero way ito para ma-push ko ang sarili ko na huwag tamarin. Nakaka inspire din kasi ang mga bagets and old people who can run marathons. Maayos pa ang tuhod ko so dapat mag push pa ako for my health.

I really want to join another fun run later this year, but I haven't registered for any yet. I am still thinking whether I should stick with the 5K distance or push myself to a 10K run. This would all boil down to whether I am willing to commit to training. What do you think?

Number 1 Tip I Learned from a Homeschool Mom

If there is one tip that I can share with fellow homeschooling parents on homeschooling, this would be it. This tip immensely helped us in our journey of homeschooling multiple kids. The advice came from a homeschool mom whom I have admired for years, and her insight came very timely when I was pregnant with our third child.

Mommy May of May Palacpac, Storyteller, is one of the OG homeschool moms I have been following for years. In fact, when I attended my first homeschool convention way back in 2014, I made sure to sit with her on the same table because, you know, I'm a big fan. So when we met up for a Christmas coffee date with other mom blogging friends in 2016, she shared with me what helped her homeschool multiple kids. She said that I should allow the kids to learn on their own. It wasn't that clear at that time because I was only homeschooling my eldest. But when the baby came, a toddler in tow, and homeschooling a Grade 1 student was happening all at once, it all made sense.

Allowing your child to learn independently may be absurd, and others may call me a lazy homeschool mom for doing so. But no, it actually makes sense. By allowing my child to learn independently, he was able to learn the habits of a lifelong learner. Aside from academics, our eldest learned how to manage his schedule and tasks, enhanced his problem-solving skills, independence, and organization. The habits also made him confident, as his self-esteem was developed by being able to do things on his own. Eventually, when he left homeschooling, we saw that the study habits he had formed over the years were evident in how he was doing in school.

How to Teach Them to Learn Independently

If your child is younger than 7, I suggest developing their reading skills first. When they can read and comprehend on their own, it will be easier for them to read their lessons. Nevertheless, we can start teaching them in the preschool years by asking them to get the books or materials from the shelves and clean up after an activity.

With our kids, we slowly transitioned them to independent learning. If I have been guiding him on a lesson for 30 minutes, our first step would be to lessen the one-on-one time with me. For example, in the next 4 weeks, we would just take 20 mins together and he'd do the rest of the time alone.

This doesn't mean I am unavailable for the whole homeschool session.

I am still there on the table, but allowing him to do his lessons and tasks on his own. By sitting there on the table with him (or at the bed or sofa - we homeschool anywhere), I can answer any questions he may have.

For subjects that require more guidance from me, we prefer to spend more time on that together rather than let them go through it independently.

For our eldest, he started doing some of his lessons independently in Grade 4. Same with our second child. And for our youngest, he prefers doing his Math lessons on his own at Grade 2, we are transitioning to independently learning for the other subjects this coming SY.

Each child is different, so as parents, it is up to us to gauge if our child is ready to learn on their own. We shouldn't rush them. There will be times when they dread doing things on their own, but have faith. They will fight against it and will crave Mama's attention. If they do, take things slower and allow them to "lambing" with you, then go and try it again. Eventually, they will learn to be lifelong learners.

Mark your calendars, voters! The May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections are just around the corner—and this year, casting your vote has never been more comfortable or accessible.

In partnership with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), SM Supermalls is rolling out the Mall Voting Program (MVP) in 20 select locations across the country. Through this initiative, eligible voters whose precincts were transferred to an SM mall can vote in a cool, spacious, and secure environment—right at the heart of their favorite shopping center.

From Independent to DepEd Accredited Homeschooling

We take homeschooling one year at a time. And after 13 years, we are still homeschooling. From homeschooling one child until all three, and now only two, we may have to stop homeschooling shortly. About the same time last year, we decided to homeschool until high school, so we transitioned from being under a DepEd-accredited homeschool provider to going independent. This move would help us in our plans. We enrolled the two kids in the US, under Homelife Academy through their local partner in the Philippines, Better Together Homeschool International. One of our kids recently expressed her desire to go to school in a traditional face-to-face setup. So this coming school year, from independent, we are going back to being accredited in Philippine homeschooling.

Why Go Back to DepEd Accreditation?

We loved being independent for its flexibility and ease of documentation. And going back to DepEd was not in my mind, well, at least after high school. But since our child wants to go to a brick-and-mortar school, we acknowledge her desires and respect her needs. Since we started this homeschool journey, the kids have always been part of the decision-making.

Now the schedule is another story. After scouting a few private schools in our area, I learned that the school schedule for Grades 4 to 6 would be from 7am to around 1-2:30 pm. That meant my child would have to be in school for at least 6 hours. My kid and I have to go up early, drive her to school amidst the traffic of the Metro, then pick her up in the afternoon.

There would have been no issue for me to wake up early since our eldest, who has transitioned to a traditional school, already has a morning class. However, our elementary child, who wants to go to school, has a hard time waking up in the morning. And I am not ready to battle with her every single day. Hahaha!

So, my solution is to find a school with a hybrid program. A few days in school and a few days at home. Online distance learning is not an option since our two younger kids don't like online classes. With a hybrid program, we can "practice" with her going to school a few times a week instead of immediately transitioning to a Monday through Friday on-site schedule.

As for our youngest, we could just leave him enrolled under the US homeschool program. But knowing him, he would go where his siblings are. So, to prepare myself for any sudden changes, I opted to move him as well from independent homeschooling to DepEd accreditation. We are also aiming for him to enter a science high school in the future, so this would be a good prep for him.

Homeschool Program and Providers We Chose

We chose homeschool providers that offer modular programs. In their programs, the school will provide all the learning materials and compute the grades of the students. The teaching part is handled by the parents.

This would be our first time to go under a modular program and let the school assess our students. For years, we have been using an open curriculum approach.

I think the modular program is a great choice since I will be greatly reducing the time and effort to prepare the lessons, grading, and portfolio. This would mean, though, that we will be following the school's learning program and have less flexibility.

However, I reckon that it is still a win-win for us. We can just add to the current curriculum. For example, our son, who is advanced in Math and Science, may find the Grade 3 curriculum boring for him, but we can add additional learning and activities for him if that's the case. Also, it would be a good adjustment for them once we move to mainstream schooling.

For our daughter, we chose St. Mark Integrated School since they have a hybrid program, which we can use in the near future. For our son, we chose Frames of Mind School for their digi-module program.

Let's see what the new school year 2025-2026 can give us. Who knows, maybe after this year we will drop homeschooling? Or maybe the kids might say, "Nah, we want to go back to the US program?" I don't know. Just taking it one year at a time.

EmpowerHer Campaign Shines Light on the Importance of Recognizing Women's Unpaid Care Work

Oxfam Pilipinas, together with the Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia and the OCI Group, has launched Asenso Squad—an inspiring online campaign that unites the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) community. Through shared experiences, the campaign brings to the forefront important conversations around breadwinning, unpaid care work, and gender equality.

This initiative is part of the larger “EmpowerHer: Embedding Gender Equality in MSME Business Practices in the Philippines” project, which aims to tackle the unequal burden of care work at home—a key factor limiting women’s economic opportunities. Supported by Investing in Women, an initiative of the Australian Government, the project encourages a more balanced sharing of caregiving responsibilities within households.

“When care work is shared equally at home, it not only lightens the load for women but also strengthens the entire family,” says Lot Felizco, Executive Director of Oxfam Pilipinas. “It opens up opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender, to grow personally and professionally.”

Felizco emphasizes that empowering women to participate more fully in economic activities creates a ripple effect: “It boosts household incomes, strengthens communities, and drives inclusive growth. But to unlock this potential, we must redistribute care work more fairly.”

The campaign kicks off with an online forum titled Family or Career, Why Not Both? Pag-usapan natin paano sumakses sa bahay at buhay. This forum explores how assigning the majority of unpaid care and domestic tasks to women often restricts their ability to seek employment or entrepreneurship opportunities—opportunities that could help lift families financially.

The Gender Gap Challenge

Recent data highlight the urgency of this conversation. In the 2024 Global Gender Gap Index, the Philippines dropped nine places to 25th, reflecting setbacks in achieving gender parity in economic participation, education, health, and political empowerment.

Specifically, the country recorded a 1.4 percentage point decrease in women’s economic participation and opportunity. It also saw declines in women's representation among legislators, senior officials, and managers, as well as in perceived wage equality.

A significant factor behind this trend? Women’s heavier share of unpaid care work. Tasks like childcare, elder care, cooking, cleaning, and other household responsibilities often default to women, limiting their time and opportunity to join or stay in the workforce.

A 2024 study by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) reflected similar findings. Only 21.9 million women (0.8% less than previous years) were actively working, compared to 30 million men (76% participation rate). The study also pointed out that marriage and childbearing typically lead to a decline in women’s labor force participation, reinforcing traditional roles where men are seen as economic providers and women as caregivers.

Oxfam Pilipinas’ earlier 2021 study further revealed that women spend an average of 6.5 hours daily on unpaid care work, three times more than men. Even young girls reportedly spend more time on chores compared to boys their age. Alarmingly, the same study found that harmful attitudes persist: some respondents accepted shouting at women or shaming men for doing housework.
