PETLOCK SCHLOCK

S.H.A.Z.A.M. (secrets revealed?)

2012-04-08T09:44:00.000-07:00

I have happily participated in a weekly comic-book-loving challenge for OZCOMICS through the Faceboook' The reeent challenge was "SHAZAM"

"SHAZAM" was the magic word a kid named Billy Batson was granted o turn into a big magic adult sized genie-type superhero called Captain Marvel. Or was ...since 1938...until recent...

Due to legal bullshits he isn't Captain Marvel any more....It's been a bullshitz for years but let's move on...

"SHAZAM" is an acronyom for...

SOLOMON: WISDOM

HERCULES: STRENGTH

ATLAS: STAMINA

ZEUS: POWER

ACHILLES: COURAGE

MERCURY: SPEED

I believe Jim Nabors said it best, as Gomer Pyle: sounded kinda like “SHA-ZAY-UM”...

Anyways.... here is a rough sketch for anyone who might be iterested ...

I initially included a rude version of Billy Batson...

Replaced rude-nes of Billy Batsoon with rude selfish signature self-ness...

Here is a nice piece of reference (souce to yoink colours from) art by C.C.Beck!

I saw this band at a small venue in London,UK, early 2001. My friend Steve Whitehouse was in town and we were just looking for something to do.We didn’t know what to expect when these two cute little Japanese girls stepped onstage and set up a drum machine with a mangy old teddy bear taped onto it.

“That must be the drummer” we all chuckled

The whole room was amused and immediately endeared.

When they started to play…WOW! We were blown away. Straight into it with an elemental force that did not let up for the whole set save for a couple pauses (with feedback) to push a button on the drum machine and prop the teddy bear up again.

Maybe it seemed bigger coming from such a petite looking trio or maybe they had Motorhead stuffed inside that teddy bear. Maybe I just dreamed the whole thing…No! Steve was there...

Sadly Yumi Yumi are no longer together.

There are very few traces of them on the web. I could only find this video with the original guitar duo…Kaori Tsuchida on lead guitar and Yumi Okamura on bass

I AM RIGHT!

and...

FUNKY JUNKY (audio only)

and...

Here is FUNKY JUNKY with visuals starring Heda from GUITAR WOLF on bass.

I read somewhere Yumi Okamura moved on to have a baby. Kaori Tsuchida is still performing with a group called “The Go! Team” lots of stuff to check out HERE ON YOU TUBE.

Will YUMI YUMI ever return? I hope so. If they do they have permission to use my artwork.

The whereabouts of the stuffed bear is unknown at the time of this writing.

This is a promotional storyboard for what was going to be a series of short rude cartoons written by a local Australian comedian. This is the watered down version after 2 revisions. If I posted the first version I would have had to put a content advisory warning on this site. The series never got picked up,too bad.

1:11am

I am officially involved in something called the Art Jumble blog...

http://artjumble.blogspot.com/

Every week they put up a challenge. They present a topic and you can generate and post a drawing that conforms to said topic. On the Art Jumble website there's a huge list of past topics you can click on and see a wide range of different styles.

This past week the topic was "Image Comics"...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Comics

They publish a daunting variety of comics which I have never read.

I chose characters from "The Maxx" by Sam Kieth.I found some images online of the Maxx and a Jungle Queen character... I don't know if there is a scenario like this in the books...I hope I didn't just give away the surprise ending...uh-oh...

BEWARE the DO-NOT!

2011-01-08T01:44:00.000-08:00

KNOW YOUR ENEMY...

This cuddly little bastard is the globular incarnation of abominable inactivity. A gremlin of sorts that will sneak up your nose and gum up your synaptic functions.Time will be distorted, minutes will seem to hang slowly while days slip right by. It's presence can also be detected by lack of any detectable change to things like web pages for extended periods.

Remedies for the elimination of such head boogers could be the utilization of random sketchbook doodles accompanied by babbling text and sippings of cheap merlot .

Don't be a DO-NOT or you'll turn into a DONUT (round and squishy outside and hollow on the inside)

PULP TATTOO: a barf history of self-publishing

2010-12-17T20:17:00.000-08:00

1992:The first incarnation of Pulp Tattoo was a mini comic. 4¼ × 5½".My buddy Mark Innes had been self-publishing them for a while so I monkey-see-monkey-did one my own self.It contained an assortment of one-page comix and some longer pieces.

Literary historians will want to take note that this issue contains first appearance of Professor Ham!

I didn't have any copies handy at the time of this writing. I found some of these images on a site in the Uk that had a copy for sale.

http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/8809062/pulp-tattoo-canadian-mini-comic

I am in no way affiliated with 'ecrater" but it was handy for them to provide some visuals I could share.

Back in them days we didn't have no fancy innernets to flog our wares.WE had to go out and trudge through mountains of slush and dead bodies to find the shops who would allow our little booklets to occupy precious shelf space.

"WHO DARES APPROACH THE ALL KNOWING ,ALL POWERFUL USED BOOKSHOP?"

All that slogging around did eventually get an unexpected result. One day, several weeks after I distributed my merchandise, I received a phone call from a reporter who was doing an article for The Toronto Sun.He found a copy of Pulp Tattoo in one of the bookshops that I was initially reluctant to venture into.

The conversation went something like this....

Voice: "Do you do Zines?"

Me: "Uh...I did a mini comic..."

Voice: "Yes,but.do you do ZINES?"

Me: "I guess you could call it a 'zine"

Voice: "Great! Can you come down to the offices tomorrow to answer some questions and do a photo shoot? Do you have anything in colour? "

Me: "uh..."

It turned out the reporter had caught wind of the local "Zine Scene" and was contriving an article about all these young self publishers aspiring to become the next Randolph Hearst or Conrad Black... When I showed up at the Sun office it was just me,the reporter and a photographer. Apparently the other members of the Zine Scene were not available until after sundown. I said "yeah" to the right questions enough to get included in the article. I really didn't think I belonged in that article since I barely knew what a zine was at the time and I had only made a very tiny contribution to "the scene".

When the article came out I was very surprised and horrified to see a full page spread mostly occupied by a colour photo of my big hairy face grinning and holding up my little comic. The photo was titled "Pulp and Pepper" and it made me look like I was the King Of All Zines. It was completely misleading. The article continued onto the next page where there was a very small black and white photo with 4 or 5 people who actually made regular contributions to the Zine Scene.

I felt pretty bad about it at the time.Even though it wasn't my fault. In the runaway part of my brain I expected the entire Zine Scene to rally against me and chase me into a windmill carrying burning copies of my unworthy un-zine.

Nothing cool like that happened though. Nothing much at all happened. A few people I knew saw the article and noted how large and hairy my face was filling the page but beyond that no more phone calls . No huge jump in sales. Not very many groupies followed me around. It all happened in a flash and life went on.

I was doing key animation on a TV series at the time.

Ultimately:it was a pretty neat thing to happen to a first time attempt at self-publishing and most importantly it did not deter me from publishing bigger things in the future...

6 ⅝" × 10 ¼" !!!

WHAT IS THE NEXT BEAST THING?

Endless interpretations of the classic monsters to be continued...

Ya gotta start somewhere...

The first image I'm putting on here is a tribute to Jack Kirby. One of my heroes. He lived next door to Frank Zappa another one of my heroes. Both those guys were outstandingly prolific. I've been spending too much time at the opposite end of that spectrum.By posting this image of Jack I hope to invoke his spirit to stand over me and kick my ass to do more of my own stuff. Stay tuned...
