You will ride local horses; they are not very tall but they are extremely strong and sturdy and perfectly fit to work in tough conditions in the desert. Riders must be fit, able to trot, canter and gallop and have experience with trail riding. Guests are allowed to take care of their own horse, giving water and food, brushing and saddling at each stop. We have a different range of horses, from easy and quiet to pretty active and highly enthusiastic.

Daily you will enjoy delicious Arabic dishes. For breakfast: eggs, cheese, hummus, olive oil & herbs (zaater), jam, cucumber, tomato, fruits, bread, tea and coffee. Lunch: dishes with chicken, vegetables and rice, or different kinds of salad and bread. Dinner: dishes like ‘sanniya’ (warm dish with vegetables, potatoes and chicken),‘maglouba’ (rice with spices and chicken or meat and vegetables), barbeque, fried fish, vegetables, kofta, always combined with fresh salads and a dessert.

Horse riding

During the program with the 4 riding days you will explore the Kharaza area, the northern part of the Wadi Rum desert with its natural rock bridges, the “mushroom”, ancient inscriptions and colorful sand dunes. You will enjoy long canters on endless sandy tracks through beautiful valleys.

During the program with the 6 riding days you will enjoy all of the above and you will also explore the protected area of Wadi Rum where you will see more impressive rock bridges, you will ride through stunning canyons and over mudflats perfect for long canters.

Delicious foods

Daily you will enjoy delicious Arabic dishes.

The author of the Rough Guide to Jordan Matthew Teller came to visit us last year, he was checking out many places all over Jordan for his new edition of the well-known travel guide. I showed him around our B&B and this is what he wrote (p299):

“Lovely little family-run B&B, opened in 2011. Four guest rooms occupy the upper floor in the newly built home of Belgian-Jordanian couple Patricia Enkels and Eid Al Hasanat (who live on the ground floor). Rooms – 2 doubles, a twin and a quad – are big, airy and comfortable, with carpets or Bedouin rugs underfoot and well-equipped ensuite bathrooms. There’s a pleasant guest lounge, as well a shaded balcony gazing out over the town; everything has that personal touch. The house stands by itself, in a peaceful location on the stony hillsides of the (unsigned) Zeitun district on the north side of Wadi Musa: call ahead for directions or a pick-up. Patricia is a charming host, keeping the place spotless, serving a generous breakfast inside or al fresco – and both she and Eid are experienced horse riders, offering excursions out into the hills. Book well ahead.”

‘Ga je nog een boek schrijven over jullie reis naar Jordanië?’, vroeg ze toen ik vertelde dat we Jordanië hadden gekozen als onze volgende bestemming.

‘Nee, dat was ik niet van plan. We gaan niet zo ver weg en ook niet zo lang. Ik moet wel iets te vertellen hebben,’ was mijn reactie.

‘Dat vind ik jammer, want Jordanië is nu echt een land waar ik nog wel eens naartoe zou willen,’ zei ze.

Het zaadje was gezaaid en bleef in mijn geheugen haken. Misschien is het wel leuk om een kleinere uitgave van mijn Wombat reisboeken te maken, mijmerde ik verder? Kleintje Wombat?

Jordanië: een verre bestemming maar toch dichtbij. Een land met een eeuwenoude geschiedenis en de daarbij behorende ruïnes. Een oase van rust in het roerige Midden-Oosten. Een land met een prima infrastructuur en vriendelijke en behulpzame mensen. Een land waar je een mooie vakantie kunt houden, voor kortere of voor langere tijd. Een land waar je vol bewondering kijkt naar de Treasury van Petra en de rauwe schoonheid van de woestijn van Wadi Rum. Een land waar enkele keren per dag een welgemeend ‘Welkom in Jordanië’ tegen de toerist wordt gezegd.

Een land om een boek over te schrijven…

Ondertussen zijn we experts geworden in het vinden van huizen in steden waar de straten geen namen en geen huisnummers hebben. We belanden bij het hoog gelegen, vierkante huis van Patricia die er direct aan komt lopen en ons hartelijk welkom heet. Ze had duidelijk naar ons uit zitten kijken. Wat een leuke stek!

Vanaf het balkon hebben we een prachtig uitzicht op de stad die aan onze voeten ligt. Een heerlijke, grote, schone kamer met vrolijke olifanten op de lakens en de slopen en een enorme badkamer waar je uit de voeten kunt.

‘Hier kan ik tenminste mijn tandenborstel zo neerleggen,’ lacht Jan.

Petra Bed & Breakfast heeft vier gastenkamers, die samen tien gasten kunnen herbergen. We besluiten ter plekke om hier een aantal nachten te blijven om zo vanaf een vaste stek een paar uitstapjes te kunnen maken. Het voelt direct erg vertrouwd.

‘Hoe doe je dat, wanneer er mensen willen komen die geen eigen vervoer hebben?’ vraag ik, aangezien deze locatie niet midden in het centrum ligt en openbaar vervoer zie ik hier niet helemaal naar toe gaan.

‘Nou, ze kunnen me altijd bellen, dan haal ik mijn gasten op. Ook heb ik een extra mobiele telefoon beschikbaar voor mijn gasten, zodat ze me altijd kunnen bereiken,’ legt ze uit.

‘s Avonds maken we kennis met haar man Eid, een echte paardenman die nergens anders zou kunnen wonen en leven dan dichtbij de woestijn.
