Um, Will You Go With Me?

Like to the store?

My 10 year old had her first exposure to dating, that is if you discount tripping a boy on a field trip to get your lips on his cheek, which I do. Last week, she came to me upset because I had driven her to school that morning instead of letting her ride the bus. Apparently, the boy she has had a crush on all year was planning to “ask her out” that morning but since her atrocious mother made her take alternate transportation, she missed out. Needless to say, she was more than a little excited to get on the bus the following day.

All day memories of my own 5th grade antics haunted me. I remembered how the girls and boys in my school would “go together” and break up like they changed favorite ice cream flavors. It was high drama for sure and as I recall it felt so real at the time. In addition, I remembered that we kissed those boys after school…

Was my baby about to go there? Hold me.

When I picked my daughter up I asked how it went and she just shook her head.

“What do you mean, no?”
“We talked about it and decided to just be friends.”

While this was more than fine with me, I was curious about the change in momentum.

“Was this your idea?”
“No, we both think that since we are such good friends and going to the same middle school next year that we don’t want things to be weird between us.”
“Oh, right, well, sure, yeah, that’s very mature of you both.”

Wow. I was speechless. How can my daughter as well as the boy she crushes on be so mature?

That remains a mystery however my hope for her childlike heart restored itself when she laid some news on me in the car this morning,

“Oh, I don’t like him anymore, Mom. I like a new boy not and I’m NOT telling you who it is…”

And yes, I am still scared.

Oh Yes, It Was Ladies Night

What happens when you get ten classy ladies and two sweet babies together for a dinner party?

Delicious food, wonderful conversation, beautifully wrapped gifts and LOTS of baby squeezing.

But it’s what happens after the young ones are soundly asleep that makes it memorable.

Break dancing.

Truth or Dare.

Some were too scared for dares.

Others weren’t and will be receiving an apology note from me.
(How did I know she would actually run around the house like that?)

My mother gave an extra-truthy answer.

“I haven’t done acid…yet.”

There were 10 pounds of sangria soaked fruit pieces that were devoured as the night progressed – a process that was helped by the game “You have to eat a piece of fruit every time you say someone’s name.”

And the next morning, more baby pictures…and lots of coffee.

Winter Birthday Dinner Party – Now With Sangria!

We had such a great time last year that tomorrow we are once again celebrating all of the winter birthdays with a Girl’s Night Dinner Party & Sleepover. This year, I have expanded the guest list to include my sweet, soon-to-be cousin in law and my mother’s twin sister, my aunt.

You School Me: Internet Etiquette

1. Should you ask someone before you tag them in a picture on facebook?
I say no unless it is a compromising photo. They can always un-tag themselves, right?

2. What the hell is up with formspring? Do you have an account? If so, why?
It looks like an anonymous online slam book forum for teens to rip each other apart. I hate to be out of touch so please fill me in if there is more to it. And there has to be.

3. Are you down with the DM thanks for following me tweet?
I find it annoying as hell…but is it the polite thing to do?

The Good, The Bad & The ‘S’ Word

The good thing about having your children home with you for three weeks during inclement weather is that you really get to stop and smell the quality time. Even if that time involves too much eating and TV watching and not enough exercise, aside from sledding and shoveling, it still ranks as high quality. Let me tell you, there was a lot of giggling. A lot.

The bad part involves a high pitched shriek you may have heard yesterday when I stepped on the scale for the first time since…well, since 2009. It ain’t good, folks. All of my snovereating, combined with a few dark moments when I was clearly was trying to comfort myself with food and whatever else I could shove into my mouth, have finally taken its toll.

I purposely did not make any resolutions this year because I was saving myself for the motivation necessary to not make empty promises. Lucky or not, the scale and my fat pants have now allowed me that motivation. Ye-freaking-haw.

And what about this blog? What kind of ghost town has this place been? I used to call myself a freelance writer, amateur photographer and over all a pretty fit (and cool) chick. Now? Not so much.

The food coma inactivity party is over, y’all, and I’ve got to get back on a schedule. So, can one make New Year’s resolutions in late February…or should I call them something else?

I’m not suggesting that it’s all he ‘S’ word’s fault but I think it can at least be partially to blame for me now being the ‘F’ word.

February 21st is the new January 1st…at least in these parts. Blarg.
