Having your dog attacked by a wild animal is a frightening experience. When two animals are engaged in a fight, it can be difficult to separate them without sustaining injuries yourself.

Depending where you live, coyotes, bobcats, bears, foxes, alligators and mountain lions are the animals that most people are concerned will attack their pets. Otters, although usually shy, non-aggressive animals, have increasingly been involved in attacks on both humans and dogs. Some of the otter attacks on dogs have been fatal. In some cases it has been thought the otter was a mother trying to protect her litter, or in other attacks the otter was rabid.

North American river otters can be found throughout the United State and Canada. Otters mainly east fish, but also eat frogs, snakes, crustaceans, and sometimes small mammals, water birds such as ducks, geese and even herons. Otters are aquatic members of the weasel family, and can look a lot like a large wet cat when they emerge from the water. Otters are usually 3 to 4 feet long and weigh up to 25 pounds. They have webbed toes, short legs and a small, flat head. In Florida, otters are usually found close by to fresh water, living in burrows, on water banks, or under the roots of trees. Otters are protected under Florida law, but can be killed if they destroy property.

In Boca Raton, Florida a woman walking her Labrador retriever and fox terrier experienced an otter attack first hand. The woman saw four otters in the water and kept walking with her two dogs. One of the otters came out of the water and viciously attacked her Lab, pulling the dog into the water. The Boca Raton resident jumped into the water to rescue her dog. The terrier also went in the water and the otter released the Lab and went after the small dog. The woman resorted to punching the otter until it released her terrier and swam away. Luckily both dogs and their owner survived the attack without serious injuries.

In 2001, an otter attack in New Port Richey, Florida resulted in the death of a 5-year-old Alaskan Eskimo. Two teenage girls watched as their dog, Mike was ferociously attacked by the otter in the backyard of their New Port Richey home. At first the girls thought the otter was just playing with their beloved pet, when suddenly the 4-foot-long otter grabbed Mike's snout with his teeth and began to drag the fluffy, white dog into the lake. As the girls screamed for help, a family friend grabbed a pole, jumped into a small boat and tried to rescue Mike. The dog was already limp and floating away. The otter showed no fear of the rescue attempt, jumped into the boat and began attacking the friend's foot. The girls stood in the backyard, hysterical as their friend kicked and jabbed the otter with a pole. The otter jumped off of the boat, swam over to Mike, grabbed the dog and glided off. The body of the dog was found on the shore of the lake a day after the attack.

dog owners should consider the possibility of attacks by wild animals on their pets and take preventative measures. Dogs should never be left outside unsupervised. Even in fenced yards, wild animals have been known to gain access and attack pets. If your dog must be left outside, consider purchasing or building an outdoor 6-sided enclosure that is made of a heavy gauge chain-link. Remove food sources from your yard, such as fallen fruit or food refuse. Do not leave pet food outside unnecessarily.

Always walk your dog on a leash. When walking your dog in areas where a wildlife attack may occur, get in the habit of carrying something with you to scare wildlife, such as, a walking stick, air horn, or umbrella, as well as something to throw such as baseballs or golf balls. If you notice a wild animal such as a coyote, or an otter, keep your dog as close to you as possible and move towards an active area. Never encourage your dog to interact or play with a wild animal. If your dog is attacked by an animal, avoid the desire to jump between the animals and pull them apart. This usually results in serious injury and the possibility of going through rabies shots. Consult your veterinarian, or dog trainer for other suggestions on how to deal with animal attacks.

Advantages can come in many forms. Looking at careers in pharmaceutical sales and careers in medicine, the thing I see personally that put them under the same umbrella is healthcare. Both careers affect healthcare, directly or indirectly. But the things that put them at different end of the line can be summed up in this sentence - demand and supply.

Let's take a look at both careers, in term of advantages, from that point of view.

Pharmaceutical Sales Are Profit Driven

It is not a mystery when a new pharmaceutical sales rep for a multinational company (MNC) got paid higher in basic salary and overall package than a new Houseman i.e. a new medical graduate. Such a high amount represents high expectation from the company. The company invests and expects higher return from the rep.

Starting off high - who would not consider that as an advantage to their career?

Flexible Working Hours

This is one thing that really makes pharmaceutical sales careers more worthwhile than any medical careers. After a decade of working in pharmaceutical industry, I have never experience a time when I was On Call. You have a number of calls to make per day but how you are going to fulfill it is totally up to you.

Chances To Bag Huge Incentive

Huge incentives can take many forms depending on companies. Some give cold hard cash, some car incentives, oversea trips, expensive watch, and some just mix everything in. I have seen cases where a sales rep brings home more incentive than total annual salary. It is not typical but possible. I could not say the same to the folks in medical line though.

More Careers Advancement Option

In medical line, a natural progression is obvious if a person works for the Government. But for a pharmaceutical sales rep job, you can always be on the look out for bigger, better opportunity in other companies provided you have gathered enough experience. You do not need to wait for your boss to retire and you probably stand a chance of getting better remuneration than he or she in due time.

Meaningful Transferable Skills

I have friends who are former Sales Rep just like me making a killing on their own. They have their own companies and they are building strong business. And I knew they learn all these while serving their former pharmaceuticals employer. If you are in medical line, such transferable skills may be available but limited. Maybe an extreme example I can call upon right off the bat is our former Prime Minister who was a General Practitioner in a small town in Kedah, Malaysia. There is no former pharmaceutical sales rep that I know of in our local cabinet line up. But I know a lot of them who are busy building up their companies.

A Liberal Playing Field

I have a medical related background and if I have a career in pharmaceutical sales it looks somewhat normal. But my other colleagues in the same company, not all of them share my kind of background. Some of them were Air steward or stewardess, law students, engineers, clerical jobs, menial jobs, veterinarian, nursing and many others.

And their chance to succeed in this career is not reduced by their background. In fact, some of them are far ahead than me in terms of position and salary remuneration. But you could not do the same in medical line. If you were not trained, you are out.

These are some obvious advantages I observed all my entire pharmaceutical career life. Some of them you might also see in your local situation but some you might not be able to so take everything listed here with a pinch of salt. My own observation is not typical but probable.

Your new, little puppy scampers playfully at your feet. He romps around in the grass giving you insurmountable joy. He is becoming an important part in your family's life. To keep your puppy happy, healthy and disease-free you will need to give him the appropriate veterinarian health care.

When a puppy is first born he is protected by his mom's antibodies from her blood and initial milk supply, known as colostrum. The first stage of your puppy's maternal antibody protection is approximately 2 days. This window of protection will only include those viruses that the mother is protected against and works according to the level of antibodies in the pup's bloodstream. There may still be a risk for infection if levels are not strong enough at that particular time. There is no rhyme or reason as to how high or low the levels may be even in different puppies of the same litter.

At six weeks of age most veterinarians will give the new puppy a combination vaccine with subsequent boosters given 3 weeks apart for sixteen weeks. This practice is done to ensure the most thorough protection for your puppy. It is recommended that the new puppy be vaccinated against rabies, canine adenovirus, distemper, Lyme disease, canine parvovirus-2, coronavirus and leptospirosis.

Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and hepatitis are classified as core vaccines and are highly effective in their intended outcomes in terms of prevention. Their length of protection is greater than one year with minimal risks to your pet. The noncore vaccinations include adenovirus-2, measles, Bordetella, Lyme disease, coronavirus and leptospirosis. Limited effectiveness is noted with these vaccinations with length of immunity and risk of side effects variable.

Your new puppy's vaccine schedule should typically be as such:

At five weeks of age your puppy should be given the parvovirus vaccination.

At six weeks of age and again at nine weeks of age your puppy should be given a vaccine consisting of distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus, cough and hepatitis combination vaccine. This type of vaccine is known as a 5-way or combination vaccination. This vaccine should be administered without the leptospirosis included. If the coronavirus is a concern for your puppy, this should also be given at this time.

Your 12-week old puppy should be given the rabies vaccination.

Between 12 and 16 weeks your puppy should be given the combination vaccination with inclusion of the leptospirosis vaccine. Your puppy should also be given the coronavirus or Lyme disease vaccines if they are a concern. A booster of this and additionally, a rabies vaccination, should also be given per your veterinarians recommendations.

Even with the proper immunizations completed there is still the possibility of your pet contracting these infections. The reasons for this are based on your pet's own bodily system and state of health of your animal. However, by making sure that your pet is immunized accordingly the chances of them contracting these infections are lowered dramatically. Consult your veterinarian for the preferred schedule of vaccination delivery and/or with any questions that you might have regarding your puppy's health.

Pomeranian dogs are what you are looking for if in case you want a small lap dog as a pet. Generally, this breed of dog have a bright personality and easy to get along with. However, they can be temperamental, commanding, and outgoing. That is why it is discouraged to have them with very young children in a house. They can snap when they are teased. On the other hand, Poms are affectionate, gentle, and loyal. Pomeranian dogs are ideal for pet lovers who live in a small house or apartment. But they can also adapt well in a wider area.

This breed is perfect for dog owners who have a small yard. Outdoor activities are okay for Poms. They may be lap dogs but do not hesitate in letting them get a good exercise. Pomeranian dogs can actually endure taking long walks since they belong to an active breed. It is easy to teach them with tricks as long as you are patient and determined enough. Looking after Pomeranian dogs requires ample time and attention from you. Their grooming requirements are quite complicated since they have two coats of fur that need special grooming. Poms have a short, fluffy undercoat and a straight topcoat.

Their coat needs to be brushed at least once a week but not too frequent because it can be damaging. In addition, Pomeranian dogs need a good dental care because they are prone to loss. That is why it is highly recommended that Poms eat dry food to help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Another distinct characteristic of Poms is that they give high value to their personal properties like food, toys, or beds. They do not want their properties to be shared with other dogs or pets. Despite of this high sense of ownership, Pomeranians are not quarrelsome dogs.

It is recommended that Pomeranian dogs be trained as early as possible. In particular, they can bark relentlessly if their barking is not controlled. They are headstrong little dogs and can become rowdy if not properly trained or disciplined. By having them trained, you can set out rules for them to follow. Your Pomeranian will show its love and appreciation to you after you have trained it well. Remember that they will not learn proper discipline if they won't be trained. Poms are said to be quite difficult to housebreak, but if you remain consistent in training them, they will eventually learn proper potty training.

This breed of dog is especially independent and they don't cling to their handlers. However, it is important that the owner is firm when he disciplines or deals with a Pomeranian. Otherwise, his dog will not listen or obey his commands. If not properly contained, Poms can be very demanding. Pomeranian dogs are ideal for people who desire to take care of small dogs. Poms are considered to be kind hearted pets that can easily adapt in your household. Poms are excellent little dogs. They may be fox-like in appearance but they are affectionate. If you are thinking of owning a dog, just make sure that you familiarize your self with all the information about the dog breed.

It will help you know what are to expect from your chosen breed.

Ever wonder how internet marketers become so successful? You see them all over the web and you think, “Wow! These guys are really getting things done, I wonder how?”. One of the answers is that they have mastered the art of keyword optimization. And make no mistake, it IS an artform, as you will soon see!

What is keyword optimization?

When a person opens up a search engine on their browser, they type in what they're searching for, let's say, dog leashes. The search engine then does a lighting fast search to find websites with the words 'dog leashes' in them. The search engine lists these websites in order of their keyword position, that is, which website has the most relevant information in relation to the keywords.

Let's say you sell pet products. As the advertiser, you want the searchers to land on your website as many times as possible. In order for this to happen, you increase your chances of having many people visit your site and spend money if your site pops up on a search. Optimally, it's best to be in the top ten positions on any search.

Now, the next question begs, “What is the best way to get a top ten position in a potential customer's search?”. Well, this is where keyword optimization starts.

In setting up your pet products website or other marketing methods such as PPC, one of the options you have is to choose keywords that are most relevant to your website. For pet supplies, you might choose: leashes, pet food, aquariums, grooming, etc.. But it can go much deeper.

It's important to know where to look to find relevant keywords for potential customers to search. There are many free tools available for you to use. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are two of the major search engines that offer this service. Using algorithms, they assess advertiser competition and general keyword usage by each web searcher on their respective site. They provide useful data for you the advertiser to use to maximize your knowledge of who's searching for what. Poke around on these sites and learn these useful systems.

It gets very deep when you learn that keywords like, discount turtle food, exotic birds, ferret supplies, or lizard boutiques could be very useful tags (well, except for lizard boutiques!) for your website or ad campaign. You'll find on these free keyword tools that the lists are endless when it comes to relevant keywords, no matter how specialized the niche!

The general rule of thumb to the number of keywords to use is about 20 - 30 words or phrases for your page. You can narrow down this list considerably if you use the information above and find out which are the most useful to you and your business.

Do your own digging to find out how to maximize your exposure with keyword optimization. The difference between knowing and not knowing can make or break your advertising effort.

So how can border collie dog training affect the behavior of your border collie? Most owners definitely know the importance of training in their dog's life. In human world, dog training is just like sending the kids to school to learn what he is supposed to learn in order to become a better person.

Border collie dog training is important not only to make pets obey certain commands such as sit, stay, down and others. It is also a great tool in helping your dog prevent behavior problems such as aggression, barking, biting, chewing and digging.

Aggression Aggression is one of the most common behavior problems affecting dogs. This may result not only to growling but also biting. Based on health authorities report, more than one million people are bitten each year half of it are children usually under ten years of age. Fortunately, this number of dog bite cases can be decreased provided owners are responsible enough to train their pets. Socialization should begin as early as possible - around three weeks of age would be enough. This period is the best time to introduce puppies to social investigation and playful fighting. They should be brought to their new homes at seven to eight weeks of age but must be handled gently by adults and children.

Barking Dogs have natural instinct to bark. It is their way to warn their family of what they perceive as danger. However, if the barking is starting to annoy you and your neighbors, then it is not natural anymore. Determine what are the reasons for his excessive barking and find ways to deal with it. If he is alone outside and yet barks excessively even in the broad daylight, then perhaps he is scared and doesn't want to be alone. You may want to take him inside to stop him from barking too much. Train your dog not to bark on people who will be coming into your house regularly - mailman, delivery man and so on.

Chewing Now this one is another story. While excessive barking can be disturbing to you and your neighbors, chewing is not just disturbing but most of all, destructive. Would you want to come home to a house with chewed rugs or furniture? Would you want to see your expensive shoes with missing heels? Worry not because chewing problem can be prevented. Anything with your scent on it should be kept out of your dog's reach - shoes, socks, clothes, etc. These things are the things you don't want destroyed, right? So better keep them safe - even the old ones. You may also want to make his chew toys as appealing as possible. Rub something tasty on the outside of his toys or leave chew toy in the laundry hamper for a day or so before giving it to him. There are various types of toys in the market and purchasing th right one can be a daunting task. Just remember that safety should come first before anything else.

These bad behaviors, when prevented, will definitely lead you to a problem-free border collie everybody loves to be around.

Border collie dog training can be done through various training methods. It could be positive reinforcement, training based on corrections and sometimes, training based on punishment. While positive reinforcement is commonly used by owners or handlers during border collie dog training, the training tools they are using come in various kinds.

Collars. A dog collar is a piece of material placed around a dog's neck. While some consider it as fashion, the main purpose of collar is for control and identification. Tags containing identification and medical information are often attached on dog collars. What makes a dog collar the number one border collie dog training tool is it's usefulness in controlling a dog manually. A dog collar is often used with a leash.

Different types of training collars include flat collars, slip collars (also called choke chains, slip chains or choke collars), prong collars (also called pinch collars), martingale collars and electronic collars (also called remote training collars, e-collars or hunting collars).

Dog Treat. Perhaps you would do anything to get that to-die-for pair of shoes displayed in your favorite shopping mall, right? The same is true to dogs. However, they need no expensive shoes neither luxurious crate in order to make them obey your commands - food treat would be enough. But just make sure that the treats are appetizing and not dried out, bland or crumbly.

Dog Toys. Dog toys are like dog treats. They are ideal tools to entice a dog to do something at your command. But due to so many types of dog toys, choosing the one that is right for your dog can be quite challenging. There are chew toys, fetch toys, plush and stuffed toys, rope toys, kongs and interactive toys. Just keep in mind that when choosing for toys, safety and functionality come first. Design and color are second.

Dog Crate. Dog crates are not cages. A crate should not be used to punish or confine a dog every time he does something wrong. It should serve as his den - a small, cozy place he can call his own wherein your pet can feel safe and secure. As much as it is considered as a dog's comfort zone, the crate can also make border collie dog training easy, especially housebreaking. Apart from that, traveling is easier and safer both for you and your pet when he's in crate.

If you haven't got those tools yet, it's time to make a move. Get those stuff for successful border collie dog training.

Before you get your dog, remember that you must make a commitment that will probably last more than a decade. Make sure you are willing to bear responsibility and take on the cost that having a dog entails.

Not only the initial cost, remember that a dog could live up to 15 years or even longer. That's a long time to be paying for things like:
- Dog Food
- Ongoing preventative medical treatment such as flea prevention, worming, vaccinations
- Kennelling when you go on holidays
- Training Classes
- Toys and playthings
- The major vet bill just when you don't need it

Space and Ordinates

Consider the space you have available and your local ordinances when you are considering whether to get a dog, and what kind of dog.

Research the different dog breeds you are considering. A small dog may fit into an apartment but it may require huge amounts of exercise. A large dog may fit quite comfortably inside that same apartment because they seldom indulge in racing around. Think smell too. A really big dog living in a small home can make your home smell like a vet clinic at the end of a busy, hot day.

Be realistic about your plans and be willing to compromise.

Dog-related laws vary from place to place. Be sure you are familiar with the local ordinances before the purchase.

What Sex?

There are generalities about male and female dogs, but individuals vary. And neutering pretty much levels the playing field when it comes to sex.

We all have our preferences. There is no “better” or “worse” between the sexes, but there are distinct differences in their behavior.

Female Dogs are:
- Easier to train
- Easier to housetrain
- More demanding of affection

Male Dogs are:
- More likely to be more aggressive with other dogs
- More dominant
- More active
- More destructive

There are no differences between male and female dogs in these aspects:
- Watchdog barking
- Playfulness
- Excitability
- Neutering almost always eliminates sexual drawbacks without inhibiting the attractions of that sex

Puppy or Adult Dog?

Adults and puppies each have their advantages. So do purebreds and crossbred dogs. Think hard about what your family is really expecting from a dog, and make your decision accordingly.

Puppies are like putty in your hands, ready to be moulded to you and your family's lifestyle. Your dog will have fewer behaviorial problems if you acquire it when it is about 8 weeks old and raise it in its own unique environment.

Adult dogs are probably already house-trained. Many adult dogs already have an understanding of basic doggy obedience. Costs of purchase, training, and neutering have been met.

The advantages and disadvantages of getting a puppy, rather than an adult dog, should be weighed carefully before deciding.

Purebred or Mut?

If you are buying your dog from a breeder, look for breeders who are clearly devoted to the breed. Responsible, reliable breeders will ask you lots of questions about your suitability as a dog owner. That's a good sign!

If you are thinking purebred, its best to know why a dog looks the way it does. That gives you good clues about how it behaves. The advantage of a purebred dog is that you are getting and individual bred for a particular size and temperament. Meet the breeder, if he asks as many questions about you as you ask about the dog - he is a reliable breeder.

Avoid Pet Shops. It is extremely rare for reliable breeders to sell their dogs through pet shops. Unreliable breeders - the people you do not want to do business with - sell their pups this way.

If you are thinking mutt, and thinking puppy, it can be difficult to guess what size they grow to. Puppies can grow to 4 times their mother's size. It can also be difficult to guess what type of personality traits an individual dog has inherited. A possible advantage of the mutt is that they can be hardier and healthier than a pure-bred.

It is a good idea to adopt a dog from a shelter or a rescue organization. Just make sure you learn as much as possible about the dog before you bring him home. Remember, you may be saving their life.

Plan, plan and plan. It IS a very big decision but the rewards are worth it.
