Certificates requirements:

PetsVentura® requires current and valid Rabies vaccinations for all pets traveling international and domestic. Rabies certificate MUST have veterinarian signature. We also require a certificate showing pets are current on ALL vaccinations. Be sure proper information is recorded on the Health Certificate. Keep all health certificates under 10 (ten) days old at time of starting travel. Rabies vaccination needs to be at least 30 days old and less than one (1) year. ALL paperwork needs to be originals! NO faxes or copies! ALL paperwork needs to contain original signatures. ALL signatures must, must be in ink with no stamps.

PetsVentura Veterinary Housecalls provide pet owners many of the same services found in stationary practices. It is in the delivery of those services that housecalls differ. Seeing animals in their home environment allows the doctor to better understand the overall lifestyle of the pet, such as the interactivity between other human family members and the pet.

Cats often find the home visit less upsetting than going to a stationary practice. Cats, for example, can become very stressed by traveling in a carrier, sitting in the waiting room, and being seen in an exam room. Often these cats are calmer and do better being seen in the home.

PetsVentura Veterinary Housecalls benefit dogs as well; especially large dogs or ones with painful conditions, such as arthritis, as getting into and out of the car can be difficult. Dog owners are familiar with the need to maintain constant control over the dog while in the standard practice and the stress the wait to be called can cause. During the housecall the dog needs to be on lead, or restrained, only during the actual exam or treatment. During other portions of the appointment the dog can be unrestrained in it own environment and the pet owner is free to concentrate on discussion with the doctor.

Multi-pet housecalls can have all pets seen during one appointment, reducing the time and energy needed to transport pets to multiple appointments. In addition housecalls help to free up time by allowing the owner to do things around the home while waiting for the doctor to arrive. That load of laundry does not have to wait or dinner can be started. Housecalls can often be easier on pet owners with disabilities and can allow for a more inclusive medical consultation.

Housecalls are especially beneficial when the time has come to help pets move on. Many pet owners have found home-based euthanasia to be the gentlest and most humane option. While nothing can stop the pain of losing a pet, a veterinarian housecall can help to provide a less stressful ending for both the pet and the owner.

Dog Fear of Strangers

Fear of strangers is a situation that is very serious and should be treated with behavior modification. While you are treating his behavior, it is imperative that you manage him around strangers . Every time he is exposed to the fearful situation, the behavior becomes deeper ingrained and will be harder to modify; along with being risky and absolute unfair to your dog.

In order to modify a fearful dog’s behavior, you have to change your dog’s emotional response to the scary situations. You are changing your dog’s fear response to a positive response when the stranger approaches. This is done through a slow process of systematic desensitization and counter.

Each person has their comfort zone. Once someone violates our comfort zone, our body language changes, we back away, put our hands up, warn the other person to back up and if all of those warning are ignored, we will either retreat or make the other person retreat with violence.

Now imagine, every time someone entered your comfort zone and when you started giving off your warnings, your friend poked you in the arm and forced you to stand there and be nice when all you want to do is get away. You certainly don’t feel that things are fine, you feel threatened! If this is repeated often, one or more of the following will happen, you will drop your warning system altogether and just go to violence, your zone will get bigger and bigger and you will start to feel threatened unless the person is farther and farther away, you will start to avoid your friend, you won’t trust your friend any longer, or you will lash out at your friend.

This situation is very similar to dogs that have a fear of strangers, or any stimuli that is scary to the dog. I constantly see and hear about people forcing their fearful dogs to interact with strangers and/or punishing them for growling at the stranger. As in the above scenario, the well meaning owner is playing the role of the friend - causing the dog more psychological suffering, increasing aggression, and teaching the dog that their owner is not to be trusted.

First, you need to realize that your dog’s growl is a warning to you and everyone around that he is uncomfortable with the situation he finds himself in.

Your job as his protector and friend is to help him feel safe!

Listen to him when he is clearly telling you he is uncomfortable and remove him from the situation in his time of need. Do not let strangers approach him, even if they insist! Dogs that are pushed past their comfort zone will bite.

Usually your dog’s growl is not his first sign of being uneasy. Learning and paying attention to your dog’s body language should be something you do so often it becomes second nature.

When a stranger approaches, your fearful dog has two options:

Retreat or make the stranger retreat!

So, if you have a fearful dog, the bottom line is — hire a professional trainer and address the situation sooner rather than later. Be sure the trainer use positive reinforcement methods and choose one that you have a connection with or whose methods you feel most comfortable with. With some work and commitment you can change your dog’s fear response to a happy .

The customs authority in Argentina introduced a new customs fee (MZC) effective February 1, 2012 for all shipments into, through, and out of Argentina.

Effective April 1, 2012, Cargo airlinea will have a miscellaneous charge of $25 USD or its equivalent to all air waybills for shipments originating, transiting or terminating in Argentina (eg. EZE).

Pet in cargo hold

When you send your pet by cargo flight you might wounder where the kennel is placed at the airplane.

I attached to this short note a picture to demonstrate the place in cargo hold. All kennels are secured in an area designated for live animals, away from the other baggage and cargo. Kennels are either strapped down individually or otherwise secured with tarp or netting.

The air in the cargo hold is the exact same pressurized, temperature-controlled air that circulates throughout the main cabin. But because the multitude of human bodies sitting together generates added warmth in the more insulated main cabin, the air is always cooler in cargo. To remedy this, most aircrafts have a “high/low” switch in the cockpit that sends additional warm air to cargo, which the pilot sets to “high” whenever there are live animals below. One pilot states that on a Boeing 777, the cargo air averages about 18°C (64.4° F) with the switch set to high, but can drop to below 10 °C (50°F) if mistakenly left on the low setting.

To help prevent such an accident, all pilots are informed on their load manifest when there are live animals “in the pit.” For caution’s sake, it would be wise to ask your flight attendant to confirm the pilot has “flipped the switch” and is aware of your precious cargo below!

BAA has warned that passengers flying into London Heathrow airport may be delayed up to 12 hours on Wednesday November 30 when its border staff strike over pensions.

The airport operator has asked airlines to restrict the number of passengers arriving at the airport in a bid to limit overcrowding. A number of airlines have responded by cancelling flights and reducing capacity. It is expected that Heathrow, which handles an average 180,000 passengers a day, will operate only 50 per cent of its usual flights during the 24-hour walkout over reforms that will make them work longer and pay more for their pensions, part of a raft of austerity measures imposed by the British government.

A dog or a cat enter into Argentina requires to be vaccinated against rabies.

Please note that the vaccine must be valid for one (1) year ONLY!

Veterinarians in the United States occasionally use rabies vaccines that are valid for three (3) years. If a cat/dog was vaccinated with such a vaccine in the United States more than twelve (12) months ago, the vaccination will not be considered valid in Argentina.

If your pet vaccinated with three years validity it is mandatory to re-vaccinate with a rabies vaccine that is valid for one (1) year prior to bringing it to Argentina.The re-vaccination is not unsafe to the animal.

If you’ve traveled on an airplane with your pet in the past, you know what an unpleasant experience it can be for your beloved furry friend. In most situations, pets are relegated to the cargo area of a plane, where they’re kept in small cages and situated haphazardly in a cramped area with luggage and other caged animals. Flying can be a very terrifying experience for your pet. If you have a small pet, you may be able to keep it in a small cage under your seat. But the hustle and bustle of a crowded airplane can still be a very unpleasant experience for your pet, especially if they can’t see you from their place under your seat. If you are looking for a much more pleasant way for your pet to fly with you, consider an air charter service that will allow your pet to feel considerably more safe and secure while in flight.

Air charter services allow you to rent out jets called “jet charters.” If you need to travel with your pet, a jet charter is an excellent option. It provides a much more comfortable environment for you and your pet. On a jet charter, your animal is allowed to fly beside you on the plane, no matter what its size is. Import of cats and dogs to Australia from Ireland via UK

November 9, 2011 The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) would like to draw your attention to the issue of cats and dogs from the Republic of Ireland (Ireland) being imported to Australia via the United Kingdom (UK).

Following correspondence with the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), AQIS can confirm that it is not possible for pets resident in and prepared for export from Ireland to have Veterinary Certificate B signed and endorsed in the UK by an Official Government Veterinarian from DEFRA.

AQIS will consider allowing cats and dogs from third countries to enter Australia via the UK if they meet the following requirements:

1.      The country of export, as listed on the AQIS import permit application, must be the country whose government authority is performing final sign-off and endorsement of the animal’s health certification e.g. Veterinary Certificate A and B of the import permit. Veterinary Certificate A and B must be completed in the same country.

2.      If the animal has visited any other countries in the six months prior to import, an application for a Certificate of Equivalence for residency must be submitted to AQIS. Note that the animal must be prepared for import according to the highest risk country it has visited in that six month period. Animals that have visited any AQIS non-approved countries are not eligible for entry into Australia without having performed six months residency in an approved country.

3.      Cats and dogs being imported to Australia must meet the conditions of their import permits, and any other AQIS requirements, in full. This includes completion and full sign-off of the AQIS import permit. It is the exporter’s responsibility to ensure that the exporting government authority is prepared to sign-off and endorse preparations done in another country.

4.      For an animal to trans-ship in the UK, it must fly into the UK (Heathrow) and have a trans-shipment permit completed by a DEFRA Official Veterinarian. An animal is not considered to be trans-shipping in the UK if it enters via boat/road or any airport other than Heathrow.

Failure to meet AQIS requirements is a serious non-compliance and breach of Australian import conditions. Four animals recently imported to Australia have been denied entry and are being exported from Australia because they have not met the requirements outlined above.
