A short review of the 10th anniversary by our friend Adrienne Jones.

Event of the Week: 10 Year Anniversary Show
Recording Studio Promotes Local Talent with Anniversary Show

A good lookin' guy singing his heart out.

The music industry is a notoriously tough business. If showcasing your talents to the most people possible is your goal, then having the right people around you is imperative. Mark Pezzelato works hard to be the right person to help fledgling music professionals realize their dreams. His Pezmosis Music Productions celebrated its tenth anniversary on November 30 with a music and art showcase created to promote the talented artists he’s worked with over the years.

Pezzelato organized and ran the event, which was held at Richmond Hill Theatre in Richmond Hill, ON. The show featured performances from six different bands, while over 300 pieces of art were on display from local visual artists.

Pezmosis was founded by Pezzelato in 2003. The Loyalist College Ontario graduate is a musician in his own right and has performed in more than 600 live shows. His Oak Ridges, ON facility strives to “provide top quality realistic audio, while collaborating on your ideas, for the best possible recording.” Pezmosis offers a myriad of services, including recording, mixing, mastering, sound FX, on-line retail of band music and merchandise, voice-overs, location sound and recording, and digital re-mastering.

Darryl Bradley showing off his bass face during the BS101 set.

Pezzelato even manages one of the bands that played at his anniversary show, BS101. With their music in the mode of Frank Zappa, they describe their sound as “heavy funk comedy” and have released four albums. Their latest release, Return of the Burn made its debut at the show.

Also among the lineup for the night was Fatality, a Toronto based thrash metal group that recently released their sophomore album. Known for “wild, riotous live performances and their peerless work ethic,” the “modern thrash monsters” have created a more mature record “with more complex arrangements and sophisticated concepts that still retains their trademark energy and commitment to drunken mayhem.”

A piece of art by the ever-talented Marcus Lamoureux.

Of the art display that accompanied the musical performances, Pezzelato says that, “seeing all the great artwork was incredible. We have lots of talented people.” He promoted the show with television interviews, word of mouth, social media, email campaigns and newspaper notices, and believes the most effective methods were word of mouth and email campaigns.

As far as planning shows such as his goes, Pezzelato feels that the most important aspect is to “stay organized. A lot of thinking and planning was involved,” he adds. “It’s important to write out your ideas” so all possible plans can be thought through.

333 Works of Art. 6 Genres of Music.

1 Unforgettable Evening.

On November 30, 2003, a small recording studio opened its doors. 10 years later, Pezmosis Music Productions has grown into something no one could have expected, and founder Mark Pezzelato couldn’t be happier. On Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 6 to 10 pm at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, a show is being held to celebrate this monumental event. Not only will there be a diverse lineup of bands spanning 6 separate genres of music, artist Marcus Lamoureux will be showcasing 333 mind-blowing pieces of art created by none other than his own hands. On top of that, two other local artists, Tiffany Folmeg and Anali Ssidd will be presenting some of their pieces of art.

Tickets can be bought in advance for $10 a piece, or for $15 at the door.

Musical Artists:

The year was 2230 A.D. Our galaxy had been over taken by STD’s. Our heroes, Bad Songwriting One Hundred and One, were given a mission from Mr. Universe himself. The heavy funk comedy band was to travel back in time, armed with musical torpedoes, to save planet Earth.

With an all hits, no shits attitude, BS101 has given birth to 4 full length albums entitled “Satan Has Us By The Left Testicle and We Like It”, “Bee Ass Won Oh Juan”, “Live in Budakon Japan”, and the forthcoming “Return of the Burn”, which is to be released at this very show.

Join BS101 for an explosive celebration of musical comedy as they battle their arch nemesis, the evil sorceress Chlamydia, here and now in the twenty first century.

Toronto, Canada’s high-energy, modern thrash monsters Fatality have been cranking out wise-cracking, beer-drenched nightmares together since 2003. Known for their wild, riotous live performances and their peerless work ethic, they have been independently booking and promoting their own shows, creating great merch, touring North America, and making some great tunes along the way. Few bands embody the DIY spirit as fully as Fatality consistently do, and no other bands have as much fun working their asses off.

Working in various mediums within the visual art field, Tiffany Folmeg has an absolute admiration for the natural world and low-tech processes. She has found that working with traditional techniques allows almost a level of meditation and self-exploration. Primarily focusing on stone and woodblock carving for this show, Tiffany also recognizes the significance of photography in her practice, which plays a large part in the exploration. Having just returned from travelling and teaching in Australasia, she hopes to bring back her inspiration by encouraging people to follow their ambitions by believing in themselves.

DAVE WILKINSON – ON THE RUN

After working with Dave Wilkinson on and off for the past month or so, we are finally mastering his rockin’ demo songs. Today we have been working on Feed My Mind, She Walks Away, and On The Run (On The Run MP3 at the top of the page). These are first 3 finished songs out of the 9 song demo tape.

The vocals were the focus today as we changed a lot of the backing vocals to make them blend in better. Basically minor changes to tighten it up a bit as well as some reverb and delay to give it some kick. I was impressed at how tight the songs were sounding by the end of all the mixing. The session today has inspired to finish up and tighten some of my own songs when I get home.

Everything went smoothly today and hopefully will continue to until we are done the Dave Wilkinson project. Stay tuned for more sample tracks from Dave Wilkinson and we’ll keep you posted on the demo details and more.

Helping Carmela Marzilli set up some electronics for her home.

Today Mark and I went to visit Carmela Marzilli to help her set up her new television and speakers. I arrived as the speakers were just about set up so I just watched. I helped with the T.V. At first there were some issues with some dead wires but eventually we figured it out and had it up and running in no time.

Before today I was oblivious to what all the different boxes were for in a speaker system. Mark showed me and told me a little bit about how there is one reciever that operates the CD player, the radio, and cassette tape player. After that I screwed in some hinges for the door the T.V is on, allowing it to be angled for watching it at the dinner table and what not. What a great idea.

Now back in the studio I have just been tidying it up and keeping everything in order for the next recording day. I’m looking forward to helping out with some more recording in the near future.

A fun day in the studio listening to some rockin' vocal work be done.

Today in the studio, we are tracking some vocals with Dave Wilkinson for his currently unnamed band. Now, tracking vocals is more complicated than it seems. Vocals require precision timing and accurate note hits. It’s straight forward but constantly doing take after take after take to get that perfect stretch of vocals is exhausting. Then theres the harmonies that require the precision timing and notes to get that sweet hum. And thats just for one part.

I’m impressed how much Dave is able to sing without taking a break. I know when I sing I just hit record and run through it then toss a couple harmonies over it and I’m done. But theres quite a huge sound difference when you get the harmonies precise and even add third harmonies. Dave seems to just make up harmonies as he goes and they sound great. I can tell he has been singing for awhile. Also there is minimal “studio magic” done to change the vocals. This gives it a more raw and rockin’ feel.

The style of the music reminds me of a mix between the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Foo Fighters. It’s good to hear that music like this is still being made. There are catchy hooks, heavy drums, and sweet guitar riffs. Everything a rock song needs.

My first time watching songs being created in the studio. It was a blast.

Yesterday in the studio I had a first-hand experience watching guitar tracks be put together for a few songs with Adam Tobe, Dave Wilkinson, and of course, Mark Pezzelato. It was interesting to see how much more there is to the song than what you actually notice by ear. The guitar parts were also not planned out before the session, so when they were laid down it was some musical magic. With my songs I like to do minimal tracks but I learned that the little things make a big difference.

I was impressed at how the guys would all contribute their individual ideas and still make it fit well all together. It seemed like every idea they came up with for the guitar would add to the Rock n’ Roll feel of the song. One of the coolest parts was when Adam improvised a solo and nailed it on the first take. As a guitar player it inspired me to experiment more with improvising guitar parts.

At home I have a small setup for recording where my Schecter guitar goes through a Digitech pedal and directly into my laptop. With my setup I get a decent sound for a decent price, but it doesn’t even compare to the sound quality and tone of the guitar here. Just from watching and helping setup, I learned a lot, like how it takes a trained ear and the perfect balance of tones to get a good sound out of the guitar. I hope to see more of these recording sessions and to continue learning how I can improve my own setup.

Vanek new music video entitled I AM HERE. This is the title track from the new album coming summer 2012. Enjoy the video! Here are the lyrics:

Here I am. Skin and bones.

Till I leave, what I call home.

Few regrets, can’t complain.

Who am I and what’s my name?

What’s my name?

What’s my name? I am.

I am light, born and free.

No such thing, compares to me.

I am here, I am great.

What we think is what we create.

What we create.

What’s my name? I am here.

What’s my name? I am here.

Like the stars, burning bright.

Like the sun, coming out at night.

Like the mountains, tall and strong.

I’ll be here, but not for long.

Not for long. Not for long.
