PGPD Investigating Fatal Shooting in Suitland

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively working to determine the circumstances of a fatal shooting inside of an apartment early this morning in Suitland. The decedent is 23-year-old Dwight Young of Suitland.

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 2:45 am, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3500 block of Terrace Drive. Young was transported to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. He died of his injuries a short time later.

All parties involved in this shooting have been identified. They are known to each other. Investigators are actively conducting interviews and analyzing evidence. Detectives are also in consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding any charges in this case.

PGPD Charges Suspect With 66 Offenses Stemming from Violent Crime Spree; Off-Duty PGPD Officer Pivotal in Arresting Suspect

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Gun Crimes Unit charged a man with 66 offenses in connection with a violent crime spree on Friday afternoon. The suspect is 68-year-old Larry James Simpson of Glen Burnie. Additional charges against him maybe pending.

Simpson committed multiple shootings and carjackings at five locations across the northern portion of Prince George’s County. An off-duty Prince George’s County Police Officer, who was driving his personal vehicle and was unarmed, observed one of the carjackings and began to track the suspect. The officer called his wife, also a PGPD officer, who transmitted the suspect’s location in real time to officers and partner law enforcement agencies across the county, ultimately leading to his arrest.

Based upon the initial investigation, here is a preliminary timeline of the incidents linked to Simpson:

On May 15, 2026, at approximately 2:30 pm, officers received a call for a man pointing a long gun out of his car window in the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park. Witnesses reported the man fired several shots. No one was reported injured.

A short time later, Simpson shot at a car with a 64-year-old man inside on Riverdale Road at the BW Parkway in Riverdale. A round struck the car’s window, causing the victim to suffer lacerations to his head. He was not struck by the gunfire. He was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Minutes later, Simpson’s car struck another vehicle at 67^th Avenue at Patterson Street in Riverdale. This collision caused the suspect’s car to overturn. Simpson exited his car and carjacked a Nissan at this location. During the carjacking, Simpson shot at at least four victims. One man was struck by the gunfire and was critically injured. At this time, the victim is expected to survive his injuries.

Several minutes later, Simpson shot at a woman and carjacked her Toyota at Kenilworth Avenue and Good Luck Road in Riverdale. The victim was not injured.

Finally, Simpson attempted to carjack a Honda in the 9000 block of Edmonston Road in Greenbelt. At this location, Simpson shot in the direction of the off-duty PGPD officer who was pursuing the suspect in his personal car. The officer was not struck. With the assistance of three United States Park Police Officers, Simpson was taken into custody. An AR-15 style rifle was recovered at this scene.

Simpson was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries believed to have occurred during the car crash in Riverdale. He has since been released and is in the custody of the Department of Corrections. Simpson is currently charged with 16 counts of attempted first degree murder, 16 counts of attempted second degree murder and related charges.

This remains an active investigation. Detectives would like to speak to witnesses with information relevant to this case as well as hear from any additional victims.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in finding a missing child. She is identified as 12-year-old Mariela Nieto-Rivera. Mariela was last seen on May 15, 2026, at approximately 5:30 am in the 2100 block of Guilford Road in Hyattsville.

Mariela is approximately 5'2" tall and 120 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and black hat.

PGPD Charges Suspect in Domestic-Related Fatal Stabbing in Cheverly

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit charged a son with murdering his mother on Tuesday. The suspect is 54-year-old Darrick Alston of Cheverly. He’s charged with fatally stabbing 80-year-old Brenda Wheeler of Cheverly.

On May 12, 2026, at approximately 9:10 am, officers with the Cheverly Police Department were called to a domestic dispute inside of a home in the 6200 block of Monroe Street in the town of Cheverly. The officers located the victim inside suffering from stab wounds. She died at the scene. Officers took her son into custody at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed Alston stabbed his mother during an argument. He is charged with first and second degree murder. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates all homicides that occur in the town of Cheverly.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Crash in Accokeek

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating Friday’s fatal crash involving a school bus in Accokeek. The deceased driver is 23-year-old Dequan Gravely of Bryans Road, MD.

On May 8, 2026, at approximately 7:20 am, officers responded to Indian Head Highway and Pine Drive for a reported collision involving three vehicles.

The preliminary investigation revealed Gravely was heading northbound on Indian Head Highway approaching Pine Drive. The involved Prince George’s County Schools bus was turning left from southbound Indian Head Highway onto Pine Drive. For reasons now under investigation, Gravely’s car and the bus collided in the intersection, causing the bus to flip onto its side. Preliminarily, investigators believe debris from that collision damaged a third vehicle. Gravely died at the scene. The bus driver suffered injuries not considered life-threatening. The third driver declined medical attention.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Stabbing in Suitland

Detectives with the Homicide Unit are investigating a recent fatal stabbing in Suitland. The victim is 17-year-old Amari Clarke of Suitland. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

On May 8, 2026, at approximately 12:20 pm, officers responded to the 3800 block of St. Barnabas Road. Clarke was located suffering from a stab wound(s). He died a short time later at a hospital.

Detectives are working to identify a suspect(s) and determine a motive. Preliminarily, detectives do not believe this was a random crime.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Crash in Fort Washington

5/1/26 UPDATE: The deceased driver in Wednesday’s fatal collision has been identified as 28-year-old Juan McMillan of Washington, D.C.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating the circumstances of a fatal crash in Fort Washington late Wednesday night. The name of the deceased driver, an adult male, will be released once his family is notified.

On April 29, 2026, at approximately 10:05 pm, officers were dispatched to a business in the 11900 block of Livingston Road for the report of a theft in progress involving two male suspects. A responding officer encountered the two suspects leaving the store, prior to the suspects speeding out of the parking lot. Not long after, the suspect vehicle crashed on Indian Head Highway near Palmer Road. The initial officer, who was driving an unmarked police cruiser, had been travelling behind the suspect’s car in order to obtain the license plate number. The officer did not have his lights or sirens activated and no pursuit occurred.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, an adult male, was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The PGPD contacted the Maryland Attorney General Office’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) regarding this collision. Based upon the preliminary investigation, at this time, the IID has declined to investigate the incident.

In addition, detectives are investigating the organized retail theft that occurred at the business prior to the crash.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Shooting in Temple Hills

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal shooting at a park in Temple Hills. The victim is 38-year-old Juanita Frazier of Washington, DC. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

On April 28, 2026, at approximately 10:15 pm, officers with Maryland-National Capital Park Police - Prince George’s County Division and the PGPD responded to Oxon Run Community Park for the report of an unresponsive woman. The victim, Frazier, was located in a parking lot suffering from a gunshot(s) wound. She died at the scene.

PGPD Homicide Unit detectives are actively working to identify a suspect(s) and determine a motive.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision which occurred on Tuesday. The deceased driver is 25-year-old Mohammed Al Yasiri of Laurel.

On April 28, 2026, at approximately 6:45 am, officers responded to a collision near Laurel Bowie Road at Old Laurel Bowie Road in the unincorporated section of Bowie. Al Yasiri was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second involved driver remains in critical condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed Al Yasiri was traveling southbound on Laurel Bowie Road. For reasons now under investigation, his car crossed into the northbound lanes where it collided with the second vehicle.

Nearly 100 Applicants Given Conditional Job Offers at One-Day Recruiting Event

The Prince George’s County Police Department offered 98 applicants conditional job offers at a recent recruiting event. The “Fast Track Hiring Event” was held at PGPD headquarters in Upper Marlboro last Saturday.

The Recruiting & Background Division hosted the one-day event which was designed to move qualified candidates through multiple steps of the hiring process in a single day. Applicants completed a physical test, an oral board, a written test and a preliminary background screening. Typically, these steps in the hiring process take weeks, if not months.

Interested applicants traveled from 10 states to participate in the hiring event – from as far away as Illinois, Florida, and New York. Nine candidates are currently experienced police officers with other agencies who are interested in potentially now joining the PGPD.

At the end of the day, the PGPD processed 132 applicants and offered 98 conditional job offers. The accepted applicants will now go through a more extensive background process with the goal of placing them in an upcoming academy class.

Due to the great success of this event, the department is planning to hold more one-day recruiting events soon. Please monitor agency social media for information!

PGPD Arrests Suspect in Temple Hills Fatal Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged a suspect in connection with a recent fatal shooting in Temple Hills. The suspect is 33-year-old Polo Shaw of Upper Marlboro. He’s charged with murdering 39-year-old Darian Ragland of Brandywine.

On April 10, 2026, at approximately 4:35 pm, officers responded to the 4700 block of Branch Avenue where they located the victim inside of his car suffering from a gunshot wound(s). He died at the scene.

Through various investigative techniques, detectives identified Shaw as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. With the assistance of the Emergency Services Team, he was taken into custody. The preliminary investigation revealed Shaw shot Ragland during a road rage incident. The suspect and victim were not known to each other.

Shaw is charged with first and second degree murder and related charges. He’s in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

PGPD Arrests Suspect in Armed Carjacking; Warrant Also Obtained Charging Suspect With Earlier Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Carjacking Interdiction Unit charged a suspect with an armed carjacking that occurred on Thursday. The suspect is 18-year-old Kairee Hicks of Bowie.

On April 16, 2026, at approximately 12:40 pm, officers responded to the 1900 block of Grand Way Boulevard in the unincorporated section of Bowie. The victim, an adult female, had just been carjacked. During the carjacking, the suspect displayed a handgun. The victim was not injured. The suspect fled in her 2014 Lexus sedan.

Through an extensive investigative effort, detectives located the victim’s car on Friday in the Lanham area. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver, Hicks, fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended in a crash. Hicks then fled on foot but was apprehended following a coordinated search. During his arrest, officers recovered a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number. Additional evidence linking him to the carjacking was recovered during the investigation.

In connection with the carjacking, Hicks is charged with multiple offenses, including armed carjacking, carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, illegal possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number among additional charges.

Gun Crimes Unit detectives have also obtained an arrest warrant charging Hicks with an earlier shooting. In this case, Hicks shot and seriously wounded a man in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Junior Highway on April 10, 2026. The preliminary investigation revealed Hicks shot the victim during a dispute.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash in Landover on Saturday. The name of the deceased driver, an adult female, will be released once her family is located and notified.

On April 11, 2026, at approximately 12:40 am, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the area of Landover Road and Martin Luther King Junior Highway. The driver was transported to a hospital where she died of her injuries. Her passenger, an adult male, suffered injuries that are preliminarily not considered life-threatening.

The preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling northbound on Landover Road approaching the exit for Martin Luther King Junior Highway, when for reasons now under investigation, her car veered off the roadway and struck a tree.

Mr. Boone was last seen on April 4, 2026, at approximately 09:30 am in the 8900 block of Hammer Lane in Upper Marlboro driving a 2022 silver Mercedes-Benz A 220 with MD tag "Boone".

Mr. Boone is approximately 5'9" tall and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a t-shirt and shorts; the colors are unknown.

PGPD Warns Residents About Multiple Scams

The Financial Crimes Unit is issuing an alert to residents about two scams currently being reported to the department. In both of these scams, suspects make direct personal contact with their victims.

The first scam involves suspects posing as Pepco utility workers. The scammers go to a victim’s home, often elderly victims, claiming an alarm was triggered indicating potential fire hazards in the home. Once inside of the victim’s residence, the suspect convinces the victim there is a serious electrical issue requiring immediate attention. The victim is asked to write a check for the needed repairs. The suspect then cashes the check without performing any actual work. The PGPD received one such report in 2025 with a loss of $18,500 to the victim. So far in 2026, we’ve received three reports. In one of the cases, the scammer was successful and stole $8,300 from the victim. The other two attempts were unsuccessful.

If you did not arrange an appointment with Pepco for repairs, do not let anyone into your home who is implying they are a utility worker. Call the company directly to verify the person’s employment and the work being done.

The PGPD’s Financial Crimes Unit is also getting reports of carrier scams. In these cases, suspects initiate contact with victims via email, text, or a phone call, often impersonating federal agents or government officials. The suspects convince victims their bank accounts are compromised and their money needs to be secured immediately. Victims are instructed to withdraw large amounts of cash and hand it over to a carrier who comes in person to collect the money for safekeeping. In other such cases, victims have also been instructed to deposit the cash in cryptocurrency ATMs. If you receive this type of communication, never click a link and don’t respond. Within the last four weeks, we’ve received three carrier scam reports. Combined, the victims lost more than $105,000.

The PGPD reminds all residents to never give money, gold, gift cards or anything else of value to someone you do not know, even if they are posing as representatives from legitimate businesses, banking institutions or government agencies. If you are worried about your bank account, contact your bank directly using the number on the back of your bank card.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Collision Involving Pedestrian

4/06/26 UPDATE: The deceased pedestrian in last Wednesday's fatal pedestrian collision has been identified as 28-year-old Hashim Kabbani.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian in Oxon Hill. Investigators are working to identify the deceased pedestrian, an adult male, so his family can be notified.

On April 1, 2026, at approximately 8:40 pm, officers responded to the area of St. Barnabas Road and Virginia Lane for the collision. The pedestrian died of his injuries on the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was struck by two vehicles in the eastbound lanes of St. Barnabas Road. Both drivers remained on the scene and were not injured.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Collision in Temple Hills

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision in Temple Hills. The deceased driver is 28-year-old Christopher Umanzor of Waldorf.

On March 27, 2026, at approximately 9:10 pm, officers responded to the 4300 block of Branch Avenue for a collision involving two vehicles. Umanzor died of his injuries at the scene. The second involved driver and his passenger were not injured.

The preliminary investigation revealed, for reasons now under investigation, Umanzor’s vehicle struck the rear of the second involved car, causing both vehicles to veer off the road. Umanzor’s vehicle ultimately struck a guardrail.

PGPD Charges Student in Possession of Gun at Suitland High School; Second Student Charged With Possession of Knife

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating after a student was in possession of a gun at Suitland High School on Thursday. The student is 18-year-old De’Ante Abbott of District Heights.

The preliminary investigation indicates Abbott got into a fight with a second male student in a hallway Thursday morning. When the assigned School Resource Officer (SRO) arrived to the fight location, he observed Abbott attempt to hand his laptop bag to another student. The SRO recovered a handgun in the bag. The second student involved in the fight with Abbott is also facing charges. The sophomore pulled out a knife during the fight with Abbott. The student suffered a minor self-inflicted knife wound to his hand. Abbott was not injured by the knife. The sophomore is charged with bringing a knife to school and second-degree assault. He is charged as a juvenile.

Abbott is charged as an adult with possession of a handgun, possession of handgun on school property, and additional handgun-related charges. He was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
