After the initial diagnosis of noncardiac chest pain, 49 percent of patients were re-evaluated in the emergency department and 42 percent underwent repeated cardiology evaluations.

Only 15 percent of the patients had gastrointestinal (GI) consultations. Of those, 38 percent had esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 4 percent had manometry (13 tests) and 2 percent had pH probes (six probes), the study authors reported. <a arteries are created equal, with women and men facing different heart risks even when they have the same amount of coronary plaque, a new study suggests.

Analyzing the results of coronary CT angiographies -- non-invasive tests that look for coronary artery blockages -- in 480 patients with acute chest pain, scientists from the Medical University of South Carolina found that the risk of major cardiac events was significantly higher in women when they had a large amount of plaque buildup and extensive hardening of the arteries.

On the other hand, men faced greater risks of heart attack or coronary bypass surgery when their arteries contained "non-calcified plaque," fatty deposits that accumulate deep in artery walls.

While the study didn't specifically quantify the risks of each scenario for men and women, it may be valuable to physicians ordering tests for heart patients in distress, said study author Dr. John Nance Jr., a radiology resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. <a parabens -- widely used as a germ-fighting preservative in cosmetics such as deodorant/antiperspirants -- and breast cancer.

Investigators have learned that parabens, also found in some drugs and food products, can mimic weakly the action of the female hormone estrogen -- an established risk factor for breast cancer. And the fact that a disproportionate number of breast tumors occur nearer the underarm also had scientists wondering.

But now, British researchers who examined breast tissue samples from 40 women who had mastectomies have found that traces of parabens are widespread in tissues, even in the seven women who said they'd never used underarm products. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Mummies Show Heart Disease Is an Ancient Problem

(HealthDay News) -- The earliest known case of coronary artery disease has been found in the 3,550-year-old mummy of an Egyptian princess. She lived between 1580 and 1550 B.C., and died in her early 40s, say researchers.

Their investigation with whole-body CT scans found that this wasn't a unique case. About 45 percent of 43 other mummies also had evidence of atherosclerosis, an accumulation of plaque in arteries.

The findings suggest that atherosclerosis has afflicted humans for a long time and isn't just a modern disease. The study was scheduled for presentation Sunday at the annual scientific session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), held in New Orleans.

"Commonly, we think of coronary artery or heart disease as a consequence of modern lifestyles, mainly because it has increased in developing countries as they become more westernized," co-principal investigator Dr. Gregory S. Thomas, a clinical professor and director of Nuclear Cardiology Education, University of California, Irvine, said in an ACC news release. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Losing Weight May Help Fight Gum Disease

(HealthDay News) -- Losing weight appears to help fight gum disease, a new study indicates.

It included 31 obese people who underwent treatment for gum disease. Some mild heart defects do not require any treatment. Others can be treated with medications, invasive procedures or surgery. Most adults with congenital heart disease should be monitored by a heart specialist and take precautions to prevent endocarditis (an infection of the heart) throughout their life.

Those with congenital heart disease are at risk for getting endocarditis, even if the heart was repaired or replaced through surgery.

To protect yourself

Tell all doctors and dentists you have congenital heart disease. You may want to carry a card with this information.
Call your doctor if you have symptoms of an infection (sore throat, general body achiness, fever). Colds and flus do not cause endocarditis. But infections, which may have the same symptoms, do. So, to be safe, call your doctor.Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Diagnosis and treatment of pericardial effusion

Diagnosis and treatment of pericardial effusion

G Ralph Corey, MD
Ralph Shabetai, MD

UpToDate performs a continuous review of over 375 journals and other resources. "When new drugs come out, the long-term side effects of these drugs are not well understood."

For the study, recently published in the journal Gastroenterology, Butler's team used 2004-2009 information in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's database on adverse events, which are reported by doctors whose patients use these drugs. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Diet, Cognitive Ability May Play Role in Heart Disease

(HealthDay News) -- Seniors who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and who have good cognitive function are much less likely to die from heart disease than those who have poorer cognitive function and eat fewer fruits and vegetables, a new study has found.
Cognitive function refers to the ability to think, remember, plan and organize information.
Researchers at the Drexel University School of Public Health in Philadelphia analyzed diet and cognitive data on 4,879 people (3,101 women and 1,778 men), age 70 and older, who took part in the U.S. Longitudinal Study of Aging. In addition, 10 cases of myopericarditis have been reported among military vaccinees. Although a causal association between vaccination and adverse cardiac events in the civilian population is unproven, as a precautionary measure, CDC recommends that persons with physician-diagnosed cardiac disease with or without symptoms (e.g., previous myocardial infarction, angina, congestive heart failure, or cardiomyopathy) be excluded from vaccination during this smallpox preparedness program. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

The human body is the best picture of the human soul

"The human body is the best picture of the human soul"
-Ludwig Wittgenstein

We live in a time which so many things are competing for our attention that often our bodies and our physical health end up last on our priority list. Yet we forget that nothing else matters without health. It is the first thing given to us when we come into this life, and the last thing taken from us.

In their books, Dr. Robert and Shelley Young offer you an opportunity to reset your priorities and experience the incredible vitality and energy that comes from balancing your body's biochemistry.

The author of the book "Sick and Tired", Dr. Robert O. Young, is a man for whom I have immense respect. If you are familiar with my work, you know that I have taught the health principals of natural hygiene for more than 20 years. Sharing the insights of this health philosophy has been incredibly rewarding as I have witnessed literally hundreds of thousands of people transform their lives. About a year ago, I read that taking daily aspirin helps prevent breast cancer. Now I hear that using aspirin or ibuprofen regularly increases the risk. Which is right?
A: I don't blame you for being confused. First, in 2003, analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative, a study involving almost 81,000 women, showed that long-term use of aspirin or ibuprofen reduced the risk of breast cancer, in some cases by as much as half.

The following year a study published in the May 26, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the risk of breast cancer was 28 percent lower among women who took aspirin seven or more times per week than among women in a control group who didn??t take aspirin regularly. That has led to confusion among the public--do the risks of eating fish outweigh the benefits?

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) tackled that question by undertaking the single most comprehensive analysis to date of fish and health. In the first review to combine the evidence for major health effects of omega-3 fatty acids, major health risks of mercury, and major health risks of PCBs and dioxins in both adults and infants/young children, the results show that the benefits of eating a modest amount of fish per week--about 3 ounces of farmed salmon or 6 ounces of mackerel--reduced the risk of death from coronary heart disease (CHD) by 36%. Notably, by combining results of randomized clinical trials, the investigators also demonstrated that intake of fish or fish oil reduces total mortality--deaths from any causes--by 17%. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

How a New Universal Healing Aid Resolved a Chronic Yeast Inf

by CJ Puotinen

Some medical problems are just as frustrating for physicians as they are for the patients they are trying to treat. One such problem is candidiasis, a systemic infection caused by Candida albicans, an organism that is classified as both a yeast and a fungus.

Candida occurs naturally and is normally held in check by beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.

However, following treatment with antibiotics, which destroys beneficial as well as harmful bacteria, or when well fed (Candida yeast thrives on sugar and carbohydrates), Candida can take over.

An estimated 35 percent of women using birth control pills have chronic vaginal yeast infections. In men, jock itch and athletes foot are common Candida-related problems.

Children, especially those who have been on antibiotics, can develop thrush (a throat infection), allergies, and other problems. Even the family dog can develop chronic ear infections because of Candida. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Is Eating the Same Foods Daily Unhealthy?

I was told that you if you eat the same thing everyday for a long period of time, such as having a hard-boiled egg everyday for lunch, your body will develop a toxicity FROM it. Is this true, even of good foods?
No, eating the same things every day - especially healthy foods - won't affect you adversely, and your body won't become toxic as a result. However, it is important to vary your diet to make sure that you are covering all your nutritional bases and that you're not getting too much of any one thing. I checked with pediatrician Sandy Newmark, M.D. to see if eating the same foods daily could pose a health problem for children. He said that he had seen no research that suggested any such danger, but he agreed that a variety of foods is best, for children as well as for adults. <a Western University in Cleveland analyzed self-reported information on the mobility, strength and physical limitations of more than 8,700 older people included in the 1994-2006 U.S. Health and Almost impossible to detect, especially in its early stages, this pH disturbance can be attributed to an excessive build-up of acids in the horse's system, a depletion of its natural alkaline reserves, injudicious training techniques; and other closely associated factors such as high grain diets, the prevailing climate and workload.

A drop in the pH indicates an increase in the acidity of the blood. In lay terms, this is referred to as 'acidosis', but more correctly it is the LOWERING OF THE ALKALINE RESERVES.

The blood of the equine athlete has a very delicate acid/alkaline balance. Optimum performance demands that this balance be maintained within very narrow, even critical, limits.

Definitions:

THE pH OF A SOLUTION is a symbol for the power of the hydrogen ions multiplied by 10.

AN ACID is a solution which provides hydrogen ions (H +) and can thus increase the H + of a solution, consequently lowering the pH - i.e. increase the activity.

A BASE is a substance which accepts hydrogen ions and can thus decrease the H + of a solution, consequently raising the pH - i.e. decreasing the acidity or raising the alkalinity. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Chocolate compounds fight high cholesterol

Chocolate has received a lot of attention for being a treasure trove of nutritional goodness. Polyphenols in cacao beans are linked to promoting heart, brain, and liver health, which has sparked renewed interest in chocolate as a medicinal food. And a new study adds to the growing list of benefits, showing that chocolate polyphenols also help to lower bad cholesterol.

Published in the journal Diabetic Medicine, the study tested the effects of polyphenol-rich chocolate in a group of 12 volunteers with type-2 diabetes. After 16 weeks, the researchers from Hull University in the U.K. discovered that the polyphenols helped lower participants' bad cholesterol levels while raising good cholesterol levels. http://www.nmh.org

Research to be published in the April 18 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology provides the first explanation of an active rather than passive process that leads to heart valve degeneration, furthering a Northwestern researcher's effort to lead a paradigm shift in the medical community's beliefs about the cause of valve disease.
Heart valve disease is caused not by a 'wear and tear' phenomenon, but by an inflammatory process likely triggered by high cholesterol that stimulates certain cells to reprogram into bone cells in the aortic valve and cartilage cells in the mitral valve, says principal investigator Nalini Rajamannan, MD, newly appointed director of the Center for Heart Valve Disease in the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and assistant professor of medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, who examined diseased mitral and aortic valves removed during surgery for the study.
Common Heart Dysfunction Can Help Bring on Heart Failure

(HealthDay News) -- A common form of heart trouble called diastolic dysfunction appears to worsen over time and may lead to an increased risk of heart failure, new research shows.

In people with diastolic dysfunction, which often comes with advancing age, the heart's left ventricle fills with blood in an abnormal way and is accompanied by elevated filling pressures.

The new study included more than 2,000 people aged 45 and older who participated in Minnesota's Olmsted County Heart Function Study. They were assessed from 1997 to 2000, and their diastolic left ventricular function was graded as being normal or having mild, moderate or severe dysfunction.

Participants were invited back for a second examination between 2001 and 2004, and more than 1,400 of them underwent follow-up testing for new-onset heart failure between 2004 and 2010.

Between the first and second examination, the prevalence of diastolic dysfunction of any degree increased from about 24 percent to more than 39 percent. Moderate or severe diastolic dysfunction rose from 6.4 percent to 16 percent. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Expensive, risky surgery for periphery artery disease pushed

Expensive, risky surgery for periphery artery disease pushed by doctors who ignore better alternatives

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a slow and progressive circulation disorder most often affecting arteries in the legs. Atherosclerosis, the same plaques of fat, calcium and other related gunk that clogs up arteries and cause heart attacks usually cause it.

If you have PAD of the legs, you know it can be a miserable condition, causing pain and numbness. You might think the study just announced at the 2011 American Roentgen Ray Society's annual meeting of radiologists, currently underway in Chicago, is reason to rejoice.

After all, the researchers found that a large growth in screening for PAD has resulted in many more surgical procedures, especially angioplasty (which pushes open the plaques using catheters carrying tiny balloons and is often used in conjunction with stents to keep the arteries propped open) to treat the condition. So if PAD is being diagnosed and treated, that must mean progress in treating the disease is being made, right?

That's the first impression you might get from a quick look at the new study. But here's a breaking research story that shows the importance of looking - really looking - at all the facts and not relying on mainstream media's shallow coverage or someone simply rewriting a press release. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Driving After Binge Drinking More Common Than Believed

(HealthDay News) -- Nearly one in eight binge drinkers say they get behind the wheel and drive within two hours of drinking, U.S. government researchers report.

The new research adds a timeline and other new information to what's known about drinking and driving, said study author Dr. Timothy Naimi, a physician with the alcohol team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report is scheduled to be published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

"A lot of studies, including ours, have established a strong connection between binge drinking and impaired driving, which is sort of obvious on some level," he said. "What hasn't been looked at is how many people actually do get behind the wheel after a binge drinking episode. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Links for 2009-07-10 [Digg]
