Don't Call it a Comeback

Okay. You can probably call it a comeback in this case. I've been gone a long time.

So if you follow my Twitter you'll know I recently logged back into WoW for the first time in ~3.5 years.

Been taking things slow, leveling up my characters, trying to get my bearings with WoW, gold making, and TSM again. Leveling up my main & professions, probably for not much since we're in a pre-expansion lull currently. My main made it through legion to 110, but my next alts were all at 100 sitting in their WoD garrisons when I logged in to them. I played a bit of legion content, but did not do many of the raids and missed most of the storyline of Legion. Got my main up to 120 pretty quickly with the 100% XP bonus + rested. Now to relearn how to play a Disc Priest...ugh.

Although a lot has changed, a lot has stayed the same. Seems like the overall plot is still naive good meaning Warchief appoints new Warchief with questionable motives > seems alright but different at first > Horde leader becomes ultimate evil bad guy by ripping a hole in time and space. It's Midsummer Fire Festival and I see people complaining that the ilvl of the cloaks hasn't gone up since the first Fire Fest in the expansion. Blizzard is still planning on server merges, and people are still complaining about them. There's an overpriced vendor mount that everyone's scrambling to get. The TradeSkillMaster team is hard at work creating a new iteration for TSM, in the form of TSM 4.10.

Luckily that last one I'm currently working with. Believe it or not, I never really used TSM 4, I kind of missed a whole generation there. I've been using 4.10, and so far I like it. All seems different, and getting used to it, but again a lot is the same. To learn more about TSM 4.10, check out this blog post by the TSM team to learn about the changes and sign up for the beta test. Unfortunately I don't think I'm the right person to comment on how the changes effect the user experience as I really don't have experience with the prior version. Coming from TSM 3 however, it seems like a great upgrade.

Not sure how serious I'm going to be playing WoW moving forward. Enjoying it so far, but I feel like I don't have the same amount of time to dedicate to it anymore. When I first started this blog I was in college and had loads of free time to wax poetic about the auction house. Now, not so much, even with working from home during the quarantine. Anyway just wanted to make a post to say "I'm still alive". More to come on the blog front for sure, I'll at least be complaining a bit, no doubt, and might make a few videos if I find the energy. Still need to get back into the groove though, so yeah. Hope you are all well, looking forward to being back involved with this community again.

Xmog list Update Feb 11, 2018

Just an FYI, I've updated the Transmog list as of 2/11/2018. The link is in the navigation bar above. As per the usual, I've just refreshed the groupings to reflect the most up to date pricing.

The Auction House API's that TSM uses to keep your in game prices up to date, which feeds my source of data to refresh this list and reorganize the pricing groups has been down for quite some time. You can check on the status here with this neat page Erorus from TUJ made. TSM has been doing manual pulls, which I assume are feeding their own API. If they're not this update is about 26 days old, but still more recent than my prior update.

Updating the Xmog list Oct 22, 2017

Hey guys,

It's been a while.

I've gone through and reorganized my Xmog groups to show current US Region pricing. The updated import list can be found here. I've been getting quite a few requests about this via email and various social media channels, so figured it was time. Glad to know people are still using the lists. The pricing was truly out of whack, but it should be good now. Please import and let me know if there's any issues. I resubbed just to check it though, so pretty sure it works.

TSM 4
It's an exciting day for Gold Makers. The TradeSkillMaster Team has officially announced TSM 4 and it looks great. Check out the full blog post on their site at this link. The new interface looks amazing, and like something out of a different game entirely. You can tell from what they have there that there's been a lot of reworking of the addon. I'm excited to see how TSM 4 develops, not sure yet if I'm going to get back on the saddle and back into gold making. Only time will tell.

At this link, you can sign up for the TSM 4 beta. This is a great opportunity to test out the new features, provide some valuable feedback to the TSM team, so I highly suggest you do it if that's something you're interested in. Of course, it's going to be buggy, so know that.

TradeSkillMaster Celebrates it's 5th Anniversary

I know it's been a while, but in case you didn't notice, the TSM team is wrapping up celebrating TSM's 5th Anniversary from it's launch. During their 5th anniversary they've encouraged people to Tweet about their favorite TSM experiences. As you may know I'm not a man of 140 characters, and I don't think that many characters could ever do TSM justice, so I had to come out of semi-retirement to write about my favorite experience with TSM.

TradeSkillMaster 2 Development
Back in the good old year of 2013 TradeSkillMaster 2 was just being developed. Now I'm not going to say it was my favorite TSM, the improvements the TSM team has made in TSM 3 have been amazing, but it was definitely the time I was most involved with TSM and the TSM team. During the development stages of TSM 2 I would hang out in the TSM IRC chat for hours complaining to Sapu and Bart about how this button didn't do exactly what I wanted, or how I thought they really should reconsider their decision not to add X to TSM. X being something that would really only benefit me and a small amount of players who used TSM in a specific way. On occasion I'd even open a bug ticket or two and add something productive to the team. The environment with the TSM team was always fun and jovial. During that time I did a livestream and TSM's Lead Developer Sapu came on my server and used latent code in the Dev version of TSM to change the color scheme of my TSM to pink. I didn't understand what was even going on for 20 minutes. You can watch the clip here, one of my favorite things that ever came out of livestreaming.

Not only does the TSM team know how to have fun, they know how to work hard. This addon is a labor of love, and the TSM team all have day jobs. Some do not even actively play WoW anymore for anything other than testing TSM. It's a lot like gold making really. We're all playing this game that has a lot going on - leveling, raiding, PvP, etc., but we all play some sort of meta game by flipping/crafting to make gold in the auction house. The TSM team also has a very niche passion, and we are all grateful for it. They're also very open to constructive feedback, and extraordinarily helpful people. If you've ever hopped in IRC chat for a question on TSM, and been patient enough to wait for someone to answer, you've likely been answered with detailed answers and followup questions, and an abundance of resources.

Most importantly TSM is the reason we can all bare to make gold. I used Auctionator for a good deal of time before TSM was released, but once it was out, I could never imagine going back. So thank you to the team that makes TSM possible, and for everything they've added to our niche little community! Congratulations on 5 years, and I hope there's many more to come.

Tiered Auctioning Operations

Just wanted to make a quick post to point out my latest YouTube video. This one is on "Tiered" or "Stacked" Auctioning operations. What the method basically is, is layering auctioning operations in a way such that you can sell the same item in a variety of ways, depending on either when or how long you've been posting the item. Want to post 5 stacks of 1 and 10 stacks of 5? It's possible. Want to sell X item for Y price for the first 50 times you post it, but Z price after that? Also possible. Be sure to check it out!

Be sure to let me know here or on the comments on the video what other types of things you'd like to see, and I just might make your video! As always, I like to aim for videos that are helpful to a wide variety of watchers, but you never know! :)

Learn TSM 3 Series only 5 Months in the Making!

So I finally managed to finish my TSM 3 series, publishing the final video today, Part 4 - Shopping. You can check out the video here. Moving forward I want to focus on more advanced strategies, especially going into Legion. I've been playing with some different ideas, but my main goal in this is to find one that I'm going to stick to and can commit a regular schedule to. This weekend will be an indicator of how far I can get with that, I'm going to spend a good amount of time creating some content, and trying some new things out, and I hope you will all check them out and find them interesting/helpful, and provide some honest feedback if you think it's trash! :-)

Launch of Phat's Hate Mail Repository

Hi everyone,

Exciting news today. I finally put together a plan I have had in mind for a long while, to create a spot on my blog to feature gold making related hate mail.

I've been the recipient of quite a few crass hate mails over the years, and I've saved some of the more touching ones in my bank alt's guild bank. That being said, once a week (or perhaps once every 2 weeks depending on submissions), I'm going to be featuring hate mail sent to me, sometimes along with a back story (if one is included). If you're interested in sending in your own hate mail, please use this template form with instructions to do so.

Without further ado, below is some of my own hate mail that I've received over the years to kick it off. Not much backstory on these, just people raging at my AH Alt that I use to post transmog (dat beautiful orc above). I keep these saved in my Alt's guild bank to look back on for inspiration.

Pay Attention to What You're Buying!

Recently I added a vendor subgroup to my TSM Transmog List, because there were quite a few items on my transmog list that happened to be vendor items, that people were unaware of based off my list alone. As I was shopping later that week, I came across an item, Glorious Shoulders for 600g. At first I clearly recognized this item as the shoulders for Glorious Transmog Set, a very sought after "platekini" set for transmog. Seeing it for 600g I thought, what a deal! These pieces sell in the 10's of thousands, and these shoulders were only 600g!

Of course, I moused over the item to see it's DB Global Market value before purchasing, and I noticed something odd. The market value was 5k and it was in my Vendor group. Of course my first thought was "you can buy pieces from the Glorious set from a vendor!?"

I took to Wowhead, and if you were sleuthy enough to click my Glorious Shoulders link above, you'd know that the linked shoulders are nothing but!

Nothing Glorious about these Shoulders...except maybe the name!

TSM Wowuction Prices are Going, Going, Gone!

As many of you may have noticed, TSM_Wowuction has been a bit unstable recently, with price updates taking much longer than normal. To this effect, the TSM team has announced they've decided to end support for Wowuction pricing as of the r303 release of the TSM App.

What does this mean for you?
Most likely, not much. As mentioned in the above post, the Wowuction price sources will now map to a corresponding TSM price source. Also, TSM has created their own Region Market price source in DBRegionMarketAvg. Quite frankly, I was unaware that DBGlobalMarketAvg was truly "global" (US and EU servers combined), and I had thought that it was a Region-wide (US or EU specific )price source all along. The difference now would be that you should be able to recognize nuances in the price sources between US and EU servers now, which is most likely quite noticeable in high end items.

To me, this update is a bit of a nonissue. I've stated multiple times that I much prefer TSM sources, as they are updated hourly to my addon, and the TSM team is much more involved in World of Warcraft, and have been consistently there to fix things when they go awry, whether it be a battle.net Auction House API update, or changes in game that require the addon to be fixed. They are the gold standard for the WoW gold making community, and I believe they will remain so for time to come.

I believe that to an extent this will also clear up some confusion for newbies when considering price sources for items, as now there is not as much confusion between the sources and they're all fairly well described. If these changes go live before the weekend, I'm going to attempt to put together a video on price sources over this weekend, as quite frankly it will be a lot more straightforward now.

Volatility of the Transmog Market

Earlier this week I got a sale that I thought really exemplifies the transmog market.

The sale was for a 60k+ transmog piece, and I decided to look it up in my TSM Accounting to see when/for how much I bought it, because I was pretty sure it had been a recent purchase. Lo and behold I found this:

As you can see, I had bought this item just 10 days prior to selling it for 1,400g, and sold it for 67k. Prior to that though, I had bought this piece 426 days ago, and sold it 49 days ago, which means I had held on to it for over a year before it sold (377 days roughly).

I think this really captures the true volatility of the transmog market. Are there people out there that will pay the hiked up prices for these rare transmog items, especially items like this one that are no longer in game, but you never know when that person will be looking on the AH for your specific item. That person can take just days to find your item, or literally over a year. In both cases, even with posting fees, I made gold hand over fist. This is really important to remember. You may sit and watch one item for a year and see it never sells, but that doesn't mean all is lost.

My transmog inventory is a mix of things that are fast sellers, slow sellers, things I've never sold, and inventory I can't keep on the shelf. Each individual item cannot alone sustain me, and may result in pure loss, but all items as a whole will profit in the long run, and that's really all there is to it.

12.29.15 Transmog List Update - Added Vendor Subgroup

Hey guys,

Thanks to Heenicks_ on this thread it was brought to my attention that my transmog list had quite a few vendor items which had high price thresholds.

Of course, I've now updated my transmog list to include Vendor as a source, as well as my usual regrouping by price.

This of course will probably tank prices on the vendor gear in the long run, but if you want to try and trick your competition who did not update their lists to purchase these items, then now's the time! I may restructure based on the currency required to obtain the item from a vendor, but do not have the time to do so at the moment. Also keep in mind the DMF groupings are higher due to the time out from the DMF. These will likely continue to fluctuate based on when I pull the data.

Transmog: Phat Lewts' New Method

It's 3 months short of being 2 years since I came out with my most recent transmog method/list, and that's way too long. On the heels of Blizzcon, where there was a big change announced to transmog (officially at least), I'm coming out with my new lists. Some may be saying transmog is dead, but that's TBD. There's some great discussion going on in the premium section of The Consortium if you have access to that, or in /r/woweconomy here about the changes to the market that Legion will bring

To me, transmog is not dead, any more than the pet market is since pets are account wide. So long as items require to be bound to be learned, there will still be a viable market for transmog. That being said we still have at least 9 months until Legion, so check out my latest (and greatest) transmog video/setup (direct link to new list here):

Transmog List Update 9.11.15

Just wanted to put out a quick post that I've updated the xmog list tot their current subgroup status and uploaded it to my normal location for my Xmog lists. I've now created 2 separate lists, a TSM 2 Import and a TSM 3 Import, for those of you trying out the TSM 3 Beta. For those of you who care, the import string has changed a bit for 3, there's now an indicator for an item vs. a pet, etc. So now instead of having items:

1234,33232,55454

they need to be listed as:

i:1234,i:33232,i:55454

That being said, I only have TSM 3 at the moment, and I've only actually tested importing the TSM 3 groups. They work swimmingly. If the TSM 2's don't work, let me know, but I'm pretty used to updating that list!

Theory of Transmog

This is a post I've wanted to do for a while, so buckle in kiddies, we're going for a ride.

The Latest in Xmog Fashion

Transmog is a Long Term Investment
One of the most common questions I see from transmog selling beginners is "I've got X items, and I'm not getting many sales, what am I doing wrong?" The answer of course is nothing, granted X is insignificant, say less than a few hundred. Even in the hundreds, transmog can be slow. Transmog is slow.

I also see people claiming they're going to farm a bunch of xmog and turn it around for a WoW Token before their sub expires in 3 days. Really? No. Sure, you can get a piece that's worth 11k, but your buyer needs time to find it. Now if you are trying to sell to sellers, then by all means mark it down low and lose lots of gold, but transmog is the Looooong Game if you're playing it right, and is not a quick turnover market.

Transmog to me is not a market you get in immediately. At first you want to invest your gold in fairly liquid assets so you can reinvest, and get that delicious quickly compounding interest. Only when you have a sizable quantity of gold to invest, and are running out of options, should transmog be your go to market. That's not to say you cannot make gold off xmog alone. With 2k start up capital, and patience you can turn it into hundreds of thousands, but that key ingredient is patience and time. You do not want to tie up all your capital in transmog the same way you do not want to tie up all of your capital in mounts. It's just silly to put all your eggs in one long term basket. You want a nice portfolio of long term and short term strategies, to really optimize your gold's potential future value.

When you decide it's time to invest in transmog, you need to understand unequivocally that you will probably be down gold for quite some time before making it back. Yes, you'll always see those success stories where the first thing someone buys is worth 10k, they spent 5g on it, and sold it overnight. Outliers happen.

Just know that the key to transmog is amassing a large, diverse stock of items, and constantly reposting. Do not worry about items as individuals, but your stock as a whole, and have something else going while you're acquiring armor, or you will lose interest.

One Size Fits All
Now if you're reading this and have tried the xmog market you've probably tested out my price sources which roughly are:

Buy: 20% Global
MinSell: 50% Global
NormSell: 125% Global
MaxSell: 250% Global

These are not perfect price sources for all servers, which I expressed in my transmog video, but people tend to gloss over that. I do like to go off of the entire WoW population when pricing. The global averages give you a nice baseline of what something is potentially worth relative to other items transmog items. For example if Chestpiece A is worth 600g globally, and Chestpiece B is worth 1200g globally, I know that in general, people value Chestpiece B to be worth twice as much as Chestpiece A. That to me, in a perfect world (of Warcraft), would mean that using these sources at a percent optimized for your server would give you ideal pricing, but unfortunately that's just not the case.

That's why I choose to use global sources personally, and lean towards the hypothetical, but if you're on a larger market, incorporating server specific prices can be extraordinarily useful too, as market prices will tend to behave a bit more on large servers. The bottom line though is that you need to experiment with price sources to find out what works best for you. I have been planning for a while on giving multiple examples of what different people are using for transmog pricing on my pricing page, but that will be up when I do my transmog video over for TSM 3.

Hopefully this helps shed some light on some transmog misconceptions, and these are a few I want to address in my upcoming TSM 3 Transmog video, while also addressing the new transmog mechanic in Warlords (possibly separate videos). What I Want From Legion Gold Making

So the new WoW expansion has been announced and the buzz has begun. This article is going to be an opinion piece of my impressions of WoD gold making and what needs to change in Legion.

WoD Goldmaking
WoD was supposed to be an ultimate revolution in gold making. From the beginning, early stages of the Alpha, we were promised a profession revamp, and there were many interactions between the developer Hwoo and the Consortium gold making community. You can go back and read some of the conversations if you'd like, but the basic gist from the gold making community at the time was we were being "heard" by the devs. We all had a sense of optimism heading into WoD that everything would be more interesting, and new challenges would arise from a "new profession system", and gold making had finally reached a golden age.

Unfortunately, that's not what we were delivered. What we got at launch felt like a half-baked product, and left a lot of professions high and dry. Gold making with professions really took a hit this expansion. Maybe it took all those mindless shufflers out of the equation and left the market to those seasoned vets, but it killed the profitability and interesting choices of many professions. Jewelcrafting is probably one of the last professions someone will suggest now, and it had been a king for a long time. Not to say that one profession should be that OP that it's the default suggestion for new gold makers to have always, but they basically took it out back behind the shed and shot it in the head. Enchanting still had some profits, but slots were reduced. The 3 big crafting professions (Tailoring/LW/BS) were reduced to daily CD making machines, with not many interesting choices from there. Sure it was easier gameplay to not have to enchant/get a belt buckle/get leg armor for every new piece you got in a raid, but it killed some nice routes for those 3 big guys. The gold making game has become dull.

Legion So Far...
So far we have not heard much about Legion and the Devs have seemed to realized that WoD as a whole was a disappointment to many players, and are focusing on not making promises they cannot keep. To me this is a good sign, hopefully transparency continues moving forward. What we do know about professions so far is this (via MMO-Champ):

There will be a quest line for each profession.
There will be some system changes to professions as a whole to improve the UI and add new functionality.
The professions team for Legion is the largest that Blizzard has ever had for WoW and lots of new things are coming. The team heard the feedback about Warlords professions.

The quest line could be the same as this expansion, and honestly I did not find the quests all too interesting, and it didn't really add any gating, so they didn't help gold makers much. Thus far though, it seems like they're at least making some corrective steps to change professions, with the UI and new functionality (whatever that may be). It's nice to hear that they've got the largest team ever for professions, but that could just mean 2 interns instead of 1. I jest, but I'm hoping they stay true to that last point, and introduce some new and interesting profession choices and make sure that "no profession is left behind". All professions (sans gathering) should have interesting choices, and I hope they can accomplish that.

What we were all expecting for WoD was a new professions system, not like Wrath -> Cata -> MoP where it was basically the same mold moved up an expansion, but a new system that would challenge what we knew about professions, and change how we thought about making gold. Creating new complex problems for us to solve and new and interesting choices to make. It really fell short of that expectation.

I personally would love for Legion gold making to make me think again. For a beginner, it may still do that now, but once you get that formula down, it's mindless. I'd like new interesting problems to come out of Legion gold making, and I hope the Dev team can deliver. I also hope that the garrison theme does not continue with these class halls. They claim that the professions team has heard the feedback about Warlords professions, but I honestly hope they can move forward and correct them in a meaningful way, but only time will tell! What do you want to see the most in Legion gold making?

Initial Reception of the WoW Token

So the WoW Token was released on US realms this Tuesday, and it's been an interesting ride so far.

If you aren't in the know, a WoW Token provides us goblins a way to pay for our WoW subscriptions using our favorite virtual currency - gold. WoW Tokens can be purchased from the auction house and have pricing based on demand and some super secret Blizzard formula.

WoW Tokens started out at 30k gold. Right after the initial release, the price went up a bit, but fell below 30k and hasn't seen it since. You can personally track the WoW Token price on wowtoken.info, a site created by one of our favorite goblin enablers, Erorus, the creator of The Undermine Journal.

So far the price has been hard to pin down. Blizzard has gone from hourly to quarter-hourly back to hourly adjustments, but consistently, the adjustment in price (supposedly driven by demand has been +/- 1% at each iteration. Below is the graph from wowtoken.info at the time of this post:

Hey guys,

Quick post just to let you know that there's a new official TSM module out to help support updating the in game addon prices via the TSM App. The new module is necessary to get the data from the most recent version from the app, and will be essential moving forward. I've added it to my download package for the TradeSkillMaster Suite, and if you want to learn more and/or leave feedback about the new app, you can do so on this thread from The Consortium.

Don't forget to manually update AuctionDB and Wowuction (they will show as modified). Having old versions will cause errors!

WoW Token Coming Out Soon.™

So Blizzard has officially announced that the WoW Token is coming out Soon.™ I thought they announced that already, but this soon is sooner than the last soon, by pure fact that it happened later in time. If you want to read the official Blizzard post, you can find it here.

Price Per Token
So Blizzard finally released their starting price per token, $20 USD, and the rough equivalent depending on your local currency. This is not all too surprising, and to me seems a fairly reasonable number to increase profits. They will once again be using American servers as the guinea pig, and releasing it there first. It's going to be interesting to watch that's for sure. Blizz has announced they would be determining the price, which if they weren't having independent auditors from some major accounting firm come and analyze it, well duh Blizz! I myself have just had my 6 month sub renew about a week before the original announcement, so I will be observing the price at first, and waiting to buy at an optimal time. The WoW Token - Gold for Game Time

As I discussed in my previous post, Blizzard is toying around with the idea of releasing a game time for gold option. Today they released a more in depth post about how they're planning to implement it. If you want to read the post in it's entirety, you can find it here.

The Gold Maker's Summary

If you (quite like me) only care about how this effects the avid gold maker, not the average player buying the token to sell for gold, it's pretty cut and dry. The tokens can be bought from the Shop (in game or otherwise) for $$$, and are worth 30 days of game time. Blizzard has not specified for how much real money (TBD), but one would think somewhere in the $15 range.

I believe Blizzard's true motivations in doing this will show when the pricing comes out. Right now they're claiming it will cut down on illegitimate gold selling and stealing of accounts. To me if they price it over $15, Blizzard will be making a statement, because they will now be making more than they previously would have had the player who uses the token straight out paid for their subscription, and their true motivation - money, not to improve the game environment - will be clear.

Once again, I've updated my transmog list. You can find the updated list here, or by clicking the button at the top of the page. I've been reevaluating the groups every month or so, you can give credit to this particular update to Cryan:

Anyway, the groups are reorganized to the most recent TSM Global Market Prices, and sorted accordingly. As always, with these new groups, ignore the defunct group, as it has dropped below my lowest threshold (or not if you really don't want to).
