While Guinness would normally flow freely and revelers would cheer on a lavish parade in a sea of green, this year there will be very few, or no parties. The bars are closed, and our newfound mandate of “social distancing” discourages congregating in groups of ten or more. Grocery stores have been ransacked, so good luck gathering all the right ingredients for a traditional corned beef and hash dinner. In short, welcome to the new normal.

The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, is sweeping the world, leaving panic and fear in its wake. Similar in epidemic properties to a flu, only more unpredictable and fatal, the disease has caused thousands of deaths across the world, with the toll in America creeping quickly towards four digits. As the disease spreads easily between people in close proximity to each other, the goal these days is to isolate oneself as much as possible. Both national, state-level, and city officials have made decisions to promote this isolation, with a spate of closings, cancellations, and other changes that affect life as normal in the City of Brotherly Love. Read on to find out what, as of this morning (3/17/20), you should know.

City bleeds money as entertainment is cancelled.

As of Sunday, the city of Philadelphia was out $1.2 million – and counting – over cancelled performances and events. As per a weekend survey by Theatre Philadelphia, the umbrella marketing organization for regional theater companies, 28 theaters had reported in with 72 percent reporting performance cancellations and 78 percent reporting lost income. Katherine Clark, marketing manager for the group, stated that, based on the responses she was getting, it wouldn’t be surprising if the economic impact was twice what was being unofficially estimated. Desperate theater companies are asking patrons to help out by making donations as a means of keeping troupes and venues afloat through this difficult time.

All non-essential business halted.

As of 5pm yesterday, Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney finally caved to mounting pressure by Governor Tom Wolf and the public to essentially shut down the city. All non-essential business has been halted: bars, barbers, bookstores, etc. Only banks, grocery stores, restaurants’ take-out and delivery services, and very few other essential services remain available. Residents are encouraged to stay home, limit contact with everyone – even family members – who are not part of the household, and to continue taking precautions seriously. Small business owners and many workers around the city were left wondering how they would get by without their regular income.

Food deliveries to the infirm are being impacted.

MANNA, Meals on Wheels, and other charitable organizations dedicated to bringing food to the infirm and homebound, are losing volunteer drivers in droves as fear over the spread of coronavirus spreads. Around 70% of MANNA’s yearly force of 9,500 volunteers — many of whom participate through their companies — have stopped showing up lately, leaving execs and pretty much any warm body on deck to drive the trucks to deliver life-saving meals to those who wouldn’t otherwise get them. Right now, there are also concerns about supplies. For the moment, all is well. But for it to remain so, the chain needs to stay intact.

SEPTA ridership tanking as days wear on.

SEPTA, Philly’s local transportation service, is seeing rider numbers plummet as fear of coronavirus has people holing up at home. Yesterday, figures were down 46% on transit services and 68% on Regional Rail compared to an average weekday. Of course, there is also the fact that many people are working from home or have been laid off, meaning that even those who would normally have to brave the commute aren’t doing it. SEPTA is currently negotiating adjustments to its Regional Rail schedule, dropping back to severe weather scheduling to cut the amount of wasted routes. Additionally, a large number of engineers and co0nductors has seen a high number of train cancellations. An adjusted schedule for buses, subways, and trolleys could come by the end of the week, said Scott Sauer, SEPTA assistant general manager of operations, at a press conference Monday.

It’s a sort of March Madness all right… but not in the ways you might expect. For one, there’s no basketball – or baseball, hockey, XFL, or any other professional sports. People are raiding grocery stores and fiending not for drugs, but for Lysol wipes and toilet paper. We’re experiencing the phenomenon of “social distancing,” or staying the hell away from other people. Flights around the world are cancelled. Folks are walking the streets in medical masks. It feels like the end of the world. #ThanksCoronavirus

But even as we citizens of the world deal with major disruptions like mandatory quarantines, healthcare shortages, and speed-round political maneuvering, there are minor inconveniences by the gross, including some that might slip through the cracks. A good example is the scheduled Philadelphia Pokemon Go Safari Zone event, which is currently on the calendar for May 8th – May 10th in Dilworth Park. Now, a lot can happen in the two-ish months between now and then… just look at the state of our existence back in January until now. But with the cancellation of Safari Zone events in St. Louis, which was supposed to take place between the 27th and 29th of this month, has the e-sports world fearing the worst. A Safari Zone event in Liverpool, England is also in jeopardy.

Now, in the grand scheme of things, losing out on a silly event to get pixelated characters is not what anyone sane would call a big deal. What nobody can naysay, however, is that Pokemon Go is good, clean, mindless fun. And that’s a commodity that’s in rather short supply right now. Folks who have already bought tickets to the event should keep their eyes peeled on both the mainstream news and Pokemon Go’s in-app newsfeed. And, in the meantime, stay safe, my friends. Let’s suspend the “gotta catch ’em all!” mentality for a bit and focus on not catching (or sharing) anything at all.

A whimsical wire sculpture of Danny DeVito’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia character, art collector Ongo Gablogian, was recently found dangling from the telephone cables at Broad Street and Washington Avenue. At first, onlookers thought the rotund little man was a caricature of ol’ Benny Franklin, as it sported a broad, angular hairstyle and big glasses. Instead, street artist Reed BMore confessed on Instagram that his latest creation was inspired by his favorite scene of his favorite show, the cynical and outrageous comedy set in a Philadelphia pub.

Ongo wasn’t Reed’s first contribution to the City of Brotherly Love’s street art scene. Based in Baltimore, Reed creates “intricate, poignant, and pop-culture-inspired” wire figures that inspire instant recognition, and then uses a telescoping pole to dangle them from utility lines, traffic lights, and other locations where they are likely to entertain and enchant eagle-eyed passersby. Reed (birth name: Jon Struse) graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art and has been dubbed “the Banksy of Baltimore.”

The artist’s work first came to public attention three years ago thanks to the observations of Conrad Benner on his popular Philadelphia street art blog, Streets Dept. Benner observed that the wire Reed used to create the sculptures was almost paper-thin, meaning that people walking or driving right under them might not know that they were even present unless the people were paying attention. In 2017, a little girl hanging on a pastoral swing was sighted near the Divine Lorraine hotel in North Philly. There’s a notorious flying pig in Spring Gardens, a tree-shaped car air freshener also in South Philly, as well as a mysterious Garfield the cat who has made a cameo on Reed’s Instagram but has yet to be found.

The Philadelphia Streets Department has issued no comment on the legality of the hanging art, or whether they will take steps to remove said pieces.

A jawdropping penthouse condo with views of Independence Square has rocked the small world of Center City real estate with a heretofore unheard-of price tag. Listed for a cool $32 million – the approximate amount that a Top 10 NFL player makes in an entire season – the home on the top floors of the insanely chi-chi 500 Walnut building is gorgeous, stylish, and move-in ready… if you have the bank account to possess it.

Gleaming floor-to-ceiling windows adorn the living space of the penthouse, which occupied the 25th, 26th, and roof-levels of the prestigious condo tower. Clocking in at 11,000 square feet, the new owner would have ample room for entertaining guests, throwing parties, fitting in a film crew, and whatever else stupidly-rich folks like to do with their time. There are only three bedrooms, but each is about the size of a starter home. There are four full bathrooms and three half-baths, so there’s never any concern about whether the facilities are occupied. There’s a built-in bar in the living room so that you can live all your latter-day Mad Men fantasies. The kitchen is eat-in, with broad doors opening up to a sizeable balcony with a view, but there’s also a formal dining room. And if the immense living room wasn’t enough, there’s also a family room and an office/gym flex space. Having one of those lavish parties that multi-millionaires throw? Lucky fact then that there’s a catering kitchen in the unit.

All this us to say nothing about the communal amenities at 500 Walnut, which include a sprawling two-story fitness complex, a 50-foot lap pool with attached hot tub, a combined library and billiard room, a private boardroom for moguls needing meeting space close to home, and even a 5-star guest suite.

Nothing quite like this has hit the market in Philly before, so it remains to be seen how long the property will remain on the market or if the price tag will hold firm.

Ladies and gents: do you swoon at the sight of a bushy beard? Do lumberjack types make you weak in the knees? Join the crowd.

Razor and trimmer manufacturer Wahl named Philadelphia America’s most beard-friendly city in 2018, and it’s true that the City of Brotherly Love loves the follicly-blessed. Our own governor, Tom Wolf, sports a well-coiffed beard, and so do some of the best-loved figures in the city. Look at Gritty – his luscious ginger facial hair is an inimitable facet of his charm.

Is it any surprise that Philadelphia is ground zero for well-bearded specimens? They showed out last Saturday at the Coalition Of Beards Philadelphia Facial Hair Championship, held at the Dave & Buster’s in Old City. Several categories were in contention, including best muttonchops (gimme that Civil War-era barrister realness, baby!), Best in Show, and even prizes for artificial beards crafted by ladies and service dog beards. There were no actual awards save a trophy and bragging rights, which go far in a metro with as much magnificent facial hair as this one.

The scores were determined scientifically through “The Library of Congress of beard competitions,” the FHL, or Facial Hair League. Through the app, bystanders and judges could follow the competition, view the competitors, and play in fantasy facial hair leagues. Yes, such a thing exists. Between 70 and 80 bearded studs competed, from eight Philly “beard clubs” – fraternities for the distinguished facially-coiffed, with names like Bearded Villains of Pennsylvania, the Six O’clock Shadow Beard Club, and the Bearded Men’s Society of Ocean City. Hosting the competition was a hometown favorite, Working Class Beards and Dames, which now has about 100 members from Iowa to Oklahoma and Peru to Pakistan.

Do you have an enviable beard? Keep your eye on the Championship page for next year’s competition details. And hey, even if you have nothing but wisps on your chin right now, you have ample time to take your vitamins, invest in a nice comb, and cultivate the facial hair of romantic dreams!

There may be no legal restriction on adults consuming alcohol these days, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to pretend you are doing something illicit. In a a city rampant with trendy bars featuring every sort of gimmick, from fancy craft cocktails curated by “mixologists” to accompanying haute cuisine app menus, to insane concoctions featuring molecular gastronomic techniques and boba pearls. It’s all getting a little nuts. There’s something so beautifully simple about a dimly-lit, tucked-away liquor joint where you can drink the classic your grandparents imbibed and hide from the world for a little while. To that end, enjoy this round-up of Philly’s best hidden bars, or speakeasies.

The Franklin Mortgage Company

On the other side of a nondescript black door is a luxuriantly modern hidden bar with an authentic origin story. The Franklin Mortgage Company – it’s always been a bar, despite the name – was established in the late 1920s by legendary Philly gangster Max “Boo Boo” Hoff. They say that, in their heyday, Hoff’s crew ran more illegal hooch than Al Capone! Today, the Mortgage Company prides itself on straight-up takes on classic cocktails, as well as an extensive list of cutting-edge libations such as the Lords of the Night, Sagittarius Rising and Day of Atonement.
