A Look at China's 7-footers: Li Muhao

With Yao Ming's retirement from the National Basketball Association and Chinese National Basketball Team, Wang Zhizhi aging fast, and Sun Mingming turning out to be a bust, China's next crop of big men can actually provide ample replacements way past Yi Jianlian's basketball career. This blog is the first of a series of posts about China's young big men that will provide readers a glimpse of the headaches to come for the Philippine national basketball team as well as other Asian teams trying to gain Asian basketball supremacy.

7'2" Li Muhao
Born June 2, 1992 at Dongguan, Guangdong Province

Li Muhao was introduced to the world at the 2009 Nike Global Challenge in Portland, Oregon when he was 17. Although not bulky at 100 kilograms, he is among the heftier 7-footers from China who are mostly severely underweight. He played for China in the 2011 FIBA U19 Championships in Latvia where he averaged 8.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per outing.

In a three-game series against the Duke Blue Devils, Li averaged 16 points and 5.5 rebounds, shooting 62.5% from the field and 54.5% from free throws in the two games he was fielded.

Aside from a 7'5" wingspan, Li has a maximum vertical leap of 36.4 inches. He can hit the perimeter jumper, excels in the fastbreak game as he has above average quickness and ball handling skills for his size.

19-Year-Old Argentine Seeks Philippine Basketball Scholarship

Tall Order for Philippine Under-16 Team in Vietnam

The Energen Pilipinas Under-16 Youth Basketball Team will be facing a tall order in the 2nd FIBA Asia Under-16 Championships in Nha Thrang, Vietnam on October 18-28, 2011. Mainstays Gideon Babilonia(6'5"), Gelo Vito(6'4"), Radge Tongco and Arvin Tolentino(6'3") have not been released by their schools severely depleting the Philippine frontline. 6'5" reserve center George Isaac Go has been elevated to man the post for the Philippines. While the Philippines is in a lighter bracket in the first round, they stand to face the taller squads of India, China, Lebanon, South Korea and Iran in the later phases of the tournament. China boasts of a line-up that includes four players taller than 6'8" with no player under 6'1". They are bannered by 7'1" Zhou Qi and 6'11" Pan Ning. There's shortest player is 6'1" point guard Zhou Jiwei. India has 7'1" Satnam Singh Bhamara, Lebanon has 6'9" Yaacoub Al Agha, South Korea has 6'8" Park Intae, and Uzbekistan has 7'1" Ruslan Bokhodirov.

A look at 6'9" Arnold Van Opstal's Season 74 Statistics

Many Philippine basketball followers are optimistic about the development of Arnold van Opstal's game, the 6'9" man mountain from De La Salle University who just completed his first season with the Green Archers in UAAP Season 74. Playing 13 games in his rookie season for the Green Archers, van Opstal put up averages of 6.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 1.9 turnovers in 16.2 minutes while shooting 50% from the field and 54% from the line(20/37). It will be interesting to see how he will fare in season 75. And should Ateneo's Greg Slaughter returns, Filipino basketball fans have another interesting match-up to look out for.

The NCAA's tallest player this season, 6'11" Jericho De Guzman barely saw action for the College of Saint Benilde Blazers in the first round of the 87th season logging a total of 2 minutes in 2 games and only has 3 fouls to show for his statistics.

In his most recent game, De Guzman had 2 points and 1 turnover in 5 minutes making 1 of his 2 field goal attempts in the Blazers 89-94 loss to the Lyceum Pirates. De Guzman has long been watched by Philippine basketball followers mainly because of his height which is a rarity among Philippine basketball players. Filipino basketball fans were eager to see him improve his game decently, but it seems many would be disappointed so far.

6'9" Fil-am's 2010-2011 Basketball Statistics

Filipino basketball players who are 6'9 or taller are a rarity, whether local or mixed race. It is no wonder that many Philippine basketball fans had high hopes for West Virginia State University's Fil-am center Isaac Holstein, a 6'9" center who will soon be playing his sophomore year for the Yellow Jackets. However, his freshman numbers for the NCAA Division II school are wanting. He played 14 games in the 2010-2011 season garnering totals of 10 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, and 4 turnovers converting into averages of 0.714 points, 0.929 rebounds, 0.071 assists, 0.071 steals, 0.143 blocks and 0.286 turnovers per outing. He made 4 of 11 field goal attempts(36.4%) and 2 of 7 free throws(28.6 percent).

San Miguel signs Fajardo, Banchero for ABL

SMC sports director Noli Eala has announced the signing of the full roster of SMC's ABL team through Twitter. 6'10" center Junmar Fajardo of CeSAFI's University of Cebu and 6'1" point guard Chris Banchero of Seattle Pacific University spearhead the Beermen's campaign in the ASEAN Basketball League. Joining Fajardo in the SMC frontcourt are Marlon Basco, Norman Gonzales, Hafer Mondragon, Junjun Cabatu, Jan Colina and import Richard Jeter, a former LA Laker and Memphis Grizzly who is a 6'6" small forward now playing for Hoverla in Ukraine. Helping Banchero at the backcourt are Froilan Baguion, Allan Mangahas, Benedict Fernandez, KC Dela Pena, and RJ Rizada. Also being considered are the 6'6" Jason Deutchman, Glen Bolocon, Christian Luanzon and Neil Raneses. One import slot also remain vacant as of this posting. Virgil Buensuceso who was once rumored to join the team has signed with the PBA D-League and won't be included in the roster.

The 6'10" Fajardo led the UC Webmasters to its first ever CeSAFI basketball title in 2010, the first time the CeSAFI crowned a champion team other than the mighty University of the Visayas Green Lancers. Both Fajardo and Banchero were also considered for the Smart Gilas Philippine national basketball team but were unable to suit up for various reasons.

Philippine Basketball's 6'10" giant to Return Soon

After sitting out the last season and majority of his second year with the Yeomen, Gian Chiu is expected to return to action for Oberlin College for the 2011-2012 season. The 6'10" Philippine basketball player logged 19.8 minutes in 25 games during his first season with the Yeomen, averaging 5.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.5 blocks, 0.2 steals on 46.2 percent field goal shooting and 61.2 percent free throw shooting. Along with Mike Loll, Chiu topscored with 15 points for the Yeomen in a 78-56 loss to Kenyon on February 13, 2008. In that game, he shot 5 out of 6 from the free throw line and 5 of 8 from the field while also grabbing 3 boards. In his sophomore season he played just 6 games averaging 0.7 points, 0.7 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.2 steals, and 0.3 turnovers while shooting 40% from the field and missing all 2 of his free throws.

His return to the Yeomen's roster is very much anticipated by Philippine basketball fans who are eager to get a glimpse of the 6'10" kid who is being touted as a possible future member of the Philippine national basketball team. Pampanga native Jericho de Guzman, the once mysterious lanky 7-footer, has traveled far to but come back to Philippine shores and, hopefully, finally play college basketball starting the NCAA 2011-2012 season. De Guzman is redshirting for the College of St. Benilde Blazers after stops and tryouts at Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University, San Sebastian College and Martin Methodist College, an NAIA Division III school in Illinois. De Guzman, who has been diagnosed with scholiosis, hopes to make the most out of the experience as many eyes will be watching him.

He benches 275. Born April 20, 1989 , Geverola traces his roots to Davao, Philippines. This Clover Park HS alumnus(Tacoma, WA) hopes to turn professional in the Philippines soon. After a forgettable stint at the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, former CeSAFI juniors MVP John Marty Pearce has decided to return to Cebu. Pearce is now in residency at the University of San Carlos and is expected to give the Warriors an extra boost at the point guard and wing spots. Prior to his return to Cebu, Pearce tried out with NCAA teams San Beda College and Jose Rizal University while skipping a tryout at University of Perpetual Help. At USC, Pearce will join an already potent backcourt that includes CeSAFI 2009 Mythical Five awardee Giovanni Padillo, former UPIS point guard Jacques Andre Bautista, former USC juniors scoring machine Nilton Otida, sharpshooter Michael Cantonao, former UC juniors top scorer Mark Panerio and rookies Chino Uy, Jr. and Mico Santos.

In 2007, young Jerrod De Ocampo came in with his dad to the Philippines and got a spot in the PCU Dolphins' Nike Summer League roster. He played 3 games scoring only 2 points and grabbing 2 rebounds then he had to head back home to the news of her mother's death. Now 21, De Ocampo is considering a comeback to play college basketball in the Philippines. University of San Carlos of the CeSAFI has expressed interest in trying him out as part of efforts to shore up a very thin frontline.

Future Philippine basketball star Japeth Aguilar(6'9" C) finally saw some action for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the current season logging 8 minutes of playing time contributing 2 points and a block while he also had a turnover and made his only attempt in a 99-76 over Troy. Aguilar, the first Philippine-born NCAA division 1 player missed much of last season and the early part of this season due to injuries. Western Kentucky's next game is against UALR on January 3 and hopefully Japeth gets into the action.

Philippine Basketball NT Captures 1st ASEAN-CBO Title

Serbian coach Rajko Toroman guided the Philippine national development pool for men's basketball to the 1st ASEAN-CBO Men's Basketball Invitational crown in Pingguo, Guanxi, China. The Philippine basketball team walloped Vietnam, 108-62 in their initial assignment then trounced Brunei Darrussalam in the second game, 112-47 before surviving a scare by Singapore, 74-64. In the semifinals, the Philippines whipped Macao, 118-59 and then hung on for a 76-72 final victory over hosts China. Greg Slaughter(6'11" C), Terrence Theophile(6'7" F), Mark Barroca(5'10" ), Dylan Ababou(6'4" F) and Joey Deas(5'10" PG) were all instrumental in the Philippine campaign.

Philippine Basketball Collegiate Championships: Zone 3 & 4 to Complete Sweet 16 Cast Soon

The Philippine Collegiate Championships(formerly the Collegiate Champions League) is the one and only true national collegiate basketball championship and is fast becoming a byword in Philippine basketball. The PCC Sweet 16 will commence on November 24 at The Arena in San Juan, a knockout tournament that will determine the 2008 champion in Philippine collegiate basketball.

The 8 teams that have garnered outright entries are all eager to hit the ground moving. In the past week, the University of the East Red Warriors, the Mapua Cardinals, Arellano University Chiefs and and Lyceum also formalized their entry into the Sweet 16. As of this writing, The Letran Knights and the USJ-R Jaguars have made headway in Zone 3 qualifying winning their initial assignments over ACLC Ormoc and WNU respectively.

FEU, USC, University of Mindanao, Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro College and Ateneo de Zamboanga get their chance in Zone 4 qualifying this weekend.
