The 2011 MBC National Choral Competition - Winners (updated)

The 2011 MBC National Choral Competition

As a special Christmas treat for the public, Manila Broadcasting Company will again mount the MBC National Choral Competition as core segment of our Paskong Pinoy celebrations. The programme will feature choral competitions in two divisions – Children’s Choirs and an Open Category .

The Semi-Finals will be from December 5 to 8, and the Grand Finals will be on Dec 9, 2011. All shows are open to the public.

The champion in each regional contest will receive a cash prize of P15,000 outright, plus a travel subsidy to help cover the group’s fare to Manila, which will be given to them upon booking their trip. 2nd and 3rd placers who qualify for the semis with a score of 91% and above may compete in Manila but will have to cover their own expenses, or secure sponsors in the regions to help defray these costs.

Each of the choirs that qualify for and compete in the semifinals are guaranteed P7,500 take home prize, and shall be given plaques of participation on the night they compete. Daily winners on each semifinal night will receive P15,000 each.

For the Grand Finals, the winning choirs will receive trophies plus cash prizes as follows:

Children’s Division

Fourth place P 15,000 and trophy
Third place P 30,000 and trophy
Second Place P 50,000 and trophy
Champion P100,000 and trophy

Open Category

Each of four runners-up P 10,000
Fourth place P 20,000 and trophy
Third place P 40,000 and trophy
Second place P 75,000 and trophy
Champion P150,000 and trophy

Special awards for Best Show Choir (P10,000) and Best Original Arrangement for a Novelty Number (P10,000) shall also be given during the grand finals.

World Choral Day 2011 on December 11

What is the World Choral Day?

The World Choral Day is an international choral event to extol the values of solidarity, peace and understanding, an initiative of Alberto Grau from the Latin American Vice-Presidency of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM). It was proposed and approved by the General Assembly of IFCM held in Helsinki in August, 1990, within the framework of the 2nd World Symposium on Choral Music, stated:

"The world is living through severe and continuous crisis of self destruction. There are no possible reasons that can justify these actions. The majority of the human race wants to live in peace with dignity. It is time to show, with more power and strength, that our choral family contributes, through music to break down the artificial barriers product of politics, different ideologies, religious differences, and racial hatred that separate human beings. We must be able to show that MUSIC, the divine art, is more than the mere search of formal perfection and interpretative beauty, music should serve to extol the values of solidarity, peace, and understanding . We cannot work isolated, we have to make all possible efforts to have our voices heard and to let music work its own paths of communication."

How do we celebrate World Choral Day?

Thousands of choirs have already joined in the annual celebration of World Choral Day. It is celebrated on or around the 2nd Sunday in December and has been celebrated for the past twenty years. Millions of choral singers across the globe have been involved in World Choral Day concerts, festivals, sing-alongs, choral seminars, Days of Friendship and other events...

A World Choral Day event may take many different forms. However, it typically includes this: someone reading the World Choral Day Proclamation (here it is in Filipino). It has thus far been translated into many different languages and is available for download from the World Choral Day and IFCM websites.

The UP Concert Chorus in Reason for the Season 2011

Friends of Korus Foundation, Inc. presents The University of the Philippines Concert Chorus in "Reason for the Season: A Christmas Concert".

Watch the ALIW Awards Hall-of-Famer in "Reason for the Season: A Christmas Concert" on the following dates:
December 10, Saturday at 7 pm, and
December 11, Sunday at 5 pm,

Both concert dates will be at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium, College of Music, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

A preview for UPCC's 50th Anniversary in 2012

"Reason for the Season" ushers in the most wonderful time of the year with a superb selection of home-grown choral masterpieces and international spiritual hymns, including the Philippine debut of Cantus Natalis, a large work by American composer Z. Randall Stroope, to be accompanied by the UP String and Brass Ensembles. This year's concert is also the grand launching of "Singkwenta Singkwela!," the UPCC's 50th anniversary celebrations for 2012.

Special guest artists include UPCC alumni Ms. Nanette Inventor, Manny Aquino of premiere Pinoy a cappella group The Tux, and Dot Balasbas-Gancayco of the Opera Band, along with Boscorale, grand champion of the 2011 Korus Klef Youth Choir Festival. Members of UPCC Batch '81 will also be joining the festivities, in celebration of their 30th anniversary.

The events are presented by the Friends of Korus Foundation, Inc, supported by online media partners ClickTheCity.com and PhilippineChoirs.blogspot.com.

Tickets available at the gate are Php300 each, with preferential rate for students and senior citizens (valid ID required) at Php 200. A "Barkada" rate (group of 10 people) can also be availed at the same preferential rate.

Maestro Ryan Cayabyab leads a Thousand-Voice Choir, a group formed by the Philippine Choral Directors Association (PCDA) comprising choirs of active PCDA members from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and a 60-piece orchestra including the Manila Symphony Orchestra, with special guests Lea Salonga, KC Concepcion, Piolo Pascual and Ariel Rivera in a Christmas concert like no other!

San Antonio de Padua Chamber Choir Free Concert on July 15

In celebration of its 120th year, the Minore Basilica of San Sebastian brings you, the San Antonio de Padua Chamber Choir with Choirmaster Alfie Malana Jacinto in concert on July 15, 2011, 7PM, at the San Sebastian Church in Quiapo, Manila.

The San Antonio de Padua Chamber Choir (SADPCC) is a youth-oriented catholic church-based choir with members from different high school and college choirs in the area. They have consistently been making a name for themselves in the local choral circuit, winning 2nd runner up in this year's Musica FEUROPA Chorale Competition 2011 and 1st runner up in the 1st Pedrista Chorale Festival. In 2010, they were Paskong Himig sa Pasig 2010 Grand Champions.

The ACGC presents HANDOG: European Tour 2011 Homecoming Concert

In celebration of the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club (ACGC)'s 90th year, the group embarked on a highly successful 81-day tour of Europe, "In eXCelsis" where they performed and competed in various concerts and competitions.

Over the course of the tour the ACGC received such overwhelming support and as a humble way of giving back, the ACGC cordially invites everyone to their thanksgiving homecoming concert, "HANDOG: European Tour 2011 Homecoming Concert" on July 30, 2011, 6pm at the PhilamLife Auditorium, UN Avenue, Manila.

The concert will showcase selections both from their competition and concert repertoire, which they performed in Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Switzerland, France and Bulgaria.

In eXCelsis, ACGC International Concert Tour 2011

As part of the "In eXCelsis tour, ACGC joined the 33rd Varna International May Competition held in Varna, Bulgaria where there received the top prizes including the First Prize in Mixed Choir Category and the Best Interpretation of a Bulgarian piece in the said competition, and qualified then to compete for the European Chorale grand prix in 2012.

ACGC also got the coveted First Prize, the People’s Choice, the Compulsory Work’s Prize, and the Program’s Choice and its Interpretation Prize in the 47th Montreux Choral Festival held in Montreux, Switzerland.

More awards from the Harmonie Festival 2011 held in Lindenholzhausen, Limburg, Germany including Third Prize Mixed Choir Category and First Prize in Folk Song category, and a Second Place win in the 11th Mednarodno Zborovsko Tekmovanje Maribor (International Choral Competition Maribor) held in Maribor, Slovenia.

Celebrating Faith & Music: Sacra e Seculare

In the last ten years, the number of available options for music consumption has increased tremendously. There was a time when music as video was considered avant garde, but now, music has taken on forms that make it possible for one to ‘carry’ thousands upon thousands of playlists in one’s pocket. The fundamental joy of experiencing music is now nomadic --- much like the rest of humanity.

Now that music has gone massive, the idea of sitting down to enjoy music being performed right in front of you seems nostalgic—even ancient. Why leave the tower when you can experience the land below from where you stand? Why exert effort when you can replicate the experience remotely?

On a quiet summer night in April, the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus showed us why.

“Sacra e Seculare” was a celebration of Christianity through the music of the masters that the world has inadvertently “forgotten”. Conductor Emmanuel de Leon Jr., an emerging musical talent from the University of the Philippines College of Music, led the audience through the peaks and valleys of faith and belief, through pastures of green and deserts of gold, and most importantly, back to the primordial and infinitely satisfying pleasure of music performance.

The great Georg Handel’s “Dixit Dominus” opened the evening, letting the Psalms wash over the audience in refreshing strums and vibrations. From the shepherds’ fields, we were led to the depths of emotion. The “Lamentations of Jeremiah” by Z.Randall Stroope and the conductor’s very own composition “Kyrie” were such studies in despair, supplication and how it leads us to strengthened faith. Mendelssohn’s Psalm 43 was such a powerful piece; language seemed to melt and the music spoke for itself.
Such is the command of truly glorious music.

From depths of despair we were led to the heights for salvation. Joseph Jennings’ infectious Negro spiritual “Way over in Beulah-land” is a delight. Anton Bruckner’s “Te Deum” was a light from heaven, showing us the path to happiness. The spectacular UP Concert Chorus filled the Church of the Risen Lord with such life that evening. This is not music performance, this is music being brought ALIVE.

Conductor De Leon thanked his colleagues and mentors for the evening, but took special mention of The One who made music happen. And we bet even HE would prefer this evening over his iPod.

‘Sacra e Seculare’ was presented by the Friends of Korus Foundation in cooperation with the University of the Philippines College of Music Conducting & Choral ensemble Department and with the support of Tsoko Nut Batirol and Procter & Gamble Philippines.

Social Media and how Choirs can harness their potential

Social Media sites have changed the way people interact. From Friendster to Multiply, MySpace to Twitter and Facebook, these Social Media sites have allowed us to engage with each other like never before. For one, I don't even need to ask your "likes and dislikes", all I need to do is look it up on your Profile page.

Now here are some insights on how Choirs can harness these Social Media sites to their full advantage. It is a revolution in interaction, so don't be left behind!

Social Media sites are a direct link to your fans

It doesn't matter if you're a hugely popular multi-awarded choir or a small parish choral, you will have fans who are interested to know when your next concert will be or if you won in the recent choral competition you joined.

Build your fan base - if you're a school-based choir, your classmates, teachers and friends may want to follow you on Facebook. If you're a church based choir, your Parishioners may want to connect with you on Twitter (even the Pope invites his priests to blog, so I suppose announcing your choir's FB account after a mass will be okay too right?).

Once you've built up your fan base take a step back and realize - be it 80 or 8000 Facebook fans, these people are your audience - they are the ones who attend your concerts; they are your target market - your ads and events should appeal to them; and so your interaction with them becomes much more meaningful.

You've Got the Whole World In Your Hands

If you're a choir of international stature, you have joined international choral festivals and competitions, then use your Social Media sites like a calling card. Extend your interactions to international relations - announce your Social Media sites during concerts and include them in your souvenir programs.

If you're going on tour, build up excitement before you even arrive. Post photos and videos of your performances to get people more interested to see you perform live!

From there your fans from all over the world can interact with your choir and its members. Stay connected so that on your next trip, they will come again with more friends and family to watch you perform.

Connect and Interact with other Choral groups

From experience, if your choir plans to go on tour, connecting with a local choir at your destination is a wonderful way to go about it. You can learn from each other, share choral pieces, and learn about the culture of the host country first hand. It is a wonderful experience to connect with people of a different culture but share the same interest and passion in choral singing.

You can try this on Twitter, where you can say, search for "madrigal choirs" or "church choirs" and follow them and interact with them.

Mini SEO lesson for Choirs

People nowadays turn to the internet for information. When a company wants a choral group to sing for their corporate event, they go to Master Google.

Just like for any other keyword, what the search engine puts at the top of the list gets the most clicks. For choirs looking for "business", i.e. if you're raising funds for an upcoming concert or tour, you can take advantage of more bookings online.

Say for example, a company goes to Google and searches for "Filipino Choir for corporate events", it would be in your favor if your choir's website appears on the top of the list or at least on the first page.

On another front, if your choir maintains a website, you would want to have that appear at the very top of the list when they search for your choir on Google.

You can sell your music online

MySpace, in particular, allows people to sell music online. A lot of budding artists are able to sell original music that way. I would say this is a largely untapped market for Filipino Choirs, maybe your choir would be the first to break into that business. Let me know if you do!

Make it a Formal Position in your organization

Lastly, because of all these tips about harnessing the power of Social Media for your Choral group, one final advice I will give is to make the position a formal part of your group's organization. It may be elected or appointed, whatever suits you. You can also integrate it with an existing role, say for the PRO - include in his responsibilities the management of the Social Media sites.
