Civil Service Professional - Computer Assisted Test Example (written by Rational)

This is his/her experience while he/she was taking the Computer-Assisted Test (Professional Level). Thank you for this Rational, I think you are super smart and gifted with a wonderful memory, you are a treasure.

"Here are some questions I answered during a Computer-Assisted Test (Professional Level) two weeks ago. This is just from memory so they might not be very accurate.

There are a lot of items about re-arranging the order of the sentences to form substantive paragraphs. This took so much of my time. They are using lengthy sentences with lengthy words.

Simplify 1344/3008.

One problem used exponents but since they are using an old-school DOS application, one term was expressed like this: x2 (x squared).

In grammar, the proper usage of I/me in sentences were asked.

Word Problem: A girl bought mangoes at P7.50 each. There were two types of mangoes: good ones and not so good ones. She sold the good ones at P7.90 each and the not-so-good ones at P7.70 each. If she earned P34, how many mangoes did she buy?

Word Problem: A pipe can fill a water tank at X hours. Another pipe can fill a water tank at Y hours. If both pipe are used to fill the tank, how many hours would it take? (I can't remember X and Y)

If the president and the vice president die, who should replace them? (Can't remember the choices, just the answer: senate president)

You are a principal of a school. The school is expanding and the houses in the vicinity must be destroyed. What will you do? (i can remember two choices out of five: support the people, file leave of absence so you don't have to worry about it)

How many days are allowed to respond to letters/telegrams? (15 working days (answer), 15 calendar days, 7 working days, 10 calendar days, 10 working days)

How many committees of five members can you form with eight people?

There are -a lot- of math problems (solving fractions, word problems, pattern recognition, time problem, etc). No area problems

The test is 170 items, 20 items for personal info 21 onwards is the test proper. Questions 21-(around 110) are about grammar, re-arranging sentences, and reading comprehension (making sense out of the paragraph - selecting the statement implied by the paragraph). The last item in some categories are in Filipino. There are less than 10 questions in Filipino. 111 onwards are math problems and general info questions.

It was programmed by someone named Glenn Arcilla or Arcillas. It was only shown in the splash screen before the test starts.

The schedule for the exam is 7:30 and 11:30. You can be late for a few minutes because examinees will be called one by one to verify that the data they encoded in their system is correct. There will also be an audio-visual presentation regarding the software. After watching the video and data verification, examinees will proceed inside the office to sign the seat plan. Then, there is a locker inside the room where you can put your things. After putting your things in the locker, you can proceed to your assigned computer. All examinees should be seated before they can start the exam. We started around 12:30pm.

A strip of paper containing some codes will be distributed. Examinees should enter the examinee number and the code in the strip of paper.

The program has a 10-minute practice test.

You can bring water with you during the test.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER the exam, your score will be displayed.

Very few passed the exam. After the exam, there are two sheets of paper. One for those who passed and another for those who did not. All scratch papers must be returned.

About thirty minutes after the exam, the certificates were distributed.

Last Tips for Sunday's Civil Service Exams

Last tips:
1. Finish the exam. Guess the answer if it takes too long to solve. Don't leave one item blank. If you ran out of time, shade randomly. Don't be afraid to erase wrong answers.
2. For snacks, I would recommend chocolate bars (Cloud 9, Snickers, etc.) or chocolate drinks. Anything that could release the stress.
3. Pray before the exam.
4. Pee and don't drink too much water before the exam. If you feel the need to pee during the middle of exam, think of Kim Kardashian if you're a guy, or for gals, fantasize on whoever Christian Grey that comes to your mind. LOLS
5. Listen to the proctor carefully. Pay attention.
6. Ask for the time left if you feel worried.
7. Answer fast but think carefully.
8. There will be lots of errors in the exam, questions that are unsolvable, same answers/choices but different letters. Try troubleshooting it first, eliminate some answers and choose your answer carefully.
9. Ask for blessings and luck from your love ones.
10. Lastly, don't forget to give me something to work on. Please come back to this site and post some of the questions.

Repost: What to Prepare the Day Before the Exam

The day before the exam..

Prepare the following:

1. Notice of assignment / Examination permit. Once you got it, photocopy it in case it gets lost.

2. Pencil, sharpened, No. 2. bring at least two so that you will always have a spare every time one gets too short to use or gets broken.You need the pencil to mark the answer sheet. Be aware: Do NOT use ballpen for marking the answer sheets. Focus and minimize mistakes during the marking.

3. Sharpener. Bring one, you don't know when bad luck will strike, maybe all pencil leads get broken during travel.

4. A Staedtler Eraser. Bring a very good eraser. Don't be afraid to erase mistakes while marking the answer sheets, one sure correct answer is very important in passing the exam. If you have mistakes at marking up your answer sheet, it is important to erase all the marks at the wrong answer. A Staedtler eraser is a good eraser. Don't use those cheap ones, you'll get your answer sheet smudgy. The answer sheet is your only lifeline in passing the exam.

5. Ballpens. Bring two, in case one won't write. Sign pens are recommended, since it is known not to fail. I brought my techpen at the exam. Beware: You only need the pens for filling up your personal information at the beginning of the exam. Make sure you switch from pen to pencil on answering your answer sheets.

6. The same ID you used to apply for the exam. The proctor will check this before the exam along with the examination permit. They have a master list, with your pictures on it, just like in the election.

7. Snacks and Water. During the exam, it is important to feed your brains. Vitamin Water or Energy Drinks, Chocolates and Biscuits. You must buy chocolate bars, as it is the most refreshing and easier to eat. It stimulates your brain.

8. Clothes to wear. Prepare your most comfortable clothes and shoes. You'll be sitting there for almost five hours. It is important that you are comfortable with what you wear.

9. Money.

Then have a good night sleep to prepare yourself for a stressful day of the exam.

Answer Sheet and How to Answer

For those who are wondering what a Answer Sheet for Civil Service Exam Professional and SubProfessional looks like, it is similar to these pictures.

Just fill the whole space with pencil. The machine will just scan the marks, if you have other marks on the other choices, make sure to erase them completely as it will be considered wrong if the computer find other mark on the number. It is really okay to erase, don't be afraid to erase, I've done like almost 20 erasures during the exam because I have shaded a problem on a different number, instead of shading 92, I shaded

the answer on 91 (which I skipped because I was not sure of the answer, I was going to go back to it when I have time), and I was already answering 100 when I realized that I was putting it on 99 and I have to adjust all the my answers and find where the problem started, so I have to read the questions again if all the answers was right. This could also take away your valued time during the exam, so make sure to avoid mistakes like this.

The Verbal Level generally involves verbal/language usage, this is a difficult part for some (like me). It
includes verbal analogies (the hardest part) to sentence arrangement (easier part).

The Analytical Level involves both Math and English problems. It is more of LOGIC e.g. EYES is to SEE as EARS is to ______ or 81 is to 9 as 9 is to ______. This is the fun part of the exam but also a mindtwister.

The Numerical Level involves Math Word Problems. This is the most time-consuming part of the exam and also the less difficult for some, especially if you are okay with your algebra classes. For some, this is also the part where they need more practice. Practice makes the problem easier. That is why I really took some time to encode my solutions to the reviewers. General Information involves current events and laws and government conditions. I sucked at this level badly.

Clerical are more of alphabetical arrangements as what I heard, I did not experience this type of exam but maybe I will file for subprofessional exam just for the fun of taking it.

Professional and Sub-professional Levels

IMPORTANT:
• THE INFORMATION ON THE CAREER SERVICE EXAMINATIONS CONTAINED HERE ARE GENERAL IN NATURE.
• THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION (CSC) ISSUES A CORRESPONDING EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE CONDUCT OF THE CAREER SERVICE EXAMINATIONS.
• APPLICANTS ARE ADVISED TO CHECK OUT THE EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PARTICULARS AND/OR UPDATES ON EXAMINATION RULES, REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE.
• IN ANY CASE OF INCONSISTENCY, THE EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT SHALL PREVAIL OVER THIS GENERAL INFORMATION.

A. QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE CAREER SERVICE EXAMINATION (CSE)
• Career Service Professional and Sub-professional examinations are open to applicants regardless of educational attainment.
• Applicants for both levels must:
– Be Filipino citizens, at least 18 years old, and of good moral character;
– Have no criminal record or have not been convicted by final judgment of an offense or crime involving moral turpitude;
– Have not been dishonorably discharged from military service or dismissed for cause from any civilian position in the government; and
– Have not taken the same level of career service examination within three (3) months from last examination taken.

B. MODES OF TAKING THE CSE
The Career Service Examination (Professional and Sub-Professional levels) may be taken through either of the following modes:

1. Paper and Pencil Test (PPT)
The CSE-PPT is conducted nationwide twice or thrice a year subject to the approval of the Commission. Filing of applications for the CSE-PPT is through the CSC Regional or Field Offices.
Applicants are advised to refer to the Examination Announcement, which the CSC officially issues for each schedule of the CSE-PPT.

2. Computer Assisted Test (CAT)
The CSE-CAT is conducted at the Civil Service Commission Central Office (CSCCO), IBP Road, Batasan Hills, Quezon City, and in selected CSC Regional Offices (CSCRO) such as CSC-CAR, Baguio City. For the schedule of conduct of CSE-CAT, applicants are advised to coordinate/get in touch with the CSCCO, or the concerned CSCRO. Please visit the CSC website www.csc.gov.ph for the directory of CSC Central and Regional Offices.

C. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Fully accomplished Application Form (CS Form No. 100, Revised 2012). The spaces for “Signature of Applicant” and “Right Thumbmark” on the form should be left blank. These shall be accomplished in the presence of the CSC processor.

2. Four (4) copies of identical I.D. pictures with specifications, as follows:

a. Philippine Passport size (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm or 1.8 inches x 1.4 inches)
b. Colored, with white background
c. Taken within three (3) months prior to filing of application
d. Printed on good quality photo paper
e. In standard close-up shot (from shoulder level up with the head and face occupying at least 80% of the picture and with the name tag positioned at approximately 1 inch or 2.54 cm below the chin)
f. In bare face (with no eyeglasses or any accessories that may cover the facial features)
g. Showing left and right ears
h. Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
i. With neutral facial expression, and both eyes open
j. With full and handwritten (not computer-generated) name tag in the format: First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, and Extension Name (if any),and signature over printed name

3. Original and photocopy of any valid ID containing applicant’s clear picture, date of birth, signature, and signature of the authorized head of the issuing agency such as Driver’s License, SSS ID, GSIS ID, Philhealth ID, current Company/Office ID, current School ID, Postal ID, BIR ID, Barangay ID, Voter’s ID, Valid Passport, or Police Clearance (Note: Any other ID not included in the list shall NOT be accepted)
- IDs with lacking information, particularly the applicant’s date of birth, should be supported by NSO-issued Birth Certificate or Birth Certificate authenticated/issued by the Local Civil Registrar (LCR).

4. Copy of Appointment letter received by the applicant through email (for Computer Assisted Test)

5. Examination fee of Php 500.00 for the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT), or Php 600.00 for Computer-Assisted Test (CAT).”

D. WHERE TO SECURE & FILE APPLICATION FORMS

• Application forms may be secured from any CSC Regional or Field Office, or downloaded from the CSC website www.csc.gov.ph.
• For the CSE-PPT, applications must be filed at any CSC Regional or Field Office. The CSC Central Office (CO) in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, does not accept and process applications for CSE-PPT.
Acceptance of applications shall be on a First-Come, First-Serve basis. Filing of application closes forty-five (45) days before the examination date.
However, applications may no longer be accepted before the deadline if the target number of applicants has already been reached by the CSCROs.
• For the CSE-CAT, applicants must first register in the Online CSE-CAT Application Reservation System (OCARS) on a specified date and time indicated in
the advisory which shall be posted in the CSC website usually on the third Mondays of March, June, September and December of the year.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Successful registrants will get a confirmation and eventually an email notifying them of their assigned date to
personally file the application form at the CSC-CO.
• As a general rule, acceptance of examination applications for both CSE-PPT and CSE-CAT is on a first-come, first-served basis. Failure to come on the scheduled examination date would mean forfeiture of examination slot and fee. No request for re-scheduling is allowed.

E. FREQUENCY OF TAKING THE CAREER SERVICE EXAMINATION
(Based on CSC Resolution No. 1100300 dated March 1, 2011)
• There shall be no limit in taking the Career Service Examination, however, taking the same level of examination, Professional or Subprofessional, either through Paper-and-Pencil Test (PPT) or Computer-Assisted Test (CAT) shall be once in every three (3) months only.

F. SCOPE OF EXAMINATION

Professional Level

In English and Filipino: vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, analogy, logic, and numerical reasoning.

Subprofessional Level

In English and Filipino: vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, clerical operations, and numerical reasoning.

Both levels of the examination will have general information questions on Philippine Constitution; Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees (R. A. 6713); peace and human rights issues and concepts; and environment management and protection.

G. PASSING RATE: Eighty (80)

H. EXAMINATION RESULT

1. CSE-PPT

Results of the CSE-PPT are usually released from three to four months after the examination. The names of passers shall be posted at the CSC website www.csc.gov.ph.
Those who passed the examination must personally claim their Certificates of Eligibility at the CSC Regional Office/Field Office upon presentation of required documents. On the other hand, those who failed the examination may secure a copy of their Report of Rating through the CSC website. No Report of Rating shall be mailed to those who failed. To secure a copy of the Report of Rating, an examinee must key in his/her name, date of birth, examinee number, examination date, and examination type. Thus, examinees are advised to safe keep or remember their examinee number until receipt of the examination result.

2. CSE-CAT

Results of the CSE-CAT are usually released within two to three hours after the examination. Examinees are strongly advised to wait for the examination results. Those who passed shall receive their Certificate of Eligibility, while those who failed shall receive their Report of Rating. Should an examinee fail to claim/receive his/her examination result on the examination day, he/she has to personally return at a later date to claim either his/her Certificate of Eligibility or Report of Rating.
The names of passers of the CSE-CAT examinees are posted at the CSC website by clicking the following link: Online CSE-CAT Result Generation System. A copy of the Notice of Rating (for passers) may also be secured online. However, the Notice of Rating does not in any way replace the Certificate of Eligibility.
Meanwhile, a copy of the Report of Rating of examinees who failed the examinations may also be secured through the CSC website. To secure a copy of the Report of Rating, an examinee must key in his/her name, date of birth, examinee number, examination date, and examination type.

WARNING:

Any form of cheating in any civil service examination shall be considered a violation of REPUBLIC ACT (R.A.) NO. 9416, otherwise known as "An Act Declaring as Unlawful Any Form of Cheating in Civil Service Examinations, Unauthorized Use and Possession of CSC Examination Related Materials, and Granting the Commission Exclusive Jurisdiction Over These Cases Including Those Committed by Private Individuals".
Any person found guilty of an offense under R.A. 9416 may be held administratively and criminally liable.
Any person found ADMINISTRATIVELY LIABLE shall be imposed the following penalties: For one who is in the government service, dismissal from the service including all the accessory penalties of cancellation of eligibility, forfeiture of retirement benefits, bar from taking any civil service examination, and perpetual disqualification from re-entering the government service; and For a private individual, perpetual bar from entering the government service, and perpetual bar from taking any government examination.
Any person found CRIMINALLY LIABLE shall be imposed the following penalties: Imprisonment of not less than six years and one day but not more than 12 years; Fine of not less than Fifty Thousand Pesos (P50,000.00); and the appropriate accessory penalties.

Computer Assisted VS Pencil and Paper Test Civil Service Career Examinations

Here are my thoughts, although I haven't experienced the computer assisted exam

Paper and Pencil Test:
1. more relax.
2. You can easily go back/skip to other part of the exams.
3. We are better-trained to answer this type of exam
4. Better chance in passing the exam (because you will be ranked with other takers, the more difficult the exam, the better chance to pass it)

Computer assisted:
1. If you don't know computer that much, you will be more stressed.
2. it will be difficult to go back to other part of the exam.
3. Answer sheet/form is new to most of the takers, it will time consuming to learn about it.
4. Less chance in passing the exam because Civil Service is designed to only pass those with above average IQ, which is only 20% of the world population. Since it is computer assisted, the passing mark will be fixed and not ranked like in PPT, meaning those with above average IQ are the only one that would surely pass the exam.

It's not about having new review materials..

They are not new materials but you are free to compare them to new materials and believe it or not, the new materials and these old review materials are similar. Civil Service Professional - Paper and Pencil test have been this way for years.

NO CLOCKS?? Why oh why??

During the exam, cellphones and watches with all your personal belongings will be placed below your chair or in front of the classroom. And CLOCKS will also be removed from the classroom.

So, how will you tell the time and how much time is left before the exam ends? The proctor will only announce the time hourly, and 30, 20, 10 and 5 minutes before the exam ends. You can ask the proctor about the time if it makes you uncomfortable. Don't be afraid to ask. Time is very important in taking the exam.

Why were the clocks removed? The clocks were removed due to past cheating scheme in PRC exams where the exams are mostly 50 items, not applicable in Civil Service though. Using the minute hand of the clock, on last hour, examinees will use sign/body languages to share the answers of the number where the minute hand is on. For example, at 04:01, one examinee would point his right foot forward, meaning the answer is A for item 1, at 04:20, he would put his left foot backward, meaning the answer for item 20 is D. The one copying the answer don't have to ask what number the answer D was, he just have to look at the clock in front of the classroom to tell that the D was for item 20 (04:20).

By the way, all questionnaires will be distributed at the start of the exam, it is up to you where you would like to start. As for me, I started at the beginning but got tired of answering about 100 english/grammar questions and skipped right through the Math part at the middle of the exam. You can do that and return to what you have skipped later.

Preparation on the Day of Civil Service Examination

Are you ready for May 22? There is still too much time to study!!

After all that studying, will you be ready for the day of examination?

On the day of examination:

1. You should have enough sleep.
2. You should have eaten your early breakfast. Just light breakfast guys!! Don't let your tummy so full because all the blood circulation will focus on digesting your food and not to the brains.
3. Drink vitamins, this will help nourish your brains.
4. Pray. Pray. Pray.
5. Ask for good luck from your family.
6. Stay calm.
7. Be on time.
8. Drink 2 glasses of water 30 minutes before the exam and make sure you pee before the exam starts. Don't drink too much water though right before the exam started. Have a bottle of water with you so you can sip on it when your mouth starts to dry from answering. Before the exam, the proctor will ask the examiners to takeoff the labels from the bottles of your mineral water or drinks, you can remove them earlier before the exam. This will make you feel that you are ready for the exam when/if the proctor asks to remove the labels. You can strut your unlabeled bottles. LOL.
9. Don't forget those things you prepared before the exam. The list is HERE.
10. Smile. Keep a happy mood.Don't get distracted from other takers. There will be coughs, murmurs while solving difficult questions, crisscrossing, pencils falling.
11. Always listen to the proctor.
12. Keep a sharp mind.

Here are the answers to the Number Analogy Part from the Part II of the Civil Service Examination Reviewer. I have explained number 1 and 2 as reference. I am taking my time to answer the word problems too. Do come back for it.

The answer to item 17 is 3) 0.0375

Make sure to review your arithmetics. Numerical analogy requires a lot of division and multiplication and percentage, decimal conversion to fractions, multiplication and division of fractions, cross multiplication, etc. Review simplification of fractions. Don't use calculator while answering the questions. CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED. Make sure you practice and practice and be very good at it.

SELF-STUDY
At age of 20, I already knew my mental strengths. Everybody should know this once they graduated college. I knew I'm naturally good at math and logic, specifically algebra and word problems. I also know I'm good at sentence construction. So after looking at the reviewer, I evaluated myself. There was a big chance I could pass the exam based on my strengths. I also knew I have a weakness with memorization of laws and difficult word analogies.
What I did was I didn't bother with my weaknesses first but focused on my strength because I know this is the only way I could slightly enjoy a very difficult exam and would be my only ALAS in passing it. I practiced word problems so I could solve it faster and accurately. I did some word constructions problems. And lastly, practiced word analogies to prepare for the whole exam because I also know that this would be the reason I could fail the exam.

Tips:
1. You need to know more than half of the exam coverage to have a chance on passing the exam. If you know your weaknesses are about half of the coverage, then you have to study-harder and faster.. Double-time..
2. Focus first on what is easy for you.
3. I would recommend prioritizing on practicing the MATH problems as this would take time.
4. The exam will be very difficult, even those who came on top would say that.

The Rating System of the Civil Service Career Examinations - Paper and Pencil Test

First thing you should know is that you don't need to get 80% of all the questions right. Nope. It does not work that way!! CSC has a quota!! ..which is 8-12% of the takers would only pass the exam!! Believe it or not, you will be ranked based on your score. The first 10% will get the 80++ ratings, regardless of their scores, percent weight of each category. In our time, the top one got an 89 rating.

Here is a photocopy of my certificate as an example.

The exam is divided into 4 categories, Verbal, Analytical, Numerical and General Information.

I was quite sure I failed the exam because of the verbal usage part, I got 83.72%, which is quite shocking for me at first (since I did not know the score system then) because I'm sure I only got less than 50% correct of the verbal usage exam. It was that difficult! But because the system ranked my score highest to lowest, I got the 83.72% score. I was pretty confident with the analytic and numerical exams though (since this is my thing), I got very good scores while I was practicing on the reviewers. If you noticed I failed in general info, the questions was about laws and constitution and I sucked at it. I barely survived my Political Science and History in college. hehe.

I know this fact and I'm sure about it because it is the same with PRC board exams. They use the same system in Electrical Engineering Board exam, they use the quota system.

When you get your own certificate of eligibility, you have the option to change your picture with the same format, which will be permanently attached to your certificate because the Civil Service dry seal will be pressed on your picture..
