I don't think my experience is unheard of -- it depends on the neighborhood. I'm lucky that so many parents in Mount Airy, for whatever reason, will not even look at the public schools. There was space for my child at the school I wanted, and for other kids that I know. But I was persistent -- I wrote the principal a letter in the fall, followed up with a call, went to the meetings, followed up again, went to her office in the spring. Another friend did the same, over the summer. It can happen (but probably not at Meredith, which has 30 kids per kindergarten class, or Penn Alexander).

I just want to underscore E.M. Stanton. The test scores are good and the Cultural Arts Program we have is awesome. But I was really amazed by the environment at the school. At first, I was afraid of how my suburban kid would handle this urban school. The discipline at the school made for a great transition.

Thank you for posting your perspective. I have often wondered about those of us who wish to send a child out of catchment. I get that your experience may not be a common one, but before this, I was beginning to think that school transfer was a myth.

Equality in education will continue to be a battle for our children attending public, charter, or private school. However, every child has the right by law to a free public school quality education. Taxpayers pay for our public schools even if they don't have school age children. The serious question is: Why are some children receiving access to better teachers, textbooks, and information? When we have budget cuts to education were in trouble. The state Governor has the power to make changes to the system not the President!

To clarify, the West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools is an all-volunteer grassroots group that seeks to bring the community and all of its resources into our neighborhood schools. Our current focus is Lea Elementary but we hope once efforts there are sustained we will be able to expand to other schools in the area. To find out more information about WPCNS and Lea, please visit our website: https://sites.google.com/site/westphillyschools/

Penn is involved in a few other West Philly schools to the same extent as Lea... Comegys, Wilson and Sayre to name a few. Parents like the author of this report, Maurice (the Home and School president) and members of the community (who have nothing to do with Penn) have worked hard to advocate for the programs provided at the school. Also, many of the students at Lea are not in the school's catchment, but have transferred in for various reasons. The school is not at capacity, so it has room to grow.
