Special Guests Speaker and Presenter: Dr. Jo Benoit of Phase III
Dr. Benoit understands the psychology of the experiences and consequences that women veterans face and provides professional counseling and support to women who are victims of MST (military sexual trauma).
She is a sought after speaker and licensed Psychologist with a history of helping those who serve and need help after serving in the military, particularly and especially for those men and women who are having difficulty transitioning to civilian life.

WHAT WE HOPE TO LEARN DURING THE NOVEMBER 12TH ROUNDTABLE:
We want to address the questions that are being asked concerning women veterans and how to get them the help that they need to be whole.
In an effort to provide the necessary platform for disseminating important and necessary information to the veteran’s community, it is our desire to host the “Veterans’ Grassroots Roundtable Discussion” on November 12^th, 2010. We believe that this will be the first of a series of discussions addressing issues concerning the veterans’ community in Philadelphia and surrounding areas on following:

Women Veteran's Business Owner Certification and opportunities
Grassroots outreach and advocacy and their importance in the survival and wellbeing of veterans
What is the incarcerated veterans population and what is their status or situation as a veteran who may or may not qualify for benefits in the VA system
What goals and objectives can be reached by establishing a unified effort and partnership with the Philadelphia VA Facility and grassroots organizations
Program funding for grassroots organizations and process for receiving sub grants through subcontracting and other resources in partnering with the Veterans Administration and other government funded NGOs
Homelessness – what are the real issues involved in this phenomena?
Transparency amongst veterans VA Medical facilities, service organization and the services provided
Establishing a veterans resource and outreach consortium aside from government or government controlled agencies
Oversight and access to government services and funded organizations and
The fallacies of veteran’s health care and employment abilities (what are the employment policies for military
Training for government (all levels) employees on disability sensitivity and problem resolution

Philadelphia VAMC to host STAND DOWN for Homeless Veterans

For the first time in the event’s history, the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center will play host to the Philadelphia STAND DOWN for Homeless Veterans, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 – 13, 2009. The annual event brings together agencies which provide services and information to Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The totally volunteer effort, organized entirely by Veterans, is an attempt to impact and positively change the lives of these homeless Veterans and their families. Upwards of 400 veterans will meet with counselors and peers in an orderly military-style setting, while scores of military, government and civilian volunteers provide them with shelter, food, clothing, medical, dental, and mental health care, hygiene, legal aid, counseling, employment opportunities, chaplain counsel, varied religious services, and meals.

A Veteran’s spouse and dependent children 15 and under may also attend – proof of ID may be required. Free pickup will be made Saturday at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the following Philadelphia sites:

· Outley House, 6901 Woodland Ave.

· Ridge Avenue Shelter, 1360 Ridge Ave.

· Self, 907 Hamilton St.

· Sunday Breakfast Association, 302 N. 13th St.

· Vet Center, 801 Arch St.

There will also be a pickup at 8 a.m. Saturday Sept. 12, at the Chester CareerLink, 701 Crosby St., and at Connect, 135 Long Lane in Upper Darby.

Hosting the event this year takes on added significance as the Philadelphia VA Medical Center was recently named the National Center for Homelessness among Veterans. The center will develop, promote and enhance policy, clinical care, research and education to improve homeless services, so that Veterans may live as independently as possible in a community of their choosing.

“The men and women of the Philadelphia VA have supported STAND DOWN for 15 years and look forward to hosting the 2009 event and serving our Veterans,” said Richard S. Citron, Philadelphia VAMC Director. “STAND DOWN is another excellent example of our partnership with city, state and private groups to reduce homelessness and help Veterans lead healthy, productive lives.”

The Philadelphia VAMC campus is located at 3900 Woodland Ave. in West Philadelphia. Previous STAND DOWN events have been held at the Lighthouse Field on Erie Avenue, and at the Philadelphia National Guard Armory on Southampton Road.

Pennsylvania hosts the 1st Statewide Veteran's Expo -
What was missing? THE VETERANS!

HOWEVER, this was a great opportunity to meet with other individuals and companys that share in the passion for bringing the best opportunities and assistance to veteran service providers and organizations.

The National Alliance of Women Veteran's founder, Cathy Santos believes the benefit and necessity for future events was also shared by Chris Nelson, event coordinator. Chris agrees but stated that "you must talk to my boss". "And we will." Many organizations and corporations there were given the opportunity to speak on their organizations and share their concerns. Philadelpia Veteran's Multi-Service and Education Center was represented by Ed Lowery, Director; Sandy Miller and Marsha Four who also facilitates the "largest women veteran's shelter in the state". Coateville is the home of the Walker House where Marsha provides care and counseling to women veterans.
The Women Veteran's Health Care Center of Pittsburgh was represented by Desmarie J. DeCuir, PHD, CNRP who recently was appointed to the position of Program Director (pictured here with Ralph Davis and Leroy Saunders of Veteran's Affairs).
Also pictured is Mr. Peter Speaks who shared in a panel discussion with other government department leaders in the morning events. Amongst organizations represented were the Small Business Association from Washington, D.C., Harrisburg and Philadelphia, PA.

Annual Jefferson/Jackson event in Philadelphia was stage for Democratic PA Senator to Announce His Recent Party Change and to "THANK" those who warmly welcomed his return.

"THE PRODIGAL SON" returns to his roots as a democrat and promises National Alliance of Women Veterans Founder, Cathy Santos support for the women veterans of Philadelphia. Cathy Santos sought help over the years and personally held once Republican US Senator Arlen Specter responsible for the problems experienced by many women who served in the armed forces and experienced military sexual assault, mainly due to his role and relationship with the "Specter-Cheyney Spying Bill".

Proclamation from City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell presented to Montford Point Marine President, Phila. Chapter Reverend Lawrence Brown and Cathy Santo, Founder National Alliance of Women Veterans, in recognition of Crispus Attucks Day, March 5th is honored here at the "All Colored Soldiers Memorial" Stature at 20th an the Parkway. Crispus Attucks is the first of five men to die in the massacre was a runaway slave turned sailor, Crispus Attucks. His death has forever linked his name with the cause of freedom.
