Jay's favorite band growing up? Metallica. He's particularly fond of their second album 'Ride the Lightning.' 'Creeping Death'--the 7th track on the album--will always hold a special place in his heart. In addition, KJ taught himself to play the drums (in 7th grade) by emulating Lars Ulrich’s skills on ‘The Black Album’—and, as a result, he is one of the best philosopher/drummers in the world (so he assumes). Both still listen to Metallica on a regular basis.

Fellow metal-head and philosopher William Irwin join KJ and Jay in a discussion of the philosophical merits of Metallica.

Some may think of Metallica as lowbrow, but their lyrics and lives are ripe for the philosophical pickings.

Irwin is the series editor for the Blackwell-Wiley’s Pop Culture and Philosophy book series and is the volume editor for Metallica and Philosophy.

Enjoy the episodes and think well! (Oh and ignore the “leadership buzz” bumpers—just some leftovers from the old days. Sorry.)

Episode 4

Of course Eve’s name wasn’t “Steve”…but does that really tell us anything about homosexuality?

Since we recorded the last five episodes on gay marriage, KJ has taught on the issue and made and few discoveries that are relevant to the issue. So we are going to meet up again, this time via phone, and finish our discussion of homosexuality and gay marriage.

Is homosexuality immoral? Should homosexuals be legally allowed to marry? Is the answer to the first question even relevant to the other? KJ and Jay use some more examples from South Park to explore and explain this issue.

KJ highly recommends Jacob Held’s article on this issue in South Park and Philosophy.

Enjoy the episodes and think well!

Oh, and ignore the intro and outro bumpers!
Watson, the IBM supercomputer, just wrapped up a thorough Jeopardy thrashing of Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, the top two Jeopardy champions of all time.

To repeat: Watson--computer--beat the two smartest people ever to play Jeopardy--the linguistically complex game show.

This is a dramatic leap forward from Deep Blue beating Kasparov at chess. This is end-of-the-world, dogs-and-cats-living-together kind of stuff.

And it really raises some interesting questions. If a computer can understand language, what is next? Will we one day have computer that act and look just like us too? Are androids in our future? If so, how should we treat them?

And is Watson the first step toward Skynet? Will a giant computer one day turn against and kill us all, like in Terminator?

KJ and Jay take a look at these issues and more.

KJ and Jay take a trip to hell.

Hell is that wonderful place God sends you to burn forever when you steal a candy bar but die before you say a special prayer of forgiveness.

Is the existence of such a place compatible with the existence of an omni-benvolent (all-good) God? KJ and Jay use a bit of South Park to discuss the existence of the eternal lake of fire.
