Okay, i’ll admit it, i’m guilty of this. One of the most common causes of frustration and friction in relationships is that we don't really listen to each other. Too often we talk at each other rather than with each other. :(Fortunately, listening is a skill that can be developed.
So there is hope, even for moi. :)
The benefits of learning how to listen are enormous: fewer mistakes, better

Sometimes I get into a funk and start thinking about the failures in my life. That's never good. When you and I focus on the disappointments in our lives, it is these very things that will begin to loom even larger.

When you pay special attention to what you lack, you will become even more aware of how much is missing in your life. When you ruminate on what you wish would change in your

“Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.” Song of Songs 4:16

The above scripture is from a book in the Bible. For centuries, pastors used to preach and write about the book, Song of Songs, as a poetic commentary on Christ’s endearing love for His Bride, the Church. They did that because they wanted to avoid the obvious: that the Song of Songs is actually about sex

This week at Alive Church we are going to be talking about investing in others for the sake of something bigger, not just for us personally, but for them. I think many people are looking for authenticity in life.

People should experience authenticity in churches. Authentic fellowship is not superficial, surface-level chit-chat. It’s genuine, heart-to-heart, sometimes gut-level, sharing. It

Relevant: having significant and demonstrable bearing on the matter at hand. This weekend at Alive Church we are going to to be discussing how the church should be relevant. What do you think makes a church relevant? Should churches even try to be relevant? When I younger churches seemed to compete with one another in an effort to be “holier than thou.” I’m glad some of that is past. But the

This week at Alive Church we will be talking about the Bible. It’s important to read the scriptures for yourself and not just relay on other people’s interpretation. When you do it yourself, you may be surprised.

Many people sincerely want to study their Bibles on their own, but they just don’t know how. Where should you start? Is there more than one way to study the Bible? What is the best

Bishop Mervyn Hammond Jr.

Today's Guest blogger, Bishop Mervyn Hammond Jr. is a good friend of mine who has been serving people in the ministry all his life. I admire Mervyn for many reasons but His love for God and for people cause him to stand out among leaders. Here are some of his thoughts. We are a few days away from celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. In light of this,

We've all heard people say, "I took a job I hate in order to make a lot of money, so someday I can quit and do what I love to do." That's a big mistake. Trust me on that, I have tried it. Don't waste your life in a job that doesn't express your heart. You won't be fulfilled. The same is true when volunteering or serving for your church or charity. You need to do it with passion!So....How do

No matter what the pollsters, pundits, or prognosticators claim, or how the Mayan calendar seems to be interpreted by some, no one can accurately predict all that is going to happen this year, let alone the next few days or weeks. Our best forecasts are just educated guesses. Change is not only increasing in speed and intensity, but also in unpredictability. How can anyone succeed when the

Unfortunately anxiety seems to defeat the simple purpose of one of the central messages of Christmas,“peace on earth, good will toward men”, a message delivered directly from heaven to earth. So instead of getting caught up with all the madness of buying gifts and trying to please everyone, try something different. My i suggest you look around and find one less fortunate person or family and

Why am I here on earth? Where did I come from? What am I worth? Do I have any intrinsic value? Do I serve a purpose? These are all important questions. They are life's "big questions."

How you answer these questions determines how you see the world and how you treat others. How you see the world also determines how you see and treat yourself. So, it's important that we resolve these

Happy Thanksgiving! Unfortunately many times the Holidays bring stress. You may be under a lot of stress right now because of the time of year or the economy, or maybe something else, but God still wants you to enjoy life.

He doesn't want you to live without fun. The apostle Matthew spent three years with Jesus and he wrote, "[Jesus] came, enjoying life" (Matthew 11:19 PH).

There is a real push in our society to be successful, especially in these difficult times. I see this in the business world as well as the church realm. Unfortunately in our quest to be successful in our lives we sometimes overlook a very important principle. Caring about people.

I think the number one lesson in life, the number one reason God put us on this earth, is to learn how to love.

If there is any high and low that is greater than any other, it is the high and low of relationships. You can experience the high of joy and the low of disappointment sometimes within minutes of each other. Pretty wild, huh?

Disappointments come into relationships because none of us are perfect. We have an idealized view of love, relationships, and marriage, and when reality doesn’t match

Three years ago I was a broken person. I felt like most people didn’t care about me or my family, I felt like people had betrayed me, I even wondered about God himself! Things were not working out according to my plan and purpose. I became bitter and resentful.
