OTAs Rally in January

The PhoCusWright Online Travel Agency Index outperformed in January, topping the broader market indexes by a healthy margin. The Index was buoyed by TripAdvisor, which rose 35% following its December spin-off from Expedia. On a macro level, the fear of a global recession has receded, which helped bolster the Index as well.

Travel Industry People Probably Don't Care About Foreclosure Reform - But They Probably Should

PhoCusWright would be surprised if many people thought about travel during President Obama's State of the Union address on January 24, except perhaps (depending on one's politics) to think one should flee to Canada until after the election, or that Congress and its 9% approval rating could use a nice, long vacation. But it occurs to us that the travel industry may actually have a bigger stake than is first apparent in one proposal the President mentioned.

Facebook dropped its long-awaited filing for an initial public offering on February 1, chock-full of interesting stuff but short on some of the specifics that many in the travel industry may be most curious about.

Industry Update Summary December 2011

Data released in December paint a picture of a relatively quiet travel industry, with a slight bias to the downside. Hotel occupancy was up, but more modestly than in some months earlier in the year. Airlines revenue passenger miles were basically the same as a year earlier, rising less than half a percent, and yields were up about 10%, which is less than some of the fuel-driven increases earlier in the year. The most notable change was probably a marked decrease in the closely-watched Smith Travel Research forecast for hotel occupancy and pricing in 2012. Smith has cut its 2012 forecast for growth in revenue per available room nearly in half.

Industry Update Summary November 2011

We're back, after the PhoCusWright annual conference and a vacation, and the travel industry's story is pretty similar to when we left: If you look at Main Street America, you think the travel industry is in the midst of a sluggish but definite recovery. The November unemployment report singled out travel as a job-adding industry, though the biggest gains have come from restaurants. If you look at financial markets (and especially if you consider Europe's financial situation), you're much more pessimistic. American Airlines parent AMR Corp. filed for Chapter 11, hotels are continuing to recover, though hotel shares slumped in the last month and online travel agencies' shares reflect each company's unique circumstances.

While margin was down in the first half of the year for the major public online travel agencies, 3Q11 marked an all-time high. We expect 4Q11 to bring a more challenging topline environment, but healthy underlying profit growth is still in the cards.

Industry Update Summary September 2011

There's nothing like a 14% jump in the S&P 500 to brighten the economy's mood, and with it the mood of the travel industry. That's what has happened since the last TravelStats: A decent report on U.S. economic growth, a sort-of resolution of Europe's debt crisis (though, within a few days, the conventional wisdom was moving fast toward "they just kicked the can down the road"), and all of a sudden economists are saying that maybe August was just a bad month and not the beginning of a double-dip after all.The same pattern showed up in travel industry statistics.

Industry Update Summary August 2011

You tell us the path of the economy, and we'll tell you what will happen next in online travel. Even for an industry with a decent bit of secular growth in front of it (especially outside the U.S.), the sector has been as subject to the market's recent wobbles as any other. And those wobbles are all about macro, whether it's the way Priceline stock vibrates to news from Greece or how Expedia's price has dipped recently even as investors should be figuring out how much they have underestimated the value soon to be unleashed by the coming TripAdvisor spinoff.

Industry Update Summary July 2011

Lately we've been talking about travel's "paradoxical recovery," featuring better statistics for both the airline and especially the hotel industry, coupled with a weakening general economy and declining shares as the market bets on the bad macro news to first obscure and then overtake the micro improvements in demand and prices for flights and hotel rooms. This month, the contrast is clearer than ever.
