Lightning Lake

(5 photos total) After Ben & Megan's beautiful wedding Kevin and I returned to our B&B (the E.B. Morgan House) to relax. We sat out on the back porch and watched the lightning storm come across Cayuga lake towards us. This was a special treat for me as I have missed lightning storms like crazy since I moved to California. It was beautiful and awesome and just so so amazing to watch and feel the energy in the air. I loved every minute of it! It took us a while to figure out the right settings on the camera to really get the lightning photos right, but i think we finally got a few. I wish we had figured it all out sooner so I could have gotten more, but I love the ones I got.

(16 photos total) It is the height of Kitten season!! Consider adopting a cat or kitten from your local shelter. There are SO many who really want homes. These are some of the kittens currently up for adoption at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley, in one of the kitten rooms at the Sunnyvale Satellite location in Petco!!

(7 photos total) A week ago I was in Rochester NY visiting my family and we found this Robin's nest. It took some quite, careful sneaking to try not upset the Mom and Dad. I wasn't entirely successful, but I managed not to upset them too much and got a few great shots out of it!

Trixie Does Tricks!

(14 photos total) Trixie is just a little spitfire! One could call her the energizer kitty. She has energy galore in that little body, and she is so entertaining with it. When there is a toy to be got, she gets it good! She is as loving as she is feisty. She is a total cuddlier but she loves her people for play as well. She will be going crazy with her fishy toy and continually bring it over to me to show off what she has. She is very proud of her prowess and she wants you to know it. Or she wants to know what I am doing so she can get involved in whatever it is. She adores a stuffed fishy or mousy that she can carry in her mouth, but the all time best toy is a bottle cap from a water bottle. It just fits on her face so perfectly with grips to hold on. And it rolls around so interestingly. (more in post)

The Pip Man!!

(11 photos total) Pip is the baby of the group. He was the runt when we got him, only 8.9 ounces, 3 - 5 ounces less than any of the others. But what he lacked in size he made up for in spirit! He's a peppy little pip squeak! And he has totally caught up in size as well. He can romp with the best of them but he is also a total lap cat. Curled up right in the center of your lap is the best place ever. Second place goes to long kitten strewn over one of your legs. He is a chatty boy too. He likes to tell you that he loves you and even nose kiss your face. And watch our for that nose as it is often dirty! He has a general habit of ending up with a good amount of wet food on his nose when he is done vigorously eating. He always cleans it but he often misses some. He doesn't mind too much when I help him clean that nose. He idolizes his siblings. He follows them around to join in on their fun. He would really love to be adopted with one of his siblings. Which one, it doesn't matter. This whole group of kittens all just love each other and are pretty interchangeable. (more in post)

Little Miss Harley Quinn

(8 photos total) Harley is the little lady of the group. Don't get me wrong, she LOVES to play and romp, but she is also very dignified. She is a major lover and loves snuggling under your chin. She has a major purr and knows how to use it. And she loves her people. Quite often she prefers the company of her people to that of the other kittens. She will romp with her brothers and sisters but then she will begin looking for us long before the others. She has an adorable little meow that sometimes has purr mixed into it. (more in post)

Life As Bugsy

(14 photos total) Meet Bugsy! We call him the little man. He got his name because he is such a love bug. He plays hard, sleeps hard and loves his people like crazy! His long legs make him a little clumsy right now, but he doesn't let that stop him. He has a HUGE purr and he uses it A LOT!! He also talks to us when he is happy, he chirps to say hi and that he missed you. He loves to take a nap in a lap or at least near his people. When it comes to his sisters and brother he is the instigator. He is often the one yelling "come on, lets play!" But if he gets possession of a toy, watch out, he may not share. He loves to run away with his toys and tease you. He also really likes being up on his hind legs to bat at things. He seems to do it more and more lately. (more in post)

(25 photos total) More pics of our current foster kittens, Bugsy, Harely, Trixie and Pip. These span several weeks. They are getting so big. I no time we will have to give them back. They have been an excellent bunch so far. Only one minor little bug, very well behaved and incredibly loving, espeically for so large a group. These are some of our best kittens, but then I think I say that almost every time. I really do mean it though.

(14 photos total) First set of foster kittens for the year. These 4 bring us to 38 foster kittens as we begin year 5 of our fostering. These are also the smallest/youngest of our kittens ever. 3 weeks old when the came to us. The smallest was 9.3 ouces and the largest was 14.2 oucnes. We have had them almost 5 days now and all have grown more than an ounce and are making huge progressing on litter training, eating on their own and longer time between feedings. Hopefully more photos will come in the future but here is a beginning. No names yet, we are working on that! :)

(20 photos total) First Off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN!! It's a couple of months after their visit, but I figured Brian's birthday was a good day to finish up more photos from Lyndsey & Brian's visit at the end of January. On the day before they needed to head back to Rochester NY, they took an elephant seal hike and then we took a drive up the coast from Santa Cruz towards Half Moon Bay to check out some beaches and the sights. Here are a few photos from that trip up. We even ran into a music video shoot in progress on our drive. Gotta love the beach at Sunset!

The Comic-Con Experience - Part 2

(14 photos total) Picking up where I left off blogging the awesome costumes and people of Comic Con 2010! We had heard so much about it that when our friends asked us if we wanted to go last year, we decided to give it a try. What an experience! It was crazy and fun and exhausting and wonderful. It's not something we will do every year, but every few years would be fun. I took TONS of photos of the costumes people wore and the booth displays and panelists and so on. However I have this crazy backlog of photo processing, most of which should come before Comic-Con. So what I've decided to do is to just add a few photos to this page every now and again as I get them done and not wait on the post until it's totally ready since that may end up taking a couple months. I will update this story in the RSS feed when I add new photos but here is a start. Oh and I will try and identify all of the characters but I just don't know all of them, so feel free to let me know what character that is or correct something I have wrong if you notice it. Just email me at rachel (at) phoenixfeather.net. Also check out my Comic Con Part 1 post. Enjoy!!!

(16 photos total) I'm totally late on posting this, but better late than never! Back in May the Haunters group that I'm a part of created a booth for the local Makers Faire! Makers Faire has always been one of my favorite events so It was particularly awesome to be able to participate as an exhibitor rather than just a spectator. Robert of Mantooth Manner and I headed up the group but we had a bunch of great volunteers. All in all the booth was a HUGE success. The kids just LOVED the booth. With the talking skulls the pop-up head and espeically the pumpkin zombie that they were able to control with the two switches. We met lots of people and got some great new members and more than anything we had FUN!!!!! Can't wait to do it again next year, but in the meantime we have the upcoming main event - HALLOWEEN!!!!!

PHOEbe & NIXie - Awesome Foster Kittens

(47 photos) It's been a crazy couple months and I'm so behind on my photoblog and blogging about our foster kittens. Sadly these guys came and went without my posting. So I'm doing so now. They have just gone up for adoption at the Humane Society (You may have to scroll a page or two to find them in the list) and I couldn't recommend a better pair. We got these guys at about 2.5 or 3 weeks old. They both weighed in at about 15 ozs. Tiny babies! Phoebe did just as she should and grew and was as healthy as a kitten should be. Nixie took a different route and we fought quite a bit to keep her alive. First it was just her body not absorbing her food which resulted in her losing weight. We tried everything and she just kind of yo-yoed around, but we kept going. Finally we found a system that worked and she started gaining and fast. Maybe too fast for her body development to keep up because one night as she was doing better she suddenly failed. We rushed her to the emergency room. I'll spare you all the gory messy details but the result was that she had to stay at the hospital for 20 hours on IV fluids and antibiotics and 18 hours oxygen. When we left her there we weren't sure we would ever see her again. We were pretty broken apart, but kept hoping she would pull through. And she did, like a champ! We brought her home the next evening and she was a thousand times better. Acting better and happier than she had in her life. She was over the hump and the vets were nothing but happy with how she was now. She was particularly hard to give up we had grown so attached through fighting for her life. Someone is in for a real treat when they adopt this little girl. She is pure kitten love!! I expect she will be adopted soon!!

And they eve named her for me: Lorelei Phoenix!! What better present could someone give you!! She is a sweetie and I love her already!! One thing about very little babies, the faces they make are too funny! I know they have nothing to do with us and everything to do with gases and digestion and hunger. This fact does not make them any less adorable or funny. I caught a few of these once she woke up. Super cute girl!!

Good Omens in Kitty Land

(28 photos) These are the first foster kittens of the new year, and it's so awesome to have them so early in the year. We noramlly don't get any till May. These two girls were a little older, about 8 weeks, when we got them a week ago. They had already reached weight for getting fixed, but need a lot of love as they were pretty feral. The black one spat and hissed and even tried to bat at us. And the grey one hissed and cowered. Neither wanted anything to do with us. That has all changed. In just a week they have become playful, affectionate and happy kittens. Both girls are still learning and will occasionally hiss if startled and sometimes hide in a corner if intimdated, but they have made amazing progress and keep making more every day. Most everything they do lately are good omens that they will easily turn into wonderful house cats and even lap cats, in for happy lives with a lucky person.

Naming them seemed a little harder this time. Nothing seemed to fit them just right. The same week we were trying to name them, we were also reading about another kitty on writer Neil Gaiman's blog. His cat Zoe had developed a rare kitty cancer and he wrote some very touching and passionate posts about what he was going through and what she was going through. Kevin had the idea of naming the kittens in memory of Zoe. Only down side is we already had a Zoey over the summer and we didn't want to name another with the same name. The grey kittens name came to us pretty quick after this idea, we would name her Coraline after one of our favorite Neil Gaiman books. Naming the black kitty was harder. I looked up the meaning of the name Zoe and it turned out to be Greek for life. That seemed perfect since we were going to name her in memory of the wonderful kitty life of Zoe. Still it needed to be different. So I looked up other names that also meant life, but I still couldn't find anything that fit. Finally I came up with Zora. It mean Origin. Origin and Life, Zora and Zoe... it all seemed to fit. Like most foster kittens, it is not likely they will keep their names when they get adopted, but for now these two kittens are full of life and a beautiful tribute to the life of another happy devoted house cat.

In addition to the Pirate festival which I posted about several months back, one of the other many things we did there was visit the beautiful Japanese and Rose gardens in Portland. The gardens were beautiful and watching Anya explore the world around her was adorable. We even came upon some accidental weddings in the Rose garden. It was peaceful and beautiful and so much fun!!

Little Big Planet - Part 1 - Muir Woods

(20 photos) So after Halloween we still had Lyndsey and Brian (my sister and brother-in-law) here for a few more days. And we wanted to do something California. So I planned out Monday for with two outings special just for them. The first was for Brian. Let me tell you about my brother-in-law! He is the biggest guy I know. I don't mean overweight or anything, he is just big. He is 6' 7" tall and built to proportion (he is not a skinny stick) If you look at him without reference you assume he is a normal guy. I had an old photo of Lyndsey and Brian in front of a waterfall. I would show it to people and they would say "Wow, your sister is small!!" "No no no..." I say, "My sister is an inch or two taller than me." (I'm 5' 4"). "Ooohhhhh!" is the usual response. He is a bear of a guy, but he is also a teddy bear. You couldn't meet a nicer guy. And he LOVES nature. He is an environmental scientist, and an outdoors-man! He LOVES trees!! I think he likes them because they are naturally bigger than him, but even so, I don't think anything had ever really made him feel small, just maybe smaller. I knew he wanted to see redwood trees, but I knew we didn't have time for Redwoods National Park or Sequoia National park. So I went for the next best area thing; Muir Woods National Park just north of San Francisco. I had been there once about 9 years ago when Ryan took me there, so I knew it was awesome! Brian was like a kid in a candy store. He couldn't believe how amazing the trees were. We totally did not plan for enough time and will have to go back next time Brian comes out, but we had a wonderful time, as you can see!

(35 photos) We got to go to our first roller derby bout this last weekend. It was so much fun. We learned a few things about where to sit next time and how to understand more of the game. It was really a lot of fun and the KillaBytes were very good! Especially Zootown Throwdown who was super fast and Postal Servix who aggresive and tricky and scared the other team. Plus we won!!! There was another bout after the one we watched but we couldn't stay for it. Next time!!

Not only did we expand, more than doubling our size, by continuing a full U-shaped path into our co-conspirators yard (The Awesome Lendvays), but we also added 15 actors throughout the haunt.

(7 photos) We got to visit Alessandra, Mark and Anya in Portland a couple weekends ago. I have a ton of photos from this trip, but I thought I would start with our visit to the Portland Pirate Festival. It was a lot of fun. We missed a lot of the demonstrations because they were trying to break the world record of pirates talkin' like pirates in one place. This kind of shut down a bunch of the festival. But we shopped and wandered and had a good time anyway!! And Anya seriously makes the cutest little pirate ever!!! Under The Bridge!

Newest In Kitten Fashion!

(22 photos, 1 video) Last Wednesday the kittens all had their little spay and neuter operations and then came back to us to heal. We needed to keep them from licking or biting their wounds, which was not easy. Especially since they were all hopped up from the drugs they had had for their operations. So we made little collars for them out of office depot hanging folders. Aren't they cute?!

He was tiny and and pathetic. In just a week so far he has filled in some and become a boisterous happy little boy ready to take over the world!

(51 photos, 1 video) We LOVE shooting fireworks in the abstract and the best place we have found to do it is from Brown Island, watching the Friday Harbor, San Juan Island fireworks on the 4th of July. You are watching almost from behind and right below without having to fight the crowd. It is a first class seat for beautiful fireworks over the water. And of course as always abstract fireworks are just one of our favorite things to shoot. To see past years' abstract fireworks shots check these out...

(16 photos) Zoey leaves us on Wednesday! We have done our job and Zoey has come a long way since coming to us. She is now a love bug who is ready for her own home. She is still not great at first meetings, but I think she will do fine. However before she goes, I thought I would try a few of the Halloween costumes I have on her. Here are the results. Beautiful Zoey

Zoey The Adorable

(19 photos) Zoey comes from a litter of 5 where the larger kittens picked on her and made her rather afraid of everything. When she came to us she was very timid and didn't even know how to play, now she is a pro!! She is still timid about some things, but after just over a week she is blossoming and will be a great little lap kitty for someone. She will likely do best if there are not dogs or kids (at least until she has grown up a little and come out of her shell more), but she is already adapting to other cats and with some patience she will be a true love bug for some household!!

We hadn't seen him since he was in our wedding and then met us in NYC after our second reception, so that was back in September/October. It was a wirlwind weekend complete with lots of drinking (including a bar in SF where I could not take photos), The Sunnyvale Art and Wine Festival, Backyard cooking out, iFly tunnel flying, mini golf and just some good hanging out with friends. Here are a few of the photos and one ifly video from his visit. It was a fabulous weekend, I am only sad that we only had him for such a short time.

By 4pm I was exhausted from sun and walking and overloaded with inspiration, but still eager to see the Eepy Birds! They did not disappoint. Not feeling like fighting the crowds we found a pretty good spot ont he side for a different view than in the videos and it was awesome. There are some shots of their amazing Coke and Menthos geyser performance.
Max's 6th Birthday

(42 photos) I really can't believe Max just turned 6 years old. I have gotten to photograph every birthday except his actual birth. In fact, Kerah actually interviewed Kevin for Google ON her due date with Max and then just this last year Max was the ring bearer in Kevin and my wedding. Max is AWESOME! He is sweet and kind, totally into science and playing music and sports. He is an all around, well rounded, good kid. We love him and are honored to be at his sixth birthday party.

And what a party it was! Max got to invite all his friends from school and tee-ball plus his good friends from the neighborhood and Mom and Dad's friend's kids. It was a great big party with quite a theme. It was a martial arts/karate party at the school where Max is learning Martial Arts. It started with a demonstration by some of the other older kids and young adults and then mini class for Max and all his friends. It was super cute. Then came the piñata in the shape of a number 6 followed by CAKE! Ice cream cake from Carvel! Yum! Then some running and funny walks across the mats to work off some of the ice cream cake and then finally Max got to be the star of his own martial arts movie, complete with the lesson that what you see in the movies and on TV is fake fighting, not real. And of course the all important talk about how we don't use anything we learn outside of the academy. All in all a awesome birthday for an awesome 6 year old!!

(17 photos, 1 video) Bella will be going back to the shelter early Thursday morning to have her operation and go up for adoption. As always we will miss her. I will likely cry as I'm driving away. But she is a complete sweetheart and will find an awesome home in no time. In our last few days with her I figured I should share some more of the photos I've been taking of just how cute she is. I also have a video of her sleeping (which is rather funny) and hope to add some videos of her playing this week before she goes away.

Look At My Garden Grow... Time Lapse Video (update 3)...

(13 photo... 1 video... So far) My very first "Living Photo Story" I decided some stories are a long process and should be told that way rather than waiting for the end to tell the whole thing. So here goes the first one. For Christmas Kevin and I got an AreoGarden from my parents! I have been itching to try it but the first thing I wanted to grow was starter seeds for my outside garden. However I picked the wrong time to order the starter seed kit needed to convert the AreoGarden so it can grow my seeds and not just their pods. I finally got the kit on Saturday and got it planted on Sunday! I have tomatos and peppers and pumpkins and zucchini and sqaushes and flowers galore!! I'm very excited and can't stop checking it. Since the plants get 16 hours of direct sunlight and constant nutrients they grow faster. And since there are blinking lights to tell me when the water is low or they need more nutrients I shouldn't end up killing them till I move them outside. We shall see how this all goes!

Check out of our time lapse video of one week of growth!

(53 photos) Six years ago Kevin and I started our own celebration. It happened something like this: After Easter brunch with a friend in Pittsburgh, Kevin and I returned to his appartment with a few extra hard boiled easter eggs in hand. Kevin's attic appartment in Pittsburgh was across the street from a beautiful cemetery, and as we were getting out of the car we started talking about how the graves should have some more color on Easter, and wouldn't it be fun to have an easter egg hunt in a cemetery.
(17 photos) There are a few things, events, traditions that I am addicted to photographing and will do it over and over again. Shooting peeps is one of my two Easter addictions. I hate the taste of peeps, they are horribly disgusting as far as I'm concerned, but I adore photographing them. And then of course there is my cat Indiana. She is the biggest ham ever and if my camera is out she is trying to be in front of it. I've Even seen her pose and then walk around to the back and try and look at the LCD screen on my D700. I'm not sure she really knows what she is doing, but I'm looking at it so she needs to too. She reminds me of a kid who wants to see herself though.
