Films like PHOOLAN are not meant to be easy to make. In many ways, every documentary begins to resemble the character of the person it portrays. That has certainly been true for us.

Phoolan Devi was a Baghi — a rebel. Somewhere along the road of making this film, we became rebels too. Facing resistance. Confronting setbacks. Refusing to disappear.

At times it has felt like a Greek tragedy set in India — heroes battling demons.

And yet, here we are.

Still standing.
Still moving forward.

Here are just some of the challenges we have faced over the years while making this film:

1. It took 18 months just to get permission to film in India — a process that normally takes two or three months. Somewhere in the system, there were people who clearly preferred that this story remain buried.

2. Then came the real blow. In 2017, our Canadian broadcaster Super Channel went bankrupt. Overnight we lost more than 30% of our budget.

   Many films die right there.

   This one didn’t.

   Because some stories refuse to disappear.
   And Phoolan Devi’s story is one of them.

3. We were deep in negotiations with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the largest talent agencies in the world. Then — boom — COVID hit, and everything collapsed.

And now we are back in the game again.

Setbacks cannot stop us.
As a matter of fact, nothing can.

The film exists.
And we are in the final stretch.
