As a JPEG shooter it is very important to understand how to use and leverage the Highlight Tone and Shadow Tone settings of your FUJIFILM Cameras. This is also handy for those who shoot JPEG + RAW where your JPEG will be produced with your defined settings and while RAW is unaffected by them but great for further fine tuning on your computer.

This will allow you to get the right result in your JPEG straight out of the camera which means little to no post processing needed in your final resulting JPGE image. You can simply download the images to your smartphone or tablet and can share online. Follow me on Instagram @harmeetgabha

In some of the newer cameras the Highlight and Shadow Tone settings are defined under the Tone Curve setting.

Finding these settings

On older cameras like the FUJIFILM X-T3 or earlier you will find these settings via the I.Q. menu and navigating to Shadow Tone and Hight Tone settings.

On newer cameras like the FUJIFILM X-T4 or X100v these two settings are now merged under the Tone Curve settings. The beauty is that here you also get a preview of what your result would look like.

Highlight Tone

In you FUJIFILM camera, Highlights are things we often want to avoid, because these are blown out areas of the image which is 100% white and there is little to no details available. By recovering Hightlights you can sometimes see some details in your image

These settings work the same way as in your favourite editing software (I use Capture One Pro), so when you are + positive value the highlights get brighter while – negative value the highlights are preserved (recovered). You can see that the recovery values are less though in comparison to the brighter values.

Don’t miss the Shadow settings as they are different in FUJIFILM camera.

Shadow Tone

In your FUJIFILM camera, Shadows are the darker, shaded areas of an image so depending upon the contrast or lack of contrast you are wanting to create you can darken or lighten this part of the image using this setting.

However, unlike editing software the shadow settings work differently in the FUJIFILM Camera. When you go into the + positive value, you are darkening the shadows of your image and when you are going into – negative value, you are opening the shadows. This is different to what you might be doing in your favourite editing software (I use Capture One Pro), – negative value usually means darkening the shadows while + positive value means opening (lightening) the shadows.

Examples

Checkout these samples with different settings. The first is the image which Highlights at -2 and Shadows at -2 and these are JPEGs straight out of the FUJIFILM Camera. I’d use these settings when I want to have beautiful and soft looking portraits.

The second is the image which Highlights at -2 and Shadows at +2 and these are JPEGs straight out of the FUJIFILM Camera. This kind of image creates more contrast and depth.

Hope this helps you with setting your FUJIFILM camera the best way possible for you to get the kind of results you want by adjusting the Hightlight and Shadow Tone of your camera.

In my latest video I decided to tackle this question that is asked frequently in several forums online and is something that is new to anyone using or moving to FUJIFILM for the very first time.

Check out the video or continue reading below.

What do you mean?

AF (Auto-focus) point is one of the most common ways to control what your camera focuses on. This is often referred to as Single AF Mode when you select and apply the focus point based on your composition.

The challenge with this approach is that when you move form Landscape orientation to Portrait orientation, then you have to move the AF point again as you recompose your frame. This can take time and also be annoying when you need to move fast.

Luckily the guys at FUJIFILM have thought about this pain and have a solution in their X-Series cameras (probably in GFX as well but never played with them). The solution is quite inginious actually.

This works in both screens the EVF and LCD.

The Solution

FUJIFILM have a solution where you can enable the Saving of AF Point by Orientation. So once enabled this allows your camera to remember by orientation where your AF point was last time you switched to that orientation. So one for Portrait and one for Landscape.

You can do this by navigating to:

AF/MF Menu

Store AF Mode by Orientation

OFF – setting is off, so camera doesn’t remember AF location by orientation

Focus area only – only remember the AF location but not the AF Mode if you change it around.

ON – remembers both AF location and AF Mode in each orientation

As explained in the user manual.

I always use ON as the setting in both my cameras which gives me the option to use different modes in each orientation: Landscape or Portrait.

Once you set you can setup ZONE AF mode in Landscape orientation and have Single AF mode in Portrait Orientation for more precise focusing as an example. Choose the mode that is right for you and will help you get the image you want to capture.

Bonus Tip

While the AF location and mode are remembered by the camera, the Screen overlay of the information remains in landscape orientation which can be a little annoying when shooting in portrait.

To further customise this you can adjust the settings to rotate automatically the Display on your screen.

Navigate to the:

Setup Menu (Wrench Icon)

Screen Set-up

AutoRotate Displays – Set to ON

Now the camera will also rotate the display when your orientation is rotating to Portrait and back to Landscape.

This makes it a lot easier to read the display.

Anyone coming over from Lightroom to Capture One would be confused about the two terms used in Capture: Preset and Style.

What is the difference between Preset and Style in Capture One? Well it is different so here it is…

Preset – Capture One

Preset in Capture One is a Tool that can be saved in defined settings. These can be for example the Exposure tool where you adjust, Exposure, Contrast, Brightness and Saturation. You can modify these as you wish and can save them as Presets, there are several provided out of the box as well (as you see below).

Exposure compensation +1 fstop increases the exposure by +1 on any image you wish to apply this preset.

Exposure – Preset

You can create you own Preset by adjusting the sliders to your liking and then saving these settings via the burger menu and Save Custom Preset. By ticking the Stack Presets option you can stack multiple Preset on top of each other.

Like the Color Balance wheel has multiple uses and you can create the different Presets to create unique colour grading looks that you like.

Color Balance – Preset

Style – Capture One

Now Style is a collection of Tools that have been edited to one’s liking and are used to combine & create a whole look that applies on your image so referring to Lightroom terms a Preset (in Lightroom) is equivalent to a Style in Capture One. Applying a Sytle will apply all the Tools and their predefined settings to the image, resulting in the look originally created and saved under a Style.

Style can also be stacked on top of each other in add then apply in a additive manner to your image. Once applied, you can see which Styles are applied to your image. For example in the image below you see two styles applied: Eterna Film 1 and After Light

Style – Capture One

Conclusion

So in conclusion – Preset is just one Tool with specific settings in Capture One while a Style is a collection of Tool(s) adjusted and applied to an image together. Hope this clears up the difference between the two.

Support this blog by using this link to download or purchase capture one

The post Difference Between Preset and Style – Capture One? appeared first on PhotoInsomnia.

You are interested in finding your FUJIFILM Camera’s shutter count for two reasons – you are curious for your own self or you are buying/selling a camera so you want to know/advertise how used it is.

When buying a used camera you’d want to go for lowest shutter count you can find which will give you most life with that camera.

Shutter count is often also known as shutter actuations which means the up and down movement of the camera’s shutter as it takes a photos. Most camera’s have a limited life rated by the manufacturer for the shutter, however majority of us will change cameras, upgrade etc before reaching this limit.

The tricky thing with FUJIFILM cameras is that many don’t show the Shutter count in any of the Menus. My X100v does have a menu but none of my X-Tx cameras did, nor did the X-Pro3 that I tried. The Shutter count is actually embedded in the JPEG that the camera will produce. You won’t find it in the RAW/RAF file if you don’t shoot JPEG.

FUJIFILM Shutter Count

To find out the shutter count the process is quite easy. Follow these easy steps:

Also another potential risk is that you a pull or tug on the camera could break the USB-C port.

Watch my YouTube video about this Dual Battery Charger

After a close call with my camera the other day where it survived but my XF 10-24mm F4 lens took a bad fall, I decided not to take such risk any futher. I ordered myself a FUJIFILM Dual Battery Charger BC-W235 which will allow me to charge both of my batteries without using the X-T4 for charging.

Dual Battery Charger BC-W235

FUJIFILM Dual Battery Charger BC-W235

This charger comes as it is. You only get the charger, there is no power adapter included in the box when you purchase it. The way it works is that you have to use the Dual Battery Charger together with the USB-C Adapter and cable that ships with your X-T4.

Combined together now it will be able to charge two NP-W235 batteries in parallel/simultaneously. You also recieve an nice readout when charging the batteries that shows you the percentage of charge achieved in each of your batteries. The percentage increments by 5.

Dual Battery Charger plus the USB-C Power adapter of X-T4

This is perfect for me as I have two NP-W235 batteries that I have for my X-T4. So now I can charge them both simultaneously. I also label my batteries in order to ensure I get equal use out of them which I explained in this video. The charger can also be used for your GFX100S / GFX50S II.

The Dual Battery Charger is powered via a USB-C port which means that you can use other external power, from computer, power bank, car charger etc to charge your batteries when a power outlet is not available. Depending upon the charge and current available the batteries may charge quickly or charge over a longer period of time.

It is designed to support input of 5V @ 3Amps (15Watt), 9V @ 3Amps, 15V @ 2Amps or 20V @ 1.5 Amp. The X-T4 charger provides 5V @ 3Amps output for this charger.

Conclusion

Having this charger will eliminate the need to charge your batteries in the X-T4 body itself, therefore freeing you up to store and place it in a safer location where it would not be accidentally pulled off and fall to the ground. As well as charging multiple batteries at one time which would not be possible with standalone X-T4 body.

The post SAVE your X-T4 with BC-W235 appeared first on PhotoInsomnia.

Capture One has been developing a stronger footing amongst hobbyists and enthusiasts with continued release of new features in their updates. For example the latest release had the Magic Brush was absolutely magical (pun intended), check it out here. Capture One is always been popular with many professionals because its amazing capabilities and wider range of camera support.

Now its about to get even better!

The next release of Capture One version 22 will be including two new features that I’d love to have and use: HDR Merging and Panorama Stitching. This release is planned for December 2021 (mark this in your calendar), as shared in their Facebook page.

HDR Merging

HDR merge which will let you merge multiple exposures of same photo into a single HDR rich image, from right within the Capture One interface. There will be no more need for me to use any other software like Aurora HDR or Lightroom Classic CC which I currently rely on to create HDR images.

This means that my entire workflow will remain within Capture One, so I can’t wait to update to this version in December and be able to address my HDR needs within Capture One. Although there is no further details available at the moment other than that they will be releasing this in December, I wonder what kind of features this HDR merge will have considering other software available. Would they release a first version with these features and develop further features in subsequent release or will they go big bang with all the things we are used to using in other HDR software.

Time will tell.

Panorama Stitching

Panorama are again another great way to create large images or capture a scene in bigger details then simply using a wide angle lens. I have shared my technique of how I create panoramas in my previous posts here on the blog.

Being able to take multiple overlapping images and create a single panoramic image from them will again kill my need to jump into Photoshop or Lightroom. Does this mean that I can finally give up my Lightroom Subscription? Again this is quite an exciting news that will further expand the user base for Capture One.

I hope that I will be able to access some early beta releases of this version so I can test out these features before they become available to everyone and I can share my thoughts here on the blog and my YouTube channel.

However, in order to access these features you’d need to upgrade to Capture One 22 or be on their subscription plan which keeps you on the latest version all the time. I use their subscription option as this is ideal for me and I’m happy to pay a fee per month.

The post HDR Merging and Panorama Stitching in CAPTURE ONE appeared first on PhotoInsomnia.

Whenever I buy any camera or gear that uses batteries I always buy extra batteries for it, no matter how good the storage capacity or rating of it would be. And with all the batteries, I then label them in numbers.

Am I just being OCD or is there some method to my madness.

I want to share some of my tips that will help you with battery management.

Labelling Batteries

I label my batteries so that I can cycle through them all when I am using my camera. So if I remove battery #1 I will insert #2 and then swap it with #3 in that order and so on. This ensures that I am using my batteries equally and not overworking a particular battery not knowing I am.

My Simple Practice

All batteries have a set life and to get the most out of it you want to follow some simple practices:

Discharge them fully as much as possible, like when there is no juice left for it to turn on the camera

Charge them fully up to 100% before using them again as much as possible

Cycle through your batteries

Even my AA batteries are labelled in groups of four. I use these mostly in my speedlights so I cycle through 1 set at a time. This means all 4 sets are cycled through equally hence keeping them at their best performance.

Hope this battery management tips help you get the most out of your batteries. If you like this post, please consider sharing it with your friends.

The rated closest focusing distance of the X100V is 10cms which is incredibly close and this is why you are able to get some really maco shots. When I compared this with my X-T3 paired with XF 23mm F1.4 lens I was only able to get ~20cms close to the flowers or other subjects. Any closer and the camera would not be able to focus.

The X100V design is very compact and as the lens is tiny its able to focus so close. In order to take maco photos you don’t have to dig through any menus or any buttons, just get up close to your subject and focus to take the shot.

Conclusion

In my camparison video I demonstrate how good the X100V is at this job when compared with another X series camera (like the X-T3). Of course if you have a Macro Lens in your camera kit then you can get much closer than 10cms but this means having a separate lens.

So if you are considering buying the X100V, this is another great reason to consider this camera. Not only its compact, light and really good at low light but it also serves as a Secret Macro camera.

What’s that sound?

This is pretty scary if you don’t know what you are dealing with! First time I heard this “clanking” sound from your FUJIFILM lens..I was concerned that I had been scammed as I had just bought the XF50-140mm F2.8 lens from another person as a used lens.

Later when I bought the XF80mm F2.8 Macro brand new it also had this sound. So it turns out it is nothing to be scared or worried about.

Is it Normal?

The “clanking” sound is the Linear Motors (used for auto focus) of the lens that are not magnetised and therefore they move about inside the body of the lens. There is nothing wrong this is by design!! Check out the video above that demonstrates this.

And it won’t be wearing out anything in the lens as you carry it around with you. I mean if there was likely of wear and tear occuring because of this slight movement I’m sure the Japanese company could not release such a product.

When you power ON your camera you will notice that this sound goes away immedately, you hear from some lens a whizzing sound when it powers on but no more “clank” “clank” sound as you move the camera about.

This is quite important to know that this sound that is there in “some” of the FUJIFILM lens is NORMAL!! Especially if you are going to be buying a used/second hand lens from someone.

I have noticed this sound in these lens that I have used:

XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR

XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR

XF100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

I’m sure some of the other bigger lens also have this behaviour which use Linear Motors.

Conclusion

So in summary, if your lens is no longer making the “clank” sound once your camera is ON, then you are good to go. Hope you found this post useful and are okay with this odd sound that comes from some of the FUJIFILM lens. I which I knew this before buying my lens but better late than never.

The conversation was going for a bit but then they changed direction and put the collaboration on hold. Since then I didn’t hear from them and I had forgotten about Polarr Photo Editor.

However as I remember, back then it was a web based online editor. Fast forward to today, I was on my computer and downloading all the photos. I shoot RAW and JPEG together but I wanted to quickly edit a few JPEG files to upload to Instagram. I jumped on Apple’s App store to see if there was any image editor that can quick very basic and quick edit when I spotted Polarr Photo Editor listed under Editor’s Choice.

So I downloaded it and started to see what I could do. I realised quickly that it was far more powerful then what I was looking for and I could do a lot more than a basic edit.

Polarr can be used for editing RAW and JPEG files both. However I find it wonderfully easy to use for processing my JPEG files I don’t need to go into Lightroom or Capture One at all. I can do everything in Polarr Photo Editor.

The Interface

The interface of Polarr Photo Editor is beautifully laid out in a minimalistic fashion. It looks lovely and is very fluid, no matter how you resize the window you will find it very easy to use.

Filters [F] – section where you can browse Standard, Premium and Custom filters. These are preset editing settings that you can browse through and quickly apply to give your photo a complete new look.

Text & Shapes – tool lets you add Text overlay, Objects, Dividers and predefined layouts. This is quite unique feature and quite handy if you want to create Insta Stories, post for Twitter etc.

Retouch – designed for face detection it has some black magic built in this feature. It detects faces (multiple) and allows you edit/correct any distortion that may be introduced by your lens. You can even do some crazy facial edits. I mean it has features that you normally have to pay to buy in other software.

Crop [C] – a very easy to use crop tool with many of the popular ratios available in landscape and portrait mode. This is also where you can straighten your image if its not exactly straight.

Overlays – This is a PRO feature set that is available if you subscribe (USD 29/year). It allows you put layered based overlays on your photo. You can edit Leaks, Flares, Sky, Clouds, Weather, Backdrops, Gradients, Duo Tone, Dust Scratches and Custom overlays. You can build each of these overlays on top of each other, adjust opacity, and blend mode as well. Something that Lightroom today, still can’t do and probably Adobe would never introduce as that’s why they have Photoshop.

Adjustments [A] – this is where you will go to edit your photos exposure, temperature, curves, sharpness, HSL, Vignette and many more.

Selective Adjustments [L]* – This is a PRO feature set that is available if you subscribe (USD 29/year). Selective editing allows you to edit the photo by brushing over or applying the settings to particular region of the image and not the whole image. You can apply these adjustments using A.I. Detect (artificial intelligence), Colour, Brush, Radial, Gradient or Luminance. These are finer adjustment that if you are a newbie you don’t need to bother with. You will eventually grow into these as you get used to using Adjustments (6).

Editing History – makes it easy to go back to any image that you have edited. Basically this is unlimited Undo(s), you can jump back to a particular edit state and resume your edit from there.

Undo – undo the last edit, one step at a time. If you need to jump back a few steps, faster way to do this would be use Editing History (8).

To review in detail check out the comparison list of the Free vs Pro features of Polarr. You still get tons of awesomeness in the Free version.

Filters are an amazing place to start if you are new to editing. Simply flick through the predefined filters already created for you and you can turn your photos from snapshot to amazing shots.

There are Standard, Premium and My Filters.

The Standard filter has many options and looks that you can use, there is no teasing here that you see some nice filter but they are then only available in Premium category. What you see in Standard is what you can use, that simple.

Once you decide to go Premium, you can sign up to their subscription which is dirt cheap like USD 2.99 per month or USD 29 per year. But with this you can a lot more tools in Polarr, not just Premium Filters.

Of course no comparison here as Lightroom has none of these options.

Below is a photos quite vigourously edited..sorry whoever this is in the photo!! It’s just for illustration purpose.

Crop

Cropping your photos is one of the most…most common things you’d do before you share it on social media or sent to a client for review and approval. Polarr Photo Editor makes it quite easy to crop, rotate and flip your image.

AI Detect – this is next level amazing!! See how it detected the Natural Ground, Man-made Ground, Sky, Car and Hill in this image. These are automatic masks created by the software.

Color/Colour – colour mask allows your to select a specific colour in the image and apply different adjustment to it.

Brush/Radial/Gradient – these are common masks available in most selective adjustment tools that will let you define a mask area where the adjustment should be applied using Brush, Radial shape or Gradient

Luminance – this is a tricky one for most people. Think of this as a brightness range that will let you apply the selective adjustment to only those areas that fall within this selection of brightness.
