Day 366. Frankly, I didn’t believe I’d make it to the end. On the other hand, it doesn’t feel that important anymore now that it’s been three months since I took the last photo. At some point in December I realized that I hadn’t decided what my last photo would be. After agonizing about it for a while, I finally decided to make the last photo similar to the first one.

Now that Kipuna has left us, I’m glad I did. I’m also glad that I made it a point to take at least one photo of her every month so that there are a lot of photos to remember her by.

I thought that I might have something to say about the 366 project in general after I’m finished, but like I said, it doesn’t feel important anymore. One thing is sure, though – I’m not doing it again anytime soon.

That said, I still have plenty of photos to process and I’m pretty excited about them, especially the travel photos from Japan and Korea I haven’t posted yet. I’m also thinking of redesigning the web site when I have time, and I also have a couple of other new things in mind. I’m probably going to delete his this blog soon and migrate some of the better posts to the main site www.explodingfish.net.

I guess that’s all for now. I hope you have enjoyed this year of photos.

The final week of the project. I’m saving the final photo for a separate post, but here’s the last full week of 2012 in photos. I actually managed to delete some of the original raw files for these photos before processing them, but luckily I had the saved the jpeg versions from the camera on a separate hard drive.

1. A blackbird on Christmas eve.

2. Yellowhammers in my parents’ garden.

3. A bus stop at the center of Jyväskylä.

4. Lake Palokkajärvi. This was one of the deleted photos. The jpeg version didn’t look too good and the white balance was off, but I like the look OnOne’s Perfect B&W gave it.

5. Lahjaharju cemetery. I think this is my favorite from this week. This too was processed from a jpeg using Lightroom and OnOne’s Perfect Effects.

6. This jay landed on top of a fence right next to me and I managed to snap a couple of photos before it flew away.

7. A mobile phone snapshot of a tree. I did the black and white conversation with OnOne’s Perfect B&W and smoothened the background with FocalPoint. I’m really starting to like these plugins, especially after seeing how well they handled the jpeg files.

The second to last week of 2012.

1. A row boat at Lake Palokkajärvi.

2. A nice little chocolate gift from our neighbors.

3. One of our plants.

4. A long exposure test shot I took in the backyard. Not a total success, but I managed to squeeze surprisingly many stars out of the raw file.

5. A poinsettia to create a little Christmas mood.

6. We climbed on a small hill near our house on a cold December afternoon to see the sunset. This was the first photo I took there.

7. A view from the bus window somewhere near Joroinen. The photo is geo-tagged, if you want to see the exact location.

Week 50:

Most of these photos were taken in evenings or at night because I was too busy during the day.

1. I wanted to test how much the stars I can pull out of a photo taken in the city. Not too many, it would seem.

2.-3. Quick photos I took on my way home.

4. Kipuna the cat in a bag after we took her to the vet.

5. I took a quick walk in the neighborhood to find something to shoot. Took this and a couple of other photos.

6. Another shot of Kipuna. We had to find a way to prevent her from scratching an infected wound so we bought her a beautiful striped t-shirt (with a picture of a Moomin character in it).

7. The only photo this week that I had actually planned. The city lights color the sky yellowish when the clouds are low. I used a long exposure in a dark rook to capture the plant, which was positioned in front of a window.

Week 49. It certainly looks like December when half of the photos include Christmas decorations or buns. Two of the other images were taken at the same location on Puistokatu street. I was so busy during the most of December that I had to settle for snapshots on many days, but I actually put some effort into a couple of the photos this week.

The last few days of November.

1. I often see these pigeons when I walk to work but I’ve never tried to photograph them before. This was the best of the few photos I took.

2. I really didn’t want to post this one, but had to because I had nothing else. I don’t know what’s happening in this photo or why I took it.

3. A mallard on Tourujoki river.

4. A small stream running to Lake Palokkajärvi.

5. A long exposure experiment in a moving car. I think I like this one the best of these five because I it turned out so much better than I expected.

Here’s a photo that I took in 2011. I happened to find it on my hard drive a couple of days ago when looking for another photo and figured I might as well post it today. It’s not really a Valentine’s Day photo, but at least there’s chocolate and a heart in it, albeit a broken one.

Time to post a few photos after a couple of busy weeks. Week 46:

1. Helsinki on a rainy night. We went to see Wild Nothing and I took this shot when we were waiting for a night bus.

2. A man riding his bicycle into the morning sun.

3. Reflections on Lake Palokkajärvi. The day was so gloomy that I thought that concentrating on shapes might produce a more interesting image than a grey landscape.

4. This photo of a blue tit was just a test shot I took through the living room window.

5. I saw a few pine grosbeaks on a rowan one morning and was lucky to get a few photos. I don’t remember seeing ever them before so it was a nice experience.

6. Another quick visit to Helsinki. I tried to find something interesting to photograph the whole day but this long exposure I took on the way back was the most interesting.

7. A homemade gingerbread couple with their pink candy and some chocolate.

Weeks 45-46:

1. A cup of cappuccino in a new cafe that we visited for the first time.

2. A snapshot of a wooden flower at the office.

3. The only pumpking we managed to grow turned into an unhappy Halloween thingie.

4. A lonely street light.

5. Lake Palokkajärvi. I’ve found that on cloudy days when the light is not very interesting and there is little color, simple images with a few elements work the best.

6. A snowy morning at Lake Palokkajärvi.

7. Lemon yoghurt chocolate in a glass bowl.

8. A shot that didn’t turn out quite as I imagined. Lake Palokkajärvi.

9. Kipuna the cat washing herself. I took this just to test a new flash I bought. Now I regret I didn’t get one earlier because it has opened so many new possibilities for me.

10. Lake Palokkajärvi. Three exposures shot with a mobile phone and merged in HDR Efex Pro.

11. Waiting for a train at Tampere station. I like how this one turned out. I took the photo with a mobile phone and processed it in Lightroom and DxO FilmPack. Having just watched a documentary on how Steve McCurry used the last roll of Kodachrome 64 ever manufactured, I had no choice but to try it myself.

The last ten days of October. With the exception of the photo from day 304 I think it’s a fairly good batch. I forgot to take a “real” phoho on day 304, but my colleague kindly let me use a photo I took of him at the office on the condition that I cover his face.

1. The first photo is from Lake Palokkajärvi. We had a nice foggy morning so I took this shot before heading to work.

2. On this one I wanted to try to create a photo with dark atmosphere.

3. The second time it snowed this autumn. I’ve posted one photo from this location earlier, on day 27.

4. Lake Palokkajärvi on a crispy morning.

5. The center of Jyväskylä. The evening sun made the city glow.

6. Sunset at Lake Palokkajärvi.

7. A view towards Lake Jyväsjärvi from the top of a small hill close to our apartment.

8. A bohemian waxwing. I ran into a flock on my way to work and shot a few frames. This was one of the better ones.

9. Laughing man. Logo by Robin Redeker.

10. A window at the office. Not a brilliant photo as such, but I am a little proud of the way I created this from a noisy mobile phone shot.

Week 40.

1. An early evening at Lake Palokkajärvi. I’m not completely satisfied with what I did with this image so I might make another version later.

2. A hooded crow taking off. One of the few times during this project that I got the image I imagined when taking it.

3. I was shooting sunset at the lake, when I spotted this guy. I almost missed the actual sunset taking this photo, but the light was so great that I had to try to capture it.

4. An abstract shot I took while riding a bicycle.

5. Puistokatu street on a rainy day.

6. Lasagne. I didn’t have time for other photos this day.

The last three days in South Korea and a few from Finland.

This was one of the most special weeks of the year because I got to spend it in South Korea. It was my first time there so I took a lot of photos (which I haven’t even touched yet). Here’s a few that I liked.

1. Helsinki Airport.

2. First day in South Korea. A shuttle bus from Incheon International Airport to Seoul National University.

3. The main throne hall of the Gyeongbokgung palace in Seoul.

4. A river boat on Han river in Seoul just before sunset. I think the bridge on the right is Mapo bridge.

5. Sunset on Mount Gwanak. I still don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to climb there, but this sunset made it all worthwhile.

6. A toad statue in front of the Tukobi Building in the Gangnam district of Seoul. The text under the toad says that toads are a symbol of prosperity and happiness.

7. Haeundae beach in Busan.

Week 37. Again there are a couple of photos that I like and a few that I feel indifferent about. The first, second and the last are from Lake Palokkajärvi and the third and fourth from Puistokatu street. Totoro and mouse have to hide in the bookshelf because Kipuna would like to play with them, but she’s not allowed. I shot the glass of whiskey after trying out something else that failed.

The last image is an abandoned boat I found in the woods by the lake. I did a fair bit of post-processing on it. It’s an HDR image made of three exposures with some additional layers to give it a dreamy look. I didn’t know what I wanted this image to look like so I just tried some effects from OnOne’s Perfect Photo Suite 7.

First of all, Happy New Year!

I didn’t manage post all the photos for the 366 project before the end of the year, but managed to finish the project and will be posting the rest soon. Here’s the first set from September:

There’s another oriental poppy, this time backlit with my mobile phone’s flash. I think this is the best of the backlit flower photos I took this year. Apart from one image, these photos were taken with a compact camera because the sensor of my SLR was so dirty that cleaning the images afterwards would have taken too much time.

My favorite photos this week are the first and the last, and there are a couple of others that I like. The ones that I don’t like were all taken in a hurry sometime between 10 pm and midnight. I think you can tell which ones I mean.

The sixth image was taken the first time I tried to clean the sensor. That didn’t go too well and in the end the sensor was even dirtier than when I started.

For me the best photo this week is the first one from Tourujoki river. The third image is from the same position but facing the opposite direction. The last photo of the month is – once again – from Lake Palokkajärvi.

Week 34. I didn’t realize how many of my photos are of Lake Palokkajärvi until I saw this week’s photos on one page. The first is of a swan family that I photographed a few times this summer. It seems that all eight cygnets survived the summer. The small pumpkin is the result of our pollination experiment.

The photo of the boat was processed using OnOne’s Perfect Photo Suite 7. I downloaded a demo version and I was a bit sceptical about it, but it turned out to be an awesome tool.

A silhouette of a mallard, a pumpkin flower in our garden that we tried to pollinate, three sunsets on Lake Palokkajärvi, a willow warbler that hit our living room window and a train transporting tractors.

The second week of August.

1. A hooded crow on the neighbor’s backyard.

2. Lake Palokkajärvi at night. I’ve been interested in long exposure night photography for a while so I decided to try it out.

3. I was so busy that I actually forgot to take a photo this day and I had to post the only one I had – a photo I took when testing a camera app update.

4. Jyväskylä city church. I had the fisheye lens on the camera when I went to pick up a new flash card from a shop that is located near the church. There are a few things I’m not happy with this image,　such as halos and ghosting, but I don’t have time to fix them at the moment. This is an HDR image made from three exposures.

5. An HDR image of a bridge I pass almost every day.

6. Clovers on a summer night.

7. A mushroom with a nice texture.

The end of July. Lots of ducks and lakes on this one. The ducks are from Lake Palokkajärvi. The first lake photo is a view of Lutakko across Lake Jyväsjärvi. I originally shot three exposures for this one, but used only one because it worked better. Having said that, I don’t really like how this photo turned out.

The second lake photo is from Kuopio where we spent a day cycling. There’s a wonderful cycling route that goes from island to island. I would imagine that it’s really beautiful in the evening.

The sunset photo is from Lake Palokkajärvi. The park with the streak of light is close to Lake Jyväsjärvi. We spent an evening there with friends.

The photo of kids swimming was taken at Lake Tuomiojärvi, where we went swimming after playing football. The water-lily was captured at Lake Palokkajärvi.

The last photo is an oriental poppy growing in our small garden. There’s something about these flowers that I really like, so I ended up photographing them more often than I intended.

After a mysterious hiccup, the site is up again. I don’t know what happened, and I didn’t do anything to fix it, but now the problem has dissappeared. Now that we’re up and running again, here’s the third week of July.

This week’s photos were mostly taken with a compact camera because it was easier to carry around. The photos include my Peavey Classic and my face on a very tired evening. The sunset on the second photo was one of the most spectacular we saw this summer. The other photos are just snapshots taken in different locations in Jyväskylä – Lohikoski, Lake Palokkajärvi, Halssila and Lake Tuomiojärvi.

The second week of July. I quite like the photos I took this week, especially the butterfly. I was sure the focus would be off, but for once I actually succeeded.

The dog sat in front of a store waiting like they often do. This one seemed to be afraid of the camera at first, but it got used to me after a while.

I don’t take many abstract photos and when I do, it’s usually because I can’t find anything else to photograph. 6A is a reflection on a puddle late in the evening.

Not much to say about the buildings and the clouds. The gerbera was another HDR experiment with HDR Efex Pro 2. I think I used 5 exposures to make it. One exposure would probably have been enough, but I like the freedom multiple exposures give me.

We met the cat on our way home on a Sunday afternoon. It seemed lost and hungry so I hope it has found its way home and that it has a home to go to.

Hi again. We’ve now entered July (in the peculiar parallel universe of this blog) and I’ve got eight new photos for you.

I’d had the idea of photographing a washing machine for a while and it seemed like a good idea. The result was not quite as exciting as I expected.

I had also planned this full moon shot for a while, and luckily it turned out ok. Not as great as I envisioned, at least it’s closer to what I wanted from it. It’s a three exposure HDR photo with a fourth underexposed shot for the moon.

The next four photos are from a four day trip to Turku and Kaarina where we spent four days training. When we got back to Jyväskylä, we were welcomed by an amazing sunset. At the same night we headed to my hometown where we met two of my Japanese friends. They brought us a bottle of nice plum wine.

Finally, there’s another shot of Kipuna I took just after getting back home on Sunday.

It’s been a while since I’ve had time to post new photos. Here’s the last week of June. This week we have two backlit flowers, the first an oriental poppy that grows (or grew) in our garden and the other an unidentified red flower that someone had planted next to our letter box. Naturally you also have to have one at least photo of Kipuna the cat every month. This one was taken when she was rolling around on the living room sofa.
The second photo in the series shows Laajavuori ski-jumping tower. I didn’t have anything I thought would be worth posting so I ran this shot through HDR Efex Pro 2, which is now becoming one of my favorite editing tools. It gave a whole new life to this photo by bringing out the colors of the trees and the sky.

I took the snail photo after rescuing the snail from the road. The macro function in the PowerShot is definitely one of the best things you can do with it.

And finally, there’s a can of root beer. I bought the can from a supermarket because I’d never tasted root beer before. I honestly can’t understand why people like it. To me it tasted like Colgate toothpaste and drinking something that you’re not supposed to swallow doesn’t make sense to me. So this was probably the last can of root beer I’ll ever drink. The photo consists of five exposures merged in HDR Efex Pro. I opted for using tripod and bracketing instead of lighting the can or shooting it with a flash to avoid reflections.

Time to start posting again if I want to catch up before the end of the year.

The second week of June:

1. A window sticker on a door.

2. A black-headed gull over Lake Palokkajärvi.

3. A silhouette of a black-headed gull. I only took photos of gulls this day, but didn’t want to post a photo that was too similar to the one from day 164, so I made a silhouette version.

4. A whooper swan landing on water at Lake Palokkajärvi. It chased off another couple that had landed there a few minutes earlier.

5. A backlit tobacco flower. I tried taking flower photos by lighting them with the mobile phone flash because I often take these photos in the evening when there’s not enough natural light.

6. Dark clouds and rainbows over suburbia. Not a brilliant photo, but I’ve always liked the contrast between dark clouds and tones created by late afternoon sun.

7. Another rainy night. We’ve had a lot of them this summer.

The first full week of June.

1. Laajavuori skiing center and ski-jumping tower seen from Lohikoski at sunset. It’s a bit noisy because I hadn’t planned on shooting a landscape photo and had to shoot this hand-held using ISO 1600.

2. A hooded crow in flight.

3. A white wagtail on a beach.

4. Strawberries in our garden. The best strawberries I ate this summer.

5. A common gull over Lake Palokkajärvi.

6. A barbeque with friends. I first thought of posting a (sharp) photo of a steak, but they very boring, even compared to this shot.

7. A juvenile fieldfare on a branch. I think. It just sat there and let me take photos of itself.

3. Boats on the shore of Lake Palokkajärvi. I don’t like how the image turned out because I the horizon is tilted and I couldn’t straighten it without losing the entire image. I foolishly tried to make a hand-held HDR photo in low light, which turned out to be a disaster. I could, however, use two of the exposures so I merged them in Photoshop to get well exposed boats and sky in the same photo. It turned out ok, so I will probably try this again with a better photo.

HTC Desire.

This week marked my return to the daily grind after a nice week spent in Germany. There were some highlights such as seeing Cloud Nothings live and beginning the football season. I also had some time to photograph birds in the evenings. I didn’t mean this post to become a duckocalypse, but the best photos I took this week were of ducks.

1. Bayern München vs. Chelsea on TV.

2. A pigeon on the roof of one of our neighbours. They always have a few on their roof.

3. Dylan Baldi of Cloud Nothings. One of the best shows I’ve seen this year.

4-6. Ducks on lake Palokkajärvi.

7. Asphalt on a rainy evening in front of our house.

8. A brown hare on a meadow close to our house. We saw a couple of them feeding there almost every evening during the early summer.

9. A photo from our weekly football match.

HTC Desire + Nik’s HDR Efex 2.

It’s about time I get the next set of photos out of my hands. This is the week that I spent on holiday in Germany. It was a great week and also one of the best so far in terms of photography.

1. Nell’s Park in Trier at sunset. This is where the airport bus left us. The image consists of three exposures shot hand-held with HTC Desire and merged in Nik’s HDR Efex 2.

2. A swan on the bank of the Moselle river. This is the closest I’ve ever been to a swan and probably the closest I care to be.

3. Embden geese swimming in a pond at Nell’s Park. It was a nice place with lots of different kinds of birds to watch.

4. A windpark seen from a lookout spot at the Weisshauswald forest. We took a walk in the forest on the edge of the town and there were a couple of spots where you could see over the river and to the hills on the other side of the city.

5. Adolphe bridge in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is less than an hour from Trier by train so it would have been a waste not to visit there. The view down to the valley was breath-taking.

6. A vineyard on the bank of the Moselle river close to Saarburg, Germany. This photo is taken from a river boat goes to Saarburg a few times a week.

7. A beer drinking wasp. I was sipping beer and shooting birds on the balcony of our hotel when the wasp became interested in the contents of my glass. I’m glad I noticed it because I think it made a nice photo.

8. An airplane sticker on the window of the airport bus that took us to Frankfurt-Hahn airport.

The last five days before a week-long vacation. All of these are taken close to our house because I didn’t have much time.

1. Lake Palokkajärvi. The clouds looked mysterious that day.

2. Two common gulls standing on rocks. Lake Palokkajärvi.

3. 3. A small brook near our house.

4. A redwing singing on a tree. I’m not very good at recognizing birds, but I’m pretty sure this is a redwing. You can correct me if I’m wrong.

5. A black and white photo of an underpass on a gloomy day. I converted this to black and white because the dirt and dead grass on the color version looked even more depressing.

Canon PowerShot SX200 IS.

Before posting these photos, I was afraid what this week’s photos would look like. Some of them are not nearly as bad as I thought, but if I had a choice, I would not have posted some of the mobile phone photos. I think they are some of the worst I’ve taken, and I only took them because I didn’t want to miss a day. Many of these photos were taken inside the house because I didn’t go out much this week. On the other hand, I’m very happy with the HDR landscape from day 124.

So, let’s take see what we have this time…

1. A fly walking on our living room window.

2. One of our new lamps. I like the shadows it casts.

3. An HDR landscape. Shot hand-held, three exposures merged in Nik’s HDR Efex 2. I’ve tried other HDR software
before, but none have been as much fun to use as this one. It did a very good job on aligning this hand-held photo, and I can’t wait to try it on photos taken with a tripod.

4. A bookshelf being put together.

5. The finished bookshelf with a couple of books in it.

The last week of April wasn’t much easier than the previous couple of weeks because we were moving on the 28th and I still had a lot going on at work. Things turned out well in the end with a lot of help from friends, and luckily I had a chance to take the the last day of the month off.

The photos in order:

1. Rags tied to the railing of a bridge that crosses Tourujoki river.

2. A snail we saw in Kortepohja on our way to work.

3. Kipuna in her basket. One photo of Kipuna every month makes Jack a happy boy.

4. Cardboard boxes.

5. A self-portrait I took while walking to my old apartment on the day before moving.

6. The first sunset at our new neighborhood. An HDR photo taken and processed with HTC Desire.

7. A common goldeneye landing on water. One of the good things about moving was that now we live next to a lake and there are a lot of different kinds of birds and other creatures around.

8. An old Saab we saw in Aholaita. Can anyone tell me which model this is? 96?

Canon 40D + Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM.

This week made it a point to carry the 40D with so that I wouldn’t have to use my mobile phone as much as the previous week. Looking back at the photos now, the range of subjects is quite wide.
In the first photo, a pair of swans tried to land on the ice, but a couple that was already there rushed towards them and chased them away. This one went straight to my top 10 photos of 2012.

I took the second photo because I had forgotten to insert the memory card back into the camera after emptying it and had no photos at the end of the day despite carrying the camera with me all day.

The rest of the photos have no special stories related to them. They are just random shot from different locations in Jyväskylä. You can see the location data and other info by placing the mouse over an image and clicking one of the icons that appear.

I shot the orange while testing a friend’s new lens (Tamron 70-300, a nice lens for the price) at his house. The photo from Sunday is a long exposure shot of boiling eggs, in case you were wondering.

This was an awful week because of the massive workload, but on the other hand, there were highlights such as the Sunday afternoon walk, during which we saw a huge flock of cranes. Although I’ve been too busy to post images during the past two months, I’ve taken photos every day and start posting them from now on. I’m thinking of uploading a weeks worth of photos at a time to get them out of my hands as quickly as possible. I was walking around with my camera, hoping to find something to photograph, when I spotted this magpie. It sat in a tree for a while and then showed me this impressive trick of flying upside down. I have to admit that this photo is not complete unedited – I removed some branches from the left side of the frame because I thought that a clean white background would look better.

HDR Gerbera. Having liked the HDR photos I get with the mobile phone applications (I use HDR Camera+ and on occasions Pro HDR Camera), I tried to make an HDR image with a DSLR. This is the first HDR image I’ve ever made. I’ve never liked HDR photographs very much because most of them look over-processed to me (although there are exceptions to this). I think this one didn’t turn out that bad, but I’m not sure if I really used the possibilies of HDR either. I’m think I’ll try this again with a subject that requires the extra dynamic range.

This image is made of five exposures merged in Photoshop.

I see these jackdaws almost every day and I’d wanted to take a photo like this for a while. When I saw these two, I knew that I might have a chance and luckily I didn’t blow it. The snow was a nice extra which, in my opinion, made this one of the best shots I’ve taken during the 366 project. If you’ve followed this project, which one is your favorite?
