“Röyksopp release ‘Senior’ – the counterpart to last year’s critically acclaimed album ‘Junior’ – on the 13th September. More introspective and freeform than its poppier partner and fully instrumental, Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland recorded ‘Senior’ at the same time as ‘Junior’ and it finds Röyksopp in fine form.

Röyksopp explain: “The two albums (‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’) have a kinship, in that they represent Röyksopp’s two very different artistic expressions. ‘Junior’ – with emphasis on vocals, accessible melodies and harmonies, has the energy, the inquisitive temper and confident “hey-ho, let’s go!”-attitude of youth, whereas ‘Senior’ is the introverted, dwelling and sometimes graceful counterpart – brimfull with dark secrets and distorted memories, insisting “I’m old, I’ve got experince…”. Senior’ is furthermore an album about age, horses and being subdued – with devils breathing down your neck.”

Ottawa’s Politique released a new single called “Meet Me In The Dark” from the upcoming album “Secret Shock”.
I really enjoy this song, very catchy and dance.
Has that indie electro-dance rock.
There is that 1980s feel to it too.
Mallory’s vocals is strong as ever.
If I rate this single, it would be 8/10.

Meet Me After Dark by Politique
So far the band will be playing a show at Mavericks on November 6th with Loon Choir and Paramedics.

It was a busy packing show at Raw Sugar Cafe on September 4, 2010.
The weather was changing and it was chilly outside but inside Raw Sugar Cafe was already rock hot.
Despite a distraction by firetrucks, ambulance and the po-po on Somerset. Apparently there was a fire on a building.
Friends and families came out in support to see:

Belgrave was the first band to play.
They are from Montreal and their music is indie rock alternative.
I was really impress with their set.
Trevor Boucher who is the lead singer, sounded like The Smiths/Morrissey.
The band didn’t have a EP but they are recording at the moment with the help of Sam Robert’s producer

The Soiree was up to play.
It has been awhile for them to play a show in Ottawa.
Last time it was at Bluesfest where they opened up for Hole.
The band played some of their old material and played new material.
It was a great set and some people were dancing to some of their songs.

Overall it was a great night.

Happy Labour Day Weekend!
Its definitely the end of summer and people will be back in school or work.
This week’s number one track which is a way to kick off the end of summer is Tashtook’s track simply called End Of Summer.
Listen to it and have a feel for it.
Land Of Talk drops to #2 and this week the music video for Quarry Hymn is out.
Holding steady is Broken Social Scene’s All To All (remix) and this week the fourth remix has been out and its the Jojoflores and Rom remix.
While there are two new debuts one being Ruby Coast’s who this week released an EP (Which you get from Twitter or Facebook) from the upcoming album called Whatever This Is.
The other is DVAS (review of Society) who will be playing in Ottawa on September 18th at Zaphods.
So far the longest songs in the chart is still Arcade Fire.

DVAS – Society

Being the long Labour Day Weekend, decided to get out of my comfort zone of the indie music scene.
Went to Frenzy which is a monthly techno-dance party at Babylon Nightclub in Ottawa.
I finally got to see Jokers of the Scene, since there have been some buzz about them.
It was also a farewell party because the duo of DJ Booth (aka Linus Booth) and Chameleonic (aka Chris Macintrye) since both are moving to Toronto. [Thank you Guerilla Magazine for all the info]
There was great laser lights from Artengine/Ryan Stec.


the opener was Drastik.
His set was great and some times great to dance too.
The only songs I remember hearing was a remix of M.I.A.’s XXXO and Robyn’s Hang With Me.
After his set was done Iggy Smalls was the MC of the event.
Then the Jokers of the Scene and they played a great set.
I had fun time dancing to the music.

At that point I happened to see Adam Saikaley (Check out his video for Bike), Jordan Allen of Paramedics and Rolf Klausener and Pat Johnson of The Acorn was there.
They came out to support them and Jokers of the Scene did a remix of the Acorn’s track Bobcat Goldwraith which I am curious on how it sounds like.
I mostly hung and danced with them and their friends during that time.
There was a song which I was surprised to hear which was Jaydee’s Plastic Dream.
It was like a timewarp hearing that track.

I actually had a fun time dancing to techno-electronica dance music no doubt about that.
The crowd was great and it was not too chaotic.
I can see why Ottawa don’t want Jokers of the Scene to leave Ottawa.
Since they are good at what they are doing which getting people on the dancefloor.
As a music reviewing, I would have thought there would be something creative with Jokers of The Scene.
As I thought they were a band since maybe one of the member would be singing. They remind me of duo musicians like Thunderheist and Chromeo.
But a friend pointed me out, they are not a band, they are DJs that for the most part remix other tracks as well as produce their own.
Another friend pointed out to, told me that Jokers Of The Scene do have a indie rock following. Also the term I don’t like to use which is hipster following too.

Overall it was more fun than I expected.
Hope all is well for them in Toronto and beyond.

DVAS is a electronic dance group from Toronto/Montreal/Edmonton.
The name is short-form for Dietzche V. and the Abominable Snowman.
They will be in Ottawa at Zaphod Beeblebrox on September 18th $6 at the door.
So you better get your dancing shoes and see them live on a Saturday night.
Here is their music video “Society” so you will know what the band sounds like.

Society is their full-length album on Upper Class Recordings, who is home to Cadence Weapon & The Russian Futurists.
Listening to the eleven tracks on Society.
Its pure electronic dance fun and its a mix of Daft Punk, Justice and Chromeo all in one.
Also throwing in that 1980s synth dance pop with today’s electronica beats.
Back 2 Basix is the only track that takes is down a notch and makes it into a slow groovy R&B jam.
I am hoping their live shows is almost as good as the studio version.
The pulsing electronic beats and interesting catchy lyrics is what makes DVAS unique.
If you listen to Consenting Adults, there might be some innuendos.
You definitely need to get Society, its a fun disco electronica funky album!

If I rate this, it would be a 9/10

I really don’t know that much of the Ottawa underground garage music scene. Besides attending the Gaga Weekend Day show which is sort of close to what the Ottawa Garage scene is like.
I couldn’t help but be curious to what Steve Adamyk Band sounds like.
He plays in a wide sort of bands, one being the Sedatives who I saw play at Ottawa Bluesfest 2009. (This being a funny photo I took of him).
It is not just Steve in the band, he has Male Nurse (who is covered on this site for mostly the acoustic side of his music), Emmanuel Sayer & Dave Williams who plays in the Sedatives and other Ottawa bands helping him out.
Descerate is a 7″ digital EP and there are three tracks.
I was very surprised the title track is 55 seconds.
While Ivy Can’t Wait is 1:50 minutes and Unglued is 2:22 minutes.
I actually like this digital 7″.
I was worried it would be loud in your face but its very poppy alterna-punk.
Definitely was surprised with Desecrate being fun and catchy.
It sounds very reminiscent to The White Wires music since Ian is in Sedatives.

Matt & Kim just released a new single out called Cameras.
Its from their upcoming album “Sidewalks” which drops on November 2nd.
I really love the single Cameras.
Has that fun lightweight poppy-alterna feel to it with the xylophone-ish sound from the 1960s.
Still can’t believe I saw them back in 2008 when they did a show in Ottawa.
In 2009 during NXNE which was tame and not chaotic at the Ottawa show.

I give this single a 9/10.

Finally there is news about my favorite bands!
Its been awhile since I saw Ruby Coast at NXNE and hanging with them at Hotel2Tango recording the new album back in April.
Heard two new singles from Ruby Coast‘s upcoming full-length album “Whatever This Is” which will drop sometime in 2011.

The singles are:

• Whatever This Is
• Creep Me Out

Whatever This Is is a new song, and it sounds very mature than what we hear from them.
More guitaring sounds and a straightforward pop-rock track.
While Creep Me Out has been played live various times and finally has been properly recorded.
Creep Me Out is my favorite track since its fun and catchy.

J’envoie translation in English means “I Send”.
J’envoie is a band whose name popped up around 2008/2009 for various shows in the Ottawa music scene.
If I am correct the band is from Gatineau (formally Hull)?.

Never got a chance to see them live yet.
But lo and behold, I wasn’t aware that J’envoie are Olivier Fairfield, Phillipe Charbonneau, Pierre-Luc Clément & Patrick Sénécal.
Here comes the who is connected to who in this one. For those that don’t know, Olivier Fairfield and Phillipe Charbonneau are in the band Ferriswheel. While some members of Ferriswheel are in that band, this band and that band. Its endless!
Anyways, La Vitesse des Chat Sauvages was dropped on February 14, 2010.
Its a five track indie instrumental experimental post-rock EP.
Felt like listening to a film score for some horror film or a post-apocalyptic sci-fi future film.
Its mixed with dark chaotic drumming/guitar sound with dreamy keyboard sound.
Surprise with this EP, usually tracks would be like around the 2-3 minute mark.
But this one is around the 5 minute.
The tracks are very epic.
One of the interesting stuff I have encountered this year.
