Advantages Of Photographic Umbrellas & Soft Boxes

Photographers use soft box or an umbrella to manipulate the lighting that is used to focus on the subject or object being photographed. Both umbrellas and soft boxes decrease the harshness of direct lighting and can reduce the risk of unwanted shadows appearing in a photo. If you take a look at an image taken with an on-board flash, you'll understand the problems that occur when relying only on that type of light source.

A photographic umbrella is literally a small umbrella that is made with an inner lining that reflects light. The light from the strobe inside an umbrella will reflect off of the lining. In contrast, a soft box is literally a box that is either the shape of a square or a rectangle and contains your light source. A thin piece of material at the front of the soft box softens or diffuses the light it covers.

There are distinct differences between soft boxes and umbrellas. Typically, umbrellas are less expensive than soft boxes, which makes the umbrella a better choice for photographers who are just starting out and have a tight budget. Umbrellas are also a good way to learn to use your photographic equipment prior to adding new and more complicated equipment. Compared to a soft box, umbrellas are more portable and easier to transport for location shoots.

Using umbrellas is a good way to cast lighting on many different subjects with more flexibility as far as distance from the light source. Conversely, a soft box has light that is easier to focus closely within shorter distances. A soft box can be used to illuminate a subject with less light cast on the background. You have the ability to add components like filters and grids to soft boxes to make significant changes to the effect of the lighting. Umbrellas may not be quite as versatile, but they are adjustable in terms of using different reflective materials for different light effects. Both soft boxes and umbrella lights are beneficial tools for photographers.

Lighting plays a significant role in photography, and changes in light will change the overall effect of the photograph, as well as the mood it instills. It is the goal of an experienced photographer to create a seamless transition from outdoors to indoors by simulating outdoor lighting inside his studio. By combining the right light and appropriate studio backdrops, the photographer can imitate a rainy afternoon or a bright cloudless day.

Photographing Food

The key to emphasizing texture in food is to use smaller lights, keeping the lights close to the subject. One mistake often made by less experienced photographers is to overuse front lighting. This lighting will give you the least amount of texture possible. Of course, the mood you wish to create and the photography backdrop you choose to use will also determine the lighting you should use. Natural light is always preferable, so if you can place the food near a window during your shoot, it will greatly enhance your results.

If you are wondering how to take amazing photographs in your own home or small studio, the tips below are what you have been waiting for. It is possible to take beautiful portraits without a multi-source lighting set-up in the studio. These tips focus on using a single light that can be positioned to several angles.

#1 Light Position
Be willing to get creative. Take a few shots with the light shining down on your subject, up from the floor or over the model's head. These will all produce different shadows and therefore give you different looks and tones.
#2 Background

Photography Techniques : Portrait Light Setting With A Background

The background on a portrait can enhance the photographic value of the photograph as well as complement the subject. There are a variety of ways to enhance the look of the photographic background, including the use of lighting, backdrops, and shading.

A graduated backdrop can eliminate any unwanted shadows that can be created by strong studio lighting. To create a graduated backdrop you will need an off-camera strobe flash, a grid spot and a remote flash trigger. Also, use a simple photographic backdrop placed behind your subject in a color that will complement the subject’s outfit.

Set up for your portrait as you would normally, including rim, fill and key lights. When placed on the flash head of the camera, the grid spot, will force the light from the flash to be more direct. This will give you more control over the lighting.

Set the flash so it points toward the area of the photographic background where the shadow from the subject will be cast. To find where the shadow will be cast, position the key light in place and shoot sample flashes. To ensure you will get the desired background effect, take several sample photos at various exposures. You may have to experiment with lighting power, position and camera setting until you get the desired effect. Remember, the key to finding the right background and lighting effects is experience and experimentation.

A Simple One Light Portrait Technique Using White Seamless Background

By using a white seamless background and a soft box as your primary light source, you can deliver a crisp, flattering portrait. This technique works very well if you want to highlight specific details of your subject. For example, if you want to showcase a hat, hairstyle or chunky jewelry worn by your subject, this technique is great.

Getting Ready

You will need to gather a stool or chair, a white reflector board/card, large soft box and the appropriate white seamless background material to set up the shot.

Building Your Set

You can use any seamless white photographer backdrop. Set up your soft box facing the seamless background. By standing a white reflector board pretty close to the subject, you can control the facial shadows better. Put the stool close to the foam core, about two feet in front of the background is a good starting point. Your model is now positioned at the back of the main light source and in front of the white backdrop. This casts most of the shadows out of camera view and provides the highest amount of light possible.

This set up works by using soft, directional lighting and a crisp, clean white background. By using reflection to control the shadows, this technique gives you clean lines and flattering facial shadows without compromising the details you are trying to capture.

Photography is a rewarding art form that many find useful in their personal lives as well as their careers. One of the more tricky aspects is making the most out of the background. Sometimes you set up your own background, as in a studio shoot, and other times you will be working with the natural backgrounds of the outdoors. Lighter colors are among the most challenging, but when you know how to work with colors, light, and the shadows you can make lighter backgrounds work for you.

Contrast

Manipulating the level of contrast is one of the most basic things a photographer can do when shooting against light colored backdrops. Without contrast, the photographic effect can be a washed out look. If you are photographing a person, having them wear darker colors will help bring contrast. For light colored objects, props can be used to offset the lighter colors of the primary subject. Studio shoots are most friendly when it comes to playing with contrast as backgrounds can be changed simply by changing the background paper.

Camera Settings

When a photographer is unable to make changes to the environment or backdrops of his subject, it may still be possible to adjust the camera settings. Whenever you’re photographic setting has a lot of light colors the aperture should be set slightly higher than what the camera suggests. Getting the right level may be a challenge, but with a little trial and error you should be able to find the level of light that will best show off your subject as well as your backgrounds.

Selecting The Right Positioning

Sometimes getting the right level of lighting and contrast with a light background comes down to where the photographer and his camera is when the picture is taken. A few inches can make a big difference when the photographer is having trouble getting the settings where he wants them. The angle of the camera can also be adjusted to help make the most of natural shadows and other elements of the environment.

Another component the photographer can control is framing done through zooming. By zooming out the photographer gets more background and natural contrast. Holding the camera for a landscape look or a portrait look can also contribute to the contrast of the final picture.

Studio Lighting Equipment – What You Need To Know

The tools you have in your photography studio are only as good as you are familiar with them. For example, how well you know your equipment, and their uses, could be the difference between that sought after million dollar shot, or just a so-so picture. And if you're just taking average pictures, chances are you're not going to be in business very long. So whether you're a seasoned professional or an up-and-coming amateur photographer looking to make it in the business, a review of your lighting equipment from time to time is essential to keeping you on your game. Two types of lighting that we'll cover here are continuous lighting and studio flash. The two types of lighting are mirror opposites of each other.

Continuous Lighting

Continuous lighting is just as it sounds: continuous. Specifically, it is repetitive light that stays lit. This can include things like household light bulbs, tungsten lights and even fluorescent lights - anything that stays lit for an extended period of time to illuminate your subject and photographic background. There are several benefits to continuous light. For example, it is cheap to acquire, perfect for the beginning photographer who is cash strapped and on a limited budget. Also, since continuous lighting is always on, it's easier for the photographer to see where any shadowing will come into play in the photographic backdrop, making it easier to adjust the lighting, camera or angle to get the shot you want. However, despite its advantages, continuous lighting also comes with some disadvantages. For example, it's hot! It often emits more heat than light, so it isn't the most comfortable setting for you or your subjects to shoot in. Another con is that continuous light is usually not balanced according to daylight.

Flash Lighting

Flash lighting, also known as studio flash, is the opposite of continuous lighting. Unlike continuous lighting, which is always on, flash lighting only emits light when the picture is taken. This makes it more difficult to gauge shooting locations, shadowing and other features that you want to emphasize or downplay with your subject or photographic backdrop. In other words, with studio flash, you don't immediately know what, if any, lighting effect there will be. However, flash lighting has many advantages. For example, many studio flash units come equipped with a continuous lamp. This gives the photographer the best of both worlds, so to speak. Flash lighting also balances to daylight, unlike continuous lighting. And finally, flash units come equipped with large amounts of power, which can be easily controlled by the photographer. However, while the benefits of flash lighting seemingly outweigh the disadvantages, the photographer must take into account the cost of studio flash lighting. Such equipment is generally reserved for more experienced photographers, as the gear is typically much more expensive.

How to Take a Good Clean Picture of Your Tattoo

If you would like a clean picture of your tattoo, the process isn’t very difficult. However, there several mistakes that could occur resulting in poorly shot photographs. Follow these tips to ensure the tattoo’s workmanship is maintained as well as the integrity of the photograph.

Pin Up Girls Tattoo

Thoroughly clean and dry the tattoo. Don’t photograph fresh tattoos that are still covered in ointment or still may be bleeding; otherwise the quality of the photograph is jeopardized.

Invest in a good camera. Avoid using low-quality digital cameras, some camera phones and all webcams.

Request help. If you want a picture of your own tattoo, don’t attempt this alone. Ask for help in order to get the best shot. Otherwise, it's too clumsy.

Lighting is important. You’ll get the best lighting when photographing your tattoo outside. The natural light brings out the color, and you don’t have to use a flash. However, if an indoor shot is required, use a bright light source or photograph next to a window. Avoid flashes because they tend to cause glare.

Keep your distance. Photographing your tattoo too close will cause the image to blur. If a macro function is available on your camera or lens, then you can shoot up close. Under normal circumstances, though, standing 2-3 feet from the tattoo is recommended. Scan and enlarge the photo later for a close-up photograph.

Some additional tips:

Don’t move! If you move the camera ever so slightly, the image will be blurred. Be aware of your camera’s shutter speed, which tends to be slow on most digital cameras, before moving away from the shot.
Shoot several pictures. Instead of taking just one picture, snap off several. Experiment with angles, lighting and distances in order to get the best shots. Then, you’ll have numerous pictures to choose from.
Employ photo-editing. When you’ve chosen your photograph, use photo-editing software to enhance the photo by zooming in, cropping and sharpening the colors. It’s possible to over-edit the photograph, thus reducing it’s quality.
Older tattoos look muted when dry, so bring out their colors by applying lotion and rubbing it thoroughly.
Prevent glares by removing all lotion and excess ointment from the skin. However, if glares are still an issue, buff on a thin layer of body powder on to the skin.
Using a digital camera allows you to preview your photos and delete those less desirable immediately in comparison to using cameras with film. Digital cameras should be no less than 5 mega-pixels.
Avoid blurry images by not moving the camera or by not standing too close to the tattoo. Avoid grainy photos by investing in a good quality camera, and employing proper lighting.

10 Good (And Bad) Green Screen Examples

Due to the recent advancements in Green Screen technology, this technique has become more widely used in the photo, and video industries. Commonly found and very user friendly Green Screen software makes this just as easy for amateurs and professionals alike to successfully (and unsuccessfully) create a green screen composition.

Below are a few examples of green screen photos with our comments and *constructive* criticisms to help everyone improve, and evolve the process of green screen photography. Practice makes perfect!


This example shows good perspective, and foreground to background size ratio, however the subject appears to be "floating" on the final image. Applying a simple drop shadow under her feet will help "ground" the subject into the background more realistically.

This example also has an acceptable perspective, however you will notice the subject is outlined with a green cast of light, reflecting off the green screen. To correct this, simply move the subject further from the backdrop (at least 3-4 feet, or more!) and if possible, light the subject, and backdrop independently of each other.

There is no green cast left over in this photo, which is good, however you will notice there are portions of the subject's head, and hair missing. This can be corrected by using proper studio lighting (using a rim light will help separate the subject from the background), as well as more careful post-processing, and removal of the green screen. A common studio lighting configuration is the three-point lighting technique.

We suspect this photo was probably made more for fun, than for exhibiting awesome green screen skills, however, we will still share our comments. Ignoring the character's hair, and laser blast, we will focus on the composition, and green screen removal. You will notice a hard shadow under the character's arms. Since shadows cannot be cast on the sky, to make this scene more believable, removal of the shadow would be suggested. This can be done manually in Photoshop, or avoided all together by moving the subject away from the green screen, and lighting independently.

This photo looks like the editor used Photoshop (or other graphic software) and attempted to remove the background manually with either the eraser with a very soft edge, or selection tool and refine edge with far too much feathering on the selection. To correct issues like this, select a harder edge for your eraser, or brushes, and fine tune your refine edge settings to make the edges crisp, and believable. Photos like this, with problems in the dark hair, can also be corrected by "burning out" the green cast in the hair using Photoshop's "Burn" tool.

This photo is a good example of digital compostion of a green screen photo, on a digital background. The subject has no green cast, and the scene is pretty believable, and well composited. The more trained eye will notice however, that the background lighting source is to the left of the scene (notice the mountains highlights & shadows), yet the subject appears to have been lit from a light source on the right. this is a minor issue, but correcting it would improve this photo, and make it that much more believable.

This photo is very well done. The subject is properly lit, correctly extracted from the green screen, and placed on a background with similar color and lighting tones, making this a very believable composition.

Some minor color correction would make this photo great, however it is still very well done, and no evidence of the green screen is visible.

We found this to be pretty funny, so we just had to include it. Like above, we suspect it was made in fun, and not meant to be very convincing. With that said, the original editor could have slightly desaturated the photos, and color corrected or "colorized" the subject to better "blend" in with the rest of the statue, however we still got a good laugh out of this one, and that's why green screening is so fun :)
