PPS’s Clayton Spangler was asked to be one of  Three selected  speakers and lead a Photo Walk About for the Professional Photographers of West virginia’s Fall Convention to be held October 11th and 12th in Oak hill, West Virginia.
( Must be an active PPWV member and registered participant of the PPWV Fall Convention to participate )

 The Walk About will be a social gathering of photographers, meeting in a specified area of town or other location to walk around, shoot photographs, get to know one another, learn and have fun!
Attend the Artist’s Vision before dinner on Sunday afternoon, to learn more about the walk, where it will be, what we will do, and why we are doing it.

Then meet in the lobby of the Holiday Inn on Monday morning to travel together to the location, armed with your cameras. Casual dress and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Clayton will choose the starting point and basic route. Once the walk starts, you may move at your own pace, photographing things you find of interest—shooting and exploring along the way. At 11:00, the group will return to the hotel for wrap up, with instructions about what to do with the images.
Images from the Walkabout will be posted to PPWV’s website and facebook page for all to enjoy!

With contrast mask applied

  Ever have an image where you need to see some detail in the dark areas, while bringing down some of the highlights? Then contrast masking may work for you!
  Start by creating a duplicate layer of your image in Photoshop ( LAYERS palette, left click on your image and drag to the bottom right side-open folder Icon- to create a new layer )
  Invert ( Mac: CMD+I PC: Ctrl + I) and desaturate the copy to give a Black and White negative appearance.
  Go to the layers palette and under Blend Mode, change to Overlay .
  The last step is to go to FILTER > Blur> Guassian blur and raise the radius level ( start around 4,  you’ll be able to adjust this and see what works best for you)
  If you need to tone down the look, change the opacity of the copy layer via the opacity control in the layers aplette.
  The effect is to open up your shadows with more detail while bringing down the highlights.

PPS has been working on the printing and mounting of the display images for the Southern West Virginia Photovoice  Exhibit ( at the Clay Center, Charleston- April 17, 5-9 pm)

For the past seven months, 40 women from five communities in Southern West Virginia have been participating in a Photovoice project to “tell the story” of their communities. This project is an effort to increase civic engagement in rural communities and to give voice to residents’ concerns and ideas for change.

Open the image to be transformed
*Optional step – Desaturate layer *
Make a duplicate layer of original (Control/Command + J )
  Inverse layer ( Control/Command + I )
 Go to Layer > select Layer Style> Blend Options > Color Dodge> Click OK
* your image view will turn all white- it’s supposed to look that way*
 Go to Filter > Gaussian Blur > adjust to taste.

That’s all there is to it- a cool “sketch” effect made easy
