Glyn Dewis is one of those people who shines brightly. When you listen to this episode of photography 121 you will see what I mean. Ben Harvey

Earlier this month I travelled to the south coast of England to chat with Ben Harvey. I was very keen to spend time with Ben because I love his work and he is a regular listener to Photography 121.   His work is quite remarkable and, although he does not describe himself as a professional photographer, he produces well imagined, superlative and high quality digital photography.

Ben has discovered and consistently applies the photographic truth in the idea encapsulated in these words by Elliott Erwitt; “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them”.

Simon Longworth

Simon Longworth is one of a small number of professional photographers within the British Army. We had met a couple of weeks previously at the first Gulf Photoplus Pop-up event in London. Thankfully he accepted my invitation to be a featured guest on this episode of Photography 121. He like me really understands how photography can be a great learning journey.

Yesterday, we recorded our conversation in a place with quite a noisy background, which may or may not add to the atmosphere for you!

Sasha de Paz is our featured guest professional photographer. This episode is also a record of the very first time we have met each other.

We are both members of various photography groups on facebook and I started to notice Sasha’s work more and more. What Sasha does exceptionally well is, I consider to be, one of the most difficult forms of photography so it is no wonder that I eventually I invited her (several times) to be our featured guest. She said yes but asked me to hold off the recording until she relocated to London. So after months of patience on my part this is the result of our wait.

By the way, this episode is especially pertinent to any photographer listening who is a “victim” of gear acquisition syndrome!

Pavel Gonevski

Pavel Gonevski is a talented photographer who prefers to be seen as a storyteller. His written and photographic work has wide appeal. He is also much too modest about his talents!

His very talented wife and photographic partner, Veronika Velova, created the portrait of Pavel on this page.

Pavel and I first met on a photowalk in London and I immediately knew that he would be a great person to be a featured guest for this podcast. After several times of asking him to join us, he asked me to wait for a very special reason. This reason is made clear during our conversation.

Anna Bowkis is a Hong Kong based Photographer. One day last month, after both traveling from different parts of the UK we met up for lunch. This recording, complete with noisy neighbours on the next table, is the result of our travels (in more ways than one).   What Anna has to say is very interesting and is worth listening too right to the end of the recording. Neil van Niekerk

Neil van Niekerk welcomed me into his fabulous studio in Little Falls, New Jersey. We had, unintentionally, picked a particularly hot and humid day to record our chat. It happened while I was on a short holiday in New York with my lovely wife, Caroline.

The rising temperature and humidity meant that the studio air conditioning was on at full blast so inevitably there is background noise on this recording. Please ignore that and focus instead on what Neil has to say during our fascinating conversation.

Neil has a magical quality about his work as a photographer, educator, author and businessman. Michael RammelL

Michael Rammell is someone I felt that I knew before I had met him. Maybe it’s because of his online presence and some of the blogs that he has written; google “Why is wedding photography so expensive?” and check out the results). If you haven’t guessed by now Michel specialises in wedding photography.

When we actually met we got on like a house on fire and hopefully the energy in our conversation reflects this.

Photography has been life changing for Michael and he clearly understands the value of what he does AND gets emotional when he experiences the joy of other people’s weddings!

Neil Graham

Neil Graham loves photography, podcasts, photographers and nearly all things photographic. So when he agreed to be a guest for this episode I was very happy. Neil has yet to decide about his “professional” photography future but he certainly understands what he likes, what he has learned, wants to learn and apply his skills as a passionate amateur photographer who chooses to photograph fast moving things!

One of the consistencies that I absolutely love about Neil’s attitude is that he clearly demonstrates the purity of being a gifted amateur photographer. Amateur in the true sense, from the heart and he has a camera with him ”pretty much all of the time”.

Meeting Sean Gannon for the first time was a revelation. He has so much drive, passion and ambition which he clearly balances with humanity, humility and “creative doubt”. To say that he made his mind up one day and go for it, is an understatement. I could have spent all day with him.

This is the kick-off episode for the 2013 season of the Photography 121 podcast.

Imagine my delight when I asked Richard Cannon to be a special guest for the podcast (sometime this year, I silently hoped) and he said “Yes”.

I had only met Richard once before when, earlier this year he was the headline speaker at the London SMUG meeting. I was not only fascinated by what he had to say but also by his work as a portrait photographer. Annie Armitage

Annie Armitage’s photography gave me an insight into her personality and creativity well before we met in person. She has developed a great photographic style as she has grown as a professional photographer. I was therefore very pleased that she accepted my invitation to chat for an hour or so.

Chris Gravett

Chris Gravett has a nickname, or nom de photography, leflik17. He also has a passion and ambition for photography. During our conversation we discuss why he walked away from a high status, highly paid career to do what he loves, which is mainly but not exclusively Music Photography. He has also gone back to school to read for a degree in Photography (but not necessarily for the reasons that you might think). I found Chris’s story inspirational and I only wish that if you are one of those people who have decided to put your dreams on hold, that you reconsider that suffocating decision after listening to this episode.

Chris is also organising and taking part in a new photographic exhibition called Public Private at a new venue in East London (part of the world that he loves to photograph), the Espacio Gallery.

Jerry Webb is a very stylish photographer who is based in my old home town of Brighton.

I’ve known about and have admired Jerry’s photography for years yet I knew absolutely nothing about the man himself. This omission was corrected when he and I sat down in his living room to record this podcast (the background sound effects were provided by passing cars and motorbikes but, surprisingly, no seagulls).

Vic Pannett and I connected via google+  There was something about her personal style and mixture of photographs that made me curious about her history, motivation and plans as a photographer. At the age of fourteen, Emily Johnston decided that she was going to be a professional photographer. Since that time she has never looked back. Foz is a professional photographer who happened to volunteer for my “Pictures for an Exhibition” project. So when he opened the door to his home in the Sussex countryside he expected to see me with a camera or two . What I surprised him with was the opportunity to participate in this podcast. In less time that it takes to make a cup of coffee we sat down at his kitchen table and recorded episode 27.

Having never met Foz before I had no expectations. However, I was not surprised to find that I was absolutely fascinated by his story, experiences and attitude to his work and the clients that he serves.

This morning I travelled 55 miles or so to Brighton on the South Coast of England to record a chat with Dade Freeman.   Dade is a professional photographer with a history that obviously supports clients of his business, Krysalis Photography because he likes to under promise and over deliver.

Yesterday, I travelled for just about an hour to visit a total stranger. Her name is Gina Soden, a professional photographer with experience, skills and talents way beyond what her age may suggest. This conversation with Dean Barwell was recorded a little earlier this week. I had never heard of Dean until Tony Greco, a fellow photographer and a close friend of his made it very clear to me that I should check out his photography and then have a chat.

Stewart Weir

Stewart Weir is a professional photographer who has been active in many types of work including international commercial assignments, football documentary, wedding, portraits and even some catwalk photography. He started by capturing images on film, went digital and has returned to film for some very important reasons. Stewart’s words are very interesting and insightful but there are some background sound effects!

Nadine Burzler

Nadine is a young and determined wedding and portraiture photographer on a mission to connect with her clients.

Listening back to our conversation I felt really inspired by her words, passion and focus. After the recording stopped we chatted a bit more and it became even more clear to me that she is supposed to be a great photographer.

Our conversation was recorded in an open air environment so there are some uncontrollable noises in the background.

I strongly recommend that you listen to the complete conversation at least once because there is so much of interest to any passionate and committed photographer to consider, enjoy and, maybe learn from.

Steve Bishop

Steve Bishop is an excellent Portrait and Wedding Photographer with an interesting background. He loves photographing people and encouraging talent in others. He continuously invests in himself, through training with some of the best photographers in the business) and shares his knowledge with others. He is also in awe and is inspired by many different photographers.

It seems to me that this conversation with Steve gives a clear insight into his story telling skills, with or without a camera in his hand.

After the recording stopped, Steve shared a tip that he heard from a very successful photographer. I am paraphrasing here: “The amateur will show nearly all of his or her work. The professional will only show the best photographs”. Steve definitely believes in this idea and prefers quality over quantity.
