Nearly all of my life was spent in Canada and I have lost a lot of what it means to be Vietnamese as a result. I was tasked with the difficulty of capturing the lyrical and romantic qualities within the daily living of Vietnamese life. This image was one of the few that I believed defined this sense of family, community, identity and origins.

LUNG LIU came from a poor family that pushed him to strive, but he abandoned his degree in Microbiology for the uncertain and hungry life of an artist. The results have been exemplary, as he is now the author of many award-winning photoessays, mostly on the highly personal topic of people pushed out to the ultimate margins of society. Examples include a series of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, Canada's poorest postal code; the magic of the townships surrounding Mexico City; the environmental disaster and subsequent abandonment of the Salton Sea; the unique architecture of Finn Slough, a functioning Finnish fishing community in danger from the encroachment of urban development; a Gypsy Family living in a parking lot near the Venetian Harbour of Chania; the daily living of the residents by the railroad tracks running through the slums of Central Bangkok; and the Muay Thai boxers of Thailand. Among Lung's many awards are the Lucie Awards 2008 International Non-Professional People Photo-grapher of the Year, the International Roving Eye Overall Photoessay Contest Winner 2008, the PX3 sub-category 2007, B&W Magazine's Excellence Award for the Portfolio Contest 2008, the Lucie Awards Non-Professional Editorial Photographer of the Year 2007, First Place category winner in Photo-Life's Image International Photography Contest 2007, as well as winning Second Place for the Berenice Abbott Prize for an Emerging Photographer.

Price:$40.00

The rules dictate that we shall meet at the nearest bar to this spot. As the vast majority of Earth's surface is covered by water, the rule often leads us to remote islands. This photo was taken from a boat trip the Society made while meeting in Eastern Greenland in August 2008. We got a local fisherman to take us into a lagoon some tens of miles from the town of Tasiilaq. The Arctic Sea here is dead calm, with only tiny ripples on the surface. There are hardly any animals, no sounds, no human-built structures. The dominant color is blue: the sky and the icebergs being reflected by the near-still water.

VILLE MIETTINEN is a Finnish photographer born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1975. Since then he has lived in the United States in California and Illinois, and later on in Finland and Switzerland. His professional career revolves around building software and technology companies, mainly in the filed of computer graphics. This work has taken him all around the planet. After several years of traveling more than 200 days a year, Ville began photography as a way to document his life and travels--a way to keep a diary. In the end I managed to lose the guide, and was able to take some shots of my own. In this one I used the black silhouettes of people visiting the temple to create a frame within a frame.

It refers specifically to abandoned modern buildings. It also refers to a practice of urban exploration that has become incredibly popular in Japan, complete with countless websites and even tourist-style guidebooks. This project is a document in two senses. Firstly, it documents the derelict abandoned buildings of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, highlighting their transient status with the remnants of both official and illicit activity that has taken place since they closed their doors years ago. Secondly, it is also a far more personal document of my individual experience entering these buildings, exploring them and capturing what I saw on film. Either way the viewer looks at it, they are presented with a group of photos carefully executed to be experiential. For me, this piece is equal parts action and discussion. On the one hand, it is about exploration, ruins and the emotional effect of architecture. On the other, it is also about marginalized people and places and our coexisting attraction to and repulsion from them.

NICO OVED is a documentary photographer interested in constructed spaces and how they reflect the realities of the people who inhabit them. This enables the photographer to keep a narrow range of focus within the image, which creates a miniature model effect. Clifton Hill is in fact a real location in which millions of tourists visit every year at Niagara Falls. To some it's a location of romance, to others a location with lots of vibrant color, lights and sound.

PAUL FLYNN found his way into the arts at an early age. Growing up in the United Kingdom and being the son of prominent North East artist Richard Flynn. It seemed only natural to find ways to be creative. At first, he would be found following his father out into the Farmers Fields of Northumberland to draw the British landscapes. He then discovered his parent's camera and began to take pictures. In 1990 his family inherited a house in the East Coast of Canada and made the decision to move. Moving to this vast country at a young age was challenging, but the beauty of his new world could only inspire. Throughout his schooling he was very much involved in the arts, trying to perfect his craft. Paul now lives and works in Toronto, Canada where he's a Production Editor with CTV National News. With a photojournalistic eye, he
uses photography as his creative outlet and can be found wandering the various areas of the city he lives in, eagerly looking for his next shot. The view is often spectacular as you imagine that you are secluded on an island. With this image, I've tried to recreate that feeling of calm and solitude as no land is in sight. You will see the natural gradient of the water as it follows its journey from tapping against the rocks below to the horizon creating a fine line as the ocean meets the sky.

PAUL FLYNN found his way into the arts at an early age.
