You love to take pictures, and the good news is you can make money doing what you love. After all, you see pictures everywhere, right? You see them in magazines, on posters, on product packages and lots of other places. So you can make money with your camera, and there are many ways to do so. Here is an overview of a few of them:

1. Portrait Photography - The most common way of making money by taking pictures is to set up your own portrait studio. Individual people, families, friends, and even pets come into your studio either by appointment or as a drop in, and you take pictures of them. This can be an extremely lucrative way to make money with photography, but it does take time and effort to become established. It also takes money. If you want to set up a studio, you'll need to pay for the space, utilities for that space, and lots of studio extras such as photo backdrops, props, and speciality lighting. There is also the profitable field of wedding photography.

2. Stock Photography - Another great way to earn money with your camera is to take stock photos. Stock pictures you have taken can be marketed for you by professional stock photo agencies to a range of clients worldwide, or you can handle the entire marketing of stock images yourself through your own photo library business.

3. Magazine Photography - This is another commonly seen type of photography. Magazines need photographers and great pictures just as they need writers and great articles... and they're willing to pay for them. Some magazines pay small amounts for pictures while others pay £100 or more each.

4. News Photography - This one is a great option for someone who lives in a busy urban area, particularly if you love getting out and seeing what's going on. With this type of photography, you sell your pictures to newspapers, so the photos must be newsworthy in some way. You can take pictures of a fire for instance or other emergency situation, or of public officials and famous people.

5. Product Photography - This is also referred to as catalogue photography, because you're usually taking pictures of products and those are most often used for sales catalogues. Sometimes businesses will hire photographers to take product photos for packaging or other advertising too, such as the company brochure.

6. Fine Art Photography - If your work is more arty, sell your work in galleries and enter work into exhibitions. Set up your own website or sign up to one of the many online venues where you can sell your work as fine art prints.

7. Enter photography competitions and win prizes. It is also a great way to get your name out there, many professional photographers have competitions to thank for getting them started on the road to a successful career.

As you can see, there are a variety of ways to make money with your camera, but they're not usually as quick, simple or easy as they might first sound. In most cases you need to have talent and skills first, then you need to build up a reputation and or a photography portfolio.

Once you have these basic things, you'll also have a good idea of what types of photography you like best, and this will help you determine the best way for you to start earning income from your photos. To your success!

Copyright Mark Fenwick
