Dancer at 'Rock-a-Hula' bar, Yokohama, Japan
I was on assignment down in Yokohama the other night, for a Tokyo-based magazine. Just a little job, to photograph a bar and the dancers performing there. Great bar: Rock-a-Hula. Excellent atmosphere, great food, awesome mojitos.... I had three :-)

...after taking the photos, of course.

The Boy with the Baloon; Ginza, Tokyo
I shot this almost a month ago, in Ginza, whilst out with one of my students. She was just asking me how I deal with people whose shots I take in the street and whether I need permission. Seconds after I shot this, the father walked towards me and made eye-contact. I could see he was maybe a little concerned about me shooting the photo of his son. I swung the camera round, showed him the photo and instantly he said - in a very excited voice: "Wuaaaahh..... hoshi!!" [Wow, I want it!"]. We swapped contact details. One happy daddy.

The Lady on the Bicycle; Yokohama, Japan
I was waiting outside Donki for the missus. I'd been at a Hawaiian bar to do a shoot for Metropolis Magazine and Hiromi had been down that way as well, teaching some friend's kids. We met up at the bar for a drink and afterwards had a wander around Yokohama, to have a chat and clear our heads. I was outside Donki for some time, chatting to the locals and shooting pics in the street.

Ami-Shoko
After I collected my daughter from school yesterday, we had some lunch and I shot a few portraits of her. She was just backlit from the window in a way that just shouted 'summer'.

I was metering the light from her face and set the exposure from that, deliberately over-exposing the background and the edges of her hair. The high-key exposure really adds to the summer feeling, I think.

300-Series Shinkansen Dispatched to Nagoya: Tokyo Station, Japan
Another one shot during my Saturday visit to Tokyo Station's shinkansen [bullet-train] platforms with one of my photography students, Alexander.

This fella was very jolly. I shot one pic of him and he gave me the usual 'peace' sign, then I sort of gestured of it was OK to shoot some more and he was fine with that.

I showed him this shot afterwards. He was really pleased with it:

"Wuah, kakoi!!", he said [Wow, cool.]

Waving Out the Shinkansen: Tokyo Station
One of my students and I went to Tokyo Station this afternoon, partly in an attempt to have a lesson out of the direct sunshine, partly because I wanted Alex to shoot something that he would never normally shoot by himself.

This was my first shot at the station, split out as a close-up and the right-hand frame is as cropped in-camera.

Will be putting some of Alex's up with some of mine in a gallery on Japanorama asap.

Homeless man; Ameyokocho, Ueno, Tokyo
Went out shooting with Charlie and Jono last night. We walked around Ameyoko, Okachimachi and Ueno. This is cropped-down from the original, which had more of the legs of the schoolgirls in the foreground which, as Charlie rightly pointed out, detracted from the focus on the guy. One of those moments when a 200mm f/2 would have had the required reach to do it all in-camera.

A Fictional Character called "Debu Watanabe"; Tokyo, Japan
The characters for my illustrated 'noir' novel are forming. So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Debu Watanabe. The podgy, greasy, pathalogically irritating member of the gang. He laughs at his own jokes, can't run quick enough to catch you if you piss him off but dont let that fool you. He has five younger, faster brothers who do all his dirty work for him......

"No-one knew his first name. Rumour on the street was that he didn't have one. But you only got to call 'Debu' for two reasons; if you were his friend, or if you didn't fancy living any longer than it took for him to finish eating or finish his cigarette, one or the other of which you always saw him doing.

'People said the cigarettes kept his weight in check. Frankly, I didn't give a damn. I had the whole Watanabe Family on my tail and there were meaner, slimmer, faster ones to worry about than Debu.......'

Some days.....
....I just see patterns everywhere. Can't be helped.

Sunset as I was leaving the house last night. One of those days where the visual information outside my house was beginning to get to a point of such overload that I was seeing overlays...... Tokyo does that to me some days.

I was out with Ginger, one of my students, last Tuesday and we had a walk around Tsukiji. This little fella was hanging around the street and we had a few minutes with him, as he wasnt that shy.
