Even though they may have a 5 star rating, it probably just means that the facility looks nice, serves good food and has good doctors. However, just because a place looks nice or has the best doctors, lets face it, it is the Aides that take care of the patients basic needs. Sure, there are nurses too, but there are so few with so many patients. They seem to always be tied up with the newly admitted patients.

Most of the Aides don't even care that a patient needs help. They will get there in their own sweet time. It is so sad that the elderly are treated this way. I have a lot more to say about this subject, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Photos Galore and More: UCONN!

Photos Galore and More: UCONN!

UCONN!

Well, it's been decided, "UCONN"! For the past several months, I have been taking my mother to her doctor appointments, helping Ruth with Ed and Steve's webpage, visiting colleges with my son and who knows what else?

About a week ago, while driving to the mall, I saw a swan swimming around in an inlet and I just had to stop to take a picture of this gorgeous creature. My dad has a beautiful black and white picture of a swan that he took and developed himself, which is famous in our family.

The swan, which I have named "Swan Beauty", swam right up to me and when she came as close as she could, she then began beautifully dancing for me. Her movements were so graceful and smooth that the water did not even make the slightest shimmer. Swan Beauty began turning slowly while keeping an eye on me as if I was an audience. Perhaps I was... or perhaps I was dreaming that this was her reason. Her approach was just so elegant and so regal, how could anyone not become enchanted by her...

It Has Been Awhile - I've been Dancing!

Has it been since New Year's that I've written? Really, that long? Things have been crazy with my mom and the holidays. Not to mention, college applications, financial aide, which has not been fun. How about the weather?

What's next! Choreographing snippets for the school auction at Montrose. The theme is Jersey Boys (or is it Jersey Girls?), which is really exciting. It is bringing me back to the good old days when I was dancing with Paulette. The shows that she put on were incredible! The amount of work that went into putting on such a concert is beyond my imagination.

The Spingold Theater at Brandeis University will always give me fond memories. The front part of the stage was an elevator. One year we were devils and came up the rising stage as if we were rising from, well, you know. It gives me the creeps so say it. Another dance we did for our annual concert, we did on the Good Day Show, Channel 5 in Boston (picture shown).

Happy New Year 2009!

Happy New Year Rose 2009

Photo taken by Chris Tramontozzi

Wishing you all a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year 2009! Last year was tough and I hope that as a country, we have all learned something so we can begin to mend, heal and grow.. My karate teacher, John Fritz, would say to me, "May your best day of 2008 be your worst day of 2009". Not sure where he got it from but the first time I heard it, I had to stop and think about it. It should just get better and better! Let's think positive, and send good vibrations/intentions to one another. Of course, financial aid is something very important.

Although I am not in the mood this weekend, I needed to begin this process. First, we have to fill out the FAFSA form at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. While I was researching about paying for college on http://www.collegeboard.com/, somewhere it mentions not to pay anything to have your FAFSA form filled out. Well, when I searched for FAFSA, the second site mentions, "for a low fee...". Incredible, isn't it? I'll let you know what's next!

The Luckiest Mother!

Christmas is just about here. This is the second snow storm on the East coast we have had within the past few days. It seems like it will never end!

It is so cold that the kids don't even want to go out! There are so many people who still do not have their power back from last week's ice storm. The roads are treacherous as well. When I was coming home yesterday from visiting my mother in rehab, there were so many cars that were going just too fast. One driver was driving so close to my car. If I needed to brake, he would have hit me - even on a good day! For those of you who think that getting in an accident would not happen to you, please think again and also, think of the other person as well.

Broken Hip Update at Newton Wellesley Hospital

The hip surgery was successful thanks to Dr. Bulczynski of Newton Wellesley Orthopedic Associates. Everyone involved in my mother's care at Newton Wellesley Hospital have been wonderful. The doctor and nurses in the Emergency Room were caring and professional, which was quite different from an experience that I had there last Spring. I am so glad to see that things have improved there.

The next phase will be rehab. She will be taken to Lasell House in Newton until she gets stronger and able to take care of her own basic needs. I will keep you posted on this!

Picture above was my mother being wheeled off to surgery. That's why I haven't written in a few days. To top it all off, my mother fell yesterday and broke her left hip. This is not the first time either. Last January, she fell and broke her right hip. We are teasing her telling her that she just wanted a matching pair!

Do you believe that it happened when she was going to church? She was in such a hurry to get to Mass because she was a little late that she tripped over the carpet that was sticking out when she opened the large heavy door. Would it have happened had she not been in such a rush? Probably! Apparently, the Pastor of the Church found her, covered her with his coak, called an ambulance and then had someone get me. In the meantime, he gave her Communion, and blessed her with the Sacrament, Anointing of the Sick while waiting for help to come. Although she was in immense pain, she was in perfect peace. You could see it in her face...beautiful!

A rug sticking up can be so devastating to an elderly person especially if they have arthritis. So, if you ever see anything on the floor, please take the time to pick it up or push it out of the way. To the elderly, please slow down and listen to your kids when they say, "take your time". Also, it is okay to ask for some help if someone offers. Think of it this way, you are giving a person the opportunity to think about others!

Blogs, feeders, and Rent-A-Casino? Well, I don't but I'm learning. How am I supposed to know why Yahoo won't let Ed add his feed? Knowing him, he will figure it out. That is, if he wants to and if he has time. Ed's business called, Rent A Casino is keeping him pretty busy days.

What is Rent-A-Casino? It is a company that supplies and brings to you beautiful casino tables, professional dealers, decor and a DJ etc. It is a traveling professional Casino Party! Many companies large and small have casino parties all during the year for their company events. You could even hire them for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, or birthday party in your own home if you wish. With the help of Rent-A-Casino's professional team, you can customize your own casino party based on the number of people and size of the place you choose to have the event.

The above picture was taken by me at a corporate event that was held at Gillette Stadium. It was a gorgeous set up. I got a lot of awesome pictures of people playing and having a great time. It was very impressive!

Check them out at http://www.rent-a-casino-net/!

GayGrace Teas' Last Stop for The Season

On Sunday, December 7th, I went and visited GayGrace Teas' Mobile Tearoom at The Wayland Depot, Wayland, MA. This will be their last stop of the season. The "Tea Van" needs to rest for the winter! Don't worry, you will still be able to have tea when Gay has a tea party at the Holliston Historical Society. Saturday evening, my husband and I went to his company's party onboard the Seaport Elite Yacht in Boston, MA. What a fantastic party Raytheon put on, everyone had a such great time. I hightly recommend it. Getting dressed up was fun too! The Christmas lights around the harbor were lovely. Although there were a few waves here and there, it really was not bad and I did just fine.

I have to admit, I did not take my camera, which I am regretting now. The picture above was actually taken from the Seaport's website. However, there were a lot of "point and shoots", so I hope that I will get a chance to see some.

Thanks George!

More San Diego Pics

Experiencing Part of the College Admission Process

Well, they are off! I have just helped my son get his teacher recommendations and counselor forms off this morning. It was an intensive 3 day process to figure out what 7 different colleges want to receive, how they want to receive it and when they want to receive it. To be honest, I still don't think I can say that I understand what it was all about. But let me tell you, seeing them completed and organized by teacher with instructions attached, looked pretty good to me!

While they were on the coffee table looking so good and I was feeling so relieved. After a few hours of enjoying our accomplishment, my dear friend comes over and mentions something about a list of what each school prefers...! Gee whiz, it is listed on the Common Application website! Had I known!

So, for all of you going through the teacher recommendation and guidance counselor nightmare, follow the links to: The Common Application Forms page: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx. When you get there, scroll down to: Requirements Grid Only: PDF and double click on the PDF file. If you save it to your computer and then open it, it will be in an larger size so you can see it.

Some schools use the Common Application forms: Teacher Evaluation Only: PDF Word, Secondary School Report Only: PDF Word, Midyear Report Only: PDF Word.

I'm sure the school will let us know when we are to send the Final Report Only: PDF Word - at least I'm counting on it!

However, if the school has their own Counselor Recommendation form, I wasn't sure if you should send the Secondary School Report (SE) and the Midyear Report (MR) as well. What I decided to do was to follow this rule, "when in doubt, send it out". Looking at the grid, I think that was the correct action to take.

Most schools suggest giving a stamped addressed envelope to the teacher and counselor. However, somewhere I read that you do not need to send a stamped addressed envelope to the guidance counselor. You got it, I made one out anyway because "I was in doubt, so I sent it out"!

Oh, one other very important thing, be careful what you sign up for! I thought I was requesting information from the Admissions Office, but what I actually did was send a FastTrack Application instead. Oops!! My son got an email from a school confirming his application! They will let him know in a week! Oops Oops Oops! Thank goodness - he thought it was funny and so, we got a good laugh out of that one.

Whew! Just got an email confirmation from the guidance counselor and it looks like we did okay!

On to the next process...

San Diego by the Sea

As I mentioned in one of my last blogs, I would show you some more pictures from San Diego, CA during the MILCOM 2008 conference. Raytheon was the host and I worked with their photographers with taking pictures of the huge event.

After the event was over, we had a day to walk around before our "red eye" flight. This event is the largest military communications conference in the world. Raytheon Company was this year’s host so John was helping with organizing the golf event. I was asked to come as well and help the two photographers with the event pictures because they were expecting thousands of people. As is turned out, this was the largest of them all with approximately 7000 people.

Sunday, MILCOM had a golfing event planned at Torrey Pines Golf Course. John and I arrived two days before so that he could play golf their on Saturday. While he was playing, I ventured out by myself to take pictures of the town early, which you can see for yourself. Keep coming back to see more!

My 1st Photo Galore Blog

Since I am all about photography, I have to add an image to this page of a flower from a bush that I cannot identify. If anyone knows what this is, please let me know. It was taken in Ashland, MA in my neighborhood during the Summer of 2008. It is then that you will find me out and about taking pictures while totally oblivious to who is driving by! How can you not get caught up in such beauty.

I need a place to show my pictures, especially my flowers. Now that it is getting cold, the leaves are down, and the flowers are sleeping, I need to be able to look at them on a regular basis to cheer me up. Hopefully, there are others out there that will enjoy this as well. Feel free to check out my website at www.photosgaloreandmore.com to find out more about what I do.
