What better way to celebrate the month of love than by witnessing a love story accompanied by exotic music and dance? ICN 2018: Lakonna is an original musical inspired by a folktale from Tana Toraja, a highland region in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The musical is produced and performed by the Indonesian students at Nanyang Technological University to introduce and promote Indonesian culture in Singapore.

Lakonna is a tale of everlasting love laced with lies and deceit that follows two brothers, Arrang and Bayo. Arrang is a man who has it all: the firstborn of the head of the village who is set to succeed his father and a man in love with the soft-spoken Tanoana. Little does he know that his childhood friend, Malitta, has been in love with him and is determined to make Arrang hers. Arrang’s younger brother, Bayo, who has been living in the shadow of his older brother, is longing for their father’s approval and eyeing the village head position. As Malitta concocts a plan to get what she wants, Arrang eventually has to choose between the love of his life and his destiny to lead the village his father has left him. Beyond a simple love story, this musical serves as a reminder in today’s increasingly power-hungry world that there is a price to pay for chasing after power.

The Torajan culture is often described as mythical and mysterious. However, you would get to witness the different facets of the Torajan culture as dancers leap and turn to celebrate love and victories in wars and mourn the deaths of loved ones. This original choreography fuses Torajan traditional tribal dance with contemporary dance to create an entirely unique dance style.

This musical is more than just a story. With actors and dancers clothed in colourful traditional costumes and a stage decorated just like a Torajan village, this musical is set to be a 2-hour immersive cultural experience. For one night, you would be transported to the ancient village of Toraja.

TheatreWorks Curators Academy is thrilled to premiere FEVER ROOM, a projection-performance by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is the first South East Asian winner of the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, and one of the most original, exciting voices in contemporary art today.

Featuring Jenjira Pongees (Jen) and Banlop Lomnoi (ltt), who also appeared in his critically acclaimed Cemetery of Splendour, Apichatpong fuses his memories with the actors’ and fictionalises the narrative. Jen is a housewife lying in hospital waiting for an operation. Itt is a soldier, an inhabitant of a country deprived of light, and who is in a state of slumber. They cross paths in their dreams where people take refuge while their land is on a brink of collapse, echoing Apichatpong’s perspective on Thailand’s present state of military dictatorship.

FEVER ROOM presents a theatrical experience that takes us far beyond the frontiers of cinema, and plunges us deep into the filmmaker’s dream-like universe. It blurs the lines of reality and fantasy, obscurity and illumination, bringing audiences on a multi-sensory journey.

FEVER ROOM has just wowed audiences in Berlin and has been touring since 2014. It is set to amaze audiences in Singapore next. Don’t miss it!

The new TheatreWorks Curators Academy is founded by Artistic Director Ong Keng Sen. Curators Academy, with its first 30 participants from South East Asia, is unique for its international mission to develop curatorial skills in performance as well as interdisciplinary work focused on sustainability, sharing processes, synergy between contexts and curation in Asia. During the Curators Academy, there will also be complete performances presented for both participants and general public.

Start Date: 25th January 2018, Thursday
End Date: 28th January 2018, Sunday
Time: Thu: 10pm
Fri: 5pm, 7.30pm, 10pm
Sat: 2.30pm, 5pm, 7.30pm, 10pm
Sun: 12pm, 2.30pm, 5pm

View some of Dahim’s best known works in an open art exhibition on both Oct 22 and 23. Most Singaporeans might not be familiar with surrealism and its origins, but there is a small, thriving community of local artists and art lovers who have contributed to the scene here. Pioneering this movement in Singapore is Rosihan Dahim, who will collaborate with Perspectives Film Festival 2016 to host an intimate dialogue on the historical and cultural intricacies of surrealist art through a presentation and live demonstration. Anchored by the personal experiences of Dahim, the session aims to delve into the world of surrealism through one’s imagination and creativity. Dahim will also conduct an interactive workshop, inviting some members of the audience to have a close encounter with surrealism by trying their hand at creating their own works of art. An open art exhibition, held over two days, will also feature some of Dahim’s most known works.

Date: Oct 22, 2016
