After its last appearance here more than 20 years ago, a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the magic of the Philippine Madrigal Singers is possible for one night only at the Esplanade Concert Hall.

Founded in 1963, the Philippine Madrigal Singers or simply MADZ, is one of the world’s most accomplished a cappella choir. Having won all the top prizes in the most prestigious choral competitions in Europe, they are the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice (1997 and 2007). Honoured as the UNESCO’s Artists for Peace (2009) and conferred the Guidoneum Award (2010) for its artistic and choral contribution to the choral world, MADZ remains one of the most versatile and unique ensembles, performing a wide range of repertoire seated in a semi-circle, without a conductor. Under its current music director Mark Anthony Carpio, MADZ was featured again in the 9th World Symposium on Choral Music, held in Argentina last year.

The influence of MADZ has been far-reaching in the Asian choral scene and was a source of inspiration for conductors here such as the Young Artist Award winner Toh Ban Sheng and the late Loh Shook Fund.

Singapore Open Championship Rhythmic, Women’s & Men’s Artistic Gymnastics 2012

In its 9th year, the Singapore Open Gymnastics Championships offers spectacular gymnastics, and promises to be ever more interesting with around 350 gymnasts from 7 countries, including Singapore, all in contention for medals.

Singapore, the melting pot of cultures, will welcome strong competition from gymnasts from, New Zealand, Uzbekistan, Austria, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. With music, drama and excitement unfolding for spectators, the judges scores will determine who will make top of the podium – Whose ball will fly out of the floor area? Who will stick the vault solidly? Who will win the fight to stay on the 10cm wide beam?

The events will take place at the central location of Bishan Sports Hall, the gymnastics competition venue for the 1st Youth Olympic Games in 2010. Spectators are welcome throughout the event. The excitement commences on the 9th and 10th June with the spectacular appeal of grace, harmony and beauty of Rhythmic Gymnastics, followed by the thrills in the breath taking challenges involved in Artistic Gymnastics the weekend of the 16th and 17th June.
