The anime art and colouring is by ishthuytaokkay. The shading is superb, but my favourite part of this video is the glowing / floating heart effect at the end.

This anime drawing by zephyronx shows a good technique of adding colour and then returning to add the highlight and shading at the end. Adding all the light and dark areas at the same time should help you to get the shading right by keeping in mind what angle your light source is coming from.

This vector anime character was created in Photoshop by salemsail. It uses layers that are later hidden to create the correct shapes for the face and eyes and eyebrows. The advantage of using vector drawings is that they can be scaled upwards in size without loss of image quality unlike a pixel based raster image.

This photoshop video tutorial shows you how to create similar graphics to those used in the Apple ipod ads. First you have to desaturate the image you want to use and use the levels to sharpen the areas of colour. Create a new layer and fill it with you chosen background colour. Change the blend mode on this layer in the layers panel to hard light. You then need to duplicate the photograph layer and create a cut out of the person or object you want to have in the foreground and bring the cut out to the top of the layers panel. This tutorial then uses hue and saturation to colour the figure, however, you can also use a layer style with a colour overlay to create the same effect.

Open up the photo that you want to apply the lightning to and also a new document to create your lightning effect. After creating a black and white gradient, use the render filter > difference clouds to create a lightning bolt. You will then need to inverse the canvas to have the central section white with a black surround and use the level controls to sharpen the black and white areas. At this stage you can copy and paste the image onto the top of your photograph. You will then need to get rid of the black background around the lightning by choosing ’screen’ from the blend mode drop down box on the layers panel with the lightning layer selected. To finish off the effect scale the lightning to the required size and use the eraser tool to blend it in with the clouds.
